This player conforms to the NTSC color system. You cannot play discs recorded in other color systems such as PAL and SECAM.

Region code of DVDs you can playRegion code indications such as 4 are labeled on some DVDs to indicate which type of player can play the discs.

Unless “4” is included in the indications or ALL is labeled on the DVDs, you cannot play the discs on this player. If you try to play

these DVDs, the message “PLAYING THIS DISC PROHIBITED BY AREA LIMITS” will appear on the TV screen.

Depending on the DVD, no region code indication may be labeled even though playing the DVD is prohibited by the area limits.

Note on playback operations of DVDs and VIDEO CDsSome playback operations of DVDs and VIDEO CDs may be intentionally fixed by software producers. Since this player plays

DVDs and VIDEO CDs according to the disc contents the software producers designed, some playback features may not be

available. Also refer to the instructions supplied with the DVDs or VIDEO CDs.

You can

Enjoy video playback (movingpictures) as well as music.

Play interactive software using menuscreens displayed on the TV screen(PBC Playback), in addition to thevideo playback functions of Ver 1.1discs. Moreover, you can play high-resolution still pictures, if they areincluded on the disc.

Terms for discs

• TitleThe longest sections of a picture or a music piece on a DVD;a movie, etc. for a picture piece on a video software or analbum, etc. for a music piece on an audio software. Eachtitle is assigned a title number enabling you to locate thetitle you want.

• ChapterSections of a picture or a music piece that are smaller thantitles. A title is composed of several chapters. Each chapteris assigned a chapter number enabling you to locate thechapter you want. Depending on the disc, no chapter maybe recorded.

• TrackSections of a picture or a music piece on a VIDEO CD or aCD. Each track is assigned a track number enabling you tolocate the track you want.

• IndexA number that divides a track into some sections to easilylocate the point you want on a VIDEO CD or a CD.Depending on the disc, no index may be recorded.

• SceneOn a VIDEO CD with PBC functions, the menu screens,moving pictures and still pictures are divided into sectionscalled “scenes.” Each scene is assigned a scene numberenabling you to locate the scene you want.

Note on PBC (Playback Control) (VIDEO CDs)This player conforms to Ver. 1.1 and Ver. 2.0 of VIDEO CDstandards. You can enjoy two kinds of playback according tothe disc type.

Discs that the player cannot playThe player cannot play discs other than the ones listed in thetable on page 4 such as CD-ROMs including PHOTO CDs,data sections in CD-EXTRAs and DVD-ROMs.

Some of the DVD software include special encoding totrigger copy protection signal from the NTSC outputof this player. If you find noise on playback picture ofa certain DVD software, there is a possibility that it iscaused by the incompatibility between your displayand the copy protecton signals triggerred by suchencoding in the DVD software.

Hooking Up the SystemOverview

This section describes how to hook up the CD/DVDplayer to a TV (with audio/video input jacks) and/oran amplifier. You cannot connect this player to a TVwithout a video input connector. Be sure to turn offthe power of each component before making theconnections.

Inserting batteries into the remote

You can control the player using the supplied remote.Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries by matching the + and– on the batteries. When using the remote, point it atthe remote sensor g on the player.

z You can control Sony TVs with the g mark using thesupplied remoteSee page 42.

z When to replace batteriesWith normal use, the batteries should last for about sixmonths. When the remote no longer operates the player,replace all the batteries with new ones.

Notes• Do not leave the remote in an extremely hot or humid

place.• Do not drop any foreign object into the remote casing,

particularly when replacing the batteries.• Do not expose the remote sensor to direct sunlight or

lighting apparatuses. Doing so may cause a malfunction.• If you will not use the remote for an extended period of

time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage frombattery leakage and corrosion.

You will get a better picture.

Make settings on your TV.Turn on the TV and select the video input so that you can viewthe pictures from this player.

When using an amplifierTurn on the amplifier and select the appropriate position so thatyou can listen to the sound from this player.

Press POWER to turn on the player.

The indicator (red) above the POWER button changes to greenand the front panel display lights up.

Press ⁄ , and place the disc on the disc tray.

Press Æ .

The disc tray and front panel close, and the player startsplayback (Continuous Play). Adjust the volume on the TV orthe amplifier.

To open or close the front panelPress PANEL UP/DOWN on the player.

Using the Title MenuA DVD is divided into long sections of a picture or a music piececalled “titles.” When you play the DVD which contains several titles,you can select the title you want using the title menu.

Press TITLE.

The title menu appears on the TV screen. The contents of themenu varies from disc to disc.

Press ? /> /. // to select the title you want to play.

Depending on the disc, you can use the number buttons toselect the title.

Using the DVD menuSome DVDs allows you to select the disc contents using the menu.When you play these DVDs, you can select the language for the sub-titles, the language for the sound, etc., using the DVD menu.

The DVD menu appears on the TV screen. The contents of themenu vary from disc to disc.

Depending on the disc, you can use the number buttons toselect the item.

To change other items, repeat Step 2.

Resuming Playback from thePoint Where You Stopped aDisc (Resume Play)

The player stores the point where you stopped a disc if“RESUME” appears on the front panel display. In thiscase, you can resume playback from that point.As long as you do not remove the disc, Resume Play isavailable even if you turn the power off.

1 While playing a disc, press π to stop playback.“RESUME” appears in the front panel display and“WHEN PLAYING NEXT TIME, DISC RESTARTSFROM POINT YOU STOPPED.” appears on theTV screen.If “RESUME” does not appear, Resume Play is notavailable.

Notes on Discs

On handling discs• To keep the disc clean, handle the disc by its edge. Do not

touch the surface.• Do not stick paper or tape on the disc.

If there is glue (or a similar substance) on the disc, removethe glue completely before using the disc.

• Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or heat sourcessuch as hot air ducts, or leave it in a car parked in directsunlight as there can be considerable rise in temperatureinside the car.

• After playing, store the disc in its case.

On cleaning• Before playing, clean the disc with a cleaning cloth. Wipe

the disc from the center out.

• Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commerciallyavailable cleaners or anti-static spray intended for vinylLPs.

lit, check that the AC power cord is connectedsecurely.

There is no picture./ Check that the player is connected securely./ The video connecting cord has broken down.

Bit rateValue indicating the amount of video data compressedin a DVD per second. The unit is Mbps (Mega bit persecond). 1 Mbps indicates that the data per second is1,000,000 bits. The higher the bit rate is, the larger theamount of data. However, this does not always meanthat you can get higher quality pictures.

ChapterSections of a picture or a music piece on a DVD that aresmaller than titles. A title is composed of severalchapters. Each chapter is assigned a chapter numberenabling you to locate the chapter you want.

Dolby Digital (AC-3)Digital audio compression technology that the DolbyLaboratories Corporation developed. This technologyconforms to 5.1-channel surround. When connecting acomponent with a built-in Dolby Digital decoder, youcan enjoy more real audio presence.

DVDA disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving pictureseven though its diameter is the same as a CD.The data capacity of a single-layer and single-sidedDVD, at 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), is 7 times that of a CD.Furthermore, the data capacity of a dual-layer andsingle-sided DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and double-sided DVD 9.4 GB, and a dual-layer and double-sidedDVD 17 GB.The picture data uses the MPEG 2 format, one of theworldwide standards of digital compressiontechnology. The picture data is compressed to about1/40 of its original size. Este reproductor cumple con el sistema de color NTSC. No es posible reproducir discos grabados en otros sistemas de color, comoPAL y SECAM.

Código de región de discos DVD que pueden reproducirseDeterminados discos DVD presentan las indicaciones de código de región, como 4 , que indican el tipo de reproductorcapacitado para reproducir los discos.A menos que “4” se incluya en las indicaciones o que los discos DVD presenten la marca ALL , no será posible reproducir los discosen este reproductor. Términos aplicables a los discos

• TítuloLas secciones más amplias de una imagen o de una piezamusical de un disco DVD; una película, etc., de una imagende software de vídeo o un álbum, etc. y de una piezamusical de software de audio. A cada título se le asigna unnúmero que permite localizar el deseado.

• CapítuloSecciones de una imagen o de una pieza musical menoresque los títulos. Un título se compone de varios capítulos y acada uno de éstos se le asigna un número que permitelocalizar el deseado. Es posible que determinados discos nodispongan de capítulos grabados.

• PistaSecciones de una imagen o de una pieza musical de unVIDEO CD o de un CD. A cada pista se le asigna unnúmero que permite localizar la deseada.

• IndiceNúmero que divide una pista en varias secciones paralocalizar con facilidad el punto deseado de un VIDEO CD ode un CD. Es posible que no haya índices registrados,dependiendo del disco.

• EscenaEn discos VIDEO CD con funciones PBC, las pantallas demenú, las imágenes en movimiento y las fijas se dividen ensecciones denominadas “escenas”. A cada escena se leasigna un número que permite localizar la deseada.

Nota sobre la función PBC (Control de reproducción)(discos VIDEO CD)Este reproductor cumple con las versiones 1.1 y 2.0 de lasnormas sobre discos VIDEO CD. Es posible realizar dos tiposde reproducción en función del tipo de disco.

Determinados software DVD incluyen codificación especialpara activar la señal de protección contra copias de la salidaNTSC de este reproductor. Si percibe ruido en la imagen dereproducción de algún software DVD, existe la posibilidadde que esté causado por incompatibilidad entre la pantallay las señales de protección contra copias activadas pordicha codificación en el software DVD.

Descripción general

En esta sección se describe cómo conectar elreproductor de CD/DVD a un TV (con tomas deentrada de audio/vídeo) y/o un amplificador. Inserción de las pilas en el mando adistancia

Es posible controlar el reproductor con el mando adistancia suministrado. Inserte dos pilas R6 (tamañoAA) haciendo coincidir las polaridades + y – de lasmismas. Cuando utilice el mando a distancia, oriéntelohacia el sensor remoto g del reproductor.

z Es posible controlar televisores Sony con la marca gmediante el mando a distancia suministradoConsulte la página 42.

z Cuándo sustituir las pilasCon un uso normal, la duración de las pilas es de seismeses aproximadamente. Cuando no sea posiblecontrolar el reproductor con el mando a distancia,sustituya todas las pilas por otras nuevas.

Empleo del menú de títulosLos discos DVD se dividen en largas secciones de una imagen o deuna pieza musical denominadas “títulos”. Al reproducir un discoDVD que contenga varios títulos, es posible seleccionar el que deseemediante el menú de títulos.

El reproductor almacena el punto donde detuvo eldisco si “RESUME” aparece en el visor del panelfrontal. En este caso, podrá reanudar la reproduccióndesde ese punto.Siempre que no extraiga el disco, podrá disponer de lareanudación de reproducción aunque desactive laalimentación.

1 Mientras reproduce un disco, pulse π para detenerla reproducción.El visor del panel frontal muestra “RESUME” y elmensaje “WHEN PLAYING NEXT TIME, DISCRESTARTS FROM POINT YOU STOPPED”aparece en la pantalla del TV.Si “RESUME” no aparece, no será posible utilizarla reanudación de reproducción.

2 Pulse Æ .El reproductor inicia la reproducción desde elpunto donde detuvo el disco en el paso 1.

En este caso, se perderá el efecto estéreo.

Notas sobre los discos

Manejo de los discos• Para mantener el disco limpio, cójalo por los bordes. No

toque la superficie.• No adhiera papel ni cinta adhesiva en el disco.

Si hay pegamento (o sustancia similar) en el disco, límpielopor completo antes de utilizarlo.

• No exponga el disco a la luz solar directa ni a fuentestérmicas, como conductos de aire caliente, ni lo deje en unautomóvil aparcado bajo la luz solar directa, ya que puedeproducirse un considerable aumento de temperatura en elinterior del mismo.

• Después de la reproducción, guarde el disco en su caja.

Limpieza• Antes de la reproducción, limpie el disco con un paño de

limpieza desde el centro hacia los bordes.

• No utilice disolventes, como bencina, diluyentes, niproductos de limpieza o aerosoles antiestáticos, disponiblesen las tiendas del ramo, destinados a discos de vinilo.

AVISO IMPORTANTEPrecaución: El reproductor DVD incluido es capaz demantener imágenes fijas de vídeo o de menú en lapantalla del televisor indefinidamente. Si muestra dichasimágenes en el TV durante mucho tiempo, puedenproducirse daños permanentes en la pantalla deltelevisor. Los televisores de proyección son muysusceptibles a estos daños.

Fuentes de alimentación• El reproductor no estará desconectado de la fuente de

alimentación de CA (toma de corriente) mientras estéconectado a la toma mural, aunque apague el propioreproductor.

• Si no va a utilizar el reproductor durante mucho tiempo,asegúrese de desconectarlo de la toma mural. Paradesconectar el cable de alimentación de CA (cable decorriente), tire del enchufe, nunca del propio cable.

• Si es necesario sustituir el cable de alimentación de CA(cable de corriente), acuda únicamente a un centro deservicio técnico especializado.

Ubicación• Coloque el reproductor en un lugar donde reciba una

ventilación adecuada con el fin de evitar el recalentamientointerno del mismo.

• No coloque el reproductor sobre una superficie blanda,como una manta, que pueda bloquear los orificios deventilación de la parte inferior.

• No coloque el reproductor en un lugar cercano a fuentestérmicas, ni expuesto a la luz solar directa, polvo excesivo ogolpes mecánicos.

Funcionamiento• Si traslada el reproductor de un lugar frío a otro cálido

directamente, o si lo instala en una sala muy húmeda, esposible que se condense humedad en las lentes del interiordel reproductor. Si esto ocurre, es posible que no funcionecorrectamente. En este caso, extraiga el disco y deje elreproductor encendido durante una hora aproximadamentehasta que la humedad se evapore.

Ajuste del volumen• No aumente el volumen mientras escuche una parte con

entradas de nivel muy bajas o sin señales de audio. Si lohace, puede dañar los altavoces al reproducirse una partede nivel de pico.

Limpieza• Limpie el exterior, el panel y los controles con un paño

suave ligeramente humedecido con una solución detergentepoco concentrada. No utilice ningún tipo de estropajoabrasivo, detergente en polvo ni disolventes, como alcoholo bencina.

La alimentación no se activa./ Si el indicador situado sobre el botón POWER

no se ilumina, compruebe que el cable dealimentación de CA esté firmemente conectado.

Ausencia de imagen./ Compruebe que ha conectado firmemente el

reproductor./ El cable de conexión de vídeo se ha roto.

Sustitúyalo por otro nuevo./ Compruebe que conecta el reproductor al

conector de entrada de vídeo del TV (página 6)./ Compruebe que ha encendido el TV./ Asegúrese de que ha seleccionado la entrada de

vídeo en el TV para poder ver las imágenes delreproductor.

Ausencia de sonido./ Compruebe que ha conectado firmemente el

/ El reproductor se encuentra en el modo depausa o en el de reproducción a cámara lenta.Pulse Æ para volver al modo de reproducciónnormal.

/ Se realiza el avance rápido (FF1 o FF2) o elretroceso rápido (FR1 o FR2). Pulse Æ pararecuperar el modo de reproducción normal.

/ Si conecta el reproductor a un amplificador conconector digital y reproduce un DVD, ajuste“DVD DIGITAL OUT” de “INITIAL SETUP” en“PCM” en el menú. Si reproduce un VIDEO CD,ajuste “VIDEO CD DIGITAL OUT” de“INITIAL SETUP” en “ON” en el menú.

/ Seleccione el ajuste apropiado de “DOWNMIX”de “INITIAL SETUP” para el amplificador.

El mando a distancia no funciona./ Retire los obstáculos existentes entre el mando a

Aparece ruido de imagen./ Limpie el disco./ Este reproductor dispone de la función de

protección contra copias desarrollada porMacrovision. Ciertos discos DVD cuentan conseñales de protección contra copias. Alreproducir estos discos en la platina de vídeo,aparecerá ruido de imagen en determinadostelevisores y proyectores.

Velocidad de transmisión de bitsValor que indica la cantidad de datos de vídeocomprimidos en un DVD por segundo. La unidad esMbps (Mega bit por segundo). 1 Mbps indica que losdatos transmitidos por segundo son 1.000.000 de bits.Cuanto mayor sea la velocidad de transmisión de bits,mayor será la cantidad de datos. No obstante, esto nosiempre implica que puedan obtenerse imágenes decalidad superior.

CapítuloSecciones de una imagen o de una pieza musical de undisco DVD menores a los títulos. Un título se componede varios capítulos, y a cada capítulo se le asigna unnúmero que permite localizar el que se desee.

Control de limitaciónFunción de los discos DVD que permite limitar lareproducción del disco en función de la edad delusuario y de acuerdo con el nivel límite establecido encada país. La limitación varía dependiendo del disco;así es posible que al activarlo, la reproducción estécompletamente prohibida, se omitan las escenasviolentas o se sustituyan por otras, etc.

Dolby Digital (AC-3)Tecnología de compresión de audio digital creado porDolby Laboratories Corporation. Esta tecnologíaadmite el sonido periférico (Surround) de canal 5,1. Sise conecta un componente con decodificador DolbyDigital incorporado, se obtiene una presencia más realde audio.

Además, la capacidad de datos de un DVD dedos capas y de una sola cara es de 8,5 GB, la de unDVD de una sola capa y de doble cara 9,4 GB y la deun DVD de dos capas y de doble cara 17 GB.La información de imagen emplea el formato MPEG 2,una de las normas a nivel mundial de tecnologíadigital de compresión. Dicha información estácomprimida aproximadamente a 1/40 de su tamañooriginal. El DVD también emplea la tecnología decodificación de índice variable que cambia los datosque se asignan, en función del estado de la imagen.La información de audio se graba en Dolby Digital(AC-3) y en PCM, que permite disfrutar de unapresencia más real de audio.
