Cuatro por cuatro Este proyecto es elresultado de los tres últimos años detrabajo aunque muchas de las ideasexpresadas en él llevan fraguándosemuchos más. El título es una referenciaexplícita a los dieciséis cuadros que loconforman a partir de cuatro seriestemáticas. Y es también un guiño irónicoa este período de mi vida que hasupuesto, en cierto modo, una travesíadel desierto.

Desde que recuerdo he dibujado,diseñado e ilustrado, pero fue hace tresaños cuando decidí dedicarmeíntegramente a la pintura. Pinto porquequiero contar historias. Quizás la razónde no hacerlo antes fuera, como lesocurre a los escritores, que henecesitado acumular las experienciasvitales que alimenten las historias quequiero contar. Y quizás, porque quierocontar historias, trabajo en series sobreun mismo tema que me permiten dotarde ritmo narrativo a mis pinturas.

El realismo es un lenguaje en el que mesiento cómodo. La técnica es para míalgo que debe fluir con cierta naturalidad.Intento no obsesionarme con ello: mimanera de pintar es sólo unaherramienta más. Me preocupa quépinto, porque entiendo que mi trabajodebe ser inteligible y honesto; así quemis temas son ideas, desvelos yobsesiones sobre los que reflexionomucho y que, en cierto modo, sonuniversales. En mis cuadros hay muy pocaimprovisación, antes de empezar tengouna idea muy aproximada de lo quepretendo que sea el resultado final.

Four by four This project is the result ofthe last three years’ work althoughI have been hatching many of the ideasexpressed in it for a lot longer. The titleis an explicit reference to the sixteenpaintings that make up the collection,which is divided into four theme series.It is also an ironic reference to thisperiod in my life which has beensomething of a journey through thewilderness.

For as long as I can remember, I havedrawn, designed and illustrated. Threeyears ago, however, I decided to devotemyself entirely to painting. I paintbecause I want to tell stories. Perhapsthe reason I didn't embark on thisjourney before was –as happens to manywriters– I first needed to accumulate thelife experiences that would feed into thestories I wanted to tell. And perhapsit is because I want to tell storiesthat I work in series on a single theme,allowing me to endow my paintingswith a narrative rhythm.

Realism is a language I feel comfortablein. For me, the technique is somethingthat has to flow with a certain amountof naturalness. I try not to get obsessedwith it: the way I paint is just anothertool. I am concerned about what I paint,because I believe that my work has to beintelligible and honest. My themes,therefore, are ideas, concerns andobsessions I ponder a lot and which arein a way universal. There is very littleimprovisation in my pictures; beforeI start, I have a very clear idea of whatI want the final result to be like.

Es una reflexión sobre algunascuestiones recurrentes: el paso deltiempo, el envejecimiento, ladecadencia, la enfermedad y la muerte.He usado cuatro modelos para ello, perode algún modo son cuatro autorretratosa tamaño real: la representación decuatro estados vitales.

La angustia "unamuniana" sobre lainmortalidad del alma está muy presenteen esta serie que indaga en la relaciónde la parte espiritual de cada individuocon el cuerpo, el envoltorio físico ytemporal que la contiene. Lacomposición, la iluminación y laescenografía recurren, en cierta forma, alarte religioso para enfatizar el temor queme desasosiega de que nuestro espíritudesaparezca cuando nuestro cuerpo seextinga.

This is a reflection on some recurringquestions: the passage of time,aging, decay, disease and death.Although I have used four differentmodels, in a way, these arefour life-size self-portraits – a depictionof four stages in life.

The series contains much of the"Unamunian" angst on the immortalityof the soul. It examines the relationshipbetween each individual’s spiritual partand their body, the physical and temporalenvelope that contains it. Thecomposition, lighting and setting in someway make reference to religious art,emphasising my disturbing fear that ourspirit disappears when our body isextinguished.

Mi aproximación a lanaturaleza femenina a travésde las mujeres que ocupan mivida: mis hijas, mi sobrina, mimujer. Ellas pertenecen a esemundo indispensable einexplicable al que un hombrecomo yo asiste perplejo. Unmundo al que intentoasomarme mientras sueñan, ycuyo sueño es una metáforadel universo de códigosfemeninos que me resultancon frecuencia inabarcablespero que proporcionan ternuray sosiego a mi tensiónexistencial.

This is my examination offemale nature throughthe women in my life:my daughters, my niece,my wife. They belong to thatworld which as a man I findmystifying, but which isso indispensable andso inexplicable. I try to catcha glimpse of this worldas they dream, and theirsleep is a metaphor ofthat universe of female codesI often find impossibleto embrace but which providetenderness and calm formy existential tension.

Mis obsesiones sobre ladecadencia y elenvejecimiento encuentran unrefugio al principio de misrecuerdos. Ese tiempo en elque los caminos están porrecorrer, todos los sueños sonposibles y las certezas de lavida ni siquiera se sospechan.

My obsessions with decayand aging find some refuge inmy earliest memories. This isthe time when every path isyet to be travelled, everydream is possible and onedoes not even suspect thecertainties of life.

La serie “Construcción yDeconstrucción” es unaproyección en el paisajeurbano de mis inquietudesrecurrentes sobre el pasoinexorable del tiempo, ladecadencia y la trascendenciade nuestras acciones.

Me interesa la arquitecturamás allá del urbanismo, encuanto que sostiene elinterrogante sobre lo queperdura de nuestro espíritu ennuestras acciones. El edificioes una metáfora del propiocuerpo, una segunda piel, unenvoltorio que acoge granparte de los actos que realiza-mos en nuestra existencia yen el que también reside, encierto modo, nuestra alma.Surge, como nosotros, de unamasijo de material caótico einerte al que regresa trascumplir su ciclo vital.

In “Construction andDeconstruction”I project my recurringconcerns on the inexorablepassage of time, decayand the transcendence ofour actions onto the urbanlandscape.

I am interested inarchitecture beyond the mereaspect of urban planning,insofar as it sustains thequestion of how much of ourspirit lives on in our actions.The building is a metaphor ofthe body itself, a second skin,an envelope that plays hostto many of the acts weperform in our lives. To acertain extent, it is alsowhere our soul resides. Likeus, it emerges from a jumbleof chaotic and inert materialand returns to the same stateat the end of its life cycle.
