Nori Barajas-Murphy • Erin GratzUniversity of La Verne

“Does custom publishing work to improve attitude* and learning outcomes?”

*Attitude= interest, appreciation of a discipline

-Romine and Banerjee 2013

AGENDA

• Define eAuthoring taxonomy

• Identify benefits of collaboration

between instructional designers,

librarians, and faculty in design

and publication

• Analyze cost savings to students

• Review data of student learning

using eAuthored content versus

traditional textbooks@nononi28

2002 to 2012

Cost Savings in Research Methods = $219 – 94.49

Cost Savings in Music Appreciation = $88.75

Cost Savings in Human A&P = $72.30

A Pause for Reflection1. Consider what has been presented so

far2. Individually, make 3 bullet points of

ways to increase the use of eAuthored content at La Verne

Impact on Student Learning

“Reinforcing these findings, students in the baseline study who found their instructors’ annotations, highlights, and added e-text materials useful or whose instructors encouraged use of the e-textbooks were:

● significantly more likely to report that the e-textbooks helped them better understand the course ideas and concepts,

● allowed them to better organize and structure their learning, increased their engagement with course content,

● and made their study time more efficient.”Grajek 2013

Need for Empirical Research on Impact of Faculty Authored Course Content on

Learning

@nononi28 @gratzee

“Three factors have held back instructors’ ability and willingness to publish custom materials.

The first is the lack of technology; the second is rethinking of the economic model related to publishing and technological issues dealing with security, copyright, and patenting; and the third is the numerous erroneous assumptions and myths among instructors that accompany the idea of customization.”
