Introduction
In this unit, you’re going to practise and develop your listening around the topic of health and
fitness. You’ll hear people describing how fit they are and what exercise they do.
Essential Vocabulary
Before we listen, there’s one important word you need to know. You probably already know the
meaning of fit , which means your body is healthy and you exercise a lot, but there is another
meaning of this word. In British slang, fit also means to be good looking and have good body! You’ll
hear that use of the word in the interviews. To be fit .
Listening Task 1
You’re going to hear four very short interviews. The speakers are Stuart, Jon, Tom and Niall.
• As you listen try to hear who does the most exercise and who does the least exercise.
KATIE: Stuart, are you fit?
STUART: Good looking, or healthy?
KATIE: Healthy. (laughter)
STUART: Erm...reasonably so, reasonably so yeah. I want to be fitter though.
KATIE: And so what’s your...what exercise do you do? Do you have a fitness routine?
STUART: Err...well, I actually have a knee problem, which is why I’m not as fit as I’d like to be. But I
ride my bike around the city...erm...constantly really, so I do quite a few kilometres a day, and I’m
practising yoga three times a week at the moment. So that’s whipping me back into shape, at least
I hope. It feels like it is anyway.

KATIE: Jon. Are you fit?
JON: No. I’m not fit. I’m very, swiftly approaching forty, and...I have been fit in the past, but I findthat, I really, to be honest with myself, can’t be bothered after I’ve been to work. However, before I

hit forty, I do plan to be, fitter. And quit smoking...and...not drink so much. I do eat healthily, but I
need to exercise an awful lot more, because I generally don’t move from the sofa, unless I’m going
out, to do something.

KATIE: Tom, do you think you are fit?
TOM: Yes. Extremely fit.
KATIE: Oooh. (laughter) Get you.
TOM: No, I...I don’t actually, I’ve got various injuries at the moment, erm, but I’m a lot fitter now
than I was.
KATIE: So what’s your exercise routine?
TOM: Well, I was swimming...a mile...which is like one point six kilometres eve...four or five days a
week, in the morning, erm, and I’ve swum a lot for about ten years, err, but recently I’ve had a
shoulder injur...injury and so I’ve had to stop swimming. So now I’m going running and...I walk quite
a lot, I’m doing some yoga, I started...erm, yeah basically, so it’s yoga, swimming, cycling and
Spinning as well. I go Spinning, which is, quite aggressive.

KATIE: OK, this is Katie, and I’m talking to Niall in his back garden. Niall, are you fit?
NIALL: No. (laughter) Not at all, erm, I don’t think I’ve ever been fit in me life. I’ve always been a
little bit chubby...No, not at all, I couldn’t even run a mile.
KATIE: So, do you have any kind of exercise routine?
NIALL: I walk the dog.
KATIE: How far, how often?
NIALL: I walk him, at least once a day. On a night time it’ll be a minimum of twenty minutes, amaximum of an hour, and on a Saturday and Sunday he’ll get at least an hour in the morning and
half an hour at night.
KATIE: So you do actually do quite a bit of exercise.
NIALL: But it doesn’t make any difference. (laughter) It probably stops me putting on weight, it
doesn’t help me lose weight.
KATIE: Fair enough.

Listening Task 1 – Answers
So who do you think does the most exercise? Well, Tom and Stuart both do exercise. Tom probably
does a bit more than Stuart.
And who does the least? Jon.
Listening Task 2
Now you’re going to hear Amanda on the same topic. Answer these two questions;
• Has Amanda changed how she exercises?

Does she feel better?
KATIE: Amanda, do you think you’re fit?
AMANDA: (laughter) Erm, I’m thinking of the...the London term for fit . (laughter) Erm, sort
of...erm...OK...I think I feel, healthier than I ever have done, now...without making such a
concerted1 effort
2 to be so, if that makes sense. And erm, I’ve always loved sport, and I’ve always
been very...keen on...keeping fit, in the strict sense of the word, of going to the gym and running
and...watching what I eat, etc. etc...just because I want to feel healthy. But, erm, I’ve made a move
in the last three or four years to...to stopping the hectic3 running to the gym every single day
and...sweating my guts out and I’ve started doing yoga and...I...as I say, I think I...I don’t have as
many colds and, flus and, I don’t feel ill, I feel like I’ve got more energy...and, I don’t watch what I
eat any more, and that kind of thing, so I think it’s...I’ve moved towards feeling...healthier...without
doing the, strict textbook idea of, what you need to do to be fit. And also, moving away from
aesthetics4
, as in a number, on a scales, or erm...how many push ups you can do, if you want to
look at it that way in strength...to an overall feeling...erm...yeah, which in...in...in a yoga...sense,
would be combining strength, resistance, flexibility...and, erm, being more concentrated in certain
moments, being more focused...I can talk about this forever (laughter). So yes, I would...I would say
that I feel, that I am healthier, I don’t like the word fit. I am healthy, yes. (laughter)
Listening Task 2 - Answers
Has Amanda changed how she exercises? Yes. She goes to the gym less and now she does a lot of
yoga.

Listening Task 3
Now you’re going to hear a longer interview with Emma. As you listen, decide if these statements
are true or false.
• Emma has already run three marathons.
• She was very happy with the time of her first marathon.
KATIE: OK, I’m sitting in, erm, Emma’s, my friend Emma’s spare bedroom, and erm, the reason I’ve
chosen Emma, to talk about this...topic with, is that she’s, what I would call, a real Mrs Fit .
EMMA: (laughter)
KATIE: So do you think of yourself as fit Emma?
EMMA: Erm...I wouldn’t say that I do, but I suppose if you look at the evidence and the amount of
exercise that I do, then...yes I am, yeah.
KATIE: And, erm...what are you doing in eleven week’s time?
EMMA: Erm, I’ll be running, the Edinburgh marathon. Erm, and it will be my third official
marathon, erm...
KATIE: Good God.
EMMA: (laughter) Erm so I’ve previously run, err, last year I ran Windermere marathon, and the
year before that I run...I ran Brighton marathon, and I’ve also done some marathon length runs,
including running the Yorkshire Three Peaks.
KATIE: Which, for those of you who don’t know, is like running a marathon, but...sort of up and
down mountains.
EMMA: Yep. Up...up and down three mountains. Yeah, twenty six miles.
KATIE: Ugghh. So why, why, why marathons?
EMMA: I don’t know. Erm, I only started running, three years ago, and if you’d told me then that I
would eventually end up running marathons, I would have thought you were absolutely mad. Erm,
but I suppose once you start running, and you get into it, it’s one of the ultimate goals, and...
KATIE: Uggh.

EMMA: ...when you’re a runner and you talk to people, one of the first questions they ask you is,
are you going to run a marathon? And I think, you run your first marathon, erm, thinking, this is
something I‘ll only do once, in my life...
KATIE: Yeah.
EMMA: ...and I can tick 5
KATIE: It...it sounds like a friend of mine describing...childbirth, when she had children...
it off , erm, and, the minute you finish the marathon, you think, Oh my
God, I’m never ever doing that again. But then...I don’t know, after a day or so...(laughter)
EMMA: Mmm.
KATIE: (laughter)
EMMA: Yeah.
KATIE: ...she said it was just...just God awfully painful...
EMMA: Yep.
KATIE: ...but as soon as the pain went away...I want another one.
EMMA: Yeah, I think that could be it, and I think it’s human nature to always want to improve, so
you always think, Oh well, I could run it a bit faster next time, or, I’d know what I was doing, so I
could improve my training, or...yeah, something like that.
KATIE: A friend of mine did her first ma...it’ll probably be the only one she’ll ever do, but she did
her first marathon, and, erm, she was the second last person in the whole thing...
EMMA: Awww.
KATIE: ...and she walked most of it, and she didn’t realise...she thought that because she’d walked
it...it didn’t count...
EMMA: Awww.
KATIE: And so she was, she was in tears when she crossed the line, and she said well I haven’t done
it, I haven’t done it, and people said you have done it, you’ve gone twenty six miles. Yes, but I didn’t
run.
EMMA: Yeah, awww.
KATIE: So then when she found out that...
EMMA: Yeah.
KATIE: ...it still counts...

EMMA: Yeah. I...I mean I think most people do have to stop and walk...erm, at some point and
people take hours and hours and hours to do them...erm...so yeah, I mean it’s incredible, the...the
variance in the length of time that there is that people do them in so...
KATIE: Yeah. And have...has your time improved as you’ve done them?
EMMA: Well, my first one, I did in three hours fifty-eight minutes, which was amazing (whistle) for
a first marathon.
KATIE: That is amazing.
EMMA: It was really, really good, and I just couldn’t believe I got under four hours. My second
marathon, erm, in Windermere was really hilly...
KATIE: Mmm.
EMMA: ...erm, so I...I didn’t know what target to set myself, but secretly, I really wanted to still do
it in under four hours and I was quite upset6
KATIE: Yeah, Windermere is, again for people who don’t know, is in the Lake District...
that it took me four hours fifteen minutes. But in
actual fact that’s still a really good time.
EMMA: Mmm.
KATIE: ...so, and it’s...it’s just full of hills isn’t it?
EMMA: Yeah.
KATIE: I mean, there’s no flat areas at all.
EMMA: No...it really was up and down and up and down. Erm...so, although, that...you know my
second marathon took me longer than the first one, the second marathon was massively hilly, so...I
do think my running’s improved, over the last three years and, yeah maybe I’ll beat...I’ll beat three-
fifty-eight, when I do Edinburgh in eleven weeks time.
KATIE: So, you’re running another marathon in eleven weeks time.
EMMA: Mmm hmm.
KATIE: What...how often are you, what are you doing in your training programme at the moment?
How are you preparing?
EMMA: Erm, well it’s quite ad hoc. I’m not following a sort of, a very strict training plan, because a
lot of...lot of runners, or a lot of first time marathon runners will download programmes or get
books that give them very strict, lists of things to do, but erm, as a general rule, I run three times a
week, erm, and I generally, run about twenty miles a week. Erm, and so what I’ve done, is I’ve
introduced one extra run, so I’m now running four times a week. Erm, and I’m just building up my
long run, I’ll do one long run at the weekend, and try and build it up by about a mile a week. So...for

example last weekend I did fourteen and a half miles on Saturday. And erm, this weekend, I’m
probably going to do...about sixteen miles.
KATIE: Oh God, it makes me tired just thinking about it. (laughter)
EMMA: Yeah, so erm, I do other things as well, erm, for example every Wednesday I go to a Pilates
class, it’s meant to be really good for runners, because it’s meant to build up your core strength and
erm, be really good for all you aches and pains. Erm, and I also go to a Spinning class, every
Monday.
KATIE: Oh God, Spinning is hell.
EMMA: Yeah, so Spinning’s like indoor cycling, erm and if you’ve ever been to gym, you’ve
probably looked into a room and seen a bunch of, people on exercise bikes in a semi circle, around
a...
KATIE: Sweating.
EMMA: ...yeah, around a trainer, screaming at them to go faster. Erm, so it’s very intense, cardio
activity. Mmm.
KATIE: So I think we can safely say that you are...Mrs Fit . And we’re going to have to stop there,
because I’m feeling very tired now.
Emma: OK.
(laughter)
Listening Task 3 – Answers
True or false?
Emma has already run three marathons. False – the one in Edinburgh will be her third. She hasn’t
run it yet.
She was very happy with the time of her first marathon. True.

MARK: I’ve got no idea...I...don’t extend7 myself sufficiently, physically to discover that I’m unfit.
So...I don’t know. I suppose I am because apart, I mean I walk a lot, I walk quickly...I rarely take
public transport. I actually want to get one of those little things on your wrist

, to work out actuallyhow much I walk every day. It’s a fair amount, around Barcelona, going from office to office, to
restaurant, to office to everywhere. So...apart from that I don’t actually do any exercise, so...I never
