WHAT DOES IT FEEL TO BE INSIDE A MANE?

On the occasion of Valencia Design Week –Valencia Disseny Week 2016- More with Less crea-tive team, headed by Jordi Iranzo and Àngela Montagud, created a conceptual and ephemeral installation for a hair salon; a totally evocative space that turns the hairdressing ritual into an extrasensory experience.

Hair, element always present in a hair salon, is took as concept and design trigger along with the following question: What does it feel to be inside a mane? In line with the “more with less” philosophy, the ephemeral installation is materialized with a single low-cost material: twisted cotton rope. More than 7km of rope, cut into more than 5500 pieces colonize the indoor space, hanging from the ceiling as if it were an artificial mane that creates a peaceful and surrealist atmosphere.

As design premise, the hairdresser should be able to keep doing his job, so the ephemeral installation must respect the space functionality as much as possible. Playing with the arrange-ment and length of the rope pieces, More with Less design adapts to the existing architecture, lightning points and working spaces, creating subtle changes in rhythm while differentiating the reception desk area, hair washing zone as well as the one of hair cutting and hairstyling. Furthermore, the rope neutral colour mimetizes and blends with the white walls, highlighting certain wooden elements and creating a pure and clear ambiance.

As if the ephemeral installation were a hairstyles showcase, each dressing table has a different design: a blunt fringe, a rounded fringe and a pyramid-shape one; different haircuts for the arti-ficial mane that frame the mirrors and characterized each hairstyling space.

THE MISSING PIECE

EPHEMERAL INSTALLATION IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF LA LAITERIE, IN STRASBOURG, FRANCE

There are some ‘junk spaces’ in the neighbourhood of La Laiterie, in Strasbourg. We had to ‘build’ and ephemeral installation in one of the six places proposed. The materials we were able to use were 25 wooden strips which we had to cut and screw from Monday to Thursday. On Friday, the installation had to be moved to the given area.

The aim of the project was to invite visitors and neighbours to have an active role in the daily life of their neighbourhood by using more often these so-called ‘junk spaces’.

Viaje de la raíz a la copa.

Ubicarse. Partir, pasar, dudar. La arquitectura torna paisaje al posarse. Se dibuja un espacio intermedio desprovisto de límites.

Descentrarse. Subir, bajar.

La arquitectura torna escala. El explorador descubre qué esconde la superficie y qué aguarda en las alturas.

Posicionarse. Andar, trepar.

La arquitectura torna juego. Desplazarse sin directrices. Estar sobre, bajo, en. Permanecer in-móvil, recorrer con pies y manos.

Re-tornar. Aprender, aprehender.

La arquitectura torna viaje. Dejar que al volver al punto de partida el paisaje te haya cambiado.

SCÉNARIOS À LA CAMPAGNE

ACADEMIC PROJECT COMPLETED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER AND DECEMBER 2012 AS PART OF THE COURSE ‘ATELIER RHÉNAN’ DIRECTED BY PROF. GEORGES HEINTZ

Once an area in the surroundings of Strasbourg, France was chosen, the stu-dents were invited to suggest risky and somehow utopian proposals. After mapping and investigating the chosen landscape, we worked on two propo-sals, two scenarios, two mise-en-scenes.

The first one was what we called ‘Strategie en bandes’. We divided the terri-tory into strips or sections. A specific use was designated for each strip.

In the second proposal we bore in mind the initial analysis of the territory we had made and we decided to densify the area best known as ‘the green corri-dor’. We proposed a large natural park; a ‘Central Park’ in the middle of the Alsatian countryside.

BACK TO THE LAND

ACADEMIC PROJECT COMPLETED BETWEEN FREBUARY AND JUNE 2012

back to the land is a term covering a number of agrarian movements across different historical periods. The common thread is a call for people to take up smallholding and to grow food from the land on a small-scale basis, whether for themselves or for others.

Located in a fertile area within the limits of the university campus in Madrid, back to the land is a research center which invites everybody interested in issues concerning agriculture to live in a research environment.

CULTURAL CENTRE IN CESENA, ITALY

REHABILITATION AND REVITALIZATION OF THE SURROUNDINGS OF THE MALATESTIANA LIBRARY, ALSO KNOWN AS THE MALATESTA NOVELLO LIBRARY

La ciudad

La ciudad de Cesena se sitúa en la región Emilia-Romagna, al norte de Italia. Es una ciudad de origen etrusco, con calles estrechas y edificios de baja altura, coronada por un edificio construi-do sobre una colina: la Rocca malatestiana.

El lugar

El ejercicio propuesto consistía en reflexionar sobre un complejo arquitectónico, cuyo origen es la nave de la antigua biblioteca Malatestiana de Cesena. Fundada a mediados del siglo XV, fue la primera biblioteca pública del continente europeo. A su inicial nave, ubicada en el interior del complejo actual, se han ido sumando diversas edificaciones: claustros, patios, pasajes e incluso el inacabado palacio Ghini.

En primer lugar, se estudió y reflexionó sobre el conjunto histórico de la biblioteca a nivel urba-no, atendiendo a la escala de los diferentes elementos arquitectónicos que lo conforman y cómo se relacionan entre sí. A continuación, se desarrolló el proyecto en la zona de intervención, incluida en el interior del conjunto. Es el espacio vacío situado junto al no construido patio del palacio y sus alrededores.

El proyecto

Aunque en un principio se proponía llevar a cabo una ampliación de la biblioteca pública exis-tente en los edificios colindantes con la nave de la antigua biblioteca Malatestiana (hoy en día es una sala museo), y tras una reflexión sobre la forma que debe tener una biblioteca en la ac-tualidad; se decidió llevar a cabo la propuesta de un centro cultural de actividades y lectura, un complemento a la ya existente biblioteca en lugar de una ampliación o sustitución.

En un contexto marcado por su historia, lo interesante es recuperar los espacios arquitectónicos, mantener su forma y esencia, pero avanzar y adaptarse a los tiempos que corren por medio de un uso más actual del espacio. Es por esta razón que, además de intervenir en el espacio vacío que queda en el conjunto de la biblioteca, se decide recuperar parte del palacio Ghini y convertirlo en un centro de investigación y conferencias. De esta manera, se recupera -sin ser alterado en su forma- un espacio que hoy en día carece de uso y se vincula a la propuesta y a su entorno con el carácter que merece.

Un haz de muros exteriores se entrecruzan generando espacios intermedios en los que el jardín adquiere una dimensión más doméstica. Una serie de cubiertas quedan suspendi-das sobre los muros y generan ámbitos de recogimiento, cerrados con cristal. Las estancias interiores quedan definidas por estos elementos, los planos horizontales y verticales de muros y cubiertas. Es un espacio para ser vivido, para ser recorrido. Se decidió llevar a cabo el trazado de muros a partir de la propia imagen de la ciudad: una ciudad italiana con cierto carácter laberíntico en el que los edificios actúan como edificio-muro. El espacio urbano está definido por el vacío que queda entre edificios. Esta idea es tomada como premisa para llevar a cabo una arquitectura definido por el vacío que queda entre muros.

Tras tomar esta decisión, aparecen una serie de elementos ensamblados de forma no lineal. Estos elementos son las estancias interiores del centro cultural y los fragmentos de jardín limitados entre los muros exteriores, que se interseccionan y se solapan en múltiples com-binaciones, generando una diversidad de relaciones interior/exterior que califican cada espacio como único, claramente diferenciado del resto. Estas relaciones no se perciben de una manera directa, como una secuencia narrativa continua, sino que el visitante las irá descubriendo a medida que explore el laberinto del edificio.

El nuevo edificio no es un obstáculo en un lugar que antes no estaba ocupado. No se impide el paso de un extremo a otro, se invita a participar, a recorrerlo, de una manera permeable pero no forzada. El edificio puede acompañar en su recorrido al visitante sin que éste sea partícipe del interior, como un paso por una calle más o un espacio público.

El proyecto se organiza en planta baja y planta piso, siendo esta última dividida en dos ni-veles, de tal manera que la altura mayor conecta con el palacio Ghini. Esta conexión tam-bién se realiza en planta baja. Se separan la zona adulta de la zona infantil, respondiendo a las necesidades espaciales de cada uno dando independencia a los niños, ofreciéndoles un espacio exclusivo tanto interior como exterior.

Los muros son de hormigón visto tanto en el exterior como en el interior y tienen una textura con relieve. El carácter horizontal e irregular que queda impreso en la fachada permite al nuevo edificio quedar integrado en la propia horizontalidad que proporciona el ladrillo de la biblioteca Malatestiana y el palacio Ghini.

Al ser un proyecto que intenta reflexionar sobre el conjunto histórico de la biblioteca a nivel ur-bano, nace con la pretensión de construir el propio espacio urbano que forma el nuevo edificio. Se recuperarán pavimentos ya existentes y se incorporarán otros nuevos, siguiendo el trazado del edificio, jugando con los diferentes acabados del mismo.

Enric Miralles y Benedetta Tagliabue recogieron sus intenciones para el anteproyecto de la Bi-blioteca Pública de Palafolls que presentaron al concurso de ideas, el año 1997, en el siguiente texto:

“Unos libros y un sueño…El edificio es una construcción cualquiera en un jardín…[…] Son unos muros que quizás estaban en este lugar.Darle a la biblioteca un tipo de gravedad de laberinto.Una serie de habitaciones y jardines ensamblados de manera no lineal […]”
