Dear Friends in Christ,

On behalf of our clergy, staff and the nearly 5,000 families who call

Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church home, welcome. We are

thankful you have chosen our parish and have picked up a Welcome

Packet. We trust it will offer you a great deal of helpful information

about our parish.

There are many opportunities for involvement in our parish life. Above

all, please know that everything we do as a community comes from our

celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The Mass is truly our summit and

font from which everything flows and to which everything returns. We

hope you will join us weekly around the Table of the Lord.

It is always exciting to see a parish grow and develop as a vibrant

community in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our ministries convey

the good news of Christ and reach out to all who thirst for the truth

revealed in Him. We have social, catechetical and renewing ministries.

Our hope is that you will find a way to express your faith and make the

parish even better by your involvement and participation.

FATHER JAVIER DÍAZ was ordained on June 3rd, 2017. He attended Redemptoris Mater Diocesan Missionary Seminary in Dallas, Texas. Father Javier feels his calling to be a priest was through the mercy of God. As a child, his desperate prayer for God’s help in his life, and the life of his family was answered when his mother and stepfather began their journey of faith through the Neocatechumenal Way. It was through the Neocatechumenal Way, that his family experienced the saving power of God, where he experienced the love of God, and the beginning of his path to the priesthood. Father Javier was born in Morelia, Michoacán, México and is the oldest of four siblings.

Father Javier finds his compass in his favorite Bible verse, Psalm 116: 12-13.

FATHER EUGENE E. AZORJI was ordained on August 23, 1980 after attending Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu, Nigeria where he received his BA in Theology. In 1988, Father completed his PhD of Sacred Theology from Pontifical Urban University in Rome, Italy. He then studied Education, earning his MA at St. John’s University in New York City and his PhD with a Spe-cialty in Counseling in 2000 from the University of Calabar, Nigeria not far from his hometown. Father Eugene was born in Oboama Ezinihitte Mbaise of Imo State in the southeastern area of Nigeria where he grew up with five siblings.

PADRE EUGENE E. AZORJI se ordenó el 23 de agosto de 1980 después de asistir al Seminario Bigard Memo-rial en Enugu, Nigeria en donde recibió su Licenciatura en Teología. En 1988, el Padre Eugenio terminó su Doctorado en Teología Sagrada en la Universidad Pontificia Urbana en Roma, Italia. Posteriormente estudió Educación obteniendo una Maestría en la Universidad de St. John´s en Nueva York y otro Doctorado con especialización en Consejería en el 2000 en Calabar, Nigeria no muy lejos de su ciudad de origen. El Padre Eugenio nació en Oboama Ezinihitte Mbaise en el estado de Imo localizado al sureste de Nigeria en donde creció con cinco hermanos.

PADRE JAVIER DÍAZ se ordenó el 3 de junio del 2017. Asistió al Seminario Misionero Diocesano Redemptoris Mater en Dallas, Texas. El Padre Javier siente que su llamado al sacerdocio fue por misericordia de Dios. Cuando era niño, su oración desesperada a Dios de ayuda, en su vida y la vida de su familia fue respondida cuando su mamá y padrastro comenzaron una jornada de Fe por medio del Camino Neocatecumenal. Fue por medio del Camino Neocatecumenal, que su familia experimentó el poder salvador de Dios, en dónde experimentó el amor de Dios, y fue el principio de su camino hacia el sacerdocio. El Padre Javier nació en Morelia, Michoacán, México y es el mayor de cuatro hermanos.

Se graduó de la Universidad Autónoma de México como Matemático y posteriormente obtuvo su Maestría en Administración del Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México. Juan Jorge contrajo matrimonio con Lorena en 1978 y tiene cuatro hijos. Juan Jorge dice, “Como clero, debemos honrar el mandato de Mateo 28. DEACON ANDREW PAUL TANNER was ordained on June 2, 2018. He is a Managing Director within the Investment Solution Group at Bank of America. Andrew has an MBA from The Ohio State University and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. Andrew is also a Certified Exit Planning Adviser and works with business owners who are facing business succession decisions. Andrew spent two years in seminary during his college years which happens to be where he met his wife, Yoli. They married in 1987 and have four children. Andrew says, "If you ever need or want to talk, just send me a note or find me, I am Andrew, your brother.” Favorite Bible verse - Matthew 19:14 Speaks English, working a lot on Spanish and a little Gaelic

DEACON SID LITTLE was ordained on February 3, 1979 in the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas. He was incardinated in the Diocese of Lubbock, then Dallas. His many responsibilities have included Director of Ministries, Communications and Marriage Preparation. Born into a military family, he lived in many States. Sid married Patricia in 1967 and they have three children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Deacon Sid celebrated his 40th year of ordination in 2019. DEACON GEORGE POLCER was ordained June 10, 2000, the Great Jubilee. He has been an Engineer with Fujitsu since 1985. He grew up in Chicago, Phoenix and Southern California. George married Laurie in 1973 and they have five children and nineteen grandchildren. Deacon George said, “These Bible verses show me the basics for approaching and looking at life, which will gently guide us home with Jesus Christ in Heaven for Eternity.” Favorite Bible verses - Proverbs 3: 5-6, James 1:5, 16:33 Speaks English

DEACON JOSE ANTONIO VÁZQUEZ RANGEL was ordained on June 2, 2018. He is in the profession of building main-tenance. Jose was born in Mexico City, Mexico, which is where he grew up and did his schooling. Jose married Mercedes in 1991 and they have five children. Jose said, “To know that He needs me in His mercy and to know that God is merciful, gives me confidence and allows me to better understand others in their difficulties.” Favorite Bible verse - Luke 15: 20 - 24 Speaks Spanish and English

DEACON JUAN JORGE HERNÁNDEZ was ordained on June 21, 2011. He graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico with a BS as Mathematician and later earned his MA in Administration from the Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology. Juan Jorge married Lorena in 1978 and they have four children. Juan Jorge said, “As clergy, we should honor the Command in Mat-thew 28. DIÁCONO JOSE ANTONIO VÁZQUEZ RANGEL se ordenó el 2 de junio del 2018. Su profesión es mantenimiento de edificios. José nació en la Ciudad de México, en donde creció y efectuó sus estudios. Fundada en 1870, la Iglesia Católica San Miguel Arcángel continúa creciendo en su tradición, su compromiso, pero sobre todo en su fe. Somos una familia compuesta de personas con diferentes condiciones de vida; nadie caminando al mismo ritmo o con el mismo nivel de crecimiento espiritual, pero siendo verdaderamente una misma familia.

Los registros diocesanos indican que Católicos en McKinney fueron servidos desde 1872 a 1874 por los Padres Joseph y Claude Martiniere del Centro Misionero San Pablo en San Pablo, Texas. El Padre Martiniere continuó sirviendo a la parroquia regularmente hasta 1881. Después de su muerte, otros sacerdotes transitorios de San Pablo sirvieron a la pequeña congregación.

El Domingo de Ramos de 1895, el Padre Anthony O’Hara, el primer pastor residente, ofició la Misa en la Casa de la Opera de McKinney con

solamente ocho Católicos presen-tes. El Padre O’Hara recolectó donativos y aseguró suficiente dinero para construir una peque-ña iglesia de madera en los lími-tes de la ciudad. El terreno fue donado por un Protestante de nombre W.C. Thompson del pe-riódico Examiner de McKinney. La iglesia inicialmente fue nom-

brada San Juan, sin embargo en 1906 se cambió a San Miguel. Una iglesia de madera más grande fue construida en 1914. A través de los años, los Católicos de McKinney fueron ministrados por los sacerdotes de varias comunidades del norte de Texas, incluyendo Bonham y Den-ton. De 1911 a 1950, Padres Vicentinos de Dallas sirvieron la misión, muchos montando el tren interurbano de Dallas que inició servicio en 1908. Una pequeña iglesia de ladrillo fue construida en 1960 bajo el Rev. Alphonse Boch. El Obispo Thomas K. Gorman elevó a San Miguel Arcángel a status de parroquia en agosto 18, 1966. Este edificio es ahora conocido como el Salón Santa Rosa.

Nuestra iglesia estilo misión fue dedicada en 2007 y fue construida bajo el liderazgo del Padre Stephen Bierschenk con dinero ahorrado por el Padre Carl Vogel, pastor de 1984 - 2002. Acogiendo nuestra rica diversidad en San Miguel, el Padre Bierschenk comenzó a celebrar Misas en inglés y español. El Padre Bruce Bradley (2008 - 2011) y el Padre Salvador Guzmán (2011 - 2017) continuaron aumentando el hora-

rio bilingüe para las Misas y ministerios que disfrutamos el día de hoy. Mirando hacia el futuro, el Padre Eugene Azorji estableció el Concilio Pastoral Parroquial en el 2017 para trabajar junto al Concilio Financiero en cumplir con su compromiso de reforzar el involucra-miento de los feligreses. Los feligreses de San Miguel Arcángel están agradecidos con nuestros sacerdotes, diáconos y familias por la rica historia de fe, oración, sacrificio y tradición que se refleja en nuestra cultura de hoy.

Founded in 1870, Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church continues to grow in its tradition, its commitment and evermore so in its faith. We are a family made up of people of all walks of life; not one walking at the same pace or level of spiritual growth, but truly one when it comes to being a family.

Diocesan records indicate that Catholics in McKinney were first served from 1872 to 1874 by Fathers Joseph and Claude Martiniere from St. Paul Missionary Center in St. Paul, Texas. Father Martiniere continued

to serve the parish on a fairly regular basis until 1881. After his death, other circuit riders from St. Paul served the small congrega-tion.

On Palm Sunday in 1895, Fr. Anthony O’Hara, the first

resident pastor, celebrated Mass in the McKinney Opera House with just eight Catholics present. Father O’Hara collected donations and secured enough money to build a small frame church on the edge of town. The land was donated by a Protestant named W.C. Thompson of the McKinney Examiner newspaper. The church was first named St. John’s, but in 1906 was changed to St. Michael’s. A larger frame church was built in 1914. Through the years McKinney Catholics were minis-tered to by priests from various North Texas communities including Bonham and Denton. From 1911 until 1950 Vincentian Fathers served the Mission Church, many riding the interurban train from Dallas which began service in 1908. A small brick church was built in 1960 under Rev. Alphonse Boch. Bishop Thomas K. Gorman elevated Saint Michael the Archangel to Parish status on August 18, 1966. This building is known today as St. Rose Hall.

Our Mission style church was dedicated in 2007 and was built under the leadership of Father Stephen Bierschenk with seed money saved by Father Carl Vogel, pastor from 1984 - 2002. Embracing our rich diversity at St. Michael’s, Father Bierschenk began celebrating Mass in both English and Spanish. Father Bruce Bradley (2008 - 2011) and Father Salvador Guzmán (2011 - 2017) continued increasing the dual language schedule for Mass and ministries that we enjoy today. Looking to the future, Father Eugene Azorji established the Parish Pastoral Council in 2017 to work alongside the Finance Council in keeping with his commitment to strengthen parishioner involvement.

MONAGUILLOS Los monaguillos son jóvenes que ya han recibido su Primera Comunión. Son entrenados para servir como asistentes a los sacerdotes no solo durante la Misa si no también para otros servicios litúrgicos. ALTAR SERVERS Altar servers are youth who have received their First Communion. They are trained to serve as attendants to the priest not only during Mass but also during other liturgical services. This ministry is a wonderful opportu-nity for youth to play a vital role during the celebration of the Mass.

MUSIC MINISTRY This ministry contributes to the solemnity and beauty of Masses at our parish. We have adult choirs in English and Spanish as well as children and youth choirs. We welcome your instrumental and vocal gifts. For information contact the Director of Music and Liturgy.

LECTORS Lectors proclaim the Word of God with clarity and conviction. The training includes studying Scripture to effectively communicate the profound meaning of the Word to the congregation and learning how to project one’s voice using the microphone. Becoming a lector requires an interview.

VBS - VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Discover the treasures of your Catholic faith in VBS for the whole family. Elementary school youth enjoy being assisted by older youth volunteers, while parents may sign up to help guide the program. The days are themed around Saints, Virtues and Bible stories. RCIA – RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION ADAPTED FOR CHILDREN Non-baptized youth, ages 7-18, may enroll in our Faith Formation program. This program will help prepare your children for the Sacrament of Baptism. If your child has been baptized in another Christian tradition, this initia-tion process prepares them to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church by celebrating the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation. HOLY HOUR Come experience the loving real presence of Jesus through Eucharistic Adoration. We have an atmosphere of guided meditation. The hour includes Gospel readings and songs of praise. MUSIC CAMP Sometimes church activities come in a treble clef and sing like a bird. Each summer, our Music Camp works with school age children. Elementary kids are grouped by age with teens assisting. WOMEN’S GUILD This dedicated group of women arranges the flowers for the church, cares for the altar linens and vestments of the clergy. They also coordinate funeral receptions. Meetings begin with prayer and Rosary, transitioning to fellowship and fun as they plan their craft and bake sales and other service projects held throughout the year.

JÓVENES ADULTOS PARA CRISTO Their mission is to deliver the good news of Christ to everyone. This group develops responsible leaders who champion peace, justice and charity by being Christlike in our world. Gatherings include topics of great interest.

MOVIMIENTO FAMILIAR CRISTIANO CATÓLICO (MFCC) This course promotes Christian and human values that strengthen couples and integrates all family members. Their goal is to help guide families toward having a more Christ oriented marriage and a happier family life. Families meet bi-weekly during the school year.

GRUPO DE ORACIÓN EMMANUEL This is an evangelization group whose goal is to have an encounter with God, experience His love in their lives and help heal spiritual wounds.

PRAYERS AND SQUARES Every Monday morning a compassionate group of quilters join in making beautiful prayer quilts which are prayed over to bring comfort and healing to parishioners in need. Each unique quilt is a reminder of Christ’s love and healing power. Come quilt with us!

MATACHINES Colorfully costumed dance group who reenact native dances of an indigenous people. They are an integral part of many religious festivi-ties, including the Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

LEGIÓN DE MARIA Este grupo de evangelización lleva a la Virgen Peregrina a los hogares en donde se reza el Rosario por las diferentes necesidades e intencio-nes de las familias. También reza el Rosario para funerales.

PRAYERS AND SQUARES Cada lunes en la mañana un grupo compasivo de costureras se reúnen a elaborar hermosas colchas sobre las cuales se hace oración trayendo confort y sanación a los feligreses que se encuentran en tiempos de dificultad. Cada colcha es un recordatorio del amor de Cristo y Su poder de sanación. ¡Ven a coser con nosotros!

MATACHINES Grupo de bailarines en vestuario colorido que recrean danzas típicas de culturas indígenas. Ellos son una parte integral de muchos festejos religiosos, incluyendo la Novena de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.
