Established in 2004, TSM’s main objective is to enable mining companies to meet society’s needs for minerals, metals and energy products in the most socially, economically and environmentally responsible way. The program’s core strengths are:

Accountability – Assessments are conducted at the facility level where mining activity takes place – the only program in the world to do this in our sector...SAME AS UNE. Transparency – Annual reporting against 23 indicators with independent verification every three years. UNE IS WIDER. Credibility – Includes ongoing consultation with a national Community of Interest Advisory panel to improve industry performance and shape TSM for continual advancement. AUSTRALIA The Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program for the Mining Industry (LPSDP) is a program that promotes sustainable development and industry self-regulation through proactive adoption of leading practice principles. The program was launched in 2006 and is administered by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. The LPSDP provides practical guidance to the mining industry through handbooks and workshops. Such resources assist with the implementation of leading practice, and offer the mining industry and other stakeholders the opportunity to improve their social and environmental performance.

To address the challenges raised when engaging with stakeholders, the OECD has developed guidance for practitioners in the mining, oil and gas industries.

The guidance provides:

a practical framework for identifying and managing risks with regard to stakeholder engagement activities

an assessment framework to evaluate their stakeholder engagement performance

CONCLUSIONES

• La Certificación UNE 22470/22480 en Gestión Minera Sostenible (GMS) es la única que define la cuantificación de los indicadores y por tanto permite un control objetivo externo con posibilidad de comparación, mejorando a los otros esquemas internacionales.

• Puede dar a nuestra industria el apoyo necesario para convencer a los diferentes “Grupos de Interés”, en particular Administración y sociedad civil.

• Es la única establecida a nivel nacional en la UE y publicada en un boletín oficial. Otras iniciativas o esquemas son privados. La industria minera española debe aprovechar esta ventaja.

• Una norma voluntaria (como las ISO) sólo llega a tener importancia si hay un número suficiente de usuarios. Nuestro reto es certificarnos para demostrar que lo que se hace se hace muy bien
