A Proposal to Enhance theEarning Potential of Narikorava
Womenat Ashakulam
The major issues which confront Narikuravas are poverty, illiteracy, diseases and discrimination
There has been discrimination of Narikuravas since ancient times.
On 1996, a social-welfare organization named Narikurava Seva Sangam was formed in order to educate Narikurava children and facilitate them to lead a settled life.
In May 2008, the creation of a Welfare Board for the Narikuravas headed by the Backward Classes Minister was authorized by the State Government.
Narikurava – a Brief Introduction
ANSEP – Asha Kulam Narikurava Skill Enhancement Project is a community service initiative by NFSC and Artserv in the year 2009.
To Enhance their Design Skills and Workmanship
To help them Manage Production and Marketing To help them Market in Retail Stores To expose them to other form of crafts other than jewellery making
About ANSEP
There are about 150 women, out of the population of 300
Most women make beaded chains, anklets & ear rings and sell in and around Vizhupuram, Pondichery, Melmalaiyanur, Salem, Erode and in Pallavaram, Chennai
They are guided and organized into groups by the SHG, Govt of Tamil Nadu and BWDA an NGO
They are divided in to 5 groups of 20 members each Each member contribute from Rs. 60 to 110/- and
deposit it in bank Depending on the need, a person borrows money from
that fund and repay with interest They also avail loan from the bank There is a system in place and women are highly
interested in learning new designs and producing new types of jewellery
They have a fair knowledge of the material sourcing.
Current Scenario
Level 1 – Level one will be divided in to four phases and carried for 6 months, starting from June.
Level 2 – Training in other forms of Crafts like making bags, sandals, arte facts etc.,
