Próximamente, mejoras de faroles en toda la CiudadLa Ciudad ha comprado unos 8,000 faroles de Southern California Edison (SCE). Como los nuevos propietarios de los faroles, la Ciudad actualizará las luces con lámparas de diodos emisores de luz (LED, por sus siglas en inglés) que ahorrarán dinero, usarán menos electricidad mejorarán la calidad de la luz. Citywide Streetlight Improvements Coming SoonThe City has purchased approximately 8,000 streetlights from Southern California Edison (SCE). As the new streetlight owners, the City will be retrofitting the lights with light emitting diode (LED) lamps that will save money, use less electricity, and improve light quality. The move to LED lamps and City ownership of the light poles will also lay a foundation for future technologies to be deployed across Santa Ana.

Santa Ana residents began to see the light improvements in September. The City has contracted with Siemens Industry to execute the conversion work. Only the head lamps are being replaced, not the light poles themselves. The citywide effort is expected to run through the end of 2018.

Way to Go, Santa Ana!The City of Santa Ana recently reported to the state that 67 percent of its waste was diverted from the landfill during 2016. The City of Santa Ana has consistently surpassed the required 50 percent diversion goal and is on the way to the 75 percent goal set for 2020. El concurso juvenil de pósteres de agua 2019 inicia este otoñoEn octubre, la Ciudad de Santa Ana inicia el 4º Concurso juvenil anual de pósteres de agua. El tema de este año, “Proteger nuestra cuenca,” está diseñado para instruir a los alumnos acerca del ciclo del agua y la cuenca de Santa Ana, al igual que para reforzar el compromiso de los alumnos para proteger el ambiente.

El concurso tendrá lugar durante los meses de octubre y noviembre. Los alum-nos de cinco a 18 pueden trabajar en sus pósteres y competir para ganar premios, que van desde certificados de regalo a un Nintendo Switch y iPad. Un ganador del premio mayor y dos finalistas serán seleccionados de cuatro categorías por edad (5 a 8, 9 a 12, 13 a 14 y 15 a 18). Se otorgará un total de 12 premios.

In October, the City of Santa Ana launches the 4th Annual Youth Water Poster Contest. This year’s theme, “Protecting Our Watershed,” is designed to educate students about the water cycle and the Santa Ana watershed, as well as to reinforce students’ commitment to protecting the environment.

The contest will be held during October and November. Students ages five to 18 can work on their posters and compete to win prizes, ranging from gift

certificates to a Nintendo Switch and iPad. One grand-prize winner and two finalists will be selected from four age categories (5-8, 9-12, 13-14, and 15-18). A total of 12 prizes will be awarded.

Santa Ana schools will be promoting the contest, making worksheets and contest rules available. You can also visit SantaAnaWater.org/contest for contest rules, forms, and all the information you need to have your children participate and let their creativity shine!

2019 Youth Water Poster Contest Kicks Off This Fall

Cuộc thi sẽ diễn ra trong tháng Mười và tháng Mười Một. To maximize the benefit of street sweeping services, when your trash and recycling collection day falls on a street sweeping day, your carts should be placed on the curb or in your driveway, not in the street. Cart handles should always face your house.

Each day, trees take in water through their roots and then give off that moisture through their leaves. The City Parkway trees and trees on your property have developed extensive root systems, including deep tap roots, which allow them to find water even in times of drought. These trees can go through a few gallons of water in a single day, meaning that over time, they will become increasingly thirsty and weak if no water is available.

Watering Your Trees

During Hot Weather

Tips for Watering Trees

• Water in the early morning or evening. Watering during the hottest part of the day causes water to evaporate before it gets where it needs to go.

• Avoid wetting foliage when watering. Each water droplet can act as a tiny lens, intensifying the sunlight and burning the leaves.

• Don’t overwater. Immature trees still have roots in a tight ball, and by overwatering you risk drowning the plant. Instead, it’s ideal to provide water in a slow drip every four or five days. There are hose attachments that provide this kind of slow watering and work well with a hose timer.

• Avoid watering trees right at the trunk. Instead always place your hose, sprinkler or other irrigation at the dripline, which is along the outer edge of the tree branches.

• Water trees and shrubs slowly. You want to get the soil wet about 6 inches below the surface, so small amounts of water applied over time are better than a lot of water all at once. Sprinklers and other above-ground solutions don’t work as well because water evaporates or runs off rather than sinking in deeply.

California’s mandatory commercial recycling law, Assembly Bill 341 (AB 341), requires all businesses and multi-family dwellings (five or more units) to have recycling services on or before July 1, 2012. The City is required to provide education and assistance to owners, property managers and businesses to implement recycling programs to meet this mandate. EcoNomics, Inc., a recycling services consultant, will assist with free on-site technical assistance to help your business or multi-family property comply with AB 341. This hands-on site work has proven to be the best way to implement sustainable and cost-effective recycling programs.

Recycling Holiday Greenery

In Santa Ana, Christmas trees will be picked up at curbside for recycling from December 26, 2018, through January 18, 2019. Trees will be picked up on your regular collection day by a different truck. Place the tree at the curb no earlier than noon on the day before your regularly scheduled collection. There is no extra charge for holiday tree collection during this special collection period.

When you set your tree at the curb, it should be bare. Please remove all decorations, ornaments, lights, garland and tinsel, as well as the stand. If your tree is more than 6 feet tall, cut it in half before placing it at the curb.

After the special collection period, cut up your tree and place the pieces into your green yard waste cart. Be sure that the lid on the cart will close.

Live wreaths and greenery can also go into your green yard waste container. As with your tree, please remove all decorations, ribbons, lights, nails and wire.

Safe Disposal of Used Medical Sharps

Many people treat medical conditions at home with needles, syringes and lancets, commonly referred to as “sharps.” Under state law, sharps waste cannot go into trash or recycling containers but must be handled as medical waste. Residents of Santa Ana can pick up a free, convenient and easy-to-use Sharps Disposal by Mail Kit. Once the container is filled with used sharps, residents simply mail it back in the postage-paid mailing box. You can receive up to three kits per year at no charge.

Generally speaking, the only people authorized to place material into or remove material from a trash or recycling container are the resident and the contracted hauler, Waste Management. Having unauthorized people rummaging through trash containers is dangerous. Whether this occurs in the public right-of-way or on private property, it is considered scavenging.

Like illegal dumping, scavenging is a crime, and it is taken very seriously by the City of Santa Ana. Every year, scav-engers steal recyclables worth thousands of dollars from the City’s curbside con-tainers, reducing the cost-effectiveness of the program. Plus, scavengers often leave unwanted items and litter on the ground surrounding containers.

If you see someone scavenging, here is what you should do:

• For your safety, do not confront the scavenger.

• Write down a description of the person and the vehicle, including license plate number, if possible. If you can discretely take a photo from your phone, please do so.

• To report scavenging, call the Community Preservation Division at 714-667-2780 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. After hours, the Santa Ana Police Department handles all of the calls. Please call the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 714-834-4211.

Trash and Recycling Carts Should Not Be Used to Reserve ParkingParking can sometimes be a challenge in neighborhoods. As a result, we have seen an increase in complaints that residents are using their trash and recycling carts to reserve on-street parking.

Trash cans are only allowed to be on the street between the hours of 4 p.m. the day before trash collection and midnight on the day of collection. At all other times, trash carts must be stored out of public view in accordance with Santa Ana Municipal Code. Administrative citations will be issued for violations, with a $100 citation for the first violation, followed by a $500 citation for the second violation, and a $1,000 citation for the third violation and every violation thereafter. Ultimately, a continuing violation can result in a referral to our City Attorney’s office for the filing of a criminal complaint.

Recycle Right… or it may cost youAlmost half of items placed in recycling containers are contaminating clean recyclable material. In order for the City of Santa Ana to comply with State mandates and increase recycling, we need to clean up what goes in the recycling cart. Have you ever heard the saying, “One bad apple spoils the bunch”? The same is true for recycling, where one non-recyclable item can spoil an entire batch of otherwise good materials.

It may seem like such a small detail — a wrong item in the recycling

bin — but it represents a global problem that’s preventing thousands of tons of recyclables from ever seeing a second life. One easy way to avoid contaminating recyclable material is to never put wet or food-soiled items in the recycling container.

The City has established a contamination penalty in an effort to remind residents to Recycle Right and keep contamination out of the recycling cart. The first and second time contamination is identified within

your recycling cart, a courtesy notice approved by the City will be left that identifies the contamination. On the third and every other instance afterwards, a contamination penalty of $10 may be assessed by the City on your next trash bill.

Nos reúne como una comunidad con un interés en común: proteger nuestros recursos naturales de ser contaminados.La Cuenca de Santa Ana Vivimos en la Cuenca del Río de Santa Ana, la mayor cuenca del Sur de California que cubre unas 3,000 millas cuadradas de montañas, estribaciones y valles. Tiene 50 riachuelos, arroyos y ríos llamados “tributarios.” La principal vía fluvial es el Río de Santa Ana y el mayor tributario en el Condado de Orange es el Riachuelo Santiago. Protecting Our WatershedOur watershed is something we all share in common, regardless of who we are and what we do. It brings us together as a community with a common interest: protecting our natural resources from pollution.The Santa Ana River WatershedWe live in the Santa Ana River Watershed, Southern California’s largest watershed covering nearly 3,000 square miles of mountains, foothills and valleys. It has 50 creeks, streams and rivers called “tributaries.” The main waterway is the Santa Ana River and the largest tributary within Orange County is Santiago Creek. Our watershed also includes all the water that is stored underground in aquifers.Our Actions Make a DifferenceBecause water flow is interconnected, what we do on the land affects the quality of our water for everyone else and can have a big impact on our natural systems, including the plants, animals and fish that depend on them. Trash, debris and chemicals found on the ground can easily be washed into local storm drains when it rains, carrying pollution to our creeks, streams and eventually the ocean without any filtering. That’s why it’s important to do our part to prevent pollution. Here’s what you can do to help:

1. Don’t litter. Recycle what you can and throw the rest in the trash.2. Take used motor oil and old paint to a recycling center.3. Use a broom to sweep instead of hosing off sidewalks and driveways. This will help

prevent ocean pollution and save water.4. Never use fertilizer and pesticides before rain. It can wash harmful chemicals into

storm drains that lead directly to the ocean. 5. Pick up after your pets and throw the waste into the trash.6. Volunteer to help clean up your local watershed.

Recycling programs must improve to meet marketplace challengesYou might have seen recycling in the news lately. Across the country, the demand for recyclables has dwindled because China is no longer taking many materials from the U.S. For California, China has been the primary destination for our recycling, with container ships carrying recyclable paper and plastic to China and bringing newly manufactured products back. China’s new policy, referred to as the “National Sword,” has disrupted markets nationwide. With an oversupply, factories can be very choosy about the articles they accept. To face today’s challenging recycling markets, we all need to be recycling better, keeping recyclables clean and contaminant-free.
