Why Im/imigrants?

En el último año la tasa de inmigrantes españoles en Reino Unido ha aumentado un 46% respecto al año anterior. Lo que unos han entendido como ‘movilidad exterior’ para otros ha sido una decisión forzada. ¿Pero cuales han sido los motivos que han rodeado los por-qués que han generado este movimiento migratorio en los últimos años?

El proyecto expositivo Why Im/migrants?, jugando bajo la idea de la palabra compuesta “im/migrants”, palabra que alberga en si misma la idea de que aquel que para unos es in-migrante, para otros emigrado, pretende reflejar dichos porqués y ser reflejo del momento actual a través de la interpretación de artistas contemporáneos que reflejen la situación social, económica, cultural, política y de valores que la sociedad española esta viviendo, trasladando ese reflejo, como si de im/migrants se tratase en suelo inglés.

Junto a las obras expuestas, en diferentes técnicas y formatos, el proyecto contará con la proyección documental, a base de entrevistas a ciudadanos británicos, que reflejen cual es su valoración ante el creciente aumento de la población inmigrante española, justamente en un momento en el que dicho debate roza los niveles más altos de interés en la historia de Reino Unido, llevando incluso en estos últimos meses a propuestas por parte del gobierno británico para controlar y regular de forma más estricta una movilidad que para la Unión Europea debería ser inviolable.

In the past year, the rate of Spanish immigrants in the UK has increased by 46% in com-parison with the year before it. What some have understood as ‘exterior mobility’ has, for others, been more of a forced decision. But what are the motives behind this surge in mi-gration over the past few years?

The exhibition project Why Im/migrants is based on the fact that the word ‘immigrants’ contains within it the word ‘migrants’, and therefore expresses both the concept of immi-gration and of migration. The project seeks to reflect the reasons behind the migratory mo-vement through interpretations from contemporary artists. This will act as a representation of the current social, economic, cultural and political situation and of the change in values that Spanish society is currently experiencing. Just as the Spanish are migrating to the UK, so too Spanish photographs are travelling to make their mark on British soil.

Together with the exhibited works, the project will, using different techniques and formats, project a documentary based on interviews with British citizens. In it, the interviewees will express their feelings towards the growing population of Spanish immigrants. This is precisely at a time when the debate on immigration is a hot topic in the UK, even leading to proposals from the British government to control and regulate immigration more strictly, even though the policy of intercontinental mobility within the EU should, in theory, be impenetrable.

WHY IM/MIGRANTS? Cuenta con una preselección de varios artistas españoles del más alto nivel. Todos ellos han mostrado no solo su interés de participación en dicha exposición sino también su apoyo y compromiso con esta propuesta, entendiéndola necesaria y acorde con el momento en que vivimos.

WHY IM / MIGRANTS? It features a shortlist of several Spanish artists of the highest level. All have shown their interest in participating in the exhibition and also their support and commitment to this proposal, understanding necessary and consistent with the time in which we live.
