Arturo Michelena

Arturo Michelena is one o the most important

gures in the history o Venezuelan Art. He cha-

racterizes one o the artistic genres o the country

in the 19th century with his unique style. Arturo

Michelena was born in the city o Valencia on the

16th o June 1863. The amily in which he was born

had a vocation in a classic style o painting. This

style urther inuenced Arturo Michelenas works.

His oremost teacher during his youth was his a-

ther, the painter Juan Antonio Michelena.

Arturo Michelena made a series o paintings in

1874 that illustrated the habitual lie o a deni-

te clan o the Venezuelans. During 1879 to 1882,

Michelena and his ather started an Academy o Artin Valencia. The murals and copies o old pictures

made by Michelena during this period were dis-

played in the Centenary Hall o Caracas, and ear-

ned much appreciation and notice. Michelena let

or Paris in 1885, and thereater accomplished the

best works o his lie.

Michelena has contributed with several unique and signicant works o art to the

19th century artistic genre in Venezuela. He specialized on narrative styles o painting

and documentation, and most o his subjects include historic scenes and episodes.

Some o his greatest works are An electoral visit, The young mother and Carlota

Corday, Miranda, The Descent, Berruecos and The Charity.

He returned to Venezuela with an ill health ater sufering rom contracted tubercu-losis in Paris. He died on the 29th o July 1898. He had continued his work even during

the last days o his lie.
