THIS THANKSGIVING 2009,LET'S BE THANKFUL...

Keep Religion Out ofHealth Care Reform

By M. Patricia West, MSSW

Ocurr

ielcias

Elected officials' religious views should betheir own private affair, neither imposed bythem upon the nation, nor imposed by the

nation as condition to holding public office. Thismeans their private religious views should not be im-posed via the current debate about health care reform.

Important life decisions are responsibilities of in-dividuals and families, not of government or religiousgroups. On that, most of us can agree. There is also astrong history of separation of church and state inAmerica, and one of our founding principles is of free-dom from religious intolerance. That's why I wasdeeply offended when Roman Catholic Church bish-ops lobbied Congress on health care reform in orderto deny millions of women access to abortion.

The Stupak-Pitts amendment potentially goes far-ther than any other federal law to restrict a woman'saccess to abortion. By prohibiting women who receivepartial federal subsidies from buying insurance plansthat cover abortion, the Stupak amendment bans abor-tion coverage by any insurer participating in the healthexchange. The amendment favors one religious viewof abortion and enlists the federal government as en-forcer. As such, it is an egregious assault on the rightsof women and an enormous step backward for thosewho believe in separation of church and state.

President Obama has said, "If you're happy andsatisfied with the insurance that you have, it's notgoing to change." But this House proposal potentiallyreduces health care coverage for more than 80 percentof typical employer-based insurance plans that nowcover abortion.

Women supposedly will be able to obtain abortioncoverage by purchasing a separate, single-service"rider." However, according to the National Women'sLaw Center, in the five states that currently require aseparate rider for abortion coverage, there is no evi-dence that plans offer such riders. Furthermore, women are unlikely to buy a rider to cover abortion, because they do not plan for unplanned pregnancy orone that is needed for medical or health reasons.

A number of national polls have shown that Amer-icans strongly believe health insurance should includecomplete women's reproductive health services andthat women have the full range of choices offered. Arecent poll commissioned by Moving Forward, a val-ues-based research initiative developed by the WomenDonors Network and the Communications Consor-tium, found that a majority, 56 percent, believe thosereceiving subsidies should be able to purchase a healthinsurance plan that covers abortion. The House pro-posal does not reflect that view.

Meaningful reform has the potential to bringhealth care to more American women and their fami-lies than ever before. But Congress should not be inthe business of restricting choices for women, partic-ularly for religious reasons.

Instead of kowtowing to Catholic bishops, Con-gress should stand up for what the majority of Amer-icans want in health care reform -and they wantchoices, not limitations. And Congress must stead-fastly protect the principle of "The Separation ofChurch and State"

Personal Pedestrian Safety:Be Visible To Others

By Hilbert Morales, El Observador

Too many individuals do not promote their own per-sonal pedestrian safety when walking or riding abicycle especially during the fall and winter

months when natural lighting is much dimmer. Toomany individuals are wearing dark clothing thatmakes them invisible (well camouflaged) in darksettings. As a vehicle driver, I have experi-enced many potential occasions when at thelast moment, I noticed a pedestrian wearingdark clothing and whose only visible wearwere the white tennis shoes.

The same goes for bicyclists.... no reflectors; nolight colored clothing, which provides contrast againstdark backgrounds or in shady locations.

Too many individuals are unconscious about their need toenhance their own safety by wearing light colored exterior cloth-ing during the winter days when more darkness is experienced. Lightcolors provide contrast against dark backgrounds resulting in being no-ticed early on by motorists or bicyclists.

Also, too many forget that about one-third of vehicle drivers (and the pop-ulation at large) have compromised vision due to age related loss of acuity orother factors such as cataracts and age-related-macular degeneration. A good portionof our population is over age 50 when failing vision becomes more prominent. Becomeaware of your personal need of always being visible to others.

Four-hundred years ago, Galileo Galileilooked into his telescope and foreverchanged mankind's perspective of it-

self and its role in the universe. Today, throughthe use of telescopes, mankind is able to look tothe deepest parts of the universe and discover theunimaginable.

On Tuesday, November 12, 2009, The Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose tookvisitors on a journey to the center of our galaxy

when it unveiled mural-sized images of theMilky Way's core as seen by NASA's HubbleSpace Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope andChandra X-ray Observatory.

"It seems appropriate that this unveilingtakes place in Silicon Valley, the home of manyleading technology companies," said San JoseCouncilmember Sam Liccardo (Dist.3). "Wehope that these images will inspire our youth tolook at technology and science as being a part oftheir futures."

The stunning photographs of the central re-gion of our Galaxy commemorate the Interna-

tional Year of Astronomy 2009."The images are a work of art and extraordi-

nary achievement," said Michael Kaufman, SanJose State University Professor of Physics andAstronomy. "The light from these images took26 thousands years to reach us and Galileo didnot see the light until it traveled 98 percent of thedistance it needed to reach us."

Within these images one can trace the spec-tacle of stellar evolution - from vibrant regionsof star birth, to young hot stars, to old cool stars,to seething remnants of stellar death called blackholes. This activity occurs against a fiery back-drop in the crowded, hostile environment of theGalaxy's core, the center of which is dominatedby a super massive black hole millions of timesmore massive than our Sun.

Since Galileo's spyglass, telescopes havegrown ever larger and ever better, and havemoved to mountaintops and into space. NASA'sGreat Observatories represent the crowningachievements of astronomy four centuries laterand are honoring this legacy with a nationalimage unveiling.

"Mankind has also made other achievementssuch as the understanding of gravity and the abil-ity to measure distances in space," Kaufman said.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library isone of only two Bay Area locations selected toparticipate in the nationwide unveiling of thesenever-before-seen images. Eyes on the Sky: The

Universe-Yours to Discover will be held on Sat-urday, November 21 from 12pm-5pm. Admis-sion is free. For more information visitwww.SJLibrary.org/nasa.htm or call (408) 808-2397.

The Deep Space Images from NASA's GreatObservatories exhibit will continue through De-cember 2010 at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Library.

"We need to work hard on passing immigrationreform by early next year, because if we don't, ac-cording to local Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, headof the Immigration Subcommittee, we might haveto wait 10 more years", said Richard Hobbs, immi-gration attorney and Associate Director of Services,Immigrant Rights and Education Network (SIREN).

On Wednesday, November 18, Hobbs and localcommunity members gathered at the SIREN officein San Jose to listen in on an immigration reform na-tional teleconference with Congressman LuisGutierrez, (D-IL).

"We will start a massive immigration reform

campaign across all fifty states in the comingmonths," Gutierrez said. "And we will win becauseimmigration reform will benefit all of us and our na-tion's economy. We also want deportation and theseparation of families to end"

Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) also believes that theseparation of families should end.

"Tearing families apart and completely securingthe border will not solve our immigration problem,"Velazquez said. "We need to let people know aboutthe important work that immigrants do and have al-ways done for this country."

Gutierrez and Velazquez encouraged immigra-tion reform advocates to continue to call and writeto their elected officials and ask them to pass immi-gration reform.

"We just can't wait any longer," Gutierrez said."Everyone needs to work. Call your Congressionalrepresentative and even the President."

A higher number of Latinos came out to vote in2008 and 2/3 voted for Barrack Obama, helpingelect the first US African American president. Now,those who supported Obama in 2008 are asking himto keep his promise and pass a significant immigra-tion reform bill.

"Soon it will be a year since President Obamacame into office," Gutierrez said. "We want him tokeep his promise before his state of the union ad-dress next year. We can wait no longer."

Immigration reform advocates want undocu-mented immigrants to earn the chance to become

legal and become citizens."We will accept background checks, pay our

taxes and learn to speak English", Gutierrez said."We also want the DREAM Act to be stronger andto pass more quickly."

According to Angelica Salas, Director of theCoalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los An-geles, anti-immigrant reform advocates in the pastout-called pro-immigrant advocates 20-1. "Wemarched in 2006, we voted in 2008, lets make thishappen in 2010," Salas said.

The telephone may be an accepted partof life in the 21st century, but not foran estimated three million Californians.

Most of us take using the telephone for granted. But if you have difficulty hearing, seeing, speak-ing, moving, or remembering, what seems to be asimple telephone call can be challenging tomany—preventing communication with family, friends, and others.

The same telecommunications technology thatfuels never-ending innovation has produced awealth of specialized phones and devices so peoplewith disabilities can communicate with family andfriends. These phones are provided by the Deafand Disabled Telecommunications Program(DDTP) at no charge to eligible Californians.

DDTP distributes telecommunications equip-ment and services that improve communication forall Californians. A program of the California PublicUtilities Commission (CPUC), the DDTP providesCalifornians with specialized telephone equipmentand relay services through the California Tele-phone Access Program (CTAP) and CaliforniaRelay Service (CRS), respectively. CTAP providesspecialized phones that amplify sound, adjust tone, light up for incoming calls, display phone conver-sation as text, have large buttons with raised num-bers, are portable, or have speed dial phone buttonsincorporating photographs. CTAP offers approxi-mately 60 types of specialized phones and devices,so all Californians can communicate their ownway.

CRS provides specially-trained Relay Opera-tors and Communication Assistants to relay tele-phone conversations between people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or are speech-disabled with thosethey wish to communicate with by telephone.CRS, captioned telephone, and Speech-to-Speechrelay services are all offered in English and Span-ish.

California residents are eligible for specializedequipment if they have phone service and are cer-tified by a licensed physician, medical doctor, oraudiologist. There is no cost, obligation, age, or in-come requirement.

Once an individual qualifies for a specializedtelephone, they can call 1-800-806-1191 or go intoone of CTAP’s Service Centers throughout Cali-fornia to determine the most appropriate device fortheir requirements. CTAP staff will demonstratephone features, recommend the phone that best fitsa client’s needs, and provide training on how to useand personalize the phone.

DDTP is funded by a small surcharge that ap-pears on all Californians' telephone bills. Themoney collected pays for both CTAP and CRS.This surcharge appears on phone bills as "CARelay Service and Communications DevicesFund."

Instrucciones:1. Precaliente el horno a 325 grados F (163 grados C). Combine la

(NAPSA)-A recent report published in The Journal of Nu-trition shows soy supports a healthy heart and bones. The newresearch detailed in the report was presented at the eighth Inter-national Soy Symposium on the role of soy in promoting goodhealth, which was held in Tokyo in November 2008.

"The research presented on soy and heart and bone healthshowed strong rationale for people to include soy in their diets,"said Mark Messina, Ph.D., author of the report and professor ofnutrition at Loma Linda University.

The new research showed that when people ate soy, theywere able to maintain normal levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.

A good approach to heart health is integrating a variety ofheart-healthy foods-like soy, other beans, nuts and certain veg-

etables-together into a healthy lifestyle. In addition to maintaining a healthy

heart, full-fat soy foods are also goodsources of an essential omega-3 fatty acid, which independently supports a healthyheart.

Plus, because many soy foods are low insaturated fat and cholesterol free, they cansupport healthy cholesterol levels when usedin place of many of the more traditionalsources of protein in the U.S. diet that tendto be high in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Soy foods may also help maintain ahealthy heart independent of their effects oncholesterol, such as sustaining a healthyblood pressure. The new research also foundthat higher soy intake was associated withsupporting strong bones.

Including soy as part of a healthy dietcan play an important role in promotingheart and bone health. All soy comes fromsoybeans, which are naturally grown beanssimilar in size to a pea. Soy is a nutrient-richfood delivering high-quality protein, carbo-hydrates, fiber, healthy fats and a number ofvitamins and minerals important to goodhealth.

Adding soy to your diet can be simple.Try soybeans, soy milk or tofu. For soy onthe go, look for SoyJoy, an all-natural, nutri-ent-rich food baked with whole soy and realfruit. The whole soybeans are ground to keepthe naturally occurring fiber, protein, vita-mins, minerals and other nutrients intact. Al-though not part of the research published inThe Journal of Nutrition report, SoyJoy of-fers a convenient way to get more soy intoone's diet.

For more information on whole soyfoods, visit soyjoy.com.

A new report shows soy supports ahealthy heart and bones. To easily add soyto your diet, look for edamame, tofu or soy

milk.
