El puerto de San Blas es uno de los iconos

turísticos del Pacífico mexicano, gracias a

importancia histórica, caminar por sus calles

es revivir épocas pasadas que han marcado la

historia de todo México.

Considerado el puerto más importante de la

Nueva España, San Blas necesitaba un fuerte

que lo protegiera de los ataques, así que en

1770 se construyó el Fuerte de la Contaduría

sobre el Cerro de Basilio, en lo alto se ve

una escultura del cura José María Mercado,

insurgente que se levantó en armas para

defender la libertad de los mexicanos; una

huella imborrable de la independencia de

nuestro pais quedó marcada.

Además de la heroica defensa del puerto de

San Blas por los insurgentes encabezados

por el cura Mercado, en 1811, la historia arraiga

en la memoria de su pueblo, la integración

y expedición del batallón de San Blas

comandado por el coronel Xicoténcatl, que

acudió a la defensa de la patria en 1847 contra

la intervención norteamericana, en la gloriosa

gesta del Castillo de Chapultepec.

Visitar San Blas es transportarse a otro tiempo,

a otro ritmo en el que hasta las actividades más

sencillas como caminar o beber café adquieren

otra dimensión.

The port of San Blas is a tourist icon of the Mexican Pacific.

Thanks to its historical importance, to walk through its

streets is to relive past epochs that have marked the history

of all Mexico.

Considered the most important port of New Spain, San Blas

needed a fort to protect it from attack. So in 1770 the Fort of

the Contaduria on Basilio hill was constructed. At the top is a

sculpture of the priest José María Mercado, an insurgent who

raised arms to defend the liberty of the Mexicans, marking an

enduring footprint of the independence of our country.

Apart from the heroic defense of the port of San Blas by

the insurgents led by the priest Mercado, in 1811, in a story

rooted in the memory of its people, was the integration

and expedition of the battalion of San Blas commanded

by colonel Xicoténcatl, which came to the defense of

the country in 1847 against the American invasion, in the

glorious gesture at Chapultepec Castle (in Mexico City).

Visiting San Blas is to transport yourself to another time,

to another rhythm in which even the simplest activities like

walking or drinking coffee acquire another dimension.

desde el momento que albergó a hernán cortes y su esposa, hasta

haber pasado por ser una cárcel o sede del gobierno provisional de

Juan N. Álvarez contra Santa Anna, es hoy día el Museo de Antropología

de cuernavaca, mejor conocido como Museo cuauhnáhuac.

Cuernavaca es conocida por su agradable clima

Su nombre proviene del náhuatl Cuauhnáhuac,

la palabra derivó en Cuernavaca por deformación

de los españoles.

Cuernavaca is known for its agreeable climate

and pleasant stays which have earned it the

nickname “The City of Eternal Spring”. Not to

mention that historically it has attracted royalty,

artists, and literati of all types to have a vacation

home in the city.

Its name comes from the náhuatl Cuauhnáhuac,

or “next to the trees” in its most accepted

meaning. The word became Cuernavaca due to

its deformation by the Spanish.

podemos comentar la Barranca de Amanalco, La Barranca ecoturística

de Salto chico y la Barranca de San Antón.

THE CANYONSCuernavaca has seven large canyons with an average length of

8 to 15 kilometers, the most in the state of Morelos, which help

provide the stupendous climate enjoyed by the city at all times.

Each of them has been made approachable to make your visit a

more pleasant and tranquil outing. Among the most visited we

recommend Amanalco Canyon, the ecotourist canyon of Salto

Chico and San Antón Canyon.

CATEDRAL O CONVENTO FRANCISCANO DE LA ASUNCIÓNLa catedral de cuernavaca, también llamado el

convento Franciscano de la Asunción. Fue establecido

en 1525 por los doce primeros frailes franciscanos que

llegaron al país, a mediados del siglo XViii la iglesia de

la Asunción ostentaba la categoría de parroquia.

Se conserva la construcción intacta realizada desde el

siglo XVi.

CATHEDRAL OR FRANCISCAN CONVENT OF THE ASSUMPTIONThe cathedral of Cuernavaca, also known as

the Franciscan Convent of the Assumption, was

established in 1525 by the first twelve Franciscan

friars who arrived in the country. By the middle of

the XVIII century the church of the Assumption held

the category of parish. The construction, built since

the XVI century, is conserved intact. The atrium has

always constituted the central part of the structure, in

whose angles it is possible that at first chapels were

constructed, which today are substituted for buildings.

TEPOZTLÁNLA SINGULARIDAD DE UNA EXPRESIÓN: LOS CHINELOS

Chinelo, específicamente, es el traje tradicional empleado para la danza

de “El brinco de los Chinelos”, tradición muy particular del estado de

Morelos y que se realiza durante los días de Carnaval. Hay expresiones

que desde su nacimiento tienen un origen curioso y que llega hasta

nuestros días a partir de un sentido el cual se suele desconocer

totalmente.

El Brinco de los chinelos no es la excepción. Esta danza empezó como

una parodia y una forma de hacerse notar de las castas excluidas de

la colonia. Mientras los criollos y españoles celebraban su carnaval

de manera ostentosa, las demás razas, cansados de esto, los

satirizaron, y empezaron a disfrazarse con enormes trajes que tenían

como característica notoria, una máscara rosada de un mentón muy

pronunciado y un traje que imitaba lo suntuoso de los empleados por

los blancos. Fue de inicio pues una forma de protesta, que se volvió una

celebración pagano religiosa muy arraigada a la entidad.

Chinelo, specifically, is the traditional costume worn for the dance of “The

leap of the Chinelos”, a tradition unique to Morelos state and which is

performed during the days of Carnaval.

There are expressions that from their birth have a curious origin and that

arrive up to the present day with a meaning which tends to be totally

unknown.

The Leap of the chinelos is no exception. This dance started as a parody

and a way to reference the excluded castes of the colony. While the

criollos and Spanish celebrated their Carnaval in an ostentatious manner,

the other races, tired of this show, satirized them and started to dress in

enormous costumes that had a notorious characteristic: a pink mask with

a very pronounced chin and a costume that imitated the sumptuous ones

of the employees of the whites. It was at first a form of protest, that later

became a pagan religious celebration very rooted to the place.

inmediatamente extendiendo a todo el estado de Morelos y

algunas partes del estado de México y Puebla.

Los chinelos parten del término náhuatl Disfrazado, para de ahí

ganarse el mote de huehuenchis “gente que se viste de ropa vieja”.

La danza festiva y alegre sigue el ritmo de las notas jocosas de las

bandas musicales del pueblo; las danzas con su bullicio y colorido

retumban al igual que los cohetes que son lanzados al son de

los tambores, sus vestidos decorados con lentejuelas y chaquira

de colores son expresión viva de la fantasía de figuras animales,

humanas y deidades aztecas.

ON DETAILIts appearance goes back to the town of Tlayacapan, but it immediately spread

to the entire state of Morelos and some parts of Mexico state and Puebla. The

chinelos started out with the nahuatl term for “disguised”, and from there earned

the nickname of huehuenchis, or “people who wear old clothes”.

The festive, happy dance follows the rhythm of the humorous notes of the musical

bands of the town. The dances, with their bustle and color, resound also with the

fireworks launched to the sound of the drums, their colorful dresses decorated

with sequins and beadwork are a living expression of fantastic figures of animals,

humans, and Aztec deities.

CARNAVALel pueblo mágico de tepoztlán abraza esta

tradición durante las fiestas del carnaval, que

comienza el fin de semana anterior al miércoles

de ceniza, sus callejones se visten de colores y

el aroma a leña que calienta barbacoa, gorditas,

chalupas y tlacoyos que podemos acompañar

con pulque o champurrado.

CARNAVALthe magical town of tepoztlán embraces this

tradition during the festivities of carnaval, which

start the weekend before Ash Wednesday. its

alleyways are decorated with many colors and

there is the smell of firewood cooking barbacoa,

gorditas, chapulas, and tlacoyas that can be

accompanied with pulque or champurrado.

Nuestro viaje comienza en Angahuan este

pintoresco pueblo purépecha, nuestro destino

conocer esta maravilla del mundo, el Paricutín.

Paricutín o Parícutin proviene del purépecha

Parhíkutini, que significa “lugar al otro lado”, es

el volcán más joven del mundo, comenzamos a

bajar por un sendero donde se respira verde, es

recomendable hacerlo con un guía del pueblo

quien nos ira platicando lo que nuestros ojos

no podrán creer, se puede bajar caminando o a

caballo, el cómo aquí pasa a segundo término,

después de casi de una hora de camino,

llegamos a donde se encontraba el pueblo de

San Juan Parangaricutiro, que fue sepultado por

la repentina erupción del coloso en 1943.

Our journey begins in Angahuan. This picturesque

Purépecha town is our destination to encounter

the wonder of the world, the Paricutín.

Paricutín comes from the Purépecha word

Parhíkutini, which means “place from the other

side”, and it is the world’s youngest volcano. We

start to descend on a trail surrounded by green.

It is recommendable to go with a guide from the

town who led us talking about what our eyes

couldn’t believe. You can descend on foot or

on horseback, the how here becomes a whole

other question. After almost an hour on the trail,

we arrived at what was the town of San Juan

Parangaricutiro, which was buried by a sudden

eruption from the colossus in 1943.

En medio de este desolador panorama, sobresalen

las ruinas de la iglesia de San Juan Parangaricutiro,

su torre izquierda, sus muros posteriores y el altar

resistieron la furia del volcán, resulta conmovedor

observar cómo la estructura de la iglesia lucha por

mantenerse en pie luego de tantos años, como un

ejemplo de la tenacidad humana ante la fuerza de

la naturaleza.

Frente al altar de la iglesia alcanzamos a ver la

imagen de Cristo, un pequeño hueco entre las

piedras nos permite entrar a este santuario de

listones, velas y flores que decoran las piedras

volcánicas, prueba inequívoca de la fe de un

pueblo.

La leyenda cuenta que el nacimiento del volcán

fue una maldición divina ya que en esos años los

pueblos de San Juan Parangaricutiro y Paricutín

se disputaban la cruz que un sacerdote colocó

en medio de ambos pueblos, el castigo fue que

ambos lugares fueran sepultados.

Antes de partir llegamos a una explanada donde

saciamos nuestro cansancio con un buen taco de

papas de chorizo y un exquisito atole de ceniza;

que tiñe el maíz de la región.

In the middle of this desolate panorama, the ruins of the church of

San Juan Parangaricutiro protrude. Its left tower, the outer walls, and

the altar resisted the fury of the volcano. It is moving to observe how

the structure of the church struggles to remain standing after so many

years, as an example of human tenacity in the face of nature’s force.

In front of the altar of the church we can see the image of Christ, a

small space between the stones allows us to enter this sanctuary

of ribbons, candles, and flowers that decorate the volcanic rocks,

unequivocal proof of the people’s faith.

Legend has it that the birth of the volcano was a divine curse. In

that time the towns of San Juan Parangaricutiro and Paricutín fought

over the cross that a priest had placed between the two towns. The

punishment was that both places were buried.

Before we left we arrived at a plaza where we sated our fatigue with

a good taco of potatoes and chorizo and an exquisite ash atole; made

from the stained corn of the region.

Now, the magical town of Tequila is Santo Coyote territory, and together with Casa Sauza, they give space to the gastronomic concept “La Quinta Sauza”. Here is a magnificent estate that has a large exterior garden with stone fountains decorated in the form of branches and reliefs, and benches, pathways, sculptures, and columns adorn its huge green areas. The Quinta Sauza was built in 1836 and still preserves its architecture with captivating style.

Visitar este restaurante resulta toda una experiencia sensorial y llena de tradiciones mexicanas, ya que ofrecen un recorrido a los sentidos; salimos del restaurant Santo Coyote en Guadalajara nuestro destino Tequila, el paisaje agavero tiñe de azul las montañas es ahí donde llegamos a los campos de agave de Casa Sauza para poder ver el proceso de la jima de la bebida emblemática mexicana, nuestros pasos siguen a la antigua destilería de la casa llamada “La Perseverancia”; el proceso de fabricación del tequila comienza con el cocimiento y la molienda de las piñas de agave para después extraer sus mieles y proceder a su fermentación, estos fermentos son separados mediante la destilación que da paso al “tequila blanco”, maduración y formas de almacenamiento dan color, sabor y textura a los diferentes tipos de tequila.

Visiting this restaurant is a full sensory experience and full of Mexican traditions. Included is a tour for the senses. We leave the Santo Coyote restaurant in Guadalajara for our destination in Tequila, with the agave landscapes painting the mountains blue. Here we arrive at the agave fields of Casa Sauza in order to see the processing of the jima (agave core) for the emblematic Mexican drink. Our path continues to the old distillery of the house called “La Perseverencia”. The tequila production process starts with the cooking and milling of the agave cores in order to extract their nectar and proceed to fermentation. These ferments are separated by means of the distillation which results in “tequila blanco” (white tequila). Maturity and di�erent forms of storage give color, flavor, and texture to the di�erent types of tequila.

We can’t leave Puebla without trying a delicious

pepita from Santa Clara. Well known in the city,

they are topped with caramel and a pasita, an

artisanal raisin liqueur prepared since 1916.

Delicious green or red chalupas are small fried tortillas

with shredded beef, pork, or chicken, then garnished

with onion and salsa. An interesting fact about this dish

is that while the majority of the gastronomy of Puebla

was created by the nuns of the city, this plate is the

invention of the friars of the epoch.

A dish we will certainly only find in Puebla and which

brings together pre-Hispanic ingredients from the

region with techniques of Spanish cuisine, is a portion

of squash flowers macerated following grandma’s

recipe and fried using a unique technique of the

viceroyalty accompanied by poblano rice and guaca-

mole.Las deliciosas Chalupas, verdes o rojas son pequeñas

tortillas fritas con carne deshebrada de res, puerco o

pollo, cebolla y salsa van de la mano, un dato curioso

de este platillo es que mientras la mayor parte de la

gastronomía poblana fue hecha por las monjas de la

ciudad este es resultado de un invento de los frailes de

la época.

Un platillo que seguramente solo podremos encontrar

en puebla y que conjunta los ingredientes prehispáni-

cos de la región con técnicas de cocina española,

es una porción de flores de calabaza maceradas con

la receta de la abuela y capeadas en una técnica

propia del virreinato acompañadas de arroz poblano y

guacamole.

Nosotros llegamos con toda la energía y deci-dimos dar un paseo a caballo esa misma tarde hasta llegar a “los reyes” en una depresión de lo que fue una de las minas más productivas de san sebastián en el siglo XiX, cuando se extraía plata y se beneficiaba a la Hacienda Jalisco, a tan sólo 4 kilómetros del centro.

al regresar, dimos una vuelta por la plaza don-de nos sumergimos en la gastronomía local, nos impresionó la manera en que la neblina baja y cobija al pueblo, haciendo que la tempe-ratura descienda y convirtiendo el ambiente en algo aún más mágico. Para este punto, un vaso de raicilla nos ayudó a mantener el calor.

al día siguiente, no pudimos perder la oportu-nidad de conocer la Bufa a unos 9 kilómetros del pueblo, a donde llegamos en cuatrimoto tras un camino de terracería. su atractivo prin-cipal, es el gran mirador natural en la cumbre, a 2.400 metros sobre el nivel del mar, donde en un día despejado puedes apreciar incluso un vistazo a la Bahía de Banderas, además de la majestuosidad de la sierra Madre occidental.

otro imperdible de san sebastián del oeste la quinta Mary, donde se siembra y elabora café de altura 100% orgánico, y en la que podrás conocer el proceso de elaboración y llevarte a casa dulces artesanales.

Hacienda Jalisco, una construcción del siglo XiX que se mantiene como museo y hotel, famosa por ser uno de los primeros lugares del país que generó electricidad y por haber sido el escondite de una larga lista de celebridades.

the nature that surrounds it, its haciendas, and of course the warmth of its people are the elements that breathe life into this Magical town with its mining past, situated on the edge of the Sierra Madre occidental mountain range.We arrived full of energy and decided to take

a horse ride that afternoon to “Los reyes”, located in a depression of what was one of the most productive mines of San Sebastián in the XIX century, when silver was extracted for the benefit of hacienda Jalisco, just 4 kilometers from the center of town.

When we returned, we strolled around the plaza where we immersed ourselves in the local gastronomy. We were impressed by the way the fog descended and blanketed the town, causing the temperature to drop and converting the ambience into something more magical. at this point, a glass of the spirit raicilla helped us stay warm.

the next day, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to know La bufa, only 9 kilometers from town. We arrived there by four-wheeler on a dirt road. Its main attraction is the great natural vista on the summit, at 2,400 meters above sea level, where on a clear day you can get a view of the bahia de banderas, as well as the majestic Sierra Madre occidental mountain range.

another place you can’t miss in San Sebastián del oeste is the Quinta Mary, where high quality, 100% organic coffee is planted and produced, and at which you can see the elaboration process and take home artisanal sweets.

El barro bruñido tiene un antes y un después con Angel Santos, entre lo tradicional y lo contemporáneo su obra articula el respeto y la continuidad de este arte.

á ngel santos nació en rio Grande, Zacatecas y las casualidades de la vida lo

llevaron a Guadalajara para des-pués llegar a Tonalá, pese al difícil

panorama de estudiar Ángel es li-cenciado en Diseño Gráfico y curso 4 de los 5 años de artes plásticas, ambas carreras en “la universidad de Guadalajara”

el barro bruñido es la más antigua y de mayor tradición prehistórica de la alfarería, del cual se derivaron al-gunas otras técnicas en barro. las piezas elaboradas con ésta técnica tienen un aspecto brillante y terso, la maestría del dibujo es una de sus características más notables, predomina una tendencia pura con motivos florales más bien abstrac-tos y representaciones simbólicas de animales.

a través de vencer los temores ha-cia la diversificación de las mezclas y de esforzarse por alcanzar un atrevimiento en las formas, su tra-bajo ha adquirido una evidente con-temporaneidad.

Through overcoming fears about the diversification of mixtures and striving to achieve a boldness in the forms, his work has acquired an evident contemporaneousness.
