WELL WORTH THE WAIT

The volleyball teams have been working out for a month now and if you wanted to catch them in action you had to travel somewhere. At last, the varsity played at home in a quadrangular meet last Thursday and it sure was worth the wait! Three teams visited Machovec, NE Goose Lake, Anamosa and North Cedar. The O’s, ranked 8th in 1A, took care of NE Goose Lake first; 21-9 and 21-18. Next up was Anamosa and Springville disposed of them; 21-11 and 21-7. Last was the key match-up. North Cedar is ranked ninth in 2A volleyball and the girls were amped up for the opportunity to play them at home. Coach Howard, in his post game comments told us “ Springville won the first set (21-16) with aggressive attacking, great defense and solid serving putting together maybe the best set of the season. Springville lost a close second set (18-21) by a few late missed attacks. The third set was taken over by North Cedar's

Darby Hawtry who may have received every set that game. Springville battled but finally fell 11-15”. The accolades continued as Howard added, “ Tonight I was proud of our team. They played solidly all night and again without a couple of players. It definitely showed the depth of our team to be able to again fill those spots. Sami Johnson had a great night coming in as an outside and playing defense and Hallie Corum and Nicole Miller were solid defensively”. Springville returns home this Thursday to open up Tri-Rivers Conference play and they’ll host East Buchanan. Freshmen

get things started at 5:15—rumor is it’s a black out night so dress accordingly and remember to arrive early, there is never a spare seat to be had—Let’s Go O’s!

Wednesday, September 16, 2015 Oriole Pride 3 ORIOLES DROP LOSS TO WARRIORS

Forgive me for not quoting who this belongs to, but we often say, “defense wins ball games” and it’s true for all sports. Friday night the Oriole football team took the field with the visiting Elkader Warriors for their inaugural home opener and with the night came plenty of hype and expectations. Celebrating 50 years of Oriole football, hosting a team ranked in every 8-man poll you can find on the web and coming off a disappointing road game at Don Bosco—there were a lot of eyes on Allison Field. Springville, a deceiving 1-2, has multiple weapons and talents on both sides of the ball and while they’ve played 3 games already, they have yet to put everything together so when Friday came around we were ready for a ball game. Elkader took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter and then the O’s settled down. With 4:16 left in the opening frame, Senior QB Jacob Loehr scored on a keeper from the 1 yard line. James Fitzgerald, a Junior, was good on his PAT and it was 14-7. The second quarter opened with Elkader starting on their own 30 yard line and the Oriole defense forced a punt. Springville failed to gain a first down however and punted it back to the Warriors. After picking up a first down and facing 3rd and 8, Elkader ran a reverse and took it to the end zone for a touch down. After the two point conversion they took a 22-7 lead with 7:52 in the half. The O’s were caught off guard when the Warriors pooched an onside kick and the Elkader offense came out to start on our 35. They seized the momentum and two plays later scored another six and added the two point conversion to lead 30-7. On the Orioles next possession Junior, Seth Blake broke several tackles to scramble to the end zone for a touch down. The two point conversion was unsuccessful and Springville cut into the Elkader lead, 30-13. After each team turned the ball over on downs, Elkader wasted little time in scoring and picked up a two point conversion to add to their lead, 38-13 with 1:22 in the half. Springville answered when Blake took a hand off and once again broke free for an Oriole TD. Loehr kept the ball for a two point conversion and just like that, it was 38-21 with 32 seconds on the clock. Now it was time for an Oriole onside and they mastered it perfectly. Senior Andy Hagensick recovered it to give the O’s a chance at another quick score. After a penalty that had the Oriole’s looking at 4th and 23, Blake ran a fake punt and boy it was a beauty, but his 10 yard pick up wasn’t enough and the ball was turned back over to Elkader. With only 3 seconds on the clock they had one play and it resulted in nothing and at the half it was a 38-21 ball game. The third quarter opened with Elkader kicking and Junior Cavanaugh Riley was the return man and he brought it out to the 35. Two plays later Loehr hit Blake for a sweet, 55 yard pass play and an Oriole touch down! The extra point attempt was no good and Springville pulled within eleven, 38-27. Elkader answered right away and went up 44-27. Once again though, the O’s answered back. After a Riley return to the 36, a Blake first down and another by Senior, Andy Hagensick—Loehr hit Hagensick again for a short, 7 yard pass that

resulted in an Oriole TD. Fitzgerald’s kick was good and it was 44-34 with 6:15 in the third. This however, would be the last that Springville scored while Elkader continued to find pathways to the end zone. The Warriors picked up their third win of the season with the 72-34 outing on Allison Field and moved Springville to 1-2. “I thought we did a good job of executing on offense. We were able to go into a no huddle offense and still rotate into other sets without having to use a timeout and/or having a penalty...Overall defense was good and rarely out of position”, said Coach Martin. While always looking to improve, Coach said “We still need to stop the big plays. We get teams in situations that should favor our defense and unable to get the needed stop to continue the momentum that we had. Finishing off plays will continue to be our achilles heel until we execute when put in the position to do so”. Next up for Springville is a road game at Midland and Coach Martin said “If we eliminate the big plays and control the line of scrimmage, both things we should be able to do, we should have success on their homecoming which is always nice to do”. In the Elkader loss, Loehr had a heck of a night, he threw for 199 yards and 2 touch downs while Blake exploded on offense, rushing for 95 yards and scoring 3 touch downs. Head on over to Wyoming Friday night—it’s always nice to see our fans outnumbering the home team. Need a ride? Say the word—we’ll get you there. JV kicks off at 5:30 and the Varsity will follow. (Loehr, above has plenty of time to throw thanks to blocks by Carson and Oxley; Blake to the left, breaks another tackle to find his way to the end zone)

FIFTY YEARS OF ORIOLE FOOTBALL CELEBRATED

Oh to be a fly on the wall, it’s always a great time when you can listen to the stories of alumni when they return to Springville. Last Friday at Allison Field, all players who previously wore an Oriole football jersey were recognized during half time of the varsity game. It was well attended and included players from the 1965 team clear up through players from 2014. It made for an electric night on Allison Field and it certainly was special to watch these gentleman take the field. Also in attendance was Nancy Allison, esteemed widow of Coach Harold Allison.

A FACE IN THE CROWD… Oriole Pride features a

Springville fan, parent or student from time to time. This week we caught up with Oriole Football Alum Mark Ramsey, class of ‘69. Mark played for Coach Harold Allison and was kind enough to tell us the following: Position you played: Ofensive Guard Springville’s biggest rival: No one particular—they were all rivals Most memorable game: “Ed-Co, my senior year. Kent Ulrich had 200+ yards and we won” Favorite teacher: Jane McConaughy Jersey Number: 65 (Mark’s senior picture is to the right, he is below with his team mates wearing #65 and Miss McConaughy is pictured below right) You just never know—at the next Oriole event You could be more than a Face in the Crowd!

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… This week we have a combo of Prep, College and Professional football games:

Kee at Central City Pitt at Iowa Iowa State at Toledo Seahawks at Packers Make your picks and for the tie-breaker, how many rushing yards as a team will the Oriole’s have at Midland Friday? This week we have a single winner—and he’s a repeat winner—Cavanaugh Riley was a perfect 4 for 4 as were Kristi March and Brandon Smalley, but Cavanaugh was closest on the tie breaker with his 12 point prediction. Thanks for playing and have a great week everyone.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK… There’s some pretty wild mascots out there, this week we look at Canon-McMillan High School in Pennsylvania. Their sports? The usual: football, basketball, track - but also swimming & diving and lacrosse. Now did you know that the first Bic Mac sold by McDonald’s was sold in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania? And did you know that Canonsburg, the home of Canon-McMillan HS is just 18 miles from Pittsburgh? Well now you do—and so it is no surprise that the High School goes with the Big Macs as their mascot. Actually, that isn’t really why they went with the Macs—the Mc in McMillan is why they chose the Macs and they added Big later—perhaps because of the McDonalds sandwich(?). One just never knows—but their school fight song does ring a bell; 2 all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese… just kidding!
