INTRODUCTION TO GUATEMALA• The land now commonly known as Guatemala is one of the places
where the Mayans settled and started civilization• They started civilization at the first 1000 years after A.D.• For the second half of the 20th century, Guatemala has been
losing and receiving multiple governments due to battle• After 300 years of war, Guatemala finally received independence
as a Spanish country• All this war ended when Guatemala received the peace treaty in
1996
HISTORY OF GUATEMALA• During the conquest of Mexico that took place from 1519-
1521, one of the Cortés' small party leading members by the name of Pedro de Alvarado is sent to travel South• He is sent to claim the strip that connects South America and
North America• Pedro is successful in his journey and claims Guatemala and
it's people for Mexico leading to the independence for Guatemala being a Spanish country
THE GUATEMALAN CULTURE• Religion : Catholic/Christianity, Protestantism. Indigenous Mayan Beliefs• Language : Spanish and a lot of gestures depending on greeting and formality,
formality also justifies how and how loud you speak• Music : Guatemalan's played composed classical music (European Style)/ a ton
of styles coming from Mexico, Argentina, but for the majority, good old America/ their instruments consisted of acoustic guitar and the marimba
• Food : Tortillas, beans, rice, chicken, and sometimes licuados " actual fresh fruit smoothies"
• Currency used in Guatemala is the quetzal• The bases of Guatemala's are of Mayan and Garifuna or Caribbean culture
ALL SAINTS DAY
• A Catholic holiday where people gather round to honor the dead and respected people who passed away• It takes place on November the first• Also celebrated in other Catholic/Christian
countries
