Formerly, a woman who found herself with child in dif icult cir-cumstances relied on family, friends and religious and social service organizations for support and as-sistance; there was a sense of shared responsibility. And, very often the father of the child recognized his responsibility for the situation and would respond accordingly. Now, the contraceptive culture has changed all that: the pregnancy has become “her problem.” She should have prevented it from hap-pening, and now she alone has to make the problem go away. Worse still, it is not uncommon for the very people who should help her (the father of the child, her family and friends) to encourage and even pres-sure her to have an abortion. This sad state of affairs brings me to my second point: abortion is never sole-ly the mother’s act. Others, to a greater or lesser de-gree, share culpability whenever this evil is perpe-trated. Over the centuries the Church has developed a nuanced ethical teaching on what we call “cooperation in moral evil,” and this is relevant to the question of when such participation precludes a Catholic from receiving the Eucharist, which also has a particular application to Catholics in public life. The major distinction is between formal and mate-

rial cooperation in evil.The key to formal cooperation is that I will the evil that is being done by another, and my cooperation is given to help bring it about. This applies clearly to those who willingly kill or as-sist in killing the child, but also to others who pres-sure or encourage the mother to have an abortion, pay for it, provide inancial assistance to organiza-tions to provide abortions, or support candidates or legislation to make abortion more readily available. SECCIÓN2:COOPERACIONENELMALMORAL(Continuación). Los defensores del aborto argumentan que estan em-poderando a las mujeres, pero de hecho la practica generalizada de la anticoncepcion y el aborto ha crea-do una enorme carga para la mujer embarazada. Ante-riormente, una mujer que se encontraba embarazada en circunstancias difıciles dependıa de familiares, amigos, organizaciones religiosas y de servicios socia-les para obtener apoyo y asistencia; habıa un sentido de responsabilidad compartida. Y, muy a menudo, el padre del nino reconocıa su responsabilidad por la situacion y respondıa en consecuencia. Ahora, la cul-tura anticonceptiva ha cambiado todo eso: el embara-zo se ha convertido en un “problema de ella”. Ella de-berıa haber evitado que sucediera y ahora ella sola tiene que hacer que el problema desaparezca. Peor aun, no resulta extrano que las mismas personas que deberıan ayudarla (el padre del nino, su familia y ami-gos) la alienten e incluso presionen para que aborte. Esta triste situacion me lleva a mi segundo punto: el aborto nunca es unicamente acto de la madre. Otros, en mayor o menor medida, comparten la culpabilidad cada vez que se perpetra este mal. A lo largo de los siglos, la Iglesia ha desarrollado una ensenanza etica matizada sobre lo que llamamos “cooperacion en el mal moral” y esto es relevante para la cuestion de cuando dicha cooperacion impide que un catolico re-ciba la Eucaristıa, que tambien tiene una aplicacion particular a los catolicos en la vida publica. La princi-pal distincion es entre la cooperacion formal y mate-rial en el mal. La clave de la cooperacion formal es que hare el mal que esta haciendo otro y mi cooperacion se da para ayudar a llevarlo a cabo. Esto se aplica cla-ramente a aquellos que voluntariamente matan o ayu-dan a matar al nino, pero tambien a otros que presio-nan o alientan a la madre a abortar, pagan por ello, proporcionan asistencia inanciera a organizaciones que realizan abortos o apoyan a candidatos o legisla-ciones que persiguen un acceso mas facil al aborto. La cooperacion formal en el mal nunca esta moralmente justi icada.
