Pastoral Message

God calls by name

Our name is something so important that when God calls, he does it by our name. We are so special that we are not called in a generic or group way, but we are called individually, personally. Our name is given by our parents because they have given us life. When we say our full name, we want to express who we are and where we come from. By saying "I am Gerardo Gomez", I am saying that my parents de-cided to give me that name, and that I belong to the Gomez family. And if I want to be more specific I could include my first name, and my maternal surname to indi-cate more specifically where I come from and who I am. When I arrived in this country, Father Lavan asked me two questions: what is your name? and How do you want us to call you? The first question was easy, I told him my name is 'Manuel Gerardo Gomez Reza'; but the second question was more complicated to answer. Even though I was 26 years old, I was never asked before 'how do you want us to call you'. I answered I have two names and two surnames call me as you wish, or make the best combina-tion out of them. Father Lavan answered I'm going to call you 'Manny', and from that moment on, I've been Manny. There is something interesting and important that each culture contributes to a better understanding of what our name represents. In the Hispanic culture Mom and Dad give you a name, but when you grow up friends or family give you some nickname, or some way to identify you, that they will use for the rest of your life. In the culture of this country also Mom and Dad give you a name at birth, but when you have the use of reason you can say how you want to be called. So, we discover, the name as something that we receive, but also as something that we decided to be, something that we embrace. Something similar happens with our vocation, God calls us by our name and gives us a mission in life, but he re-spects our freedom. It is precisely in that freedom that we can choose to be what God wants from us or something different that may not lead us to happiness. P. Manny

Dios nos llama por nuestro nombre

Nuestro nombre es algo tan importante que cuando Dios llama lo hace por nuestro nombre. Somos tan es-peciales que no somos llamados de una forma genérica o en grupo, sino que somos llamados individualmente. Nuestro nombre es dado por nuestros padres porque ellos nos han dado la vida. Cuando decimos nuestro

nombre completo queremos expresar quienes somos y de dónde venimos. Al decir “soy Gerardo Gomez”, estoy di-ciendo que mis papas decidieron darme ese nombre y que pertenezco a la familia Gomez. Y si quiero ser más especí-fico pudiera incluir mi primer nombre y mi apellido ma-terno para indicar más específicamente de dónde vengo y quien soy yo. Cuando llegue a este país el Padre Lavan me hizo dos pre-guntas: ¿cuál es tu nombre? y ¿Cómo quieres que te llame-mos? La primera pregunta fue fácil, le dije mi nombre es ‘Manuel Gerardo Gomez Reza’; pero la segunda pregunta fue más complicada de responder. A pesar de que yo tenía 26 años, nunca me habían preguntado ‘cómo quieres que te llamemos’. Le respondí tengo dos nombres y dos apelli-dos llámenme como gusten, o hagan la mejor combinación de ellos. El Padre Lavan respondió te voy a llamar ‘Manny’, y a partir de ese momento he sido Manny. Hay algo interesante e importante que cada cultura aporta para un mejor entendimiento de lo que nuestro nombre representa. En la cultura hispana Papa y Mama te dan un nombre, pero cuando creces los amigos o familia te dan algún sobre nombre o alguna forma para identificarte y así te llaman por el resto de tu vida. En la cultura de este país también Papa y Mama te dan un nombre al nacer, pero cuando tienes uso de razón tú puedes decir cómo quieres ser llamado. Encontramos por una parte el nombre como algo que reci-bimos, pero también como algo que decidimos ser. Algo similar sucede con nuestra vocación, Dios nos llama por nuestro nombre y nos da una misión en la vida, pero respeta nuestra libertad. Es precisamente en esa libertad que nosotros podemos elegir ser lo que Dios quiere de no-sotros o algo diferente que quizá no nos lleve a la felicidad. Fr. Manny

Hesed House Team I

We need a stew preparer for the first Saturdays in February, June and October to help feed 150 homeless people in Aurora. Meat and veggies will be supplied. We also need a veggies pre-parer for the first Saturday in June. Anyone interested please contact Dan Kocunik at 630-892-0537. Your assistance is greatly needed.
