Bajo ese andén, hasta hace unos años se multiplicaban las voces, abrazos, sonrisas y lágrimas

de los pasajeros recién llegados y los que estaban por partir. Esas vías aún tiemblan de vez en cuando bajo el trepidar del paso cercano de enormes camiones, sobre la avenida que llega hasta el puerto de Asunción. En medio de todas estas imágenes estáticas, el tiempo se arrastra en la Estación Central del Ferrocarril, la cual en su momento fue el símbolo de un país que avanzaba vertiginoso sobre las vías del progreso.

La construcción de este edificio, uno de los atractivos turísticos de Asunción, se inició en febrero de 1861 y acabó en 1864. Para este fin fue contratado el arquitecto inglés Alonso Taylor, secundado por su colega italiano Alejandro Ravizza. En un principio era denominada de dos maneras,

Beneath that platform, until some years ago, voices, hugs, smiles and tears of newly

Con la privatización iniciada en los 90, se inició el inexorable descenso del ferrocarril paraguayo, por la falta de mantenimiento de toda su infraestructura y el consiguiente descenso de pasajeros debido a los tramos recortados. A inicios del 2000 se realizó el despido de casi 600 funcionarios, los cuales fueron indemnizados luego de toda una vida de servicio a las locomotoras nacionales. Sólo quedaron 25 personas. Los andenes quedaron mudos y el único humo que se dispersa en el amplio local es el humo del cigarrillo de un solitario cuidador nocturno.

With privatization beginning in the 90s, the inexorable decline of the paraguayan railway began, due to the lack of maintenance of its infrastructure and the consequent decline in passengers after several routes were cancelled. La antigua parada de los trenes, bajo la administración de Ferrocariles del Paraguay, se mantuvo en pie abriendo sus puertas a otros usos. En algunos momentos albergó oficinas de otros entes públicos. También fue sede de eventos artísticos y culturales. Sin embargo, estas actividades fueron suspendidas debido al peligro de que su añosa estructura colapse.

Una manera de conocer y apreciar de cerca la historia del tren es visitando el museo histórico que se encuentra en la estación. En este recorrido uno se puede imaginar aquellos años en que la llegada del vehículo a vapor constituía todo un acontecimiento en cada una de las 35 estaciones que se encontraban en diversos puntos de la república.

Grandes relojes de 1895, planos originales de locomotoras, fotografías antiguas y grandes libros, que se suman a los telégrafos y teléfonos, forman parte de este tesoro nacional. A esto se agregan los documentos administrativos, fichas de personal y cajas fuertes que se distribuyen en las diferentes salas. También es posible apreciar los muebles originales del vagón presidencial, donde se alojaron los ex presidentes Eusebio Ayala y José Felix Estigarribia.

One way of learning about and appreciating the history of the train is by visiting the historical museum located inside the station. On this tour you can visualize those years when the arrival of the steam train at each of the 35 stations loacted in various parts of the republic was quite an event .

Grand clocks from 1895, original blueprints of locomotives, old photographs and great books, in addition to the telegraph and telephone, are part of this national treasure. Added to this are administrative documents, personnel files and safes that are distributed in the different rooms. It is also possible to see the original furniture of the presidential car used by former presidents Eusebio Ayala and Jose Felix Estigarribia.

Universal Import is a family company, born from a taste for decoration and a desire

to bring decorative items that help to awaken the christmas spirit into the market. It has been in operation for over 18 years and the journalist and businesswoman, Vivian Benitez, has been part of it since its inception. Los Goya del Paraguay

La sala/museo denominada Los Goya del Paraguay, fue armada en reconocimiento a uno de los artistas más significativos de la historia universal: Francisco de Goya y Lucientes. Exhibe cuatro grandes series de grabados: Los Caprichos, Los Desastres de la Guerra, La Tauromaquia y Los Disparates.

Esta muestra presenta un lote de 33 piezas originales que representan a cada una de las series. La colección pertenece al acervo del Centro de Artes Visuales / Museo del Barro. La misma fue expuesta de manera completa en un ciclo de muestras itinerantes llevadas a cabo en ciudades como San Lorenzo, Pedro Juan Caballero, Concepción, Ciudad del Este y Asunción, entre setiembre y diciembre del 2001.

The room/museum called The Goya of Paraguay, was assembled in recognition of one of the most significant artists of world history: Francisco de Goya y Lucientes. On display are four great series of etchings: Los Caprichos, Los Desastres de la Guerra, La Tauromaquia y Los Disparates.

This exhibition presents a batch of 33 original pieces representing each of the series. The collection belongs to the body of the Visual Arts Center / Museo del Barro. It took part in a roadshow held in cities such as San Lorenzo, Pedro Juan Caballero, Concepción, Asunción and Ciudad del Este, between September and December 2001.

Exposición Individual de Flavio Giménez

Hasta mediados de octubre permanece habilitada la exposición de pintura del artista paraguayo Flavio Giménez, originario de Yaguarón, departamento de Paraguarí.

Giménez complementó sus estudios de artes plásticas y escultura en el Instituto Superior de Bellas Artes, y obtuvo varios reconocimientos a lo largo de su corta carrera. En 2010 formó parte de la selección de artistas del Premio Henri Matisse, otorgado por la Alianza Francesa, al cual clasificó con la instalación Cajitas de la Ciudad; y en el último año formó parte de varias exposiciones colectivas.

Karai Octubre: Un señor de cuidado

Karai Octubre: A careful man

Una vez superada la amenaza de agosto, a la cual se hizo frente con carrulim (brebaje preparado con la mezcla de la caña, ruda y limón), hay que prepararse para llegada del Karai Octubre, en el inicio del décimo mes del año. La tradición cuenta que el personaje aparecerá en los hogares al mediodía y se dirigirá directamente a la cocina para encontrar en abundancia el jopará, plato a base de locro y verduras que será servido durante el almuerzo. La comida tiene como fin alejar al indeseable visitante. En caso de que un hogar no haya preparado el alimento para saciar a los habitantes, el funesto visitante dejará su carga de miserias y necesidades durante el resto del año.

La creencia popular describe al Karai Octubre como un hombre petiso, vestido con ropas desgastadas, al cual no se le puede ver la sombra, salvo la de su sombrero piri. Según se cuenta, lleva consigo un látigo de ysypo, tiene mal carácter y es portador de desventuras. El origen de esta costumbre se remonta a los tiempos de

Once we have overcome the threat of August with carrulim (a concoction prepared by mixing cañon, rude and lemon), we prepare for the arrival of Karai Octubre, at the beginning of the tenth month of the year. Está situado en la Casa Viola, una de las nueve casas que conforman el Centro Cultural de la Ciudad Manzana de la Rivera. Exhibe elementos que reconstruyen parte de la historia de Asunción, como objetos arqueológicos, pinturas, elementos ornamentales y una serie de muebles. Alberga además libros y documentos históricos como mapas y cartas.

Este espacio cultural dependiente de la Embajada de España en Paraguay, está abierto a la difusión de las nuevas tendencias estéticas, así como de grupos y artistas emergentes. En su programación mensual se destacan las actividades formativas, exposiciones, espectáculos escénicos, conciertos, cine y seminarios.

Located in Casa Viola, it is one of the nine houses that make up the Cultural Center of the City Manzana de la Rivera. It exhibits articles that reconstruct part of the history of Asuncion, such as archeological objects, paintings, ornamental objects and a selection of furniture. It also houses historic books and documents such as maps and letters.

The aim of this cultural center, run by the Embassy of Spain in Paraguay, is to promote new esthetic trends as well as emerging bands and artists. The highlights of their monthly program are the educational activities, exhibitions, stage shows, concerts, cinema and seminars.

El Centro de Artes Visuales alberga al Museo del Barro, con más de 4.000 piezas correspondientes a producciones mestizas, desde el siglo XVII en adelante. Allí también se encuentra el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MPAC), con una colección permanente de pintura, dibujo, grabado, instalación, objeto y escultura actual del Paraguay; y el Museo de Arte Indígena (MAI), con más de 1750 piezas.

The only cultural center in Villa Morra, considered the new financial and economic hub of the capital. It features paintings, etchings, drawings, photographs, ceramics, sculptures, theater and music. Around fifty cultural activities take place every year and it receives an average of 4,000 visitors.

The Center of Visual Arts houses the Earthenware Museum, with over 4,000 pieces corresponding to mestizo creations, from the 17th century onwards. Su colección permanente está compuesta de casi un centenar de imágenes religiosas paraguayas, correspondientes a los siglos XVII y XVIII. Cada una de ellas posee un incalculable valor artístico e histórico. El museo cuenta además con una vasta librería, una tienda de merchandising y un café bar.

Es la antigua sede del Cabildo y Parlamento Nacional, convertida en museo. Ofrece permanentes muestras de arte contemporáneo, de arte plumario y de fotografía. En sus salas de exposiciones temporales, auditorios y biblioteca, se desarrollan programas y proyectos culturales de difusión de las creaciones de artistas contemporáneos nacionales e internacionales.This permanent collection

constitutes almost 100 religious images from Paraguay corresponding to the 17th and 18th centuries. Every artifact is artistically and historically priceless. The museum also houses a bookstore, a store selling merchandising and a coffee bar.

The former home of the City Council and National Parliament is now a museum. There are permanent displays of contemporary art, featherwork and photography. Its temporary exhibition halls, auditoriums and library, host cultural projects and programs which highlight the creations of national and international contemporary artists.

La colección del Palacio está determinada por la secuencia cronológica de las formas de Gobierno que consolidaron la Independencia del Paraguay, desde 1811 al 2011. Debido a su condición de sede presidencial, tiene estrictas medidas de seguridad y está prohibido el ingreso con cámaras fotográficas o filmadoras.

Creado en 1985, alberga alrededor de 1.300 objetos históricos. Parte de su acervo tiene origen en la colección personal de Juan Sinforiano Bogarín, el primer arzobispo del Paraguay. El mismo inició esta colección recogiendo documentos históricos, a los que luego se fueron agregando otros objetos cedidos o donados.

The Palace collection is determined by the chronological sequence of the forms of Government that consolidated the Independence of Paraguay from 1811 to 2011. Due to its role as the Presidential Palace, strict security measures are in place, and it is forbidden to enter with cameras or video cameras.

Created in 1985, it houses around 1,300 historic objects. Parto of its heritage comes from the personal collection of Juan Sinforiano Bogarín, the first archbishop of Paraguay. He started the collection himself, gathering historical documents to which other loaned or donated documents and objects were later added.

Conserva invaluables piezas del arte universal del siglo XVII y comienzo del XX, además de arte paraguayo del siglo XIX y mediados del XX. Entre los objetos que guarda se encuentran monedas antiguas, muebles y variados objetos que pertenecieron a su creador, Juan Silvano Godoy.

Se encuentra en la colina más elevada del barrio Trinidad, de frente a la que fuera vivienda del primer Presidente Constitucional del Paraguay, Don Carlos Antonio López. En su interior se conservan retablos del periodo franciscano e imágenes de tamaño natural, que adquieren gran expresividad durante las fiestas de Semana Santa.

It houses invaluable pieces of art from the 17th century and beginnings of the 20th century, as well as Paraguayan art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the objects are antique coins, furniture and various objects that belonged to the creator, Juan Silvano Godoy.

Located on the tallest hill of the Trinidad neighborhood, opposite what was once the home of the first Constitutional President of Paraguay, Don Carlos Antonio López. Exhibited within are the altarpieces from the franciscan period and life-sized images, which acquire great expressiveness during the Holy Week festivities.

Es un sitio de referencia en el circuito histórico asunceno y nacional, debido a que los principales protagonistas de la independencia del Paraguay (1811), usaron esta casa como sede de sus reuniones secretas. En ella se atesoran documentos y objetos históricos, además de mobiliarios, indumentaria, pinturas, retratos, y varios utensilios de la época.

La construcción de este templo de estilo romano se inició en 1893 y estuvo a cargo del arquitecto italiano Juan Colombo. Declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional, también se convirtió en hospital de sangre durante la Guerra del Chaco (1932-1935). Además de su peculiar estilo arquitectónico, es la única iglesia del país que cuenta con un órgano de tubos.

A cornerstone of the historical circuit around Asuncion and Paraguay, as the protagonists of the independence of Paraguay (1811) used the house as the venue of their secret meetings. Exhibited within are historical objects and documents, as well as furniture, clothing, paintings, portraits and various utensils from the era.

The construction of this roman style temple began in 1893 and was under the charge of Juan Colombo. Declared a National Historic Monument, it was also used as a field hospital during the Chaco War (1932-1935). Apart from its unusual architectural style, it is the only church in Paraguay with a pipe organ.

Cuenta con una vasta colección de objetos testimoniales de la Guerra contra la Triple Alianza (1864- 1870), entre ellos el mural de Holden Jara titulado Camino a Cerro Corá, la mesa de composición de periódicos que se editaron durante la contienda, así como los objetos personales del General José Eduvigis Díaz.

Además de documentación sobre la fauna y la flora nacional, posee colecciones científicas dividas en ejemplares en seco (animales y plantas, organismos enteros o partes, nidos, huesos y dientes; conchas de invertebrados y otros exoesqueletos), y en líquido (animales y plantas, preparaciones histológicas, piedras, fósiles y minerales).

It holds a vast collection of testimonial objects from the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), among them the mural of Holden Jara titled Camino a Cerro Corá (The way to Cerro Corá), the composition desk used by the newspapers that were edited during the war, as well as personal objects belonging to General José Eduvigis Díaz.

As well as documentation about the national flora and fauna, there are scientific collections divided into dry (animals and plants, whole or part of organisms, nests, bones and teeth; invertebrate shells and other exoskeletons), and wet (animals and plants, histological samples, and stones, fossils and minerals).

Fundado por el Dr. Carlos Fiebrig y Ana Gertz, su esposa, el museo conserva y exhibe una gran variedad de especies nativas y en extinción. Guarda además una serie de artículos indígenas pertenecientes a las diferentes familias lingüísticas de Paraguay. Previa solicitud, se realizan visitas grupales guiadas.

Su fundación se debe al gran filántropo y estudioso Dr. Andrés Barbero. Fue él quien a través de adquisiciones y donaciones, reunió la primera colección del museo, la cual con el tiempo derivó en la formación de la colección actual, conformada por piezas de las culturas de parcialidades indígenas del Paraguay.

Founded by Dr. Carlos Fiebrig and his wife Ana Gertz, the museum maintains and exhibits a variety of native species, some in danger of extinction. It also holds a selection of artifacts that belonged to the different linguistic families of Paraguay. On request, guided tours for groups can be arranged.

Founded by the great philanthropist and specialist Dr. Andrés Barbero. Through donations and acquisitions, he managed to gather the first collection of the museum, which in time became the collection it is now, consisting of the cultures of the various indigenous peoples of Paraguay.

Toda la historia del fútbol sudamericano y sus personajes está concentrada en este museo de 1.500 metros cuadrados. En dos niveles conectados por una rampa, es posible contemplar trofeos, camisetas y otros objetos históricos, y ver una película en 360 grados sobre los orígenes del futbol y su evolución en América del Sur.

Diseñado por el uruguayo Carlos Zucchi, este monumento histórico de estilo neoclásico está compuesto de tres naves divididas por una fila de arcos, además de las tres campanas que forman las torres del campanario. En 2009 fue escogida por la Organización Capital Americana de la Cultura como el cuarto tesoro del Patrimonio Cultural Material de Asunción.

The whole history of south american soccer and its characters are concentrated in this 1.5 square km museum. On two floors, connected by a ramp, the visitor has the chance to view the trophies, jerseys and other historic objects, and watch a 360 degree movie about the origins of soccer and its evolution in South America.

Designed by the Uruguayan Carlos Zucchi, neoclassic style historic monument is made up of three naves divided by a row of arches, as well as three bells that form the bell tower. In 2009 it was chosen as the fourth treasure of the Material Cultural heritage of Asuncion by the American Capital of Culture Organization.

This is a cultural space dedicated to promoting contemporary art, where material by local and foreign artists converge. Multi-faceted and unconventional, there is also a bar, and the visitor is encouraged to interact in various ways with what it has to offer.

Nonprofit institution created by the artist Ricardo Migliorisi. It consists of various art collections such as: Paraguayan Sacred Art and Latin American Sacred Art, Brazilian Popular Engraving, contemporary graphics, and every work of Migliorisi from the 60s to the present.

Además de ser el principal centro de fabricación de

pelotas del país, la pintoresca ciudad de Quiindy es

una puerta de acceso al lago Ypoa. Besides being the

main ball manufacturing center of the country, the

quaint town of Quiindy is a gateway to Lake Ypoa.

Viajando por la ruta I Mariscal López, y poco antes de completar los a 109 kilómetros que la separan de Asunción, ya se puede divisar el sello característico de Quiindy al costado del camino: las pelotas que esperan la llegada de los compradores desbordados por la pasión del fútbol. La fabricación de balones es la principal actividad económica de esta ciudad de alrededor de 20.000 habitantes, ubicada en Paraguarí, IX departamento del país y circundada por la vegetación y arroyos como el Tobatinguá y el Jacarey.

Otro gran atractivo de la zona es el parque Nacional del Lago Ypoá, que cuenta con una superficie de 100.000 hectáreas y abarca los departamentos de Paraguarí, Central y Ñeembucú. Sin embargo, acceder hasta el mismo lago es una tarea complicada debido al mal estado de los caminos y por hallarse el lugar rodeado de estancias privadas. Para cruzarlas hay que solicitar el permiso correspondiente a quienes las cuidan.

El significado del nombre Quiindy está basado en dos hipótesis. Una de ellas conduce a Ky'ïty, palabra en guaraní que quiere decir poblado de pimientos rojos. Otra versión señala que el nombre deviene de las luciérnagas que pueblan sus noches, seres que al igual que el resto de sus habitantes, la convierten en un fascinante lugar.

Traveling on Ruta I Mariscal Lopez and just short of the 109 kilometers that separate it from Asunción, you can see the trademark of Quiindy on the roadside: the balls that await the arrival of buyers overwhelmed by the passion for football. The production of soccer balls is the main economic activity in this town of about 20,000 inhabitants, located in Paraguarí, IX department of the country, surrounded by vegetation and streams such as Tobatinguá and Jacarey.

Another major attraction of the area is the Ypoá Lake National Park, with an area of 100,000 hectares, placing it in the departments of Paraguarí, Central and Ñeembucú. However, access to the lake itself is a difficult task due to the poor state of the roads and it being surrounded by private ranches. To travel through them, one must have the permission of the land owners or caretakers.

There are two theories as to the meaning of the name "Quiindy". One is that it comes from the word "Ky'ïty", a Guarani word meaning "village of red peppers". Another version says that the name comes from the fireflies that light up the nights, creatures that, like the rest of its inhabitants, make it a fascinating place.

Entre rascacielos y modernas avenidas que son atravesadas por el Beberibe y el Capibaribe, ríos que se conjugan con sus edificios coloniales y callejones tradicionales, Recife, la capital del Estado de Pernambuco, es otro destino para descubrir. La ciudad fue una de las primeras zonas del Brasil en ser colonizada por los portugueses. Entre 1630 y 1653, la dominación de los holandeses en el país introdujo importantes obras de infraestructura en Recife, dotándola de puentes, diques y canales, por lo cual es conocida como la Venecia del Brasil.

Recife es considerada el corazón logístico del nordeste brasileño debido a su ubicación geográfica, dos puertos y el aeropuerto internacional. Además cuenta con toda la infraestructura necesaria para albergar a los turistas. Esta ciudad será una de las sedes del Mundial Brasil 2014.

Sus atractivos turísticos se distribuyen entre playas (principalmente Boa Viagem), museos, teatros, y reliquias históricas como Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, la sinagoga más antigua de Latinoamérica. El carnaval de Recife es uno de los más conocidos y concurridos del mundo. La celebración se inicia una semana antes de la oficial en el país, y en su noche central puede reunir a un millón de personas.

Thanks to its skyscrapers and modern avenues that are crossed by the Beberibe and Capibaribe, rivers that blend in with the colonial buildings and traditional alleys, Recife, capital of Pernambuco state, is another destination to discover. The city was one of the first areas of Brazil to be colonized by the Portuguese. Between 1630 and 1653 the Dutch introduced major infrastructure works in Recife, building bridges, dams and canals, which is why it is known as the Venice of Brazil.

Recife is considered the logistic heart of the Northeast due to its geographical location, its two ports and the international airport. It also has all the necessary infrastructure to accommodate tourists. This city is one of the venues chosen for the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

Its tourist attractions are include beaches (mainly Boa Viagem), museums, theaters, and historical relics, such as the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in the Americas. The carnival of Recife is one of the best known and busiest in the world. The celebration begins a week before the official national carnival, and on its main night it attracts up to a million people.
