Early Years ● He was born in Pontevedra, in Praza do Peirao, the 28th of

October, 1906.

● His parents were Xose María Filgueira Martínez, a doctor,

and Araceli Valverde Yaquero (see picture)

● He studied a degree in Law, Philosophy, Letters (reaching the

doctorate’s degree) and Psychology in the universities of

Santiago de Compostela and Zaragoza.

Adulthood ● In 1923 he was part of the founders of the Galician’s studies

seminary, in were he runed the History of Literatures section.

● Since that moment until he´s death, wich was in Pontevedra

1996, he mantain a big activity in the cultural intiatives

promotion.

● He started working as a teacher in many centres and in 1927

he was one of the founder of the Museum of Pontevedra.

Adulthood ● From 1927 to 1976 he was the director of the Padre Sarmiento

Institute of Galician Studies.

● Being a very influential Galician intellectual, he was a membber

of the Galician Royal Academy and the Royal Academy of

history, Counsellor of Culture in Xunta de Galicia and the Council

of Galician Culture from 1990 and until his death.

Works in Galician He wrote different types of works:

● Essays like “Pontevedra no Camiño

das Peregrinacións”(1993) and “Da épica

na Galicia medieval”(1973)

● Narrative books: His first book was

“Os nenos”(1925). He also wrote

“O vigairo”(1927) and “Quintana viva”.

● Literature for children: “Agromar”(1936)

● Poetry like “6 canciones de mar”(1941)

● Editions, some of them are:

“Cancioneiriño novo de Compostela”(1969) and

“Alfonso X e Galicia e unha escolma de cantigas”(1978)

● A dictionary of popular vacabulary galician-spanish.

Galician Literature Day 2015

Since 1963, each Galician Literature Day has

been dedicated to a different writer in the

Galician language. Only writers who have been

dead for at least ten years are eligible, and the

choice is made by the Real Academia Galega

(Royal Galician Academy). This year Filgueira

Valverde has been the chosen writer.
