PUEBLITO DE LOS DOMINICOS

Este es uno de los parques urbanos más grandes del mundo, y con el Cerro San Cristóbal como protagonista, el “Pulmón de Santiago”, adicionalmente es uno de los hitos de la capital, ofreciendo entre sus atractivos la mejor vista panorámica de la ciudad, su Funicular de 1925 y el Zoológico Nacional. El parque cuenta con múltiples rutas que se pueden hacer a pié, en bicicleta, o en vehículo, pero sin lugar a dudas la mejor forma para llegar al zoológico o a la cumbre es a bordo del Funicular.

CERRO SANTA LUCÍA

This is one of the largest urban parks in the world, and with the San Cristobal hill at the center stage as “Santiago’s Lungs” it is also one of the capital’s landmarks, offering among its attractions the best panoramic view of the city, its Funicular of 1925 and the National Zoo. The park has multiple routes which can be done on foot, by bicycle, or by vehicle, but undoubtedly the best way to get to the zoo or the summit is onboard the Funicular.

Declarado Monumento Histórico en 1983, fue bautizado como Santa Lucía por Pedro de Valdivia durante la fundación de Santiago. Su acceso y circunvalación que llega hasta la cima hoy es uno de los paseos más hermosos que se pueden realizar por Santiago; sin lugar a dudas es un oasis en el casco histórico de la capital. Aquí encontrarás bellas plazas, una espectacular arquitectura neoclásica entorno a la fuente Neptuno y tendrás la oportunidad de escuchar el “cañonazo de las 12”, salva de cañón que desde 1825 es disparada para anunciar el mediodía.

Declared Historical Monument in 1983, it was christened Santa Lucia by Pedro de Valdivia during the founding of Santiago. Its access and beltway to the summit is today one of the most beautiful outings you can do in Santiago; without a doubt it is an oasis within the capital’s historic center. Here you will find beautiful squares, a spectacular neoclassic architecture around Neptune’s fountain, and you will have the opportunity to hear the “noon gun salute”, a cannon blank fired at midday since 1825.

Este centro artesanal es uno de los lugares imperdibles cuando se visita Santiago. This artisan center is one of the must see places when visiting Santiago. This space creates a favorable environment to admire the handicraft samples that each and every one of the small shops offer, where you will find rustic furniture, leather and wood items, jewelry, knitted goods and even musical instruments. Visiting this center is without a doubt a unique experience which provides a small sample of Chilean tradition.

Fundado en 1880 ocupa desde 1910 un hermoso edificio de arquitectura neoclásica ubicada en el sector del Parque Forestal. Este museo, el primero de artes en Latinoamérica, está compuesto por un patrimonio artístico de más de 3.000 piezas, incluyendo una de las selecciones de esculturas y pinturas chilenas más grandes del país. Además, posee diversas obras universales, destacando las colecciones de grabados y pinturas italianas y españolas.

MUSEO DE BELLAS ARTES

Founded in 1880 it resides since 1910 in a beautiful building of neoclassical architecture located in an area of the Parque Forestal. This museum of fine arts, the first in Latin America, has an artistic heritage of more than 3.000 pieces, including one of the country’s largest assortments of Chilean sculptures and paintings. It also has a variety of universal masterpieces, where the collection of Italian and Spanish prints and paintings are prominent.

Este museo se creó con el fin de conmemorar a las víctimas de violaciones a los derechos humanos durante la dictadura militar ocurrida en Chile durante los años 1973 y 1990. El lugar, inaugurado en 2010 como una de las obras que celebra el Bicentenario del país, cuenta con tres pisos, donde se aprecian documentos respecto del clima político de la época, cartas, fotos y material audiovisual que contextualizan la historia. La obra se encuentra construida en el Barrio Matucana, donde se localizan varios de los museos más importantes de Santiago.

MUSEO DE LA MEMORIA

This museum was created to commemorate the victims of human rights violations during the military dictatorship, which took place in Chile between the years of 1973 and 1990. Inaugurated in 2010 as one of the works to celebrate the country’s bicentennial, it has three floors which exhibit documents portraying the political climate of the era, letters, photographs and audiovisual material which contextualizes the history. The building is located in the Matucana neighborhood, where some of the most important museums of Santiago are located.

Este museo, que funciona en el Palacio de la Real Aduana de Santiago, abrió sus puertas en el año 1981 con la misión de custodiar, difundir y estudiar el legado artístico de los pueblos precolombinos de América Latina. Es así como muestra una extensa colección de arte de las culturas prehispánicas como aztecas, mayas e incas y también de las originarias chilenas como mapuche, rapanui o selk’nam, entre otras.

MUSEO DE LA MODA

This museum, housed at the Royal Customs Palace of Santiago, opened its doors in 1981 with the mission to study, spread and preserve the artistic legacy of the Latin American Pre-Columbian culture. It exhibits an extensive collection of Pre-Hispanic art, from Aztec, Maya and Inca cultures, as well as those native to Chile such as Mapuche, Rapanui or Selk’nam among others.

La Chascona, una de las casas de Pablo Neruda, fue construida en 1953 y es actualmente un museo que alberga varias de las colecciones de este premio Nobel. El lugar también es usado como polo de organización de diversas actividades culturales y es sede de la Fundación Pablo Neruda. Ubicado en las faldas del Cerro San Cristóbal y en pleno Barrio Bellavista, fue el sitio en donde vivió junto a su esposa Matilde Urrutia hasta el día de su muerte.

MUSEO LA CHASCONA

La Chascona, one of Pablo Neruda’s homes, built in 1953, currently houses a museum with several of the Nobel Prize’s collections. The place is also used as a center for organizing diverse cultural activities and as headquarters for the Pablo Neruda Foundation. Located on the slopes of the San Cristobal Hill and the Bellavista neighborhood, it is where he lived with his wife Matilde Urrutia until the day he died.

Esta institución privada que fue inaugurada en 2007 por Jorge Yarur Bascuñán, se encuentra en su antigua casa familiar ubicada en la comuna de Vitacura. El museo exhibe más de 800 piezas confeccionadas desde el siglo V hasta la fecha, concentrándose en las décadas del 50 y 60. Dentro de la colección, destacan el vestido rojo de Marilyn Monroe, usado en el estreno teatral de la obra Panorama Desde El Puente; el famoso corsé de pechos cónicos diseñado para la cantante Madonna o el vestido blanco que usó la cantante Amy Winehouse en la cubierta de su álbum Back to Black, entre otros.

This private institution opened in 2007 by Jorge Yarur Bascuñan, is set at his old family home located in the Vitacura suburb. The museum exhibits more than 800 tailored pieces from the 5th century to the present day, focusing on the 50s and 60s. The collection includes amongst many others, Marilyn Monroe’s red dress used for the theatre premiere of Panorama from the Bridge; the famous conical breasts corset designed for Madonna; and the white dress worn by Amy Winehouse on the cover of her album Back to Black.

Las artesanías no sólo se transforman en un gran recuerdo de los lugares que visitamos, sino que constituyen un arte que habla de su gente y sus costumbres y que se hace necesario proteger en un mundo donde la producción en serie es el estándar. Muchos de los artesanos que se ven hoy en lugares como el Pueblito de Los Domínicos y en el pueblo de Pomaire, ofrecen productos representativos de Chile, que se han mantenido en el tiempo gracias a las tradiciones de confección que se han traspasado entre maestros y aprendices de generación en generación.

Handicrafts not only become a great memory of the places we visit, but also an art form that speaks of its people and their customs, and which is necessary to preserve in a world where mass production is the norm. Many artisans you see at places like the Pueblito de los Dominicos or the village of Pomaire, offer crafts that are representative of Chile, maintained over time thanks to workmanship traditions handed down from masters to apprentices, and from generation to generation.

Ubicado a 50 kilómetros de Santiago, en el sector de Melipilla, se encuentra Pomaire, un pequeño y pintoresco pueblo de artesanos alfareros. El lugar cuenta con una calle principal en donde se venden todo tipo de elementos hechos con greda o arcilla, desde ollas para hacer los platos típicos chilenos hasta el “chanchito”, un pequeño cerdo que generalmente es regalado a los niños como su primera alcancía. El pueblo también es muy famoso por su oferta gastronómica, aquí se pueden probar todas las exquisiteces del campo, como el pastel de choclo, las humitas, la cazuela, los porotos o la empanada, que en esta zona tiene la particularidad (y el deber) de pesar medio kilo.

Located 50 kilometers from Santiago in the area of Melipilla, Pomaire is a small and picturesque village of artisan potters. The place has a main street where all kinds of clay items are sold, from pots to prepare typical Chilean dishes to the “piggy”, a piglet generally given to children as their first piggy bank. The village is also famous for its cuisine; here you can taste country delicacies such as pastel de choclo (ground corn & meat preparation), humitas (corn paste), casuela (stew), porotos (beans) or empanada (meat pie) which in this area has the distinct feature (and obligation) to weigh half a kilo.

Siguiendo el curso del río Maipo, se despliega el hermoso valle del mismo nombre, con viñedos que cruzan esta zona de tierra arcillosa y clima mediterráneo, que es una de las más preciadas del país para el cultivo de las distintas cepas, en especial del Cabernet Sauvignon. A mediados del siglo XIX, don Silvestre Ochagavía, primer gran viñatero del país, visionó lo que sería después una realidad: fundar la primera viña chilena y ser testigo del nacimiento de los viñedos más importantes de Chile dando origen a cepas de vinos tintos y blancos. Este Valle, ubicado a 45 minutos de Santiago, se divide en 3 áreas con diferencias en su clima y tierra: Maipo Alto, tiene suelos que garantizan una óptima sanidad de la uva; Maipo Medio, con su clima más caluroso, que da como resultado vinos con notas intensas a frutos rojos; y Maipo Bajo, localidad de clima cálido, con buena madurez en las uvas y una entrega de vinos de alta calidad.

Following the course of the Maipo river, the beautiful valley of the same name unfolds, with vineyards that cross this clay soil and Mediterranean climate area, which is one of the country’s most sought after land for growing the different vine varieties, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. Towards the mid 19th century, Don Silvestre Ochagavia, first great winemaker of the country, envisioned what would later become a reality, founding Chile’s first winery and witnessing the birth of the most important Chilean vineyards of red and white wines. This valley located 45 minutes from Santiago, is divided into 3 areas with climate and land differences: Maipo Alto, has soils that ensure optimal grape health; Maipo Medio, with its warmer climate results in wines with more intense red fruit notes; and Maipo Bajo, a warm weather location, that has good grape ripeness which delivers high quality wines.

If we speak of tradition, this place is by far the one with the greatest national wine heritage. Visitar Lapostolle es hacer un viaje sorprendente. La bodega, Clos de Apalta, inaugurada en 2006 es una construcción que forma una elipse de 6 pisos de profundidad. Es aquí donde se fermentan las uvas que luego bajan por gravedad a las barricas de roble para su guarda y proceso de ensamblaje. El proceso se completa en el sexto subterráneo, donde finalmente se embotella el Clos de Apalta, uno de los mejores vinos que se ha producido en la historia vitivinícola de Chile.

VIÑA LAPOSTOLLE

At this winery you will discover the beautiful scenery of the Lolol Valley, one of the most outstanding and traditional wine production areas. This place invites you to learn about the beginnings and origins of Chilean wine making, by getting to know the winery and sampling its exquisite wines. You will also have the opportunity to make it to the top of the Chaman hill aboard a picturesque gondola, which provides a spectacular view of the vineyard. Here you see an astronomical observatory, as well as recreations of Mapuche, Rapa Nui and Aymara villages.

Visiting Lapostolle is an extraordinary journey. The Clos de Apalta cellar, which was inaugurated in 2006, is an ellipse shaped construction 6 stories deep. This is where the grapes are fermented and later descend by gravity, into the oak barrels for their ageing and blending. The process is completed in the sixth basement, where Clos de Apalta, one of the best wines ever produced in the Chilean winemaking history, is finally bottled.

LA PARVA

Ubicado a 39 kilómetros de Santiago, El Colorado cuenta con 112 pistas de esquí y es el centro invernal más grande de Chile. Está interconectado por dos aldeas, ambas con pequeños hoteles, departamentos y refugios que dan alojamiento durante todo el invierno. También tiene servicio de pubs y restoranes, ideales para pasar la noche después de un día intenso de deporte. En verano, el lugar se llena de panoramas para disfrutar de jornadas outdoor, donde se practican actividades como canopy, cabalgatas y juegos al aire libre, entre otras.

EL COLORADO

A 164 kilómetros de Santiago, se encuentra escondido entre las imponentes montañas uno de los centros de esquí más antiguos de Chile. Portillo, lugar en que se realizó el Campeonato Mundial de Esquí Alpino en1966, hoy mantiene un ambiente relajado durante todo el año, que se presta para hacer nuevos amigos y pasar un tiempo en calma. En invierno, en general no hay filas para subirse al andarivel ni se atesta de gente en las 34 pistas de esquí que rodean la hermosa Laguna del Inca. En verano las actividades relajadas y al aire libre dominan el lugar.

PORTILLO

Just 50 kilometers away from Santiago is La Parva, place which receives the greatest amount of overnight stays in the winter season, due to the vast supply of mountain houses and apartments. This area, which offers a beautiful view of the Santiago valley, has 30 ski trails just perfect to be used in winter. In summer, this area continues full of activities, that include cycling routes or trail running courses, which allow you to tour the beautiful paths of the mountain range.

Located 39 kilometers from Santiago, El Colorado has 112 ski trails and is the largest ski resort in Chile. It is interconnected by two villages, both with small hotels, apartments and mountain homes, which provide accommodation all winter long. There also are pubs and restaurants, ideal for spending a night out after an intense day of sports. In summer, the place fills with activities to enjoy outdoor days, such as canopy, horseback riding and open air games, among others.

At 164 kilometers from Santiago, hidden among the towering mountains is one of the oldest ski resorts in Chile. Portillo, place where the World Alpine Ski Championship of 1966 was held, today it maintains a relaxed atmosphere all year round, which makes it a great place to meet new friends and spend some quiet time. In winter, there generally are no lines at the ski lifts or overcrowding on its 34 trails, which surround the beautiful Laguna Del Inca. In summer, relaxed and outdoor activities take place.

En 1932 y gracias a la pasión de los integrantes del Ski Club Chile, se descubrió Farellones. Este lugar ubicado a 32 kilómetros de Santiago, guarda entre sus colinas una historia de esfuerzo de pioneros que formaron lo que hoy es uno de los centros más populares para practicar deportes de invierno, con sus 11 pistas de esquí; y de verano con su “Parque de Montaña”, lugar creado recientemente que ofrece todo tipo de actividades al aire libre incluyendo el entretenido Tubing Splash que permite deslizarse por pistas de agua con 250 metros de largo.

FARELLONES

In 1932 and thanks to the passion of the members of the Ski Club Chile, Farellones was discovered. This place located 32 kilometers from Santiago, keeps within its hills a story of pioneering effort which shaped what today is one of the most popular centers for practicing winter sports, with its 11 ski trails; and in summer with its “Parque de Montaña” (Mountain Park), recently built area which offers all sorts of outdoor activities, including the fun Tubing Splash, which enables you to slide down water runs 250 meters long.

El mar siempre ha sido una parte fundamental de la historia y de la vida en Chile, especialmente considerando su angosta y larga franja de territorio con sus aproximadamente 4.200 kilómetros de costa. En 1945, después de una intensiva remodelación, la casa tomó finalmente su singular forma, con una torre en el acceso, una chimenea y un gran ventanal mirando el mar. En ella se exhiben muchos objetos que el poeta recolectó en su vida destacando las colecciones de botellas, mascarones de proa, caracolas y las máscaras orientales, africanas y pascuenses.La rusticidad de esta y las demás casas del sector, encajan a la perfección con la basta vegetación del borde costero y el oleaje bravío de sus playas: Las Conchitas, Pablo Neruda y Las Ágatas. Aquí, es posible caminar admirando el paisaje imponente y su espectacular tranquilidad.

ISLA NEGRA

Located in the Region of Valparaiso, the small town of Isla Negra owes its name to famous poet Pablo Neruda, who christened the area when he saw a black rock in the sea. It is here where this Nobel Prize winner chose to have his most famous home; today the artist’s and wife Matilde’s mausoleum. In 1945 after extensive remodeling, the house finally adopted its singular shape, with a tower at its entrance, a fireplace and a window facing the sea. There are on display many objects the poet gathered throughout his life; worth mentioning are the bottle, figureheads, and shell collections, and the Oriental, African and Easter Island masks.The rural character of this and other houses of the area, fit perfectly with the vast shoreline vegetation and the strong waves of its beaches: Las Conchitas, Pablo Neruda and Las Agatas. Here it is possible to walk admiring the impressive scenery and its amazing calmness.

CACHAGUA, MAITENCILLO & ZAPALLAR
