ISLA DE PASCUA EASTER ISLANDIsla de origen volcánico que se eleva a 3.000 metros sobre elfondo oceánico. Su superficie basal tiene forma de trapecio yes 50 veces su área emergida. En cada vértice, producto deerupciones volcánicas, se localiza un volcán principal: el Poikeal este (3 millones de años), el Rano Kau en el sur (2 millonesde años) y el Maunga Terevaka en el norte (200.000 años).Además existen cerca de 104 centros eruptivos en forma decráteres, conos y domos.

An island of volcanic origin, which rises 3.000 meters abovethe floor of the sea. Its base is in the form of a trapezoid andcovers an area 50 times as large as the area above the surfaceof the water. In each corner, as a result of volcanic eruptions,there is a major volcano, Poike to the north-east (3 millionyears old), Rano Kau in the south (2 million years old), andTerevaka in the north-west (200.000 years old). There arealso another 104 eruptive centers in the form of craters, cones

and domes.

Rosa Ika Paoa pertenece a una antigua familia de artesanas rapanui. Mamá, abuelita, tías y hermanas han trabajado los materiales que la naturaleza les proporciona hasta el dia de hoy. Entre éstos se encuentra el Mahute (corteza de la morera), Kakaka (hojas secas de plátano), Purau (arbusto parecido al Kakaka), Poko Poko (hojas de palmera), Mauko (pasto del Rano Kau), Totora, Pure (conchitas), semillas y plumas de las aves locales. Con ello fabrican los trajes ancestrales, individuales, alfombras, canastos, sombreros, carteras y bellísimas coronas, collares y adornos para el pelo. Usted los puede admirar en las afueras del aeropuerto, en la feria y el mercado artesanal.

Tradicional Craftworks

Rosa Ika Paoa is a member of a longstanding family of ar-tists in Rapa Nui. Up until the present day, her grandmother, her mother, her aunts and sisters have all continued to work with the natural materials that the island gives to the artists in order to create such unique pieces of art. Among these are Mahute (mulberry bark), Kakaka (dried banana leaves) Purau (bushes somewhat similar to Kakaka), Poko Poko (palm leaves) Mauko (grasses from the volcano Rano Kau), Toto-ra, Pure (small shells taken from the rocks at the edges of the sea), seeds and local chicken feathers. With these ma-terials, the artists design and fabricate ancient costumes, throw rugs, baskets, hats, placemats, hand bags and absolu-tely gorgeous crowns, necklaces and hairpieces. These local masterpieces can be found and admired in various markets in the airport, central market and artists market uptown.

Para los Rapa-nui, la muerte forma parte de la vida, tal como la vida forma parte de la muerte. La vida física es sólo una etapa de la existen-cia humana. En tanto los sim-ples mortales eran cremados detrás de un Ahu, toda la población participaba en la des-integración del cuerpo físico de los hombres con Mana. Colocados sobre una plataforma circular, expuestos al sol, al viento y a la lluvia hasta que fi nalmente sólo quedaban los huesos. La gente observaba la desintegración día a día; el olor a descomposición les solía recordar lo que estaba aconteciendo. Los es-queletos se colocaban luego en las cavidades rectangulares delante del Ahu y los cráneos se grababan artísticamente. Finalmente, se in-humaban.Los Moais representan precisamente estas personalidades masculinas de una tribu, vale decir, hombres con Mana. Los reyes poseían este poder por nacimiento; otros podían ad-quirirlo en el transcurso de sus vidas, para lo cual debían realizar hazañas extraordina-rias, debían demostrarlo constantemente para no perderlo.

For the Rapanui, death forms part of life, just as life forms part of death. Our physical life is only one part of the existence of each human being. The people who lived on the Island, therefo-re, lived with death, with their dead an-cestors and with the bodies in decom-position. In the past, when the bodies were burned behind the ahu (platform) in a crematorium, the people partici-pated in the physical disintegration of the physical body of the men with mana (power or force).The dead body of a person with mana was placed on a circular platform, exposed to the sun, wind and rain until only the bones remained. The people were able to observe this disintegration day by day; the smell of decomposition was a per-manent reminder of what was happening. Once the muscles and soft organs were decomposed, the skeletons were placed in rectangular cavities in front of the ahu and the skulls were decoratively et-ched. Finally all was buried. The moais (statues) became precise symbols of these important male per-sonalities of each clan, that is to say, the men with mana. Men with extraor-dinary force could own other men and objects. The kings had this mana by right of birth; others could acquire it over their lifetime through extraordinary deeds. Pukao

Wealthier clans would order a moai made as a symbol of a dead man with mana. Once it was ready, after many months, the moai would travel, often for many kilometers, from the quarry at Rano Raraku to the ahu of the clan. Accompanied by solemn, pompous ceremonies, the moai would fi nally be lifted into place. On many of the moais a type of red hat, called a pukao, would be placed.Once standing, the eye sockets would be sculpted and eyes of white coral with pupils of obsidian or other colored rock would be placed. Thus, the mana of the dead person would be recovered. Then he could act and protect his clan. This is also the reason

that all the moais face toward the interior of the Island, toward the people and not out to the infi nite sea. Today, no moai has eyes. Today, the mana, that extraordinary and inexplicable spiritual force, is unable to act and protect. Un-til now, only one eye has ever been found in the sands of Anakena. How much force must the people have had to throw down the moais and to rip out their eyes, the symbol of living mana! It seems that all the moais had their eyes removed either before or after they were thrown down. Perhaps the eyes were thrown into the sea, or perhaps they were totally crushed and destroyed. Today, no one really knows.

Las tribus acaudaladas mandaban a con-feccionar un Moai, un símbolo del hombre difunto con Mana. Una vez listo, luego de varios meses de trabajo, el Moai recorría su camino, generalmente varios kilóme-tros, desde Rano Raraku hacia el Ahu de la tribu respectiva. Acompañado de fi es-tas solemnes y pomposas, era fi nalmente erigido. A muchos Moais se les colocaba luego un Pukao, una especie de sombre-rete rojo.Una vez erigido, se le esculpían las cuen-cas para los ojos que se fabricaban con coral blanco y pupilas de obsidiana o pie-dras de otro color. Así, el Mana del difun-

El fondo del mar está densamente cu-bierto por corales que se desarrollan alrededor de toda la isla, pero los fre-cuentes temporales y las marejadas en invierno impiden la formación de arreci-fes como las que existen en otras islas del Pacífi co. La transparencia de las aguas, gracias al escaso plancton y a la ausencia de contaminantes, permite una visibilidad que puede alcanzar has-ta los 60 metros de profundidad. Una profundidad que devela anclas y elemen-tos diversos que testimonian el trágico pasado de algunos navegantes europeos.

The sea fl oor is densely covered by corals which develop around the enti-re island, but the frequent storms and high seas in winter impede the forma-tion of the reefs that exist on other Pacifi c islands. The transparency of the water, as a result of the scarcity of plankton and the lack of contamina-tion, gives a visibility which can reach to a depth of 60 meters, a depth which reveals anchors and other diverse ele-ments which are a testimonial to the tragic past of some of the European navigators.

El origen volcánico de la isla ha crea-do un mundo submarino con montañas, acantilados y numerosas cavernas en la superfi cie como también en el fondo del mar. Su inusual ecosistema submarino, sumergido en un infi nito azul profundo, con una misteriosa fl ora y fauna con más de 160 especies, es una aventura para buzos profesionales y amateurs de todo el mundo. Los peces Indo-Pacífi cos, Endémicos y pelágicos son los más nu-merosos en estas aguas, cuya tempera-tura promedio no baja de los 22°C.

The volcanic origins of the Island have created an irregular relief of moun-tains, cliffs and numerous caves on the surface as well as under the sea. The unusual submarine ecosystem, submerged in an infi nite deep blue, with a mys-terious fl ora and fauna of more than 160 species, is an adventure for both professional and amateur divers from around the world. La zona más atractiva para la práctica del buceo es la costa Oeste, donde se en-cuentra el pueblo de Hanga Roa, porque cuenta con un importante relieve submari-no cubierto con abundantes especies coralíferas como el Kare Nui Nui. Otros lugares relevantes son los acantila-dos de los islotes de Motu Nui y Motu Kao Kao, las cavernas de Motu Tauta-ra, Omohi, Tepeu, Anakena, Ovahe y La Pérouse en la zona Norte.
