Head coach Nate Sanderson had nothing but posives to reflect on aſterward, telling us “we were able to force CVC into a number of turnovers that led to easy baskets for us. GIRLS BASKETBALL OPENS UP WITH A DOMINATING WIN

I have to tell you Oriole fans, if you haven’t yet synced your calendar with the Springville basketball schedule, you better get on it. The Lady O’s are back in action and if you miss a second of it you are missing plenty. This season looks to be no different than last, lots of action with swift passing, great transition offense and shared scoring among the girls. Tuesday night they had their season opener, playing host to Cedar Valley and quickly demonstrated just how good they are; scoring immediately, putting on a smothering press, creating turnovers and converting easy buckets. Once again they look to be a team that distributes the ball well between each other—all five starters finished with 10 or more points and as a team they tallied 20 assists. Head coach Nate Sanderson had nothing but positives to reflect on afterward, telling us “we were able to force CVC into a number of turnovers that led to easy baskets for us. We also pushed the ball in transition very well. Our size was definitely an advantage as we grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, and out-rebounded CVC 39-18 on the night”. The O’s jumped out to a 27-6 first quarter lead, took a 51-14 lead into the half time break and cruised through the second half when all players got a touch and some varsity experience. BOYS BASKETBALL WINS HOME OPENER

The Oriole Boys team has a younger look this season with a Sophomore and three Juniors starting along side a Senior. They showed their youth a bit on Tuesday but settled in to a good rhythm allowing them to press off made baskets and pull away from a feisty Cedar Valley team. Head Coach Nick Merritt, said “There's no doubt we didn't necessarily play a great basketball game, but, it was the first game of the year and we are doing a lot of new things with a lot of new players so there is no doubt there are going to be some growing pains along the way. I was extremely happy with the amount of turnovers we generated through steals (18) and other CVC errors through our press as well as active hands on defense”. It was clear from the onset that these kids like to run the floor and take the outside shots and their press created quite a bit of havoc for CVC. The guys jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first quarter and held a 19-13 edge on the Huskies at the half. In the third quarter they opened up their offense and pulled away, sailing to a 55-33 win in the 2015 season opener. Youngster Ryan Barner, a Sophomore, finished with a game high 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Senior Jacob Loehr hauled down 7 boards while Junior Cavanaugh Riley led in scoring with 15 points. As a team the boys shot 32% from the field and Coach Merritt commented that “shot selection” will continue to be a focus for the Oriole’s but “it’s always great to start the season off with a win”. Next up for the boys is East Buchanan on Friday right here at home following the girls 6:15 game. Let’s Go O’s!

ARCHERY SEASON OPENS UP WITH RECORD NUMBERS

The fourth season of Springville’s after school Archery in the Schools program is underway. A record 58 students in the 6-12 building have signed up and have begun practice. The middle school program consist of 34 archers and the high school program has 24 archers. With Bill Nelson retiring from his coaching duties, three new coaches have been added to the program. Head coach Gary Biles and assistant coach Tammy Mysak are entering their fourth season. New assistant coaches for the program this year are Daryl Pearson, Scott Rathjens and Charles Snider. Anticipation is running high as the archers began preparation for their first tournament, December 19 at Hawkeye Downs. This tournament is hosted by CPU and has a 1,200 archer capacity. A total of seven area tournaments, including Springville’s second annual tournament on February 6th are on the schedule. The state archery tournament will be held in Des Moines on March 5th. Stay tuned for tournament information as results come in.

SENIOR “O”… Oriole Pride features a Senior from time to time,

giving us the opportunity to learn a little more than their jersey number. This week we meet Lady Oriole Nicole Miller:

A FACE IN THE CROWD… Every now and then, Oriole Pride catches a player, parent or super fan at an

Amelia What was your first car? A red, Chevy station wagon-we called it the Fire Engine (it is rumored that Theresa could fit as many as 35 high school students inside) What do you hope Santa brings you this year? A maid! Thanks Teresa—you just never know. At the next Oriole event, You could be more than a Face In The Crowd!

THE FAMOUS AMONG US—OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT… Once in a while we catch a glimpse of someone at an Oriole event—a coach, fan or an athlete, and we take a second look because they remind us of someone. This week Head boys coach Nick Merritt caught our eye—he’s a dead ringer for former Bear Brian Urlacher! Maybe it’s on purpose, after all, Coach Merritt is a Bear’s fan.
