Reactions 1451 - 11 May 2013 Dabigatran etexilate Rash: case report A 59-year-old man with atrial fibrillation developed a rash while receiving dabigatran etexilate for anticoagulation. The man started dabigatran etexilate 150mg twice daily [route not stated] after a hospital admission for symptomatic heart failure during which he underwent cardioversion. Five days after commencing dabigatran etexilate, a diffuse, nonpruritic rash appeared on his trunk and lower extremities. The man stopped dabigatran etexilate of his own accord. He was hospitalised 6 days after the rash emerged with atrial flutter and rapid ventricular response. On admission, a maculopapular rash was noted only on his trunk. Dabigatran etexilate was believed to be associated with the rash and was not reinitiated. He was prescribed IV heparin for anticoagulation. The rash resolved 7 days after discontinuing dabigatran etexilate. Author comment: "A score of 5 was calculated on the Naranjo Adverse Drug Reaction Probability Scale, indicating a probable relationship between dabigatran etexilate and the rash". To K, et al.
