2 Third Sunday of Advent December 13, 2015

CELEBRATE This Sunday, God rejoices and sings because of us. We read in Zephaniah today that God "will sing joyfully because of you, / as one sings at festivals" (Zephaniah 3:18). We know plenty about singing at festivals. Already our ears are ringing with the songs and carols that anticipate the Christmas season. Paul reminds us of the source of our own double rejoicing: God is the mighty savior who is in our midst (in Zephaniah's words). Because this is so, says Paul, we can rejoice and be at ease. We don't have to worry, for God's peace will stand guard over our hearts and minds.

A medieval carol depicts Christmas as "my dancing day" and urges us to enter into the dance. Why all the merrymaking? Because "the Lord is near," as Paul reminds us (Philippians 4:5). He then points to another reason for the dancing: the dawn of the promise of peace, the peace beyond all understanding, that is now within our grasp.

Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

MASS FOR ANOINTING OF THE SICK WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2015, 11:00 A.M.

Through the apostle James, Jesus has commanded us: ‘Are there any who are sick among you? Let them send for the priests of the Church, and let the priests pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of

faith will save the sick persons, and the Lord will raise them up; and if they have committed any sins, their sins will be forgiven them’” This administration of the sacrament of the sick is offered to those Catholics who are experiencing physical ailments of a serious nature: those who will be undergoing surgery for serious reasons, the elderly who have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present, those who are battling serious illnesses and have not been anointed recently, and children who have reached the age of reason and are seriously ill. The community is called to offer prayers and support to those in need of our love and care.

RECEPTION FOLLOWING THE MASS: A reception immediately follows the Mass and everyone at the Mass is invited to attend. If you plan to attend the reception, please contact the office at 909-797-2533 to sign-up so that we can reserve a place for you at the reception.

"You also must be prepared, because the Son of Man will

come at an hour when you do not expect him." (Matthew 24:44). Reflection: The word "Advent" means "coming," and the season focuses on the coming of Christ at the end of time, and then on his first coming at Christmas. The joy of Advent is joined by a strong warning that we must be prepared for his coming. Promoting justice and human rights is a key element of our preparation. A society that aborts its children is not prepared for the coming of Christ. Prayer: Come, Lord Jesus. May we be prepared to welcome you by welcoming all human life. Amen

Respect

Our inspired readings for the third week of Advent express a great sense of God’s people, those of

us living now, and those people living in the prophets Zephaniah and Isaiah’s time. Zephaniah exclaims, “Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel! Be glad and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem!... The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty Savior; He will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love…” (Zechariah 3:14,17) We hear Isaiah, the greatest of the prophets, proclaim, “God indeed is my Savior; I am confident and unafraid. My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my Savior. With joy you will draw water at the fountain of salvation… Sing praise to the Lord for his glorious achievement… shout with exultation, O city of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy one of Israel!” (Isaiah 12:2,3,5a,6) These scripture prayers are an example of those read to a Stephen Minister’s care receiver for encouragement.

Stephen Ministry

Amen
