Karaoke Court by Jack Tan
About• An evening performance and arbitration
conceived by artist, Jack Tan. Presented as part of his exhibition How to do things with rules, the performance features local participants performing their own versions of songs in order to resolve neighbor, friend or family disputes. Overseen by a real-life lawyer and arbitrator, the performance also invites audience members to judge which participant should win for each case.

Case 1: piano teacher and piano student
Client: Fran-Ho
A piano teacher, wants her daughter to practice piano daily while students only
wishes to practice 3-4 times per week.
Case 2: band manager and member
Client: Olivia Kwok
A piano teacher, wants her daughter to practice piano daily while students only
wishes to practice 3-4 times per week.
Case 3: contemporary art and traditional art
Client: Mary He
Mary He is modern, moving forward wants to include contemporary music into
classes, whereas Mary Qiu prefers traditional music and
only wishes to practice traditional music.
Case 4: curfew issue
Client: Pamela Ng
Pamela Ng likes to party and hang out with friends till
late, but her mum, Pauline Ng, wishes her to come back
before midnight.
Case 5: Cold weather and Warm weather
Client: Emilee
Emilee wants to visit a tropical climate area while her friend, Fiona wants to
visit a country that has cold weather for their upcoming
holiday trip
Case 6: Jazz music and Pop music
Client: Nicole
Nicole loves jazz music while Gregory loves pop music.
Who will be able to convince each other to try out their favourite music over the
dispute?
