Olatz Gastelu-Iturri Arteche no ocupa cualquier puesto. Es la primera mujer capitán de un ferry de Trasmediterranea. Y sabe bien lo que esto significa: “Me siento algo pionera. Es una satisfacción haber llegado a lo máximo y abrir el camino a otras mujeres”. Hija de un capitán de la Marina Mercante, esta bilbaína ha tenido por primera vez a su cargo el buque Ciudad de Málaga, que cubre el trayecto Algeciras-Tánger Med, “una ruta corta pero exigente”. A los pasajeros no parece llamarles la atención encontrarse con un capitán en femenino, “lo asumen de manera natural, nadie me comenta nada”. Y mucho menos a los compañeros: “Hay muchas mujeres en otros puestos. Aquí soy una más”. Olatz Gastelu-Iturri Arteche’s position is not just like any other. She is the very first female captain in charge of a Trasmediterránea ferry. She knows very well what this means: “Somehow I feel like a pio-neer. I’m very pleased of having made it to the top and being able to break ground for other women to come.” The daughter of a Merchant Navy captain, this woman from Bilbao has been entrusted for the first time with the City of Malaga vessel that covers the Algeciras-Tangier Med section − “a short but very demanding route”. Passengers do not seem surprised at seeing a female captain – “they take it naturally, nobody has ever said anything”. And her colleagues are even less surprised: “There are many women in other positions. I’m just another one here”.
