TEXT 1: Classical Music
The word Classical has strong connotations, conjuring up the art and philosophy ofAncient Greece and Rome along with their ideals of
balance, proportion and disciplined expression. The lateBaroque stylewaspolyphonically complex and melodically ornate. The composers of
the early Classical period changed direction, writing music that was muchsimpler intexture.It is in some ways ironic that two of J.S. Bach's
Children, Carl Philipp Emanuel (C.P.E.) and Johann Christian (J.C.), were
among the leaders of this new artistic movement. Their father had been
the greatest master of the highBaroque style, and it was his children who
made that style obsolete.

were developed to accommodate the transformation.Sonata form is by
far the most important of theseforms,and one that continued to evolve
throughout the Classical period. Although Baroque composers also wrote
pieces called sonatas, the Classical sonata was quite different.The essence of the Classicalsonata is conflict. A highly simplified example
of such a conflict might be between two themes of contrasting character.
This contrast would be intensified during the course of the sonata, then
finally resolved. In some ways, there is a resemblance to the skeleton of a
play: we meet characters, a conflict is developed and finally a resolution
reached. Sonata form allowed composers to give pureinstrumental music
a recognizable dramatic shape. Every majorinstrumental form of the
Classical era, including the string quartet,symphony andconcerto was
molded on the dramatic structure of thesonata.
One of the most important developments of the Classical period is the
growth of the public concert. Although the aristocracy would continue to
play a significant role in musical life, it was now possible forcomposers to
survive without being the employee of one person or family. This also
meant that concerts were no longer limited to palace drawing rooms.
Composers started organizing concerts featuring their own music, and
often attracted large audiences. The increasing popularity of the public
concert had a strong impact on the growth of theorchestra.Althoughchamber music and solo works were played in the home or other intimate
settings,orchestral concerts seemed to be naturally designed for big
public spaces. As a result, symphonic music (includingopera and
oratorio) became more extroverted in character. Composers gradually
expanded the size of theorchestra to accommodate this expanded
musical vision.

stage reserved for theGreek chorus.The orchestra grew by accretion throughoutthe 18th and 19th centuries, but changed very little in composition during thecourse of the 20th century.
A smaller-sized orchestra for this time period (of about fifty players or fewer) iscalled a chamber orchestra. A full-size orchestra (about 100 players) may
sometimes be called a "symphony orchestra" or "philharmonic orchestra";these modifiers do not necessarily indicate any strict difference in eithertheinstrumental constitution or role of the orchestra, but can be useful todistinguish different ensembles based in the same city (for instance, theLondonSymphony Orchestra and theLondon Philharmonic Orchestra). A symphonyorchestra will usually have over eighty musicians on its roster, in some cases overa hundred, but the actual number of musicians employed in a particularperformance may vary according to the work being played and the size of thevenue. A leading chamber orchestra might employ as many as fifty musicians;some are much smaller than that. Orchestras can also be found in schools. The
term concert orchestramay sometimes be used (e.g.,BBC ConcertOrchestra;RT Concert Orchestra)no distinction is made on size of orchestra byuse of this term, although their use is generally distinguished as for live concert. Assuch they are commonly chamber orchestras.
Instrumentation
The typical symphony orchestra consists of four proportionate groups ofsimilarmusical instruments called thewoodwinds,brass,percussion,andstrings,
and also the fifth proportionate group of similar musical instruments like therhythmsection in modern times. The orchestra, depending on the size, contains almost allof the standard instruments in each group. In the history of the orchestra, itsinstrumentation has been expanded over time, often agreed to have beenstandardized by the classical period and Beethoven's influence on the classicalmodel.
Beethoven's influence
The so-called "standard complement" of double winds and brass in the orchestrafrom the first half of the 19th century is generally attributed to the forces called forbyLudwig van Beethoven.The exceptions to this are hisSymphony No. 4,Violin
Concerto,andPiano Concerto No. 4,which each specify a singleflute.Thecomposer's instrumentation almost always included paired flutes, oboes,clarinets, bassoons, horns and trumpets. Beethoven carefully calculated theexpansion of this particular timbral "palette" in Symphonies 3, 5, 6, and 9 for aninnovative effect. The third horn in the"Eroica" Symphony arrives to provide notonly some harmonic flexibility, but also the effect of "choral" brass in the Trio.Piccolo, contrabassoon, and trombones add to the triumphal finale ofhisSymphony No. 5.A piccolo and a pair of trombones help deliver storm and

sunshine in theSixth.TheNinth asks for a second pair of horns, for reasons similarto the "Eroica" (four horns has since become standard); Beethoven's use ofpiccolo, contrabassoon, trombones, and untuned percussionpluschorus andvocal soloistsin his finale, are his earliest suggestion that thetimbral boundariesof "symphony" might be expanded for good. But for several decades after his
departure, symphonicinstrumentationwas faithful to Beethoven's well-established model, with few exceptions.
Expanded instrumentation
Apart from the core orchestral complement, various other instruments are called foroccasionally. These include theclassicalguitar,heckelphone,flugelhorn,cornet,harpsichord,andorgan.Saxophones,forexample, appear in a limited range of 19th and 20th century scores. Whileappearing only as featured solo instruments in some works, for exampleMauriceRavel's orchestration ofModest Mussorgsky'sPictures at an ExhibitionandSergeiRachmaninoff'sSymphonic Dances,the saxophone is included in other works,
such as Ravel'sBolro,Prokofiev'sRomeo and Juliet Suites 1 and 2,VaughanWilliamsSymphony No.6 andSymphony No.9 andWilliam Walton'sBelshazzar'sFeast,and many other works as a member of the orchestral ensemble.Theeuphonium is featured in a few lateRomantic and20th century works, usuallyplaying parts marked "tenor tuba", includingGustav Holst'sThe Planets,andRichard Strauss'sEin Heldenleben.TheWagner tuba,a modified member ofthehorn family, appears inRichard Wagner's cycleDer Ring des Nibelungenandseveral other works byRichard Strauss,Bla Bartk,and others; it has aprominent role inAnton Bruckner'sSymphony No. 7 in E Major.[5]Cornets appearinPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's balletSwan Lake,Claude Debussy'sLa Mer,andseveral orchestral works byHector Berlioz.Unless these instruments are played bymembers doubling on another instrument (for example, a trombone playerchanging to euphonium for a certain passage), orchestras willusefreelance musicians to augment their regular rosters.
The 20th century orchestra was far more flexible than its predecessors.[6]Duringcomposers Beethoven andFelix Mendelssohn's time, the orchestra was composedof a fairly standard core of instruments which was very rarely modified. As timeprogressed, and as the Romantic period saw changes in accepted modificationwith composers such as Berlioz, followed byJohannes Brahms andeventuallyGustav Mahler,the 20th century saw that instrumentation couldpractically be hand-picked by the composer.
