AIAKO HARRIA Description and situation Palaeozoic granite massif, located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the eastern end of Gipuzkoa. Surface area 6,806 ha Protection status ZEC - NATURA 2000 (ES2120016) Other regional or national protections Natural Park since 1995 Main uses Preferably forestry. The level areas (8%) are located on the highest crests and hills . Ownership 83% Public Utility Mountain. Habitats targeted by LIFE (4030) Dry European heath, (6230) plant formations with Nardus, (7140) transition mires. These habitats occupy 8% of the total surface area of the ZEC. Aiako Harria is a massif located in the north-eastern zone of Gipuzkoa, on the border with Navarre. This is abrupt terrain with elevations hardly exceeding 800 metres in height. The space encompasses part of the Bidasoa River's left shore, which acts as the eastern border for the ZEC. Palaeozoicperiod.Severalrangesofelevations,thesunandshadeslopes,andthethermal

conditionsoftheravinesmakeavariedplantlandscape,markedbytheacidityofthesubstrate
andmodifiedbyafforestation.
Halfofthesurfaceareaisoccupiedbyforestplantationswithconifersanddeciduoustrees.
Forestswithautochthonousspecieshavebeenreduced,althoughthereisstillahighnumber
ofbeech,Pyreneanoakandmatureoakgrovesthathostagreatnumberofspecies,someof
whichareendangered,suchastheblackwoodpecker,orthatareofcommunityinterest,such
assaproxylicinsects(RosaliaalpinaandLucanuscervus).
ThehabitatsformingthemountainpastureenvironmenttargetedbythisLIFEoccupy542ha
andarelocatedonthehillsandhighpartsofthemountainrange.Thesearepasture
communitieswhereacidophileheathisofnote(inmanycases,initsmostdeterioratedstate,
havingbecomegorse)andmountainmeadows,thatoffershelterandfoodtoendangered
fowl-faunaspecies,suchasthehenharrierandthegriffonvulture.Ofthefloraassociatedwith
pastures,thespeciesDaphnecneorumisofnote,cataloguedas"Endangered"intheBasqueCatalogueofEndangeredSpeciesoftheBasqueCountryAutonomousCommunity.
Inthisspace,withtheOREKAMEDIANproject,theaimistoalleviatetheeffectscausedbythe
imbalanceinthelivestockload,adaptingittoeachkindofhabitatandbycontrollingthe
spreadofbrush.AnattemptwillalsobemadetoregeneratetheEndaraoakgrove,andthe
existingmarsheswillberestoredtoensurethefutureoftheendangeredfloraassociatedwith
them.
