riday October 19th presents DC area residents with an intriguing chance to witness a style clash between two respective masters of their genres. C.O.C Productions presents Bachata vs. Salsa with Luis Miguel del Amargue (representing bachata) and Eddie Santiago (the salsa side of things). Of course, this is not actually a musical showdown or competition

a la rap freestyle battles, but rather an example of how the distantly related but culturally intertwined styles of bachata and salsa complement each other. This is also a chance to catch some wonderful music.

Eddie Santiago:From 1986 to 1991 every album (six total including

his debut record Atrevido y Diferente) Eddie Santiago released went to number one on the Billboard US tropical charts. Santiago’s voice, talent and ability to plumb vast emotional depths for universal effect mark him as the inheritor to Hector Lavoe’s musical legacy.

Born Eduardo Santiago Rodriguez in Alta, Puerto Rico, the fifty-seven year old Santiago’s salsa romantica career has spanned 30 years, 17 albums and collaborations with some of the most respected luminaries in salsa and merengue (including Victor Manuelle, Huey Dunbar, Elvis Crespo). A salsa fanatic from a young age, Eddie began his career in several “orquestas” including Generacion 2000, Orquesta Opus and Orquesta La Potente. Eventually his solo work took off in Latin America and Puerto Rico leading to his commercially dominant stretch in the eighties. In 1999, Santiago released Celebracion: Epic Duets, his first major international label record.

His latest release came in 2006 with “En Su Estilo…Romantico y Sensual”. A title reflecting Santiago’s aesthetic aims at stylishness, feeling and transcendent desire. Key singles are: Lluvia, Black is Black, Que Locura Enamorarme De Ti.

Luis Miguel del Amargue:Dominican Luis Miguel del Amargue enjoyed an

orthodox but ultimately successful career trajectory as a bachata singer. Amargue was a successful recording artist in Spain for a decade beginning in the 90’s before he found American recognition through the release of his compilation album, “Mis Canciones” in 2009.

Del Amargue’s debut (featuring bachata AND merengue tracks) Amor de Una Noche was released in 1998 through Chaira Records. Although not particularly well received in the United States and Puerto Rico, Del Amargue experienced some success in Spain and was offered a recording contract with JM Records. This led to the release of 1999’s Luisa Maria, Te Echo De Menos in 2000, Quiero Amanecer Contigo (2001) and Amor de Locos in 2003. Del Amargue’s albums did well in Spain and led to subsequent releases including (among others) Quiero Saber in 2005 and De Rodillas Te Pido in 2008 whose title track was especially popular. During this time Del Amargue had been gradually phasing the merengue stylings out of his repertoire to focus primarily on bachata.

The growth of bachata’s popularity in the United States primed the artist for a breakthrough into the American landscape. “Mi Regreso” was released in the United States in the summer of 2009 and was followed

soon after by a greatest hits compilation, Mis Canciones. Key singles are: Se Acabo Lo Bonito, De Rodillas Te Pido, Abrazame Amor.

This month we had a chance to talk to Peruvian singer-songwriter and two-time Latin Grammy winner, Gianmarco. Gianmarco gave us a glimpse into his thoughts as he welcomes the 20th year of his successful career. He told us how he is reminded of his beginnings and told us what he thinks about his upcoming concert on October 5th at The Howard Theater. Oh, and he might also be packing Pisco for the trip.

KM: When you think about your beginnings as an artist, do you think there’s a specific moment that launched your success?

GM: Definitely it was the song “Cancion de Amor” in 1993. I think that “Cancion de Amor” set me on a path as a singer-songwriter. Since then, we (his team) started on this path. After that, the third album was a consolidation of me as a singer-songwriter with songs like “Parte de Este Juego”. What helped me a lot, was the Peruvian people. People that went to other countries and passed around my CD’s to people from other countries. They helped me to become known in other places by word of mouth rather than using the international media.

KM: What can you tell us about your new double album “20 Años”?

GM: That it was hard work, because re-recording songs from when I was 20 years old, now that I’m 42, is different. It’s always difficult to reinvent yourself. There’s people that have stayed with you, others that did not, there are new generations that are just getting to know you. Thinking of those people, I think that it worked very well. I’m very happy with this album.

I’m always impressed to see how the people that go to my concerts keep changing. I have people that are 14 years old that are just starting to listen to my music, but I also have people my age that have been following me since the beginning. Now I have a teenage daughter, and some of her friends also listen to my music. I have always done what comes from my heart, without trying to follow whats trending, and at

least in Peru it’s been three generations that have listened and still listen to us.

KM: If you could just pick three of your songs to listen to for the rest of your life, which ones would they be?

GM: Definitely “Sentirme Vivo” is a song that I can’t leave behind. It gave me more possibilities as a composer, possibilities to reach other countries as a composer. I would also have to pick “Hoy” and “Retrato” which is about myself.

KM: You are a very successful composer that has helped many artists with your songs, but as the singer that you also are, don’t you feel regret sometimes at having to give up some of those songs that you may think are too good? Don’t you ever want them for yourself?

GM: No because there’s a bit of detachment that I have, as a result of being a composer. It doesn’t hurt me, to the contrary. In the end, the ones who keep the songs are the people.

KM: What was the difference between winning your first and second Grammy?

GM: The surprise is always the same, because you DO get surprised! I go back to thinking about the beginning, again I think of Barranco, the “Canta y Gana”. Having been there with my wife and my son was wonderful. Being nominated or winning a Grammy gives you exposure, exposure of your work, which in the end is what every artist wants.

KM: I’ve heard that you’ve received an award for composing many songs that reached the Top 10 of the Latin Billboard chart. What do you think marks the difference in the songs that you compose?

GM: Uy... si supiera el codigo! (laughter).... I think it’s about having a certain style. I think that it’s a style that is liked by certain people. I don’t try to be liked by everybody, I don’t think I’m liked by everybody. If my songs have been successful, it’s because of many factors... because of the producer, the arrangements, the interpreter, there are

many people involved behind the success of a song and in the end, it also depends on the public.

KM: Related to your upcoming show in Washington DC... What do you remember most when you visit our area?

GM: It’s a very special city. I’ve had the opportunity to sing at the White House twice. I consider the public in Washington to be very fun, very entertaining, like they were last year at The State Theater.

KM: I have a few questions that were sent to me by your fans in D.C. Are you up for answering them?

GM: (laughter).... yes of course!

KM: From Joanna Jimenez ( VA): What do you feel when the girls go crazy with your songs?

GM: (Laughter) Really, I feel tenderness. I never became a musician to be famous. That part of it, the screams, the flirting... it’s part of what comes with success as an artist. But I don’t only sing for the girls, I sing for whoever wants to listen. What I feel is happiness to know how my music makes them feel.

KM: From Patty Vasquez (MD): How do you do to get inspired to write so many songs?

GM: It’s from having lived many things. Being very observant. Having a great capacity to synthesize, to fit into 3 or 4 minutes, a feeling or an experience. It’s a gift, I consider it a gift from God. It’s magical that in 3 or 4 hours a blank sheet of paper transforms into a song that never existed before.

KM: From Moises Rojas ( VA): What goals do you have left to accomplish personally and professionally?

GM: To keep being a

good father, a good husband, to learn from my mistakes. What everybody wants. Professionally, I would like to be a producer to new talents, new people. I would like to do that in the future, as right now I’m completely focused on being a singer-songwriter. I would like to find a new artist with a good-natured thirst for success. Someone with a vision towards the future, with a work habit and patience, not somebody looking for instant fame.

KM: From Martin Denegri ( VA): Why didn’t you pick heavy metal?

GM: Because you have to know how to sing it! (laughs) It’s one thing to like it, it’s another thing being able to sing it. I can’t emulate Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath. It can’t be done if it’s not the type of voice one has. No matter how much I would like to rock out like the Sex Pistols or Metallica... El zapatero a su zapato.

KM: From Humberto Mujica (MD): Gianmarco, can you bring me a

bottle of Pisco from Peru?

GM: Of course! (laughs) If they let me bring it on the

plane, there’s no problem! (laughs)

KM: Before you go.... when you come here to D.C. this October 5th, you will be playing at The Howard Theater. The Howard Theater is a legendary stage in

Washington, and quality wise, probably the best in the

city at the moment. What do you have in store for this concert?

GM: We have always tried to grow little by little. We have always found different places, different venues. We have been climbing up, if one can put it that way. What people are going to see, is a recap of my 20 year career through a two hour performance. My intent is that the people come out happy from the show... Pasarla bien! Gladly, Washington has always received me well.

Uruguayan Luciano Supervielle on piano, keyboards and scratch. This collective of 8 musicians has toured constantly since its founding and recording of their first album in 2002. The album, Bajofondo Tango Club, received much accolade in Argentina and Uruguay and received a Latin Grammy award in 2003 for “Best Instrumental Pop Album”, and sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide.

The group then developed and released Supervielle in 2004, a solo work of the band’s youngest member Luciano Supervielle, produced by Santaolalla and Campodónico and presented by Bajofondo Tango Club. Later, in 2005, the group released a combination audio and visual remix album Bajofondo Tango Club Remixed, in which both Verónica Loza and Juan Campodónico collaborate to develop along with Martin Ferres to reinterpret the first albums’ songs in remixes by European, Uruguayan and Argentine DJs in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Cordoba, Paris and New York.

As a result of the constant touring in festivals and venues around the world, including two previous tours of the United States, the group has changed their sound and evolved their

vision to become less studio-based and focused more on performance and immediacy, adding even more elements of a broader spectrum

he sounds produced by the collective of musicians known as Bajofondo is a delight to the ears: the melody of tango, milonga, and other traditional rhythms, mixed with expert precision to the beats of modern sounds creates a mixture that is exciting to hear and oozes musicianship.

Bajofondo is comprised of its founders, composer sand musicians Gustavo Santaolalla and Juan Campodónico, one Argentinean, the other Uruguayan respectively. Santaolalla is most known for his award winning soundtrack and score work for movies such as Brokeback Mountain, Babel, Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and the Motorcycle Diaries, in addition to his work as a producer for such artists as Juanes, Julieta Venegas, Molotov, Café Tacuba, and others.

The brainchild of Santaolalla y Campodónico, the project started as Bajofondo Tango Club. Meant to be a studio-based endeavor that wished to capture the urban rioplatense (name for the body of water separating Argentina and Uruguay, La Plata River, or “Rio de la Plata” in Spanish) musical essence by creating music mixing everything that binds the region musically including not only traditional sounds like tango, but hip hop, rock, and electronica, among others.

This bi-national ensemble’s line-up includes in addition to its founders, Argentines Javier Casalla on violin, bandeonist Martín Ferrés, and drummer Adrián Sosa along with Uruguayan bassists Gabriel Casacuberta, VJ and vocalist Verónica Loza, as well as, French-

of Latin American musical roots, moving beyond tango. Noting this change, it was the decision of the group to now simply perform under the name Bajofondo. Under this new direction, Bajofondo released their second album, Mar Dulce, in 2007 and rereleased in 2008.

Mar Dulce marks a clear difference in the collective’s work. Recorded and mixed in six different cities (Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Madrid, Montevideo, Los Angeles and New York), the album was recorded in real-time performances, much like a jazz ensemble and the variety of locations clearly reflects upon the music. Furthermore, the variety of guest artists displays the cosmopolitan nature of the recording. Some guests include British singer and composer Elvis Costello, Canadian singer Nelly Furtado, Spanish rapper Mala Rodríguez, virtuoso Japanese bandoneon player Ryota Komatsu and several Rio de la Plata artists whose origins cover the entire gamut from traditional to vanguard, including Argentinean Gustavo Cerati, former lead singer of Soda Stereo, and the late great Uruguayan singer, Lagrima Rios.

Bajofondo will be visiting the Washington DC area on October 9 at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue at

omething spectacular is coming to the Warner Theater in Washington, DC on October 15, 2012 ... Stars, Stripes & Salsa! This is guaranteed to be a night to remember as this benefit concert promises a one-of-a-kind experience featuring Gilberto Santa Rosa and Tito

Puente Jr. in conjunction with Stars, Stripes & Hearts, Inc., PWC, Soldiers Project and Thank USA. The event will be hosted by Jim Byer and Nancy Alonso of WPFW 89.3 FM. The Warner Theater holds about 1,800 and they want this venue packed!

There’s no better excuse to splurge on a music packed, fun filled, salsa pounding than by dancing the night away with amazing performing artists in concert while a portion of the proceeds go to support our Latino soldiers on the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month. Stars, Stripes & Hearts/Bandera y Corazones, according to their website, is a national nonprofit whose, “Funds raised support charities that provide culturally competent, evidence-based mental health programs for Hispanic Latino military service members affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), severe depression and other invisible wounds of war.” This is their first event (of many more to come hopefully) to raise awareness as a nonprofit, “that gives voice to the healing power of music through benefit concerts.”

I had the privilege of speaking with Natischa Shaver, who works with Stars, Stripes & Hearts founder Lynette Stano. Shaver praised Stano and her strives to developing a truly unique and innovative nonprofit that has a focus on Latino American soldiers. She emphasized that there are a few reasons that make Stars, Stripes & Hearts really stand out, stating that it is a 3-fold organization. Shaver explained that first, “Not one single organization focuses specifically on Latinos in our military which is largely composed of Latino Americans. Really reaching out to those families to

cross that language barrier is essential.” Secondly, Shaver continued that, “we are really an incentive and platform for other organizations.” Stars, Stripes & Salsa encourages other nonprofits to raise awareness and money for PTSD, TBI and Hispanic Latino soldiers. Lastly Shaver states, “We are using music to raise the money. It’s a unique nonprofit in the sense that we believe in the healing power of music. We are reaching out to artists to promote and this raises more awareness in the community.”

Aside from the amazing performers of the night, a huge highlight will be the recognition of 81 year-old Rodolfo Hernandez, a Korean War veteran. There will also be more than 40 recipients of the Medal of Honor in attendance. In addition, the campaign, “Help Sponsor a Soldier” has a program set up so that individuals can purchase tickets to allow a soldier to go to this concert which is another great way to show support for American soldiers and belief in the healing power of music for minds and hearts. If the music doesn’t touch your heart and soul, seeing these veterans of war should as they have placed their lives in harm’s way in order to ensure a safe life and future for all Americans.

According to Shaver, “Music is a healing process and it’s therapeutic. When these soldiers come back from war they may have TBI and PTSD and the healing power of music plays an essential role in overcoming these scars of war.” Believe in the healing power of music and show your support for our American soldiers by attending a benefit concert that helps raise money for our Hispanic Latino military service members.

hase II as a title is both forward looking as well as a nod to the past. Prince Royce announces his progression, while also indicating that it’s just another stop on the way. At only 23 years old, his music is both heritage and hope. Heritage and Hope: How else could one summarize the

significance of Royce’s magnificent bachata cover of Ben E. King’s classic “Stand By Me”?

Embracing his teen idol role in a classic, profound way, Prince Royce positioned himself as the object and conduit of dreams, aspirations and redemption in a way even the original (Ben E. King) and throwbacks ( John Lennon) couldn’t muster. Royce’s 2010 version of “Stand By Me” passed on the soulful, spiritual reassurance of Ben E. King’s original to teens and young people who experienced it for the first time through star dazzled eyes and hearts.

Born on May 11, 1989, Geoffrey Royce Rojas was raised in the Bronx by Dominican parents (his father drove a taxi and his mother worked at beauty salon). Royce sung in the choir at school and wrote poetry which eventually turned into songwriting. His first forays into music were

with musical partner Jose Chusan as Jino and Royce, El Duo Real. After being introduced to manager and producer Andres Hidalgo, Royce was signed to Sergio George’s Top Stop music label and released his self-titled studio debut in March of 2010. The success of debut single “Stand By Me” was followed by the album’s second single, “Corazon Sin Cara” going to number one on both the US Hot Latin Songs and Tropical Songs charts. In 2011 Prince Royce collaborated with Daddy Yankee on the hit single Ven Conmigo for DY’s 2012 album Prestige.

On 2012’s Phase II, youthful Prince Royce continues

in service of art’s healing, reassuring quality. The album’s prelude features Royce and guest La Bruja in a spoken word evocation of the album’s purpose: “You are now entering the kingdom of Prince Royce/ Who Before he was royalty was one lonely voice…Son las cosas pequeñas que valen y enseñan/ Y donde esta el corazon es donde sera mi habitation…your faith keeps your dreams close to you…”

head/ A part of me is a mess…”). The level of sincerity in Royce’s poetic lyrics is uncommon in music today (though less so in Latin pop). In our cynical age, one might lean toward dismissing Prince Royce’s work as craven exploitation of the naiveté of a bubblegum audience, but the polish of his work only serves to enhance the depth of feeling in his voice. The pop-- with Royce bachata is definitely pop now!-- craft on songs like Phase II’s first single Las Cosas Pequeñas and Eres Tu are the foundations for Royce’s gentle lyrical insights. On Memorias, bachata rhythms and orchestral strings ignite Royce’s lyrics as he sings “Tu voz sutil/ Verte dormir/ Nunca podre olvidarte/ Nunca pense/ Que iba a perder/ Lo que vivimos tu y yo…” Teen idol Royce fulfills a man’s promise to stand by his audience.

to their home state of Texas and recorded their debut album, ‘Los Lonely Boys.’ This album contained the track titled ‘Heaven’ which was the group’s first hit on the Billboard Charts at number 16. ‘Heaven’ won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance and was included in the music video game ‘Guitar Hero.’

Aside from music, the band is also known for their philanthropy. In 2007, Los Lonely Boys participated in the ‘Make Some Noise’ project which promotes human rights with a focus on the Darfur crisis in Sudan. The group composed a cover of John Lennon’s hit song ‘Whatever Gets You Through the Night’ for the ‘Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur’ compilation album. Proceeds of the album were given to human rights campaigns. Los Lonely Boys also supports other organizations such as Padres Con El Cáncer, Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas, the Milagro Foundation,

or nearly two decades, the Garza brothers, notably known as Los Lonely Boys, have been delivering an array of

Tex-Mex/Chicano rock music to audiences all over the nation. The San Angelo, Texas band is made up of Henry Garza, vocalist and guitarist, JoJo Garza, bassist and backing vocals, and Ringo Garza, percussionist and backing vocals. Their latest album release titled ‘Rockpango’ has earned them a coveted spot in the US Top 20 music charts and is sure to satisfy the ears of Los Lonely Boys fans.

“I’m super proud of it,” said JoJo Garza about the album. “It’s just progress, maturation and growth. Growing up, being older, seeing the world we’re living in. It’s also touching base with home.”

Los Lonely Boys first appeared in the music scene in Nashville, Tennessee in the mid-1990s. The brothers then moved back

the Children’s Miracle Network, and the National Wildlife Federation.

In 2008, Los Lonely Boys released their third studio album titled ‘Forgiven.’ By now, the band was notable enough to be asked to perform the National Anthem at the second game of the 2008 World Series in Saint Petersburg, Florida. In March 2010, Los Lonely Boys were honored as ‘Best Rock Band’ at the Austin Music Awards.

After completing a 200 show tour from 2009-2010, Los Lonely Boys recorded ‘Rockpango,’ a Spanglish word defined as ‘rocky party.’ ‘Rockpango’ contains a new style than the previous albums by Los Lonely Boys, but is still an album worth listening to by music lovers.

“It was just time to grow and change,” said JoJo Garza on the composition of ‘Rockpango.’ “But not change too much. It’s kind of like a tree. A tree doesn’t

actually change as much as it grows. It gets taller, grows more branches, and gets thicker and stronger. I think it’s one of our best if not our best. We took the ball and I think we scored a touchdown.”

The band has certainly come a long way since their early days, but the members have stayed true to their roots. “We’re still Lonely Boys,” JoJo Garza said. “We’re still family, we’re still three brothers, we’re still doing what the good Lord has blessed us with, and that’s singing and playing for people who really want to listen.”

Los Lonely Boys are currently on tour and will be performing at the Howard Theatre on Saturday, October 13. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 on the day of the concert. Eddie Santiago:From 1986 to 1991 every album (six total including

his debut record Atrevido y Diferente) Eddie Santiago released went to number one on the Billboard US tropical charts. Santiago’s voice, talent and ability to plumb vast emotional depths for universal effect mark him as the inheritor to Hector Lavoe’s musical legacy.

Born Eduardo Santiago Rodriguez in Alta, Puerto Rico, the fifty-seven year old Santiago’s salsa romantica career has spanned 30 years, 17 albums and collaborations with some of the most respected luminaries in salsa and merengue (including Victor Manuelle, Huey Dunbar, Elvis Crespo). A salsa fanatic from a young age, Eddie began his career in several “orquestas” including Generacion 2000, Orquesta Opus and Orquesta La Potente. Eventually his solo work took off in Latin America and Puerto Rico leading to his commercially dominant stretch in the eighties. In 1999, Santiago released Celebracion: Epic Duets, his first major international label record.

His latest release came in 2006 with “En Su Estilo…Romantico y Sensual”. A title reflecting Santiago’s aesthetic aims at stylishness, feeling and transcendent desire. Key singles are: Lluvia, Black is Black, Que Locura Enamorarme De Ti.

Luis Miguel del Amargue:Dominican Luis Miguel del Amargue enjoyed an

orthodox but ultimately successful career trajectory as a bachata singer. Amargue was a successful recording artist in Spain for a decade beginning in the 90’s before he found American recognition through the release of his compilation album, “Mis Canciones” in 2009.

Del Amargue’s debut (featuring bachata AND merengue tracks) Amor de Una Noche was released in 1998 through Chaira Records. Although not particularly well received in the United States and Puerto Rico, Del Amargue experienced some success in Spain and was offered a recording contract with JM Records. This led to the release of 1999’s Luisa Maria, Te Echo De Menos in 2000, Quiero Amanecer Contigo (2001) and Amor de Locos in 2003. Del Amargue’s albums did well in Spain and led to subsequent releases including (among others) Quiero Saber in 2005 and De Rodillas Te Pido in 2008 whose title track was especially popular. During this time Del Amargue had been gradually phasing the merengue stylings out of his repertoire to focus primarily on bachata.

The growth of bachata’s popularity in the United States primed the artist for a breakthrough into the American landscape. “Mi Regreso” was released in the United States in the summer of 2009 and was followed

soon after by a greatest hits compilation, Mis Canciones. Key singles are: Se Acabo Lo Bonito, De Rodillas Te Pido, Abrazame Amor.

Throughout the years, David Bisbal has grown as a performer. He is regarded as a powerhouse voice within the current Latin Pop genre. Reminiscent of icons like Julio Iglesias and Luis Miguel, and of the electricity they generated with thousands of fans (largely female, let’s face it he is very easy on the eyes) David has managed to grow and develop a stage persona that is able to connect deep within the

listener’s core. More than a singer, he is an interpreter; a skill that in today’s current music panorama, seems to have been lost in favor of auto-tune technology and overnight YouTube sensations. To perform a song is no easy task, but to be able to interpret

Chef Oriol hails from Barcelona and is a seasoned chef that has traveled extensively through Europe studying the cuisine and now bringing his Spaniard flair to the American palate. His strive to continually grow and passion for simple yet memorable bites is what makes the dining experience at La Tasca a culinary experience.

Now, we can’t talk tapas without talking sangria. Did you know that La Tasca is responsible for legalizing Sangria in the state of Virginia? Old Town Alexandria managing Partner Shana McKillop, is responsible for getting legislature to update a law that was passed in 1934 after the national prohibition of alcohol was repealed. This law forbade restaurants and bars in Virginia to mix beer or wine with spirits. The serving of sangria -a mix of red wine and brandy- was considered illegal. After suffering a steep fine, McKillop felt it was in the best interest of patrons to stop serving sangria until this issue could be resolved and be able to offer diners this authentic Spanish classic. Thankfully, the law was amended and it is no longer illegal to serve sangria in the state of Virginia. La Tasca offers twelve sangria blends that are all unique and quite tasty. Just a few minutes after he said that, the manager of Alamo came and told us that the line outside was 4 blocks long and that the fire marshall was on his way to shut down the place. Just like that everything went from a successful event to madness, in just a few minutes the rumor about Alamo closing for the night spread and people outside started to get very upset and of course the ones inside trying to get to Enanito’s table

for pictures and autographs were even more upset.

When the band noticed this, they decided that it was time to go, and went straight to get to the exit door only to realize it was completely blocked and there was no room to move. So they decided to improvise and used a window! For some strange

reason the crowd outside never saw them coming out so the band safely got into the van and left, when finally I got myself out and as I was just standing there in the middle of the street surrounded by firefighters, police cars, and the promoters apologizing to people and I overheard some guys walking around and complaining about how they didn’t get their chance to see Enanitos Verdes in concert!

ust a couple of weeks ago Enanitos Verdes came to DC for a concert that was almost sold out at The Fillmore in Silver Spring. The popular Argentinean band have been visiting our area almost once a year since 1995 and as far as I remember this last show is one of their

best turn outs ever (almost 2000 people). Now the funny and interesting thing about this cronica is that Enanitos had a really amazing turn out of fans but for something that was not a concert!!

This happened about 12 years ago, long before Facebook or Twitter or KestaDC could send you invites that laid out all concert details in black and white for you to conveniently “join” the event. Back then just a simple rumor could turn out to be a big headache for popular arists like this Argentinean trio. So the actual concert was going to happen at Nation, one of DC’s best venues back in those days and originally was scheduled to happen on a Saturday, however, a last minute change ended up moving the show to Sunday. Little did they know that craziness would follow.

When a group of promoters from Alamo Grill in Georgetown found out that Enanitos was going to be in DC for an extra day, they seized the opportunity and decided to offer the band the chance to come around for a couple of hours and give autographs, take some pictures with fans, have some drinks and enjoy their day off. Enanito’s manager only asked that the promoters let the fans know that this was not going to be the actual concert so nobody would get confused.

I also remember getting a phone call from the manager of Alamo and he mentioned that he had a “weird feeling” about the situation so he suggested that Enanitos should come to the party earlier than it was announced so that way they were going to be seated comfortably and near an exit

door just in case they wanted to leave early.So when Enanitos arrived everything appeared normal,

they where not even recognized by the few people who where enjoying dinner at that time at the restaurant so it just looked like it was going to be a great meet and greet party. Everything was going great, the staff at Alamo started to set up the place for what was their most popular dancing night. The first sight of trouble was that there was heavy traffic in front of Alamo. This was unusual for that time of night, however, there was still no reason for alarm and the the promoters and DJ decided to get the party going early just in case some early bird fans showed up to the meet-and-greet. Then the main promoter came to Enanito’s table to let them know that they were ready to open doors and get ready for their fans also he mentioned that they were excited that there was already a line of people outside, he just forgot to tell them a small detail, the line was more than 500 people and this was only 11pm!

By midnight Alamo was at full capacity, it was just insane to try to move around, somehow Enanito’s manager made it through the crowd and got out for some fresh air. When he came back he said something that worried all of us : “I don’t know about this place’s regular turn out on Saturdays but it looks like there are lots of people outside waiting to

That’s when you have something as terrible as a “stroke,” everyone around you that loves you suffers the same “stroke” right along with you,” said Maldonado.

Sometimes heart disease can also affect children indirectly, such as Elda Devarie (president at EMD SALES, INC.) who at seven years old, witnessed her father being taken in an ambulance, and later be diagnosed with “Pericarditis” or enlargement of the membrane around his heart. Elda’s mother was expecting a baby, and the whole family was scared, “My little sisters were so afraid, and so was I,” she said. “For many years he was considered a heart patient, but with regular check-ups, a healthy diet and exercise our Dad is now a healthy 75-year-old Grandfather or “Abuelo”, like we say in Spanish. Thanks to

medication, good quality health care, changes in lifestyle and science my Dad got a second chance at life and with him all of us,” Elda adds.

In the 2010-11 American Heart Association fiscal year, over $110.9 million, was raised and invested in new research with distinguished cardiovascular scientists

This event like so many others lets us (the Stroke Survivors and the Heart Attack Survivors alike) know that ‘We truly are not alone.’ It shows us all the good people out there, strangers mostly, that are willing to take a little time out of their day to show their support because ‘our

cause’ is ‘their cause.’ And that we’re truly in this struggle together,” said José Maldonado who suffered a terrible stroke over 9 years ago that left him in a wheel chair. Today, Maldonado is enjoying the simple things in life with his family and friends by his side supporting him through a fortunate recovery. Maldonado will be participating in this year’s Heart Walk as well.

The software engineer says that he remembers how he felt back then, and how desperate he was to do something as simple as walk. “Now I walk with a heavy limp, but I participate in these events because I can walk and I know just how lucky I am. I walk on behalf of all those stroke survivors who can’t. I walk with all those caregivers who are walking for us,” Maldonado added.

The work done has made an impact in many people’s lives by improving patient care, advocating for better health, reaching out to populations at risk, educating Americans

and raising awareness. The money raised goes into research to increase awareness of the risks of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. However, there is still much more work to do to create awareness, and according to Hoveyda research shows that 80 percent of cardiac events could be prevented if people make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.

“Walking for as little as 30 minutes a day will help people improve their circulation; reduce stress and anxiety; increase enthusiasm and optimism; improve muscle tone and strength; lower cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure; and promote weight loss. Walking has the lowest drop-out rate, it is low impact on the body, and it is so easy to incorporate into your day! Park farther away, take walk breaks, take the stairs instead of the elevator,” added Hoveyda.

at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia, will

Rockin’ Ever After is a special show surrounding the princesses, but it is not a girls only event, boys will enjoy too because the musical features Sebastian and the Daughters of Triton, the rowdy pub thugs from Tangled and the crazy enchanted servants from Beauty and the Beast.

Sebastian from the Little Mermaid will be breaking out of his shell, in a special performance for the youngest princess of the ocean, Ariel. Rapunzel and friends will visit the ice with charm unleashing its musical mayhem. While the Beast will take over the stage to rock the house for Belle.

The audience will also sing and dance along with a group of royal contenders who will compete to win Merida’s heart, the strong and sharp-shooting princess from Brave.

It is Merida’s debut on ice, and Mark Andrews, the Brave’s film director say “It is such a visual story, very iconic, the

image that evokes, translate great into a big theatrical piece on ice.”
