En el universo de los Wakos, Rafael Lanfranco, artista e ilustrador de 4D2 Studio, construye una narrativa alrededor del replanteamiento del arte precolombino peruano con la estética y las reglas del art toy o el juguete de diseño. El concepto rescata lo lúdico y global del toy, las formas y los estilos que vemos en formatos en vinil, como los persona-jes Munnyworld de Kidrobot, del manga y anime japonés, y los combina con las ideas y deidades presentes en la civilización precolombina panandina, los chavines, mochicas, chimús, nascas, entre otras expresiones de la única civilización antigua que alcanzó el desarrollo estatal en el hemisferio sur, dueña de una riquísima y original narrativa. Con los Wakos, Lanfranco recrea sus personajes, sus leyendas, su mundo y los trae al presente, en un Perú que busca hacerse global, reinventarse para encajar, que quiere encontrar la forma de compartir su arte y legado cultural con una propuesta más contemporánea y lúdica.

In Wakos universe, 4D2 Studio artist and illustrator Rafael Lanfranco, creates a narrative around the redefinition of Pre-Columbian art with the aesthetics and principles of the art toy. The concept recreates the toy’s playfulness and universal condition, as well as the shapes and styles that we see in vinyl formats like Kidrobot’s “Munnyworld" characters, the Japanese manga and anime, so as to combine it with the ideas and deities of the pre-Columbian Pan-Andean civilization. This ancient civilization: Chavín, Mochica, Chimu, Nazca, among others, was the only ancient civilization that reached the degree of development of a state in the southern hemisphere, an area which possessed a rich and original narrative. With Wakos, Lanfranco recreates their characters, their legends, their world and brings them back to the present time, in Peru, a country seeking to become global, to reinvent itself to fit in and to find a way to share its art and cultural heritage through a more playful and contemporary approach.

BIO DEL ARTISTA

Rafael Lanfranco es socio y fundador de 4D2 Studio, un estudio de arte e ilustración peruano que integra junto con Alonso Saavedra. Rafael es artista autodidacta con talleres de dibujo, pintura y escultura en Lima en la Escuela de Artes Corriente Alterna. Tiene también una Maestría en Ciencias de la Comunicación de la Universidad de Boston (2005-2006), que obtuvo con una beca Fulbright, así como el título de abogado otorgado por la Universidad Católica del Perú (1994-2000). Ha expuesto junto con Alonso Saavedra en la sala del Icpna en San Miguel, Lima, una retrospectiva del trabajo de 4D2 Studio, entre setiembre y octubre de 2013, y en la Galería Nacional de Sao Paulo, Brasil, en octubre de 2014, junto con otros seis diseñadores peruanos en una muestra dedicada al diseño del Perú. En octubre de 2014 realizó su primera muestra individual, Wako.world I, en la galería Indigo en Lima. Sus piezas se exponen en galerías de Lima, Madrid y Sao Paolo.

ARTIST BIO

Rafael Lanfranco is a partner and founder of 4D2 Studio, a Peruvian art and illustration studio that he runs along with Alonso Saavedra. Rafael is a self-taught artist, though has participated in several drawing, painting and sculpture workshops at Corriente Alterna Art School in Lima. He also holds a Master of Science in Communication from Boston University, (2005-2006), thanks to his Fulbright scholarship, and a Law degree from the Catholic University of Peru (1994-2000). He has exhibited alongside Alonso Saavedra at the ICPNA Art Gallery in San Miguel, Lima, a retrospective of the 4D2 Studio work between Septem-ber and October 2013, and at the National Gallery of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in October 2014, with other six Peruvian designers in an exhibition dedicated to Peruvian design. In October 2014 he had his first solo show, WAKO.World I at Indigo Gallery in Lima. His pieces are shown in galleries Lima, Madrid and Sao Paulo.
