What a Parade of Words!

Our fourth and fifth graders celebrated their love for words with an all school activity on Friday, October 28th. Each student selected a vocabulary word and then created a costume to portray their chosen word’s meaning. Classes then paraded through the building with the final stop being our school’s stage where each class member was introduced by their teacher. Three guest judges--Mr. Schmelz, Ms. Engerson, and Ms. Fleck--selected a first and second place costume in each class. Winners received restaurant certificates and posters. Students and teachers alike were thrilled with our parent turnout. We had well over 100 parents in attendance! Thank you to all parents and family members who helped with costume design and supported our students’ efforts. Darien’s first vocabulary parade was a tremendous success!

Los alumnos de 4º y 5º grado celebraron su amor por las palabras con una actividad para toda la escuela el viernes 28 de Octubre. Cada estudiante escogió una palabra y creó un disfraz para representar su significado. Las clases desfilaron por la escuela hasta llegar a la parada final, que fue escenario, en donde cada estudiante fue presentado por su maestro. Nuestros 3 jueces -Mr. Schmelz, Ms. Engerson, y Ms. Fleck - seleccionaron al primer y segundo lugar de cada clase. Los ganadores recibieron certificados para restaurantes y pósters. Los estudiantes y maestros estuvieron encantados con la asistencia de los padres. ¡Más de 100 padres asistieron! A message from Mrs. Pickel Wow! This school year is moving along quickly! It’s hard to believe that we are heading into November already! Your child has completed the MAP reading and math assessments. Please be looking for your child’s MAP Student Progress Report to be coming home soon! The first quarter will be ending November 7th. This means report cards will also be coming home with your child. When you get the report card, please review it and sign the envelope and return the envelope with your child to give to his/her teacher. Over the summer, I spent some time reviewing the data of our incoming students. This included reviewing reading scores, math scores, attendance and behavior (majors and minors) data. I was saddened to see that we had nearly 400 ‘majors’ recorded for incoming 4th and 5th graders. A ‘major’ is a behavior referral in which the building administrator is involved in determining the consequences as it is beyond a teacher managed behavior. Our building staff set a School Improvement Plan goal centered around reducing the number of behavior referrals. Our school’s goal is to reduce the overall number of behavior referrals by at least 10%. Our PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) leadership team spent time putting together a long list of activities and events that are used by all staff to reward students for their positive choices throughout the day. These incentives include Darien Dollars and Dousman Dollars (from bus drivers) that students can save for classroom rewards or submit to the school-wide drawings for daily/weekly and quarterly rewards. Students who choose the school-wide drawing have chances to wear a superhero cape for the day or be entered in a quarterly drawing for a chance to play games or win prizes at our all school quarterly PBIS assembly. Other positive reinforcers that staff use are mailing postcards home to families to inform of positive choices observed in school, and Student of the Week certificates that any staff member can give to students. The postcards and certificates are recorded as positives in our student data system. The PBIS leadership team has been reviewing data for behavior and has also decided to implement a School-Wide Reward. In order for ALL students and staff to attend the building wide reward (an afternoon of playing board games, snow games and extra recess outside, or viewing a movie in the gym) we need to keep the number of behavior referrals under 150 for first semester (from September 6th to January 20th). As of the date of this writing, we have recorded 121 positive certificates and postcards sent home and 39 majors. It would appear we are ‘on track’ for students to meet this goal. Please help us by reviewing the behavior expectations with your child. I have included a copy of the building expectations in this newsletter. We will continue to inform you if your child receives a major and update you of our progress toward the school-wide goal monthly. If you wish to donate to the quarterly prizes, please contact me. As a parent of a student in the Delavan-Darien Elementary Schools, you are an automatic member of the Delavan-Darien Elementary Parent Teacher Organization. All parents are invited to attend the next Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 8th at Turtle Creek Elementary School from 5:30-6:30pm. Childcare will be provided for anyone who needs it. We will also have Spanish translators available for the meeting. Enjoy the last of the beautiful fall colors as the weather will be changing soon. Un Mensaje de Mrs. Pickel ¡Wow! ¡Este año está pasando muy rápido! ¡Es muy difícil creer que ya casi es Noviembre! Su hijo/a ha completado sus evaluaciones MAP de matemáticas y lectura. ¡Por favor esté al pendiente del Reporte de Progreso del Estudiante MAP que mandaremos a casa pronto! El primer trimestre finalizara el 7 de Noviembre. Esto significa que enviaremos la boleta de calificaciones con su hijo/a. Cuando usted la reciba, por favor revísela, firme el sobre y devuelva con su hijo para que se lo dé a su maestro/a. Durante el verano, pase un tiempo revisando la información de nuestros estudiantes. Esto incluye sus calificaciones en lectura y matemáticas e información sobre su asistencia y conducta (mayores y menores). Me entristeció ver que tuvimos casi 400 ‘mayores’ entre los alumnos de 4º y 5º. In an effort to ensure the safety of your child as our number one priority,

please review the following procedures regarding transportation. For EC, K4 and K5 bus riders: Supervision is required to get on and off the bus. If an older sibling or adult is not present at the time of bus DROP OFF and the student is brought back to school, the district will follow the same protocol as it would be for documenting a bus write-up. The first infraction will result in a warning. The second through third infractions may result in a three to five day bus suspension. The fourth infraction will result in a three to five day bus suspension and a meeting with the school district’s business manager, the Director of Pupil Services and the appropriate Building Administrators. The fifth infraction will result in immediate and indefinite suspension of bus riding privileges. In addition to being brought back, there could also be a charge of the daily rate for tutoring of $5.00 for one child and $10.00 for more than one child. For all elementary students who are car riders: If an adult fails to pick up their child by the appropriate time and is sent to the office to wait, there could also be a charge of the daily rate for tutoring of $5.00 for one child and $10.00 for more than one child. Staff have set work times and schedules and we cannot ensure we will have adequate supervision for students that are not picked up and/or brought back to school. We are deeply concerned about the health and safety of children in this situation. Please contact the school with any questions.

What is Schema?

Your child has been studying one of six comprehension strategies that improve students’ understanding while reading. This month the focus has been on schema. What is schema? It is any relevant background knowledge, prior knowledge, or just plain experience that students have that they can relate to a story or passage while reading. When students use their schema they are often able to make connections to the text they are reading. This increases their comprehension. Good readers constantly try to make sense out of what they read by seeing how it fits with what they already know. When we help students make those connections before, during, and after they read, we are teaching them a critical strategy to improve their reading comprehension.

How can I help at home?

The next time your child is reading to you or talking about a book they are reading try this:

Remind them of an experience that they have had that is similar to the one they are reading about. (This is a text to self connection)

Ask if they remember the show on TV that talked about……(This is a text to world connection) Say, “The problem in that story seems like the same kind of problem in the book you were reading last

week.” or “Hey when you were reading about the whales they ate the same type of food.” (This is a text to text connection)

Digital Distractions

We all know that having a 1:1 program has downsides to its upsides. One of the negative effects is the distraction they can be to our learners. We can’t just ban their use and put our heads in the sand. This doesn’t help our students learn to use them as tools. Our young learners have not yet mastered how to use technology properly without getting distracted. How many of us have this mastered? I know I have been know to wander from time to time and had to create a method to keep me focused. So, what can we do to help students grow and learn these skills? HERE are a number of resources full of ideas on what we can do to help our learners succeed. Doing nothing is not an option as technology is never going to not be a huge part of our student’s lives.

Transportation Reminder All Darien Students who are taking the shuttle bus to Turtle Creek in the morning must be to Turtle Creek before 8:05 a.m. If students are coming to Turtle Creek by car, they must be dropped off behind the school. For safety reasons, Darien students may never be dropped off in the parking lot to catch the shuttle bus.

School hours are 8:15 AM - 3:15 PM for Darien School. Students who are walking or being dropped off at Darien should arrive no earlier than 8:15 but before 8:30 AM when the child's day in class begins. Parents who are dropping off their students should pull up to the drop off area in the parking lot. Drop offs should not happen at the front entrance. The shuttles will arrive around 8:15. Any student who is eating breakfast at school should enter the building and go to the cafeteria upon arriving. Breakfast will go until 8:30 each day. Students who are walking from school will be dismissed shortly after 3:15. Walkers will leave the north end of the building near the public library. Those students who are being picked up after school will also be dismissed shortly after 3:15 at the doors near the playground. Parents who are picking up their child after school should park in the parking lot and walk to door 3 which is closest to the playground to wait for your child. When the adult supervisor makes visual contact with you, he/she will release your child to you. All other students will be loading the buses to depart Darien at 3:25 to head to Turtle Creek and then home. All students in tutoring must be picked up and dropped off by a parent. Payments for tutoring must be made for a week at a time and in advance of the tutoring services needed. Todos sabemos que el tener un programa 1:1 tiene sus ventajas y desventajas. Uno de los efectos negativos es la distracción que pueden ser para nuestros estudiantes. No podemos prohibir su uso y esconder nuestra cabeza en la arena. Esto no ayuda a nuestros estudiantes a aprender a usarlas como herramientas. Nuestros estudiantes aún no han dominado el uso de la tecnología para aprender sin distraerse. ¿Cuántos de nosotros lo hemos logrado? Yo se que me ha pasado a veces y he tenido que buscar la forma de mantenerme enfocado. ¿Cómo podemos ayudar a nuestros estudiantes? AQUÍ hay algunas ideas de cómo podemos ayudarles a lograrlo. Transportation Procedures

1. Students who ride the bus are expected to take the bus daily. a. All Darien students who are taking the shuttle bus from Turtle Creek in the morning must be to Turtle Creek before 8:05 a.m. b. If students are coming to Turtle Creek by car, they must be dropped off behind Turtle Creek school. For safety reasons, Darien students may never be dropped off in the parking lot to catch the shuttle bus. c. Only students who attend Turtle Creek may be picked up in the Turtle Creek car line. If you also have a student at Darien, you may pick up both students in the car rider area behind Turtle Creek. d. If you do not have a student at Turtle Creek, you may not use the car rider pick up area.

2. Students may have a different pick-up location than drop-off location, but the schedule must be the same each week. Example A: Your student rides the bus to school Monday, Wednesday and Friday from his/her regular “home” bus stop; but rides the bus from his/her Caregiver’s “address” bus stop to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This will be your child’s “to school” bus schedule every week.) Example B: Your student rides the bus from school to his/her home bus stop on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; but rides the bus to his/her Caregiver’s “address” on Friday. This will be your child’s “from school” bus schedule every week.) Example C: You pick up your student from school on Monday, Tuesday , and Wednesday; but your child will ride the bus home on Thursday and Friday. This will be your child’s “from school” bus schedule every week.)

3. Bus changes must be minimized for student safety and security. For this reason we cannot allow transportation schedules that differ each week, alternate weekly, or include transportation schedules that differ “every third Friday” of the month. 4. Any change to your student’s regular school year transportation schedule must be made in writing

three days before you wish the change to take effect. . 5. Exceptions:

Doctor’s or Other Appointment: If you need to pick up your child early from school for a Doctor’s appointment you must send a written, signed, note with your student in the morning, to give to his/her teacher, indicating what time you will be picking up your child from school. If you are authorizing someone else to pick up your child you must indicate the person’s name on the note you provide. You may pick up your student in the school office. Family Emergencies: In the event of a family emergency or when a student is staying with another family for an extended period of time while the student’s parent or guardian is away, the parent or guardian may request, in writing, that the student transportation schedule be changed. Student Illness: If your student is ill, and therefore not riding the bus, please notify the school no later than 8:00 AM. Other: For other situations not included above please call the school for guidance.

6. School Year Transportation schedules may only be changed for special circumstances with authorization from the school Principal. Minimal transportation changes will assist in establishing transportation routines for both the District and our Transportation provider. Establishing these routines provides enhanced safety and security for our students. Any change to your student's regular school year transportation schedule must be made in writing 3 days before you wish the change to take effect. However, you may pick up your child at school anytime a written note is provided as the child arrives to school.

****Severe EMERGENCY situations can be approved by the principal. These must be true emergencies. Failure to follow procedures compromises the health and safety of your child and others too. As a result, failure to follow the procedures will result in a suspension of transportation, for a period of time.

NOTE: Continued changes compromise the safety of children. In September, there were over 200 change requests. This does not provide for a routine and affects all riders and parents because changes affect the bus times and the drop-off times at bus stops. This is the result of parent changes - not the school district nor the bus company.

Si no tiene un estudiante en Turtle Creek, no podrá usar esta fila para recoger a su estudiante. 2. Los estudiantes pueden tener puntos diferentes donde son dejados y recogidos, pero el itinerario debe ser el

mismo cada semana. Ejemplo A: Su estudiante toma el autobús los días Lunes Miércoles y Viernes en la parada de autobús de su

“casa”; pero los días Martes y Jueves toma el autobús en la parada de su cuidador/niñera. Esto debe ser su itinerario “hacia la escuela” cada semana.

Ejemplo B: Su estudiante toma el autobús de la escuela a su casa los Lunes, Martes y Miércoles y Jueves; pero los Viernes toma el autobús de la escuela a la dirección de su cuidador/niñera. Esto debe ser su itinerario “de la escuela a casa” cada semana.

Ejemplo C: Usted recoge a su estudiante en la escuela los Lunes, Martes y Miércoles; pero su estudiante toma el autobús a casa los Jueves y Viernes. Este será su itinerario “de la escuela a casa” cada semana.

3. Los cambios de autobús deben de ser mínimos por la seguridad del estudiante. Por tal razón, no podemos permitir cambios en los itinerarios de transporte cada semana, o cada dos semanas o incluir ajustes en el horario que sean diferentes “cada tercer viernes del mes”. 4. Cualquier cambio permanente que desee realizar a al itinerario de transporte de su estudiante por el resto del año escolar debe ser hecho por escrito 3 días antes de que se pueda efectuar el cambio.. 5. Excepciones: Cita con el Doctor u Otro Tipo de Citas : Si necesita recoger temprano a su estudiante debido a una cita con el doctor, deberá mandar una nota firmada con su estudiante en la mañana, indicando a qué hora va usted a recoger a su estudiante. Si autoriza a alguien mas para recoger a su hijo/a, debe indicar el nombre de dicha persona en la nota. Podrá recoger a su estudiante en la oficina de la escuela. Emergencias familiares: En caso de que haya una emergencia familiar, o que el estudiante se esté quedando con

otra familia por un periodo de tiempo prolongado, mientras los pares o tutores están fuera, los padres o tutores pueden pedir un cambio en el itinerario de transporte.

Enfermedad del alumno: Si su estudiante está enfermo/a y por lo tanto no va a tomar el autobús, favor de notificar a l escuela antes de las 8:00 AM.

Otros: Para cualquier otra situación no mencionada anteriormente favor de contactar a la escuela. 6. El itinerario de transporte del año escolar podrá ser cambiado bajo circunstancias especiales con autorización del Director o Directora de la escuela. Cambios mínimos en el transporte nos ayudarán a establecer una rutina en el transporte tanto para el Distrito Escolar como para la Compañía de Transporte. El establecimiento de estas rutinas proporciona una mayor seguridad y protección para nuestros estudiantes. (Cualquier cambio al itinerario regular de transporte durante el año escolar debe ser realizado por escrito 3 días antes de que el cambio sea efectivo.)

Sin embargo, usted podrá recoger a su estudiante en cualquier momento si se proporciona una nota por escrito cuando el estudiante llegue a la escuela. ***** situaciones de EMERGENCIA extrema pueden ser aprobadas por el Director de la Escuela. Estas deberán ser emergencias. Al no seguir estos procedimientos, usted pone en riesgo el bienestar y la seguridad de su hijo/a y de los demás. Como resultado, si no sigue los procedimientos, se sancionará con la suspensión de los servicios de transporte por un tiempo. NOTA: Los cambios continuos ponen en peligro la seguridad de los estudiantes. En Septiembre tuvimos más de 200 solicitudes de cambio. Esto no ayuda a establecer una rutina y afecta a todos los estudiantes y sus padres ya que el cambio afecta los horarios del autobús y los horarios en las paradas de autobús. Esto es el resultado de los cambios de los padres - no del Distrito Escolar ni de la compañía de autobuses.
