Just as cars need regular oil changesand tune ups to run smoothly andreliably over time, our equipmentrequires regular inspections and routinemaintenance to ensure that it is running

efficiently, cleanly and safely. About 50 percent of ourworkforce (including contractors) is dedicated tomaintenance activities including the inspection ofpipes, tanks and other equipment, and we invest about$200 million each year on these comprehensive safetysystems.

Regular refinery maintenance is a critical piece of ouroperations because nothing is more important to usthan protecting our workers, our neighbors and theenvironment. This drives everything we do. It’s not justthe right thing to do — it’s our responsibility to thecommunity. When we operate safely, we operatereliably, and that’s critically important to the successof our business.

En la Refinería de Richmond, damos mantenimiento de rutina anuestro equipo para garantizar que funcione de manera segura yconfiable todo el año. Cada tres a cinco años emprendemoslabores de afinación a gran escala en unidades individuales de larefinería. Turnaround ImprovesSafety

At the Richmond Refinery, we conduct routinemaintenance on our equipment to make sure that it’s running safely and reliably year-round.Every three to five years we embark on large-scale tune ups on individual refinery units. This

process, called a turnaround, involves completely shuttingdown the individual refinery unit in order to inspect it andmake improvements over a two- to three-month period.

As the Project Manager, it is my job to replace some keycomponents of the existing plant equipment. The shutdownteam will manage more than 3,000 employees andcontractors who will participate in this year’s turnaround ofthe Fluid Catalytic Cracker (FCC), the unit of the refinery thatprocesses gasoline.

This turnaround will be the largest in Richmond Refineryhistory, lasting about 80 days and requiring nearly 4 years ofplanning and 250,000 man hours to execute successfully.The process utilizes the expertise of more than 15 types ofskilled labor, from engineers and mechanics to boilermakers,pipefitters, electricians and more. We work closely with laborunions to recruit talent, and we always try to hire locally.

We are mindful of the potential impact of our operations onthe community. We strive to ensure that this turnarounddoes not result in odors, flaring or other impacts to thecommunity. However, you might notice big cranes on therefinery’s skyline. The turnaround is an important part ofmaking sure the refinery operates reliably and keeps ouremployees and this community safe.

Training the NextRefinery Employees

As the largest employer in Richmond,Chevron is committed to increasing ourlocal hiring by training our community’sworkforce to become the next generationof refinery employees. As part of that

commitment, Chevron offers two Regional OccupationalPrograms (ROP) through a partnership with the ContraCosta County Office of Education. The Process PlantOperator program prepares students for entry-level jobsoperating refinery equipment, such as heating,lubrication, or refining systems. In 2013, we added asecond course for Industrial Maintenance Mechanics thatprepares students for entry-level maintenance/mechanicjobs, such as a welder/pipefitter, electrician andmachinist.

ROP graduates are encouraged to apply for entry-levelrefinery jobs, after which they will undergo a 30-monthtraining program that prepares them to becomejourneymen of their assigned craft. Different craftsinclude electricians, machinists, pipefitters/boilermakers/welders and instrumentation mechanics.

I began working at Chevron more than 28 years ago andgot my start thanks to ROP. I’ve had a great career atChevron and now have the opportunity to give back tothe program that helped me get my start. I’m proud towatch folks of all backgrounds develop and grow aspeople and professionals.

Tell us about your job at Chevron.I’m an operator in the Hydrotreating Unit, whichmeans that I’m one of the people in charge of makingsure all equipment in my unit is in tip top shape and ina position to run safely and reliably.

What’s your favorite part of your job?I like being around all the heavy equipment. I get tosee and learn so much on the job — it’s unmatched asfar as other places that I’ve worked.

What’s your favorite part about working atChevron?The people I work with. Chevron does a great jobhiring good people and it’s made it easy for me toform bonds with my crew and build camaraderie.

How did you find out about the job at Chevron?I was raised in Richmond, and I’ve always known aboutChevron. My dad has been working here as anoperator for 32 years, and he suggested that I check itout. He encouraged me to enroll in a free program healso went through, ROP, which helps residents learnabout opportunities at the refinery. I enrolled andgraduated from the course before applying for my rolehere.

Tell us about taking ROP — how did it help you growas an employee? ROP was like a college course but it was geared towardhelping residents like me learn about Chevron andunderstand what being an operator is all about. It alsotaught me leadership skills, science and math. Myfavorite part was a field trip to Chevron where we gotto see firsthand what we’d talked about in class.

Did ROP make it easier to get the job at Chevron? Yes. After I graduated ROP, I had to wait for the rightjob to open up. But once it became available, I appliedand went through a series of interviews, a backgroundcheck and a fitness test. Having graduated from ROPwas super helpful not just for Chevron but really forworking at any refinery. I felt really prepared.

Any advice for Richmond residents interested inworking for Chevron?Punctuality is key. Get an alarm clock and learn towake up at the same time every day. It seems like asmall detail, but these things matter.

As a Richmond native, what’s a commonmisperception about Chevron that you want toclarify having worked here? That it’s impossible to get a job at Chevron. Gettinga job here is not unattainable. If I did it, anybody can do it.
