MEAT PACKING MARKET
Background and Product Overview
Tuthill manufactures a wide range of
positive displacement pumps that address
many of the challenging applications in themeat processing industry. Tuthill offers
positive displacement pumps in thecircumferential piston, internal gear andexternal gear designs, ranging in capacity
from .5 GPH to 550 GPM and available in
iron, stainless steel, and other materials.
Tuthill Pump products have established areputation for reliability and durability in the
meat processing industry.
The Tuthill HD Series is a circumferential
piston pump capable of running dry without
damage, handling a wide range of viscositiesand slurries, and is a low-shear design. Thisdesign incorporates the use of externally-
mounted, synchronized timing gears
operating close clearance impellers withexternal shaft-bearing support. It is available
in ductile iron and stainless steel
construction as standard, with othermaterials available on special order.
The GlobalGear internal gear design pump
offers a heavy-duty modular design capableof back pullout access to the fluid chamber
without disturbing the pipe. The modular
design features also minimize maintenance
costs and inventory requirements comparedto other internal gear pumps. GlobalGear
pumps are available in cast iron, stainless
steel, and other materials upon request.
Meat Processing Applications
For years, Tuthill Pump Group products
have provided reliable service for difficult
meat packing applications. Theseapplications do not typically represent
standard positive displacement applications,as they contain significant solid contentwith intermittent flow and potentially
abrasive characteristics.

rendering application.
Slaughtering Applications
Slaughtering applications consist of productat body temperature:
Leaf lard

A typical slaughtering application uses a
Tuthill HD Series product with a hopper
inlet port. As the animal carcass travels from
the slaughter floor, fats and organs arepulled from the cavity and dropped into a
trough with a hopper.
The Tuthill HD pump is ideal for this
application for the following reasons:
The pump can run dry withoutdamage with intermittent flow of
solid product.
The pump impeller sharp leadingedge is capable of shearing thesesolids to allow entry into the
pumping cavity, eliminating the need
for a grinder on the suction side ofthe pump.
The Model 125H pump is availablewith a removable faceplate for daily
cleaning, if necessary, and has asuction port design for easy
mounting of a hopper.
High torque-strength shafts providethe strength required to shear productas it enters the pump fluid chamber.
Slow operating speeds from 30 RPMto 150 RPM provide for adequate
fluid chamber filling and extendedwear life on abrasive applications
such as blood.
If a grinder is required for the pumpsuction port for applications such ascondemned birds, the output of the
grinder should be sized so as not to
starve the suction port of the pump.
Note: Shear-pin couplings arerecommended for these applications in caseof metal products falling into the hopper,
e.g. cutting knife. A quick replacement of a
shear pin minimizes downtime in these
applications.
Successful slaughtering applications are
found in pork, beef, poultry and fish plants.
Typical HD pumps used for these
applications include Models 125H, 120A,330 and 600 all with significant suction
port sizes to prevent bridging of producton the suction side of the pump.
Rendering Applications
A typical product pumped by a Tuthill pump
from the slaughtering floor is transferred to
a rendering application:
Black gut (hog entrails and stomachs) Hide fleshings Catch basin skimmings
Viscera, bone, and packing house
waste Rendered fat and fines
Poultry offal
Condemned birds
Skin Hot lard
Tallow
Tuthill HD pumps are recommended for
applications containing solids and abrasives,
while Tuthill GlobalGear pumps are
recommended for use with refined oils andliquid lards.
Tuthill GlobalGear internal gear pumps are
the first choice for reliable, low-maintenance
pumping of refined oils and liquid lards.
Generally, cast iron construction is used
with carbon bushings.

bearings, packing, and seals from

Rendering applications pump products from
a meat processing plant to be transported toother markets turkey offal is commonly
transported to pet food processors. Tall oil
may be transported to cosmetics or inkprocedures. Other rendered products such as
blood and fish waste are transported to
fertilizer producing plants. Positive
displacement pumps are required for loadingand unloading transport vehicles, and are
usually required for further processing of
products in the different markets.
Trim/Processing Applications
Trimming and processing floors typically
work with chilled meats or poultry. At
refrigerated temperatures, beef fat cannot bepumped with circumferential piston pumps.
Pork fats can easily be pumped with the
Tuthill SD pump, provided that there is a
positive screw feed of the product into the
pump port, and steam-traced discharge linesto enhance the flow of the solid product to
the rendering areas.
Tuthill SD pumps are recommended for
edible applications for the following
reasons:
316 stainless steel construction withremovable faceplate for accessibilityfor cleaning.
Sharp leading edge of the single-lobeimpeller provides strength to shearsolids.
High-torque strength shafts preventtwisting due to low drive speeds and
solid content.
PTFE packing is recommended forsolid pumping applications.
Hot clearance fluid chambers arerecommended for high-temperature
cleaning applications.
Poultry sausage applications require the
ability for a pump to handle trimmed
carcasses to a bone-meat separator.
Tuthill HD pumps are recommended for this
application for the following reasons:
Model 330 and 600 pumps provide a
large suction port to prevent bridgingof product in the suction area.
316 stainless steel construction isavailable.
Sharp leading edge of the single-lobeimpeller provides strength to shear

Wastewater Treatment
Applications
HD pumps are also very well suited to meat
processing wastewater treatmentapplications. Wastewater treatment
processes sometimes involve screening and
recovery of offal for rendering, and
dissolved air flotation systems producewaste sludge matter. The HD is well suited
to both applications for the following
reasons:
Tolerance for run-dry withintermittent flows.
Ability to pump large solids,including hard solids such as bonematter.
Ability to tolerate a wide range ofviscosities from water-like to thick.
Tolerance for pumping frothy liquidstreams without vapor locking.

Designs
The Tuthill HD positive displacementcircumferential piston pump design has
replaced progressing cavity pumps due to
the ability to run dry without damage
(intermittent flow to the pump), shear solidsand organs with a sharp leading impeller,
easy accessibility to the fluid chamber, and a
smaller mounting footprint.

rotary lobe pump designs for the ability to
shear large solids and organs with the sharp
