El Oratorio Nuestra Señora de la Asunción y Panteón Nacional

de los Héroes es un edificio de estilo neoclásico, ubicado en

uno de los puntos neurálgicos del casco histórico de la ciudad.

Considerado uno de los grandes tesoros arquitectónicos

del país, conserva en su interior el oratorio a la Virgen de la

Asunción, así como los restos de algunos héroes de la historia

del Paraguay. Esta postal asuncena es, además, epicentro de

celebraciones, y escenario de manifestaciones sociales.

The Our Lady of the Assumption Chapel and National Pantheon

of the Heroes is a neoclassical style building located in one of

the focal points of the old town area of the city. Considered one

of the greatest architectural treasures of the country, it houses

the Chapel of the Virgin of the Assumption, as well as the

remains of some of the heroes of the history of Paraguay. This

beautiful site is also the gathering place for celebrations and

the scene of social demonstrations.

Situado en la intersección de las calles Palma y Chile del centro asunceno, este edificio de gran valor histórico y urbanístico forma parte de la identidad de Asunción y de sus habitantes. Su construcción fue iniciada en 1864, a pedido del Mariscal Francisco Solano López, e interrumpida tras el inicio de la Guerra contra la Triple Alianza (1864-1870). A consecuencia de ello, estuvo postergada durante 72 años y fue culminada recién en 1972, tras la Guerra del Chaco.

Inspirada en el complejo Les Invalides, de París, fue diseñada por el arquitecto italiano Alejandro Ravizza, bajo cuya dirección fueron levantados además, otros monumentales edificios públicos de la época, todos ellos de innegable estilo italiano.

Alberga en su interior los restos mortales de algunos héroes de la historia paraguaya. Entre ellos se encuentran Don Carlos Antonio López (Primer Presidente Constitucional), el Mariscal Francisco Solano López (héroe de la guerra contra la Triple Alianza) y el Mariscal José Félix Estigarribia (héroe de la Guerra del Chaco). Además reposan allí los Niños Mártires de Acosta Ñu (niños soldados durante la Guerra contra la Triple Alianza), el ex presidente Eligio Ayala, y el poeta y compositor Emiliano R. Fernández.

En el año 2009, el Panteón Nacional de los Héroes fue seleccionado como uno de los Siete Tesoros del Patrimonio Cultural Material de Asunción. Recibió esta distinción, en el marco del certamen promovido por la Organización Capital Americana de la Cultura.

En 2011, año del Bicentenario de la Independencia paraguaya, el edificio fue totalmente restaurado. No solo retomó su color original, sino que adquirió un grado de belleza inusitada. Sus pisos de granito fueron recompuestos y el interior de la bóveda y sus vitrales, iluminados con los colores de la bandera: rojo, blanco y azul.

Cada 1° de marzo, fecha en que se recuerda el Día de los Héroes en honor a Francisco Solano López, muerto al finalizar la Guerra contra la Triple Alianza en 1970, la fachada del Panteón es escenario de un acto presidido por el Presidente de la República, al que asisten además representantes de las Fuerzas Armadas y del Congreso Nacional entre otras autoridades.

Pero más allá de los actos oficiales, el Panteón constituye el principal escenario de las celebraciones civiles, así como de las más variadas manifestaciones sociales. Las victorias de la selección paraguaya de fútbol, y las acciones de grupos y movimientos sociales son celebradas a sus puertas, ante la impasible mirada de los escoltas que la custodian.

Panteón Nacional de los Héroes

Located at the intersection of Palma and Chile streets in the downtown area of Asuncion, this building, of great historic value and a credit to urban develop-ment, is part of the identity of Asuncion and its inhabitants. Construction began in 1864 at the request of Mar-shal Francisco Solano Lopez, but was interrupted due to the outbreak of the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870). Due to this, construction was delayed for 72 years, and it was only comple-ted in 1972, after the Chaco War.

Modeled after Les Invalides in Paris, it was designed by the Italian architect Alejandro Ravizza, under whose direction several other public monuments of the time were built in an undeniably Italian style.

Inside lie the mortal remains of some of the heroes of Paraguayan history. Among them are Don Carlos Antonio Lopez (First Constitutional President), Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez (Hero of the War of the Triple Alliance) and Mar-shal Jose Felix Estigarribia (Hero of the Chaco War). Also there are the Children Martyrs of Acosta Ñu (child soldiers of the War of the Triple Alliance), the ex-president Eligio Ayala and the poet and composer Emiliano R. Fernandez.

In 2009 the National Pantheon of the Heroes was chosen as one of the Seven Treasures of the Cultural and Material

heritage of Asuncion. It received this distinction during an initiative promo-ted by the American Capital of Culture Organization, with Asuncion being na-med the Capital of Culture for that year.

In 2011, the Bicentenary year of the Independence of Paraguay, the building was totally restored. It not only recovered its original color, but it acquired an uncharacteristic beauty. Its granite floors were rebuilt and the interior of the vault and the stained-glass windows were illuminated with the colors of the flag: red, white and blue.

Heroes’ Day is celebrated every March 1st to commemorate Francisco Solano Lopez, who died at the end of the War of the Triple Alliance in 1970. The front of the Pantheon is the scene of an event presided over by the President of the Republic, which is attended by representatives from the Armed Forces and the National Congress, among other authorities.

Apart from official acts, the Pantheon also serves as the main stage for civil celebrations, as well as all kinds of social demonstrations. Celebrations of the victories of the Paraguayan Natio-nal Soccer Team and activities of social groups and movements are carried out at its doors, under the impassive gaze of the soldiers that guard it.

Convertida en museo y biblioteca, la antigua casa de José Asunción Flores, creador de la Guarania, está situada en Punta Karapa, un pintoresco sitio considerado uno de los más altos del barrio Chacarita.

Rohayhu Che Barrio (Quiero a mi barrio) es un proyecto de jornadas culturales en los barrios de Asunción que surge de la necesidad de apoyar a las manifestaciones culturales locales como fiestas patronales, festividades religiosas y festivales tradicionales. Este mes las de actividades se desarrollará en el Parque Carlos Antonio López.

Los paseos en tuku-tuku, una pintorescas lanchas con capacidad para albergar a 22 personas, son ideales para quienes disfrutan de los atardeceres y el río. Es posible pasear por la Bahía de Asunción o por el río Pilcomayo. El costo del tour por el río Paraguay, de una hora de duración, es de G. 10.000. Un viaje de dos horas por el Pilcomayo cuesta G. 20.000.

Quienes buscan descubrir nuevos cielos, podrán disfrutar de la magia del firmamento en el Planetario Padre Buenaventura Suárez, donde aprenderán además algunas nociones de la astronomía. El centro cuenta con un Planetario GOTO Ex3 con capacidad para 25 personas, una sala de proyección en 3D, y un espacio de vitrinas con fósiles, colección de meteoritos y maquetas de naves espaciales.

The trips on the traditional tuku-tuku, a picturesque motorboat with a capacity of 22 people, are ideal for those who want to enjoy the sunset and the river. Es la antigua sede del Cabildo y Parlamento Nacional, convertida en museo. Ofrece permanentes muestras de arte contemporáneo, de arte plumario y de fotografía. En sus salas de exposiciones temporales, auditorios y biblioteca, se desarrollan programas y proyectos culturales de difusión de las creaciones de artistas contemporáneos nacionales e internacionales.

Está situado en la Casa Viola, una de las nueve casas que conforman el Centro Cultural de la Ciudad Manzana de la Rivera. Exhibe elementos que reconstruyen parte de la historia de Asunción, como objetos arqueológicos, pinturas, elementos ornamentales y una serie de muebles. Alberga además libros y documentos históricos como mapas y cartas.

The former home of the City Council and National Parliament is now a museum. There are permanent displays of contemporary art, featherwork and photography. Its temporary exhibition halls, auditoriums and library, host cultural projects and programs which highlight the creations of national and international contemporary artists.

Located in Casa Viola, it is one of the nine houses that make up the Cultural Center of the City Manzana de la Rivera. It exhibits articles that reconstruct part of the history of Asuncion, such as archeological objects, paintings, ornamental objects and a selection of furniture. It also houses historic books and documents such as maps and letters.

Es el único centro cultural de Villa Morra, considerado el nuevo eje económico y financiero de la capital. Brinda espacio a disciplinas como pintura, grabado, dibujo, fotografía, cerámica, escultura, teatro y música. Realiza alrededor de cincuenta actividades culturales al año y recibe a 4.000 visitantes en promedio.

El Centro de Artes Visuales alberga al Museo del Barro, con más de 4.000 piezas correspondientes a producciones mestizas, desde el siglo XVII en adelante. Allí también se encuentra el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MPAC), con una colección permanente de pintura, dibujo, grabado, instalación, objeto y escultura actual del Paraguay; y el Museo de Arte Indígena (MAI), con más de 1750 piezas.

The only cultural center in Villa Morra, considered the new financial and economic hub of the capital. It features paintings, etchings, drawings, photographs, ceramics, sculptures, theater and music. Around fifty cultural activities take place every year and it receives an average of 4,000 visitors.

The Center of Visual Arts houses the Earthenware Museum, with over 4,000 pieces corresponding to mestizo creations, from the 17th century onwards. The Contemporary Arts Museum (MPAC) is also located here, boasting a permanent collection of paintings, drawings, etchings, facilities, objects and sculptures of Paraguay; and the Museum of Indigenous Arts (MAI), which has over 1,750 pieces.

Su colección permanente está compuesta de casi un centenar de imágenes religiosas paraguayas, correspondientes a los siglos XVII y XVIII. Cada una de ellas posee un incalculable valor artístico e histórico. El museo cuenta además con una vasta librería, una tienda de merchandising y un café bar.

Es un sitio de referencia en el circuito histórico asunceno y nacional, debido a que los principales protagonistas de la independencia del Paraguay (1811), usaron esta casa como sede de sus reuniones secretas. En ella se atesoran documentos y objetos históricos, además de mobiliarios, indumentaria, pinturas, retratos, y varios utensilios de la época. This permanent collection

constitutes almost 100 religious images from Paraguay corresponding to the 17th and 18th centuries. Every artifact is artistically and historically priceless. The museum also houses a bookstore, a store selling merchandising and a coffee bar.

A cornerstone of the historical circuit around Asuncion and Paraguay, as the protagonists of the independence of Paraguay (1811) used the house as the venue of their secret meetings. Exhibited within are historical objects and documents, as well as furniture, clothing, paintings, portraits and various utensils from the era.

La colección del Palacio está determinada por la secuencia cronológica de las formas de Gobierno que consolidaron la Independencia del Paraguay, desde 1811 al 2011. Debido a su condición de sede presidencial, tiene estrictas medidas de seguridad y está prohibido el ingreso con cámaras fotográficas o filmadoras.

Creado en 1985, alberga alrededor de 1.300 objetos históricos. Parte de su acervo tiene origen en la colección personal de Juan Sinforiano Bogarín, el primer arzobispo del Paraguay. El mismo inició esta colección recogiendo documentos históricos, a los que luego se fueron agregando otros objetos cedidos o donados.

The Palace collection is determined by the chronological sequence of the forms of Government that consolidated the Independence of Paraguay from 1811 to 2011. Due to its role as the Presidential Palace, strict security measures are in place, and it is forbidden to enter with cameras or video cameras.

Created in 1985, it houses around 1,300 historic objects. Parto of its heritage comes from the personal collection of Juan Sinforiano Bogarín, the first archbishop of Paraguay. He started the collection himself, gathering historical documents to which other loaned or donated documents and objects were later added.

Conserva invaluables piezas de arte del universal del siglo XVII y comienzo del XX, además de arte paraguayo del siglo XIX y mediados del XX. Entre los objetos que guarda se encuentran monedas antiguas, muebles y variados objetos que pertenecieron a su creador, Juan Silvano Godoy. En el mismo predio también funciona el Archivo Nacional.

Se encuentra en la colina más elevada del barrio Trinidad, de frente a la que fuera vivienda del primer Presidente Constitucional del Paraguay, Don Carlos Antonio López. En su interior se conservan retablos del periodo franciscano e imágenes de tamaño natural, que adquieren gran expresividad durante las fiestas de Semana Santa.

It houses invaluable pieces of art from the 17th century and beginnings of the 20th century, as well as Paraguayan art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the objects are antique coins, furniture and various objects that belonged to the creator, Juan Silvano Godoy. The National Archive is on the same grounds.

Located on the tallest hill of the Trinidad neighborhood, opposite what was once the home of the first Constitutional President of Paraguay, Don Carlos Antonio López. Exhibited within are the altarpieces from the franciscan period and life-sized images, which acquire great expressiveness during the Holy Week festivities.

Su fundación se debe al gran filántropo y estudioso Dr. Andrés Barbero. Fue él quien a través de adquisiciones y donaciones, reunió la primera colección del museo, la cual con el tiempo derivó en la formación de la colección actual, conformada por piezas de las culturas de parcialidades indígenas del Paraguay.

La construcción de este templo de estilo romano, se inició 1893 y estuvo a cargo del arquitecto italiano Juan Colombo. Declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional, también se convirtió en hospital de sangre durante la Guerra del Chaco (1932-1935). Además de su peculiar estilo arquitectónico, es la única iglesia del país que cuenta con un órgano de tubos.

Founded by the great philanthropist and specialist Dr. Andrés Barbero. Through donations and acquisitions, he managed to gather the first collection of the museum, which in time became the collection it is now, consisting of the cultures of the various indigenous peoples of Paraguay.

The construction of this roman style temple began in 1893 and was under the charge of Juan Colombo. Declared a National Historic Monument, it was also used as a field hospital during the Chaco War (1932-1935). Apart from its unusual architectural style, it is the only church in Paraguay with a pipe organ.

Cuenta con una vasta colección de objetos testimoniales de la Guerra contra la Triple Alianza (1864- 1870), entre ellos el mural de Holden Jara titulado Camino a Cerro Corá, la mesa de composición de periódicos que se editaron durante la contienda, así como los objetos personales del General José Eduvigis Díaz.

Además de documentación sobre la fauna y la flora nacional, posee colecciones científicas dividas en ejemplares en seco (animales y plantas, organismos enteros o partes, nidos, huesos y dientes; conchas de invertebrados y otros exoesqueletos), y en líquido (animales y plantas, preparaciones histológicas, piedras, fósiles y minerales).

It holds a vast collection of testimonial objects from the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), among them the mural of Holden Jara titled Camino a Cerro Corá (The way to Cerro Corá), the composition desk used by the newspapers that were edited during the war, as well as personal objects belonging to General José Eduvigis Díaz.

As well as documentation about the national flora and fauna, there are scientific collections divided into dry (animals and plants, whole or part of organisms, nests, bones and teeth; invertebrate shells and other exoskeletons), and wet (animals and plants, histological samples, and stones, fossils and minerals).

Galería de la Plaza de la Democracia

Fundado por el Dr. Carlos Fiebrig y Ana Gertz, su esposa, el museo conserva y exhibe una gran variedad de especies nativas y en extinción. Guarda además una serie de artículos indígenas pertenecientes a las diferentes familias lingüísticas de Paraguay. Previa solicitud, se realizan visitas grupales guiadas.

Esta galería encapsulada en el pasado, es el refugio de la mayoría de los anticuarios de Asunción. Integrantes de la Sociedad de Coleccionistas del Paraguay, cada una de las tiendas que la conforman, guardan monedas, billetes, libros, radios, muñecas de porcelana, discos de vinilo y otros artículos de colección.

Founded by Dr. Carlos Fiebrig and his wife Ana Gertz, the museum maintains and exhibits a variety of native species, some in danger of extinction. It also holds a selection of artifacts that belonged to the different linguistic families of Paraguay. On request, guided tours for groups can be arranged.

This gallery is like a step into the past, as it is a refuge for the majority of the antiquarians of Asuncion. Members of the Society of Collectors of Paraguay, each stand that makes up the gallery has coins, bills, books, radios, porcelain dolls, vinyl discs and other collectable articles.

Guarda las colecciones etnográficas y arqueológicas recopiladas por el etnógrafo y arqueólogo José Antonio Perazzo, que luego fueron ampliadas por comunidades indígenas. El sector etnográfico expone de forma permanente colecciones de las familias lingüísticas Guaraní (Mbyá, Avá Guaraní, Paĩ Tavytera y Chiriguano) y Zamuko (Yshyr Ybytoso, Yshyr Tomaraho y Ayoreo).

Diseñado por el uruguayo Carlos Zucchi, este monumento histórico de estilo neoclásico está compuesto de tres naves divididas por una fila de arcos, además de las tres campanas que forman las torres del campanario. En 2009 fue escogida por la Organización Capital Americana de la Cultura como el cuarto tesoro del Patrimonio Cultural Material de Asunción.

It houses the ethnographic and archeological collection put together by the ethnographer and archaeologist José Antonio Perazzo, which was then built on by indigenous communities. The ethnographic section has a permanent exhibit of collections of the Guarani ( Mbyá, Avá Guaraní, Pai Tavytera and Chiriguano) and Zamuko (Yshyr Ybytoso, Yshyr Tomaraho y Ayoreo) linguistic families.

Designed by the Uruguayan Carlos Zucchi, neoclassic style historic monument is made up of three naves divided by a row of arches, as well as three bells that form the bell tower. In 2009 it was chosen as the fourth treasure of the Material Cultural heritage of Asuncion by the American Capital of Culture Organization.

Una sucesión de antorchas y candiles marca el camino a

Tañarandy, la compañía de la localidad de San Ignacio, en el

departamento de Misiones, que supo convertir una forma de

expresión de fe católica, en un espectáculo visual. A line of

torches and oil lamps lead the way to Tañarandy, a colony

located in San Ignacio, department of Misiones, where the

people learned to convert the expression of their Catholic faith

into a visual spectacle. The popular procession and the “living

pictures” seen there each Good Friday attract tourists from all

over Paraguay and the rest of the world.

Cuenta la historia que los nativos que antiguamente habitaban Tañarandy (tierra de demonios, en guaraní), fueron los únicos en rechazar la doctrina cristiana que la Compañía de Jesús impartió en las Misiones, durante el siglo XVII y mediados del siglo XVIII. La rebeldía les valió el mote de herejes e irreductibles, nombres utilizados hasta hoy para describir a esta compañía de San Ignacio, convertida a finales del siglo XX en símbolo de religiosidad y gran atractivo turístico.

Fue el artista plástico Koki Ruiz, quien en 1992 dio origen al ya tradicional Vía Crucis que anualmente

representan los pobladores de lugar. Son ellos mismos los que en meses previos a la Semana Santa, componen cada una de las piezas que el Viernes Santo, recrean escenas de la pasión y crucifixión de Jesús.

Durante la procesión realizada a la luz de los candiles, tienen especial protagonismo los Estacioneros, un grupo de hombres que portando farolas y a paso lento, entonan canciones lastimeras. Junto a ellos, miles de personas protagonizan una peregrinación que trasciende los horizontes de la fe, y convierte a la multitudinaria marcha en un espectáculo sin igual.

Tañarandy: Un viaje a la tierra de los irreductibles Tañarandy: A trip to the land of the unyielding

The story goes that the natives that originally inhabited Tañarandy (land of the demons in Guarani) were the only ones to reject the christian doctrine the Society of Jesus spread during the Missions in the 17th and late 18th centuries. This rebellion earned them the nickname of heretics and unyielding, words still used to describe the settlement of San Ignacio to this day. At the end of the 20th century, it became a symbol of religiousness and a great tourist attraction.

It was the plastic artists, Koki Ruiz, who in 1992 gave origin to the now

traditional Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), which is played out annually by the inhabitants. These same people spend months before Holy Week preparing every single piece that is used on Good Friday to act out scenes of the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ.

During the candlelit procession, los Estacioneros, a group of men carrying lamps as they slowly march and sing pitiful laments, take center stage. Thousands of people accompany them on a pilgrimage that transcends the limits of faith, and makes this multitudinous march a unique spectacle.

The Calle de los Suspiros (Street of Whispers) is undoubtedly the most emblematic part of this city, which lies 177km from Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital. There are many theories about the name of the street. One of them claims it was the route where those condemned to death were abandoned, to then be drowned by the rising tide. Other less fatalist theories attribute the name to the whispers of soldiers and sailors, who would often bump into beautiful women there. But then there is also talk of a young woman's last whisper, who, while waiting for her lover, was fatally stabbed by an unknown person.

Stories like this give life to a fascinating city which seduces its visitors with its peaceful cobbled streets. Its churches, museums and stately homes, preserved in an impeccable colonial Portuguese style complete the panorama of a city that awakens the imagination and transports you to another time.
