Little Help Makes A Big Difference

Un Poco de Ayuda Hace Una Gran Diferencia

It is not a secret that developing countries struggle with poverty, insecurity, corruption, lack of basic services, education, and a long

long etc.

No es un secreto que paises en vías de desarrollo batallan con pobreza,

inseguridad, corrupción, falta de servicios básicos, educación y un largo largo etc.

Just in Mexico a population as big as Canada’s (about 30 million) cannot afford food, education and health services; even though they spend all their income on it.

Solo en México una población tan grande como lo es la de Canadá

(alrededor de 30 millones) no puede financiar comida, escuela y servicios

de salud, con todo y que inviertan todo su ingreso.

Today,October 15th, 2008, in Mexico, 8 million children won’t be able to eat a piece of bread.

This situation and/or a lack of orientation at early ages could lead teenagers to fall into drugs, gangs,

drug traffic, and some other undesirable behaviors.

Esta situación y/o falta de orientación cuando jóvenes puede llevarlos a caer en drogas, pandillerismo,

tráfico de drogas y algunos otros comportamientos indeseables.

To give kids and young guys and girls the opportunity to get formal education is a way to break the circle of poverty.

Otherwise, they will probably have to quit school and start working in order to support their own families.

Darle a niños y a jóvenes la oportunidad de recibir educación formal es una manera de romper el círculo de pobreza. De

otro modo, ellos probablemente tendrán que dejar la escuela para empezar a trabajar y ayudar a sus propias familias.

In average, CA$30/month for a Junior High School student and $40/month for a High School one would be enough to

cover all basic expenses (tuition, books, notebooks, pencils, pens, even transportation).

En promedio, MX$ 300/mes para un estudiante de secundaria y MX$400 para uno de preparatoria (CBTis) sería suficiente para cubrir todos los gastos básicos (inscripción, libros, cuadernos, lápices, plumas, incluso transportación).

The following are two cases that were brought to our attention by some people close to us. Real

situations, real people, real problems.

Los siguientes dos casos me fueron contados por personas cercanas a nosotros. Situaciones reales,

gente real, problemas reales.

Case 1: The Leader

Caso 1: La Líder

Mahadevi Jurado (16) is a High School student (2nd year). One of the most brilliant minds in her class and leader

among them. Everybody was shocked when she announced she won’t come back the next day because she simply

couldn't afford transportation.

Mahadevi Jurado (16) es una alumna de CBTis (2o año). Ella es de las más brillantes de su generación y líder de entre ellos.

Todos se consternaron cuando anuncio que no regresaría al día siguiente porque sencillamente no tenía para los pasajes.

Fortunately, a compassionate person gave her some economic support for her to be able to finish the semester. But the situation has not changed so much since then. Her family struggles every day to make enough money to cover

the most basic expenses.

Afortunadamente una alma caritativa le dió algún apoyo económico para que ella pudiera terminar su semestre. Pero la

situación no ha cambiado mucho desde entonces. Su familia batalla cada día para conseguir el dinero para cubrir los gastos

básicos.

We had the chance to visit her and try to figure out what was going on in order to be able to help her. She lives with her Mom (her parents got separate years ago). They made

their income by selling cakes and pies.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de irla a visitar y tratar de comprender lo que estaba sucediendo para así poder ayudarla. Ella vive con

su mamá (sus papás se separaron hace años). Ellas ganan su dinero vendiendo pasteles y pays.

Mom (who didn’t want to appear on pictures) said most of their income goes to the monthly rent , groceries and

her medicines (due to her chronic desease).

Su mamá (quien prefirió no aparecer en fotos) dijo que su ingreso económico se va mas que nada en la renta,

despensa y sus medicinas (ya que padece de una enfermedad crónica).

Case 2: The Twins

Caso 2: Los Gemelos

Juan and Gabriel Orozco (16) are currently trying to start High School. Unfortunately due to the

economic situation they are facing, it is not likely to happen.

Juan y Gabriel Orozco (16) están actualmente tratando de entrar al CBTis. Desafortunadamente,

debido a la situación económica que atraviesan, no es muy probable que suceda.

Their Dad abandoned them some years ago, so they all (including their mom and sister) had to move to

their Grandparent’s.

Su papá los abandonó hace ya varios años, debido a ello, se tuvieron que mudar a casa de los abuelos.

Their mom lacks of education, she is currently unemployed. The little sister goes to Jr. High. Granpa

is retired while Grandma is a housewife.

La mamá de ellos no tiene educación, ella acutalmente está desempleada. La hermana

menor va a la secundaria. El abuelo es jubilado mientras que la abuela es ama de casa.

Granpa receives CA$150 a month. The twin’s jobs made an extra $100 a week. So that gives a total monthly family (6

members) income of approximately: CA$550)

El abuelo recibe de su pensión MX$1500 por mes. Los trabajos de los gemelos les dan un extra de MX$1000 por semana. Eso

da un total ingreso mensual familiar (6 miembros) de aproximadamente:

We got permission to access their workplace. They are general workers in a workshop. They help out on

cleaning and cutting the grass for the main part.

Nos dieron permiso de entrar a su lugar de trabajo. Ellos son ayudantes generales en un taller, en la

limpieza principalemente.

These are the first cases we received and wanted you guys to know about. Helping them is helping whole families, is

making them all very happy and giving them hope for the coming years.

Estos son los primeros casos que recibimos y quisimos que los conocieran. Ayudarlos es ayudar a familias enteras, es hacerlos muy felices y darles esperanza para los años

venideros.

Any economic help will be highly appreciated. The idea is to make yearly deals. Honestly, something as small as CA$5 a month for one year will be incredibly helpful.

Cualquier ayuda económica será muy apreciada. La idea es hacer acuerdos anuales. Honestamente, algo tan

pequeño como MX$50 por mes por un año sería increiblemente útil.

As part of the program, we will be giving counselling to these kids on a weekly basis (1 hour per person) in order

to make sure everything is going well.

Como parte del programa, estaremos dando asesoría semanal a estos muchachos (1 hora por becado) para

asegurarnos de que todo vaya bien.

In the future, we will be looking forward to give these young guys (and some others if possible) more support, maybe

sports gear, books, multimedia…so they can have a better integral development and be less likely to fall into bad

stuff….but that is another story…

En el futuro trataremos de darle a estos chicos (y a otros más si es posible) más apoyo, tal vez equipo deportivo, libros,

multimedia…para su mejor desarrollo integral y que sean menos propicios a caer en malos pasos…pero esa es otra historia…
