Renovate and Celebrate

With the annual Fiesta in full swing, it may be overwhelming to consider that next weekend a second collection will be taken during all the Masses. However, the monthly offerings are critical in keeping our iconic structures and grounds presentable. We continue to set aside the funds from these collections with the intention of ad-dressing a few maintenance issues—Termite extermi-nation, repairing and painting of Chapel front doors and re-pavement of the parking lot. Collectively, these projects are extremely costly but the goal of the Reno-vate and Celebrate committee is to prioritize the needs of our aging churches and grounds and insure that the money, so lovingly donated by parishioners and guests, is used to keep our historic churches in good repair. We have not waivered from this vision realiz-ing it takes time to raise necessary cash to accomplish these major tasks. We thank you for your patience and are grateful for your continued support. Renovar y Celebrar Con la Fiesta anual en pleno apogeo, puede ser abrumador consi-derar que el próximo fin de semana se realizará una segunda co-lecta durante todas las Misas. Sin embargo, las ofrendas mensua-les son fundamentales para mantener presentables nuestras Igle-sias y campos. Los fondos se siguen apartando con la intención de abordar algunos problemas de mantenimiento: exterminio de termitas, reparación y pintar las puertas en la Capilla y repavi-mentar el estacionamiento. Juntos, estos proyectos son extrema-damente costosos, pero el objetivo de nuestro comité es dar prioridad a las necesidades de nuestras Iglesias y asegurar que el dinero, tan amorosamente donado por los feligreses, se use para mantener las Iglesias en buena condicion. Sabemos que se nece-sita tiempo para recaudar el dinero necesario para llevar a cabo estas tareas principales. Le agradecemos su paciencia y agrade-cemos su apoyo continuo. Dios los bendiga.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE THREE The Open Arms (Brazos Abiertos) of San Gabriel Mission extend far into the Northern Sierra mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. Last weekend I had the wonderful experience of visiting San Pedro Yolox, a town in the Northern Sierra Mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. San Pedro is 5 hours north of the city of Oaxaca by bus. The road winds and turns deep into the mountains. The last couple of miles to the town are on a gravel road. The town sits on the side of a mountain; there are many waterfalls and water springs that supply clean and fresh water to the town. I traveled with 10 other people from our Spanish prayer group Brazos Abiertos. I was there because at our San Gabriel Mission we have many parishioners from Oaxaca and neighboring towns. Last April a group of about 55 members from Brazos Abiertos brought a retreat to this town. Over a thousand (not counting the 100’s of children that they brought) people from this re-gion came to attend the three day retreat. After the retreat, Brazos Abiertos sent a member that lived with them for two and half months, to do the follow-up religious formation for some of the people that lived the retreat. We went there for the graduation of a group of 52 participants from the Town of San Pedro Yolox alone. Brazos Abiertos is the largest and most active ministry that we have in our parish. Brazos Abiertos has been part of our parish for over 34 years. This prayer group alone is re-sponsible for much of the evangelization that goes on at our parish in Spanish. Many of the Brazos Abiertos members from Oaxaca have experienced a conversion and renewal of their faith through their participation in the prayer group. Their religious experience has been so profound that they wanted to share it with their families back home. So, last year a couple of the leaders from the group went to visit the town. They met with the local priest and local civil authorities to talk about the possibility of bringing the retreat there. All contact was formalized through letters of request and intro-duction with the local priest and myself. I have supported Brazos Abiertos in this process of ex-tending their evangelization ministry to the places of origin of many of their members. Brazos Abiertos has brought these retreats and formation to other places in Mexico. For many years our prayer group brought their evangelization ministry to the border cities of Ensenada and Mexicali, Mexi-co. About four years ago they ventured deeper into Mexico to the state of Jalisco. Last year they went to the state of Za-catecas and this year to San Pedro Yolox in Oaxaca. All of the places they bring their ministry to are the hometowns of some of their members. Brazos Abiertos funds all of their travels and expenses through their own fundraising. Our San Gabriel Mission is becoming a beacon of evangelization far beyond our parish boundaries into Mexico through this labor of love from our Spanish prayer group Brazos Abiertos.

Los Brazos Abiertos de la Misión de San Gabriel se extienden hasta las montañas de la sierra norte de Oaxaca, México. La semana pasa-da tuve la bella experiencia de visitar San Pedro Yolox, un pueblo en las montañas de la sierra norte de Oaxaca. San Pedro está a 5 horas al

norte de la ciudad de Oaxaca por autobús. La carretera ser-pentea y dobla a lo profundo de la sierra. Las últimas millas hacia el pueblo son en carretera de terracería. El pueblo se encuentra en el costado de la montaña, alimentado de casca-das y manantiales que proveen agua fresca y limpia. Viajé con 10 personas de nuestro grupo de oración, Brazos Abier-tos. Fuimos a este pueblo porque muchos de los parroquianos en nuestra Misión de San Gabriel son de esta región. En abril de este año un grupo de 55 personas de Brazos Abiertos traje-ron un retiro a este pueblo. Más de 1000 personas asistieron a este retiro (sin contar los cientos de niños) de este pueblo y pueblos vecinos. Después del retiro, Brazos Abiertos mandó a uno de sus miembros para continuar la formación de algu-nos que vivieron el retiro. Estábamos ahí para celebrar la graduación de un grupo de 52 participantes, solo del pueblo de San Pedro Yolox. Brazos Abiertos es el grupo más grande y activo que tene-mos en la parroquia. Brazos Abiertos tiene más de 34 años de ser parte de nuestra parroquia. Este grupo de oración es responsable de la evangelización en español que se lleva a cabo en nuestra parroquia. Muchos de los miembros de Bra-zos Abiertos de Oaxaca han vivido una conversión y renova-ción de su fe por medio de su participación en este grupo de oración. Sus experiencias religiosas han sido tan profundas que deseaban compartirla con sus familias en Oaxaca. El año pasado dos líderes de Brazos visitaron el pueblo. Se entrevis-taron con el párroco de la iglesia y las autoridades civiles para hablar de la posibilidad de traer el retiro. Todo contacto se formalizo por medio de cartas con el párroco local y con-migo. Este es el proceso que yo he venido apoyando en Brazos Abiertos para extender el ministerio de evangelización a los lugares de origen de sus miembros. Brazos Abiertos tiene ya historia en llevar retiros y formación a varios lugares en Mé-xico. Por muchos años nuestro grupo de oración llevo su ministerio de evangelización a las ciudades fronterizas de Ensenada y Mexicali. Hace cuatro años se aventuraron más allá de la frontera al estado de Jalisco. El año pasado fueron al estado de Zacatecas y este año a San Pedro Yolox en Oa-xaca. Todos los lugares a los que han traído su ministerio de evangelización son pueblos de origen de algunos de sus miembros. Brazos Abiertos provee sus propios fondos para sus viajes y gastos por medio de sus actividades. Nuestra Mi-sión de San Gabriel se ha convertido en una fuente de evan-gelización más allá de nuestras fronteras parroquiales en Mé-xico por medio de esta labor de amor de nuestro grupo de oración Brazos Abiertos.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Take a deep breath of air and hold it for a minute. Then exhale it. You might be interested to know that this single breath of air contains at least three nitrogen atoms that have been inhaled by EVERY person who has ever lived, includ-ing Leonardo da Vinci, Winston Churchill, and Abraham Lincoln, to name a few. Likewise with the animals, even the dinosaurs have breathed some of these same nitrogen atoms that you took into your body. And the air that you just ex-haled will circle the earth in the next 12 months. That scientific fact highlights the connectedness between us as human beings. Just as we share our chemistry with other members of the human family, we are all interconnected and interde-pendent socially. We are affected positively or negatively by each other’s actions. During the cultural era of the “me” generation, it was common to hear people say, “As long as I’m not hurting anyone, it’s nobody’s business what I do.” Unfortunately, everything we do affects other people, and there’s no such thing as an independent act. I say unfortunate-ly, but maybe it’s really fortunate all of our actions affects each other because this means we have to power and ability to change so much for the good. As the poet John Donne wrote, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” So know that whatever you think and do, someone else is affected by it, for good or ill. And that’s the real question. Not whether you make a difference, BUT what kind of difference are you go-ing to make?

Congratulations to our Royal Court

The 2017-2018 Fiesta Royal Court Coronation was held last Saturday in the historic Mission Gardens. Congratulations to the young ladies who have been crowned for this year’s Royal Court. They are Queen Felicia Valdez of Mission High School, First Princess Briana Cruz Guerra of Gabrielino High School (GHS), and Second Princess Stephany Flores Lemus also from GHS. The Court reigns over all Fiesta events and serves as ambassadors of goodwill to the greater community until next year’s Fiesta.

FIESTA 2017 RAFFLE!

This year, we feature a 2017 Nissan Versa or $10,000 in cash for the grand prize. The winner of the top prize can choose the car or cash. 2nd prize winner will re-ceive $2,000 in cash, 3rd prize winner will receive $1,000 in cash, and 4th prize winner will receive $500 in cash. Official rules regarding taxes and fees that apply to all winners are on our website. This endeavor can be successful only with your help, so we are counting on you to help us by selling or buying two (2) books of raffle tickets. Tickets are $5 each, and each book contains 10 tickets. You can obtain tickets and return ticket stubs and money to the Raffle Booth lo-cated at the entrance to the Parish Center during the Fiesta.

FIESTA Tickets

Last year, we transitioned from cash to tickets (scrip) for the Fiesta. The use of tickets removes the need to make change at each food, beverage and game booth, and it essentially speeds up the lines and create a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Fiesta Scrip Tickets and Ride Tickets are being sold at three booths on the Fiesta Grounds (near the stage, near Christian Service, and in the High School Parking Lot.

Volunteer Today

We still need your help for Fiesta. Help is needed es-pecially on Sunday for grounds maintenance, after closing with the Midnighters / Sunday Night Team, Clean Up Day on Labor Day, the Appreciation Dinner in Late September, and office work/filing during the month of September.
