17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.

18 Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

19 Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.

Reflections on Matthew 18:15 - 20 Reflexiones en Mateo 18:15 - 20 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Sept. 7, 2014 Today is the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Gospel speaks about two subjects: How to deal with a brother who sins against you, and the necessity of praying in community. The early Church Fathers have much to say about this subject. Let us see what we can learn from them, and make some applications to our lives today.

Hoy es el Vigésimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. El evangelio habla de dos temas: Como tratar a un hermano que ha pecado contra ti, y la necesidad de rezar en comunidad. Los Padres de la Iglesia temprana tienen mucho que decir de estas cosas. Vamos a ver que aprendemos de ellos, y hacer unas cuantas aplicaciones.

Chrysostom (in The Gospel of Matthew, Homily 60.1) notes that if your brother sins against you, Jesus does not say, “accuse him” or “punish him” or “take him to court”. Rather he says, “Correct him.” For he is possessed, as it were, by some stupor, and drunk in his anger and disgrace. The one who is healthy must go to the one who is sick. Conduct your judgment of him privately. Make your cure easy to accept. Tell him what you have suffered from him. Help him see his indiscretion.

Crisóstomo (en El Evangelio de Mateo, Homilía 60.1) nota que si tu hermano peca contra ti, Jesús no dice: “acúsalo” o “castígalo” o “llévalo a la corte.” Mas bien dice “corríjalo”. Porque está poseído, es decir, por un estupor, o emborrachado en su coraje y desgracia. El que esta en plena salud debe ir al que esta enfermo. Conduce tu juicio de él privadamente. Haz que tu curación sea fácil para aceptar. Dile lo que haz sufrido de él. Ayúdalo ver su indiscreción.

If he does not listen, and if he stubbornly flares up, call to your side someone else or even two others, so that two witnesses my corroborate all that’s said. The more shameless and boldfaced he is, so much the more must you be earnest toward his cure, not toward satisfying your anger and hurt feelings. If you appeared too weak when you were alone, maybe with the help of others you may become stronger. This effort may occur many times. If he persists in being stubborn, then take it to the church.

Si no te hace caso, y si se enciende su coraje tenazmente, llama a tu lado a alguien mas, o hasta dos otros, para que dos testigos corroboren lo que se dice. Entre más vergonzoso y audaz se ponga, más tienes tu que ser diligente por su curación. No es para satisfacer tu coraje y tus sentidos lastimados. Si te apareces muy débil cuando estas solo, quizás con la ayuda de otros puedas ser más fuerte. Este esfuerzo puede ocurrir muchas veces. Si él persiste en ser terco, entonces llévalo a la iglesia.

St. Augustine (Sermon 82.7) observes that if you fail to speak to your brother alone, you are worse than he is. He has done someone harm, and by so doing has inflicted himself with a grievous wound. Will you then completely disregard your brother’s wound? Will you simply watch him stumble and fall down? If you disregard his condition, you are worse in your silence than he in his abuse. So there is a time to be silent, and there is a time to speak.

San Agustín (Sermón 82.7) observa que si tu dejas de hablar con tu hermano a solas, eres peor que él. Él ha hecho mal a alguien, y por eso se ha castigado a sí mismo con una llaga grave. ¿Vas a ignorar completamente la llaga de tu hermano? ¿Vas simplemente a verlo tropezarse y caer? Si no le pones atención a su condición, eres peor en tu silencio que él en su abuso. De manera que hay tiempo para estar silencio, y hay tiempo para hablar.

I suggest you pray over it first, process in your heart what you are going to say, and when the time is right, then act. Do not say rash things that will only make things worse. Be discreet; choose your words wisely, carefully. Remember that a word can give life, but it can also give death (Proverbs 18:21).

Yo sugiero que te pongas primeramente en oración. Pasa por tu corazón lo que vas a decir, y cuando sea apropiado, entonces actúa. No digas cosas arrebatadas, que solo lo haría todo peor. Sed discreto. Escoge tus palabras sabiamente, cuidadosamente. Recuerda que una palabra puede dar vida, o muerte (Proverbios 18:21).

St. Augustine (Sermon 82.7) adds that if he still refuses to listen, as the Lords says: ‘take one or two others along with you, that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, take it to the church. If he still refuses to listen, then let him be as a Gentile and a tax collector’. “Don’t consider him now in the number of your brethren. But not even then is his salvation to be neglected. For even the heathen, that is, the Gentiles and the pagans, we do not consider in the number of our brothers, yet we constantly pray for their salvation”.

San Agustín (Sermón 82.7) por añadidura dice que si tu hermano todavía se rehúsa a escuchar, como dijo el Señor: ‘toma a uno o a dos otros contigo, para que cualquiera palabra sea confirmada por la evidencia de dos o tres testigos. Saint Jerome (Commentary on Matthew 3.18.15.17), has another point of view. He holds that if our brother has sinned against us and damaged us in anything, we have the power of dismissing it, in fact the obligation to do so, since we are commanded to forgive our debtors their debts. But if anyone sin against God, it is not in our control. He cites the scriptures (1 Samuel 2.25) that says “If a man has sinned against a man, the priest will pray for him, but if he sins against God, who will speak for him?”

San Jerónimo (Comentario Acerca de Mateo 3.18.15.17), tiene otro punto de vista. Dice que si nuestro hermano ha pecado contra nosotros y nos ha lastimado en cualquier cosa tenemos el poder de olvidarlo. En verdad tenemos la obligación para hacerlo, siendo que somos ordenados a perdonar las deudas de los que nos deben. Pero si alguien esta contra Dios, esto es fuera de nuestro control. Cita las escritura (1 Samuel 2:25) que dice “Si un hombre ha pecado contra un hombre, el sacerdote rezara por él, pero si peca contra Dios, ¿quien va a rezar por él?”

But we, on the contrary, are lenient over a sin against God but act out our hatred when we ourselves are insulted. Yet we should immediately reprove our brother, if he has once lost his shame and innocence, so that he does not remain in sin. And if he listens, we profit his soul, and through the salvation of another we acquire our own salvation.

Pero nosotros, al contrario somos benignos sobre un pecado contra Dios pero actuamos de nuestro odio cuando nosotros mismos somos insultados. Debemos inmediatamente reprobar a nuestro hermano si ha perdido su vergüenza y inocencia, de manera que ya no permanece en el pecado. As far as the powers of binding and loosing are concerned, St. Augustine notes that the authorization of the church to discipline its members comes from Christ and promises to be binding in heaven. Theodore of Mopsuestia (Fragment 96) observes that the church in heaven and on earth is one. If the church “looses”, (that is, forgives) those who repent, it is exercising the authority God has given it.

St. Paul in (2 Corinthians 2:5-8) touches on this subject. He says: “if any one has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure-not to put it too severely—to you all. For such a one this punishment by the majority is enough; so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him.” He will belong in the heavenly church and be loosed from the bondage of the judgment.

San Pablo (en 2 Corintios 2:5-8) toca este tema. El dice: “Si uno ha ofendido, no me ha ofendido a mi, sino, hasta cierto punto, para no exagerar, a todos ustedes. Origin (Commentary on Matthew14.1) notes that concord occurs in two kinds: first, in agreement of thought, when two minds think the same ideas (as the apostle called it) and have the same thoughts. Second, it occurs in agreement of will, in living similar lives. The reason why we do not achieve our desires and our prayers is our own fault: we do not agree either in our thoughts or in our lives. We need the harmony that comes from God’s music, so that when are gathered in Christ’s name, his word and his wisdom and his power may prevail.

Finally, the most powerful example of the power of the church praying is in Acts of the Apostles chapter 12:3 ff. Herod the King arrested Peter. He seized him, put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison, but the church made earnest prayer for him. An angel of the Lord appeared to him and led him out through all the guards, on to the street. Immediately the angel left him. Peter came to himself and said: “Now I know that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”
