Coach Howard credited Notre Dame who he said “served tough and created some chaos for us in serve receive”. Howard praised the play of the girls in some new roles— “Rylee Menster was a great spark for us and really did a nice job on the right side with 6 kills and no errors. Sami Johnson had to play a primary outside hier role and managed her me on the court well. Sydney Williams led the defense with 11 digs and our seers really moved the ball well”. The Dons entered the game 7-0 on the year and believe me when I say they are a really good team—they simply belong in an 11-man environment. 39 boys on a roster that doesn’t play JV games? If I said any more it would sound like sour grapes. Springville played valiantly and gave their normal 110%, it just, put simply wasn’t enough. Don Bosco led the enre game and it wasn’t unl the fourth quarter that the O’s found the end zone falling by a final of 72-14. Senior Jacob Loehr threw 7 compleons for 1 score and 97 yards in his final high school football game. Senior Max Boland ran for an Oriole TD while Senior Niklas Brede had 1 catch for 7 yards. Senior’s Ma Carson, Andy Hagensick, John Evens and Carter Gillmore played great defense the enre night and finish their careers with character and integrity. Springville finishes the season with a 5-6 overall record winning 4 straight prior to the play-off loss. The end of a season is never an easy one but we thank the players and coaches for making our Friday’s so fun to look forward to. It’s a great day to be an Oriole!

VOLLEYBALL PLAYS FOR STATE BERTH TONIGHT

By a mere glance at the box scores, you’d think the Lady O’s have been cruising through the last portion of their season. But a conversation with Coach Howard quickly puts things in perspective for you. The girls are battle tested, humble and hungry! Burlington Notre Dame was their regional semi-final foe on Friday and the girls were prepared as always, winning it in three straight sets; 25-16, 25-14 and 25-17. Coach Howard credited Notre Dame who he said “served tough and created some chaos for us in serve receive”. Howard praised the play of the girls in some new roles— “Rylee Menster was a great spark for us and really did a nice job on the right side with 6 kills and no errors. Sami Johnson had to play a primary outside hitter role and managed her time on the court well. Sydney Williams led the defense with

11 digs and our setters really moved the ball well”. He also mentioned their stellar serving game which helped keep Notre Dame from being able to attack too well. Friday’s win sets up another battle with Bellevue Marquette, their fourth contest this season. Springville is 3-0 against the Mohawks but we all know that this time of year is an entirely new season. Game time is 7pm, the location is Maquoketa, Iowa. Make your carpool plans now and venture East to witness another historical semi final game that sends our girls to state competition! Let’s Go O’s!

FOOTBALL TEAM ENDS SEASON WITH A PLAY-OFF LOSS

After qualifying for the play-offs for the first time in two years, the O’s had an upset in mind when they squared off against Don Bosco for the second time this season. Suffering a 54-6 loss at their hands in week two, Coach Martin and his staff had the guys motivated for the re-match but it just wasn’t meant to be. Don Bosco led the entire game and it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the O’s found the end zone falling by a final of 72-14. Senior Jacob Loehr threw 7 completions for 1 score and 97 yards in his final high school football game. Senior Max Boland ran for an Oriole TD while Senior Niklas Brede had 1 catch for 7 yards. Senior’s Matt Carson, Andy Hagensick, John Evens and Carter Gillmore played great defense the entire night and finish their careers with character and integrity. Springville finishes the season with a 5-6 overall record winning 4 straight prior to the play-off loss. LORIMER WRAPS UP CROSS COUNTRY SEASON AT STATE MEET

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK… There’s some pretty wild mascots out there and this week we look at Centralia, Illinois—population 13,032. The smaller, South Central town has just one public High School and their mascot? They compete as the Orphans. They earned their name in the early 1900’s when making an appearance at the state basketball tournament. The radio announcer said their mismatched uniforms made them look like a bunch of orphans, and there you go. Their colors are red and black and they have the usual athletic programs as well as bowling and swimming.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… Here’s this weeks contests for you to make your picks from, a little bit of everything. High School, College and the Pros: Don Bosco at Elkader TCU at Oklahoma State LSU at Alabama Chicago Bears at San Diego Chargers Choose your winners and for the tie-breaker, predict how many points Iowa will score on Indiana Saturday. This week’s winner came down to the tie-breaker. Many of you were 2 for 4 but Larry Riley was the closest on the tie-breaker. He predicted Iowa would score 27 points on Maryland—and they finished with 31. Thanks for playing and have a great week.

Junior Sam Lorimer ended his cross country season on the year’s largest platform—running in Fort Dodge at the State Cross Country meet. We all know that he tends to be a bit hard on himself, well scratch that—very hard on himself. That is primarily the reason he’s so successful of course and last Saturday he made a repeat appearance at the state meet finishing in 32nd place. That is 32nd out of 140 2A runners—a top third finish. Very impressive Sam and we congratulate you. Spring will bring the track and field season and we’ll no doubt see Sam training all winter , when you see him run by give him a cheer, there isn’t a harder working athlete in our community!
