: To acquire the rules of Present Continuous tense using the new vocabulary

Lesson 41: “I am learning English”

In this class, you will learn some action verbs and how to use them to express what people are doing at the moment. This is called “Present Continuous Tense”. To achieve this, you need two essential words in a sentence. 1) a verb to be (am-is-are) and another verb with –ING ending. -ING ending gives the meaning of –ANDO – ENDO in Spanish.

(En esta clase, aprenderás algunos verbos de acción y como usarlos para expresar lo que la gente está haciendo en el momento. Este tiempo se llama “Presente Continuo”. Para lograr esto, necesitas dos palabras esenciales en una oración: 1) un verbo to be (am-is-are) y otro verbo que vaya con –ING al final. Verbos con –ING al final se traducen como –ANDO – ENDO en español).

Verbs with –ING ending are called “gerunds” So, to say what people are doing at the moment the structure will be:

(Verbos con terminación ING se llaman “gerundios”. Así que, para decir lo que las personas están haciendo en el momento la estructura será)

So, it is really simple. You look up the verb you need in the dictionary and add –ING. Of course, there are some exceptions, let’s see:

(Así que, es simple. Buscas el verbo que necesitas en el diccionario y le agregas ING al final. Por supuesto, hay algunas excepiones como en toda regla, veamos) :

-ING forms spelling rules (reglas para agregar el –ING)

1) verbs ending in –e drop it before –ing (verbos que terminan en –e, esta se saca y se escribe –ing)

Example:

write – writing (escribir – escribiendo)

live – living (vivir – viviendo)

2) Verbs with short vowels and one consonant double the consonant (verbos con vocales cortas y una consonante, esa consonante se duplica)

Example:

run - running (correr – corriendo)

swim - swimming (nadar – nadando)

3) Verbs ending in –l, double it (verbos que terminan en –l, la –l se duplica)

Example:

travel - travelling (viajar – viajando)

cancel - cancelling (cancelar – cancelando)

4) Verbs ending in –ie change it to –y (verbos que terminan en –ie, esta terminación se cambia a –y)

Example:

lie-lying (mentir – mintiendo)

die-dying (morir – muriendo)

WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW?

Look at the following action and describethe situations that are occurring now:

Example: (DRINK)

REMEMBER: RULES OF ING ENDING

In Present Continuous add ING at the end of an action verb.Example:

My father is working in a bank. (WORK)

If the verb ends in “e” ERASE it and add ING.Example:

My mother is dancing reggaeton. (DANCE)

If the verb ends in “ie” ERASE them and add Y + ING.Example:

Roberto is lying on the bed. (LIE)

For one-syllable verbs (short verbs), which end with consonant + vowel + consonant (CVC), we must double the last consonant and then add ING.

Example:Camila is swimming in a bank.

IMPORTANT: For words that end “w”, “x” and “y”, do not double the last consonant; just add ING.

Lesson N er 48: “Present Simple in 3rd Singular Person”

PRESENT TENSE IN THIRD SINGULAR PERSON

It’s important to remember that the Simple Present Tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular, true or normal.

We use the present tense:

1. For repeated or regular actions in the present time period:

Examples:

I take the train to the office. The train to Berlin leaves every hour. John sleeps eight hours every night during the week.

2. For facts:

Examples:

The President of the USA lives in The White House. A dog has four legs. We come from our houses.

Objective(s)

: To learn the use of auxiliars: DO and DOES.

Lesson N er 50: “Use of DO and DOES”

NEGATIVE SENTENCES IN THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

To make a negative sentence in English we normally use Don't or Doesn't with all verbs EXCEPT TO BE and MODAL VERBS (can, might, should etc.).

Affirmative: You speak French.

Negative: You don't speak French.

You will see that we add DON'T between the subject and the verb. We use don’t when the subjects are: I, you, we or they.

Affirmative: He speaks German.

Negative: He doesn't speak German.

When the subjects are: he, she or it, we add doesn't between the subject and the verb to make a negative sentence. Notice that the letter “S” at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in negative sentences. We will see why below.

NEGATIVE CONTRACTIONS

Don't = Do not

Doesn't = Does not

Example:

I don't like meat = I do not like meat.

Página | 56

There is no difference in meaning although we normally use contractions in spoken English.

Página | 57

SENTENCE STRUCTURE OF NEGATIVE SENTENCES

The following is the word order to construct a basic negative sentence in English in the Simple Present Tense using Don't or Doesn't.

Example:

QUESTIONS IN THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

To make a question in English we normally use DO or DOES. It has no translation in Spanish although it is essential to show we are making a question. It is normally used at the beginning of a question.

Affirmative: You speak English.

Question: Do you speak English?

You will see that we add DO at the beginning of the affirmative sentence to make a question. We use Do when the subjects are: I, you, we or they.

Affirmative: He speaks French.

Question: Does he speak French?

When the subject are: he, she or it, we add DOES at the beginning to turn the affirmative sentence into a question. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the question. We will see the reason below.

We DON'T use DO or DOES in questions that have the verb TO BE or MODAL VERBS (can, must, might, should etc.)

Do I need a pencil? Yes, you do. No, you don't.

Do you have a pet? Yes, we do. No, we don't.

Do they live in Playa Ancha Hill? Yes, they do. No, they don't.

Does he make his bed every day? Yes, he does. No, he doesn't.

Does she love romantic music? Yes, she does. No, she doesn't.

Does it have four wheels? Yes, it does. No, it doesn't.

Objetive(s)

: To tell the time

Lesson 53: “What time is it?”

In this lesson you will learn to tell the time in English. First, you need to know some important information.

(En esta clase aprenderás a decir la hora en inglés. Primero necesitas saber información importante)

La expresión utilizada en inglés para preguntar la hora es la siguiente:What time is it? o también What's the time? (menos usual) y su equivalente en español es ¿Qué hora es?

En Chile a veces utilizamos un reloj de 24 horas, es decir, podemos decir “a las 17:00 horas” “ a las 20:00 horas”. En inglés no es así (a menos que sea en los horarios oficiales internacionales, por ejemplo: los horarios de transportes). Generalmente se utiliza “a.m.” [ei em] para la mañana y “p.m” [pí em] para la tarde o podemos ser más específicos agregando después de decir la hora las siguientes frases:

“in the morning” (en la mañana)

“in the afternoon” (en la tarde tipo hora de almuerzo)

“in the evening” (al atardecer)

“at night” (en la noche)

Hay dos formas de decir la hora, la más fácil es leerla de izquierda a derecha, por ejemplo:

Lesson N er 66: “What things can’t you stand?”

Things that disturb you

Hello! I’m Grouchy Smurf. Everybody thinks that I hate everything, but it’s not true. I can’t stand people that think in me as a grumpy smurf. Also I cannot stand when someone puts people nicknames or makes fun of their physical appearance, family, economic situation, etc. People who do not know me think I'm irritable and moody, but basically I am tender and sympathetic, I just do not hide when I'm upset or when something is not right. Simply, I can not stand liars and cynical people.
