People who sit all day are at as high a risk of back injury as those who stand all day. The key to good ergonomic health is a mix of the two. In an ideal world, you’d work standing up or moving around at least five minutes an hour.

"You can have a great chair, but we don't promote sitting all day," says Wayne Baxter of Herman Miller. "And you can have a great sit-to-stand desk, but we don't promote standing all day. It's the mixture of all the postures that makes the body happy."

Moving Right Along…Is Good For You

When screen, chair, and desktop don’t move, we move our heads to get the viewing distance that feels right. That’s why we’ll contort our bodies in unhealthy ways without thinking and without noticing any resulting discomfort. And that’s why it’s important to take inventory of your body and ask, “Am I hurting anywhere?”

If the answer is yes, you can make adjustments. Drawing the monitor closer to you with the help of a monitor arm might alleviate back pain, for example. But if we never ask the question in the first place, we won’t make the adjustments that can free us from discomfort.

T he Eyes Have It

Back pain costs companies an estimated $7.4 billion a year in workers 40 to 65 years of age. In any given three-month period, more than 25 percent of adults experience low-back pain, and 8 out of 10 workers will experience it sometime during their career. Computer-intensive work is the worst, since it often causes people to hold uncomfortable positions for long stretches of time. While they aren’t a silver bullet, adjustable arm monitors are a reasonably priced solution that can go a long way toward helping people get comfortable at work.

Location: Edificio Feforma 10 Guatemala City Project Area: 6,721.74/ 642 m2 Preject Year: 2012

Nivea's Beiersdorf new corporate headquarters, located in Reforma 10 Building in Guatemala City, is characterized as a dynamic space where the energy flows spontaneously, based on the requirements of Beiserdorf in Germany.

Being a high-impact brand recognized worldwide, the need to migrate to a new space that reflects its corporate culture, leads to a design that would meet their international requirements, both aesthetically and in terms of corporate identity. T hats why they selected Herman Miller products .

Salient features of the project are the provision of common and private areas, meeting point, a sober reception and recreation area .T he color palette is monochromatic, adhered to a concept that varies in the range from black to white, using various shades of gray as an accent. Work areas are open, a current trend that encourages teamwork and interpersonal relationships. However, private spaces were designed to support any event that involves noise-free concentration.

T he café area is a dual-function recreational space in time that is transformed into a training room for larger gatherings, which maximizes space and provides solutions that enhance the efficiency in every aspect.T he recreation zone is a main focus because it encourages a space where collaborators can take a break. Another important aspect is the service and cleaning area, isolated from the rest: does not interrupt the flow in the working points.

Being a project based on guidelines from Beiersdorf in Germany, it was expected that the standards in terms of sustainability, efficiency and safety are strictly high.
