Welcome to Santiago; we greatly appreciate you having chosen TURISTIK to discover this wonderful city. In this guide you will find information on Santiago and the surroundings of the most important touristic, gastronomic and commercial areas of the city.

RELEVANT INFORMATION – SANTIAGO TURISTIK

The Santiago Turistik service operates between 9:30 AM and 6:00 PM. Until 4:30PM you can board the bus in any Turistik stop knowing that you can travel along the whole circuit without getting off. Until 5:30 PM you can board at any stop and travel up to 5 stops further on.

Santiago is quite a safe city, however as in any large city and specially in its downtown area, it is important to take certain precautions which include minimizing the exposure of valuable objects and while not in movement in public spaces, trying to stay close to points such as shops, cafes, and kiosks.

Once the Santiago TURISTIK pass is used for the first time, it becomes non refundable. TURISTIK reserves the right to modify the circuit due to force majeure.

INFORMACION RELEVANTE – SANTIAGO TURISTIK

El servicio Santiago TURISTIK opera entre las 9:30 AM y 6:00 PM. Hasta las 4:30 PM podrás abordar el bus en cualquier parada Turistik, sabiendo que podrás hacer el circuito completo sin bajadas. Hasta las 5:30 PM podrás subir en cualquier parada y avanzar hasta 5 paradas.

Santiago es una ciudad bastante segura, sin embargo como en cualquier gran ciudad y especialmente en su centro, es importante tomar ciertas precauciones que incluyen minimizar la exposición de objetos de valor y en lugares públicos si es que no se está en movimiento, tratar de mantenerse próximo a lugares tales como tiendas, cafés y kioscos.

Una vez que se utiliza por primera vez el pase Santiago TURISTIK, éste no tendrá derecho a devolución. Por razones de fuerza mayor, TURISTIK se reserva el derecho a modificar el circuito del servicio.

ENGLISH The Plaza de Armas represents the real heart of Santiago. This type of square exists throughout Chile due to the fact that when the Spaniards established cities, they always used this point as the axis of their square plans.

From the TURISTIK Plaza de Armas Stop (Monjitas Street across from #821) you will be able to visit and see some of the city’s most relevant historic buildings which include: the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Santiago City Hall, the Central Post Office, the Casa Colorada and Santiago Museum, the former National Congress, the Royal House of Customs and Precolombian museum, the Judicial Palace, and the Palacio de la Real Audiencia and National Historic Museum.

ESPAÑOL La Plaza de Armas representa el verdadero corazón de Santiago. Este tipo de plazas existe en todo Chile y se explican debido a que cuando los españoles establecían ciudades, siempre utilizaban ese punto como eje de sus planos cuadriculados.

Desde la Parada TURISTIK Plaza de Armas (Calle Monjitas frente al #821) podrás visitar y contemplar algunos de los edificios históricos más relevantes de la ciudad que incluyen: La Catedral Metropolitana, la Municipalidad de Santiago, el Correo Central, la Casa Colorada y Museo de Santiago, el Ex Congreso Nacional, la Real Casa de Aduanas y Museo Precolombino, los Tribunales de Justicia, y el Palacio de la Real Audiencia y Museo Histórico Nacional.

ENGLISH The building of the Central Market was initially planned to house exhibitions of local artists, however in 1872 President Federico Errazuriz Zañartu inaugurated this neoclassical construction as a market. Today this picturesque premise as a food-supply market is a greatly visited showcase especially of Chilean seafood. Typical dishes off the Chilean table are prepared in the heart of the market, including the famous Conger eel broths and seafood cauldrons.

From the TURISTIK Mercado Central Stop (Puente Street across from #889) you will be able to see and visit buildings and places of interest which include: the Estación Mapocho, the monument to Chile’s Naval Glories, and “La Piojera”.

ESPAÑOL El edificio del Mercado Central fue pensado inicialmente para exhibir exposiciones de artistas nacionales, sin embargo en 1872 el Presidente de la República Federico Errázuriz Zañartu inauguró el recinto de estilo neoclásico como mercado. Hoy este pintoresco recinto como centro de abastecimiento, es una concurrida vitrina especialmente de los productos del mar chileno. En el centro del mercado las marisquerías preparan platos típicos de la mesa chilena, incluyendo los más famosos como los caldillos de congrio y las pailas marinas.

Desde la parada TURISTIK Mercado Central (Calle Puente frente al #889) podrás ver y explorar edificios y lugares de interés que incluyen: la Estación Mapocho, el monumento a las Glorias Navales de Chile, y “La Piojera”.

ENGLISH Around Plaza de la Constitucion, Constitution Square, you will find some of the most important buildings and monuments of Chile’s executive power, amongst them, the best representative of the neoclassical architecture in our country, the Moneda Palace, seat of the Presidency of the Chilean government. Its construction was undertaken between 1784 and 1805 according to the project of the Italian architect Joaquin Toesca, and its original destination was to be the Royal Mint house, the reason for its name.In 1846 President Manuel Bulnes used an area of the building as the Presidents’ residence, being the first president to live there; and later, President Carlos Ibáñez del campo, the last one there in 1958.

From the TURISTIK Plaza de la Constitucion Stop (Teatinos Street across from #248) you will be able to see and visit buildings and places of interest which include: the Constitution Square, the Moneda Palace, the Palacio de la Moneda Cultural Center, the Metropolitan Government building, the Santiago Stock exchange, the Union Club, the Bulnes boulevard, and the Dieciocho neighborhood.

ESPAÑOL En torno a la Plaza de la Constitución encontrarás algunos de los edificios y monumentos más importantes ligados al poder ejecutivo del Estado de Chile, entre ellos, el mejor representante de la arquitectura estilo neoclásico en nuestro país, el Palacio de la Moneda, sede de la Presidencia del Gobierno de Chile. Su construcción se llevó a cabo entre 1784 y 1805 según el proyecto del arquitecto italiano Joaquín Toesca y su destino original fue ser la Real Casa de Moneda, la razón de su nombre actual. En 1846 el Presidente Manuel Bulnes dispuso destinar un sector del edificio a residencia de los presidentes, siendo el primer mandatario que vivió en el edificio y el Presidente Carlos Ibañez del Campo, el último en 1958.

Desde la parada TURISTIK Plaza de la Constitución (Calle Teatinos frente al #248) podrás ver y explorar edificios y lugares de interés que incluyen: La plaza de la Constitución, el Palacio de la Moneda, el Centro Cultural Palacio de la Moneda, la Intendencia Metropolitana, la Bolsa de Comercio de Santiago, el Club de la Unión, la Universidad de Chile, el paseo Bulnes, y el Barrio Dieciocho.

ENGLISH The Santa Lucia hill has been one of the most relevant places in Santiago since the city was founded by Pedro de Valdivia on the 12th of February of 1541. The hill’s monumental neoclassical entrance was completed in 1902, and harmonizes around a sculpture of the god Neptune an architectonic unit with curved stairways, fountains, and a spacious terrace with a triumphant arch crowned by a dome. This unit constitutes a good image of the lifestyle of Santiago’s high society of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

From the TURISTIK Santa Lucia Stop (Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins avenue across from #406) you will be able to see and visit buildings and places of interest which include: the Santa Lucia hill, the National Library, the Paris-Londres neighborhood, the main building of the Universidad Catolica de Chile, and the Lastarria neighborhood which has a strong cultural character where you will be able to find art galleries, restaurants, and cultural centers.

ESPAÑOL El Cerro Santa Lucía ha sido uno de los puntos más relevantes de Santiago desde que la ciudad fuera fundada por Pedro de Valdivia el 12 de Febrero de 1541. La monumental entrada neoclásica del cerro fue terminada en 1902 y armoniza en torno a una escultura del dios Neptuno todo un conjunto arquitectónico con escalinatas curvas, piletas, una amplia terraza, y un arco de triunfo rematado por una cúpula. El conjunto constituye una imagen muy evocadora del estilo de vida de la alta sociedad santiaguina de fines del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX.

Desde la parada TURISTIK Santa Lucía (Av. Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins frente al #406) podrás ver y explorar lugares de interés que incluyen: el cerro Santa Lucía, la Biblioteca Nacional, el barrio Paris-Londres, la iglesia de San Francisco del Monte, la Casa Central de la Universidad Católica de Chile, y el barrio Lastarria que cuenta con un fuerte sello cultural donde se pueden encontrar galerías de arte, restaurantes, y centros culturales.

ENGLISH The history of Providencia dates back to 1897 and is directly related the sisters of the Divine Providence who arrived to Chile from Canada in 1853. The amusing part is that their landing here was due to the fact that their original destination which was Oregon in the U.S.A. was flooded, and not knowing how to return to their home country, they met the captain of a Chilean ship who brought them to this remote corner of the world.

Providencia is an important area of the city’s commerce and gastronomy. In its surroundings you will find the Schacht Palace and the Providencia Cultural Center; the traditional Pedro de Valdivia and Ricardo Lyon avenues; and many fun shops, cafes, and restaurants. The TURISTIK Providencia Stop is located on the Lota street across from #2257.

ESPAÑOL La historia de Providencia data desde 1897 y se asocia directamente a las hermanas de la Divina Providencia que llegaron a este lugar en 1853 procedentes de Canadá. Lo anecdótico de su llegada se debe a que su destino original era Oregon en Estados Unidos, sin embargo debido a que éste estaba inundado y no hallando cómo volver a su patria, se toparon con el capitán de un barco chileno que las trajo a este remoto rincón del mundo donde se radicaron.

Providencia es una importante zona de comercio y gastronomía de la ciudad. En su entorno podrás encontrar el palacio Schacht y Centro Cultural de Providencia; las tradicionales avenidas Pedro de Valdivia y Ricardo Lyon; y muchas entretenidas tiendas, cafés, y restaurantes. La Parada TURISTIK Providencia se ubica en la calle Lota frente al #2257.

ENGLISH The lower area of El Golf receives is also known by some as Sanhattan, name which mixes Manhattan and Santiago. This is the new financial and hotel district in Santiago, and its strong development from the 1990s onwards in part is explained due to the important amount of high level executives which live on the east side of the city which were looking to decrease the travel time to their offices.

In this area you will find a predominance of office buildings, where some represent the best of the modern architecture of Santiago.

Between the El Golf Sanhattan and Isidora Goyenechea stops you will find many restaurants and cafes, as well as the Peru square where a fun antique fair takes place on Sunday’s.

The TURISTIK El Golf Stop is located on the Vitacura Avenue across from #2841.

ESPAÑOL La zona baja de El Golf también es conocida por algunos como Sanhattan, término que mezcla los nombres de Santiago y Manhattan. Esta es la nueva zona financiera y hotelera de la ciudad, cuya alta tasa de crecimiento desde 1990 en adelante se explica por la gran cantidad de ejecutivos que vivían en el oriente de la ciudad y que buscaban disminuir los tiempos de viaje hacia sus trabajos.

En este sector encontrarás una predominancia de edificios de oficinas, donde algunos representan lo mejor de la arquitectura moderna de Santiago. Entre las paradas de El Golf Sanhattan e Isidora Goyenechea encontrarás muchos restaurantes y cafés, como también la plaza Perú donde una simpática feria de antigüedades se instala los domingo. ENGLISH The National Fine Arts Museum, one of Chile’s most important museums, has approximately 3000 pieces of art which include paintings, sculptures, and drawings which extend from the colonial period up to present. This neoclassic building which integrates Art Nouveau elements, was designed by Emilio Jecquier and was built at the beginning of the XXth century together with other public buildings, parks, and monuments for the celebration of the Centennial Anniversary of Chile’s Independence. The museum is open to public Tuesdays through Sundays.

From the TURISTIK Bellas Artes Stop (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes entrance) you will be able to visit and explore buildings and places of interest which include: the Forestal Park, the Santa Lucia hill, the Lastarria neighborhood, and the Municipal Theatre.
