Question of the Week

Question for Children: How does the Blessed Virgin Mary help you to follow Jesus? Question for Youth: When have you experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit? Question for Adults: What role does Mary play in your own spirituality? If you were Elizabeth, how would you greet her at your doorway, if she were to arrive there?

“Calling on the Roman Catholic faithful to gaze even more a en vely on mercy so that we may become a more effec ve sign of the Father’s ac on(MV,3), Pope Francis declared an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy to begin on December 8, 2015, the 50th

Anniversary of the Second Va can Council.” We would like to share the 5 page le er from the Bishop concerning the Year of Mercy. Due to the size of the le er, we will share it in a series of excerpts from the le er each week.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Pope Francis has called our Universal Church to celebrate a holy year invi ng us to reflect, pray and put in ac on that which dis nguishes us as a community of bap zed and, at the same me, expresses the ideal to which we aspire: to be “Merciful like the Father.” With this theme the Holy Father invites us to a Jubilee Year of both internal conversion and evangeliza on. We are to look at how we live this ideal of Mercy in our communi es of faith but also how we take it out into society for the li ing up of all God’s people. It is a year to evoke change in the hearts of individuals and communi es but it is also an opportunity to offer an alterna ve of life to a society in need of reconcilia on, unity and peace. The Year of Mercy begins with opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica on December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep on, and closes on November 20, 2016, the Solemnity of Christ the King. Our Diocese, in communion with the whole Church, wants to live with much intensity this calling of Pope Francis and so I write this Pastoral le er to invite all men and women of good will to prepare for a year of grace that brings peace, reconcilia on, mutual help, and healing to all who live in this region.

served you faithfully throughout their lives. We ask this through Christ our
