DECLARACIÓN DE MISIÓN DE OLQP La parroquia de la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz se dedica a dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo, especialmente el Evan-gelio de San Mateo, Capítulo 25:21-46. Nuestra misión es nutrir el espíritu y alentar el potencial de aquellos a quienes servimos a través de la cele-bración litúrgica, labores educativas y ministerios sociales. La parroquia continuará identificándose con su origen como una comunidad afro-americana, pero reflejando una congregación multi-étnica y continuará promoviendo la armonía racial y la justicia social. Si bien es cierto que nuestro enfoque principal es la vecindad comunitaria, con-tinuaremos trabajando para proveer por el bienes-tar de los más necesitados en general. Es así como nos esforzamos para hacer de nuestra comunidad parroquial una familia que comparte y se preocupa por sus miembros.

OLQP MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedi-cated to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to encourage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identi-fy with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial har-mony and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the down-trodden everywhere. In this we strive for our par-ish community to be a caring, sharing, and loving family.

All the faithful of the Diocese of Arlington are dispensed from the obliga-

tion to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

Face Coverings · You MUST wear a c loth face covering or

disposable face mask. Please bring your own. Parishes may

have a l imited supply designated for those in true need, not

for general distr ibution.

Hand Hygiene · You are expected to disinfect your hands when

entering the church and encouraged to do so again

immediately before receiving Communion. Please bring your

own hand sanitizer, which should contain at least 60% alcohol.

EL OBISPO BURBIDGE CELEBRA EL DÍA MUNDIAL DE LA ORACIÓN

POR EL CUIDADO DE LA CREACIÓN EN OLQP Tuvimos el honor de tener al Obispo Burbidge para celebrar la Misa con nosotros el martes, 1ro de septiembre, día que marcó el comienzo de la Época de la Creación. El obispo elogió a OLQP por ser la primera parroquia diocesana que instaló paneles sola-res – aceptando el llamado del Papa Francisco de cuidar la casa común (Laudato Si’). Después de la Misa, el Obispo Burbidge bendijo los paneles que, según un estimado, le van a ahorrar $14,000 al año a la parroquia en costos de utilidades.

BISHOP BURBIDGE CELEBRATES WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

FOR THE CARE OF CREATION AT OLQP We were honored to have Bishop Burbidge celebrate Mass with us on Tuesday, September 1st, which marked the start of the Season of Creation. Bishop praised OLQP for being the first dioc-esan parish to install solar panels -- embracing Pope Francis’ call to care for our common home (Ladauto Si). After Mass, Bishop Burbidge blessed the panels which are estimated to save the parish about $14,000 per year in utility costs.

Sept 1 - Bishop Burbidge is joined by Fr. Tim and Dr. James Starke , Ph.D. for a blessing of the parish’s solar panels.

CELEBRATING THE SEASON OF CREATION: In this five-

week period (Sept.1-Oct. 4), we focus on the many aspects of God's gift of Creation. It is a time to reflect, pray and put into practice ways we can become better stewards of our common home. The Integrity of Creation ministry would like to point out resources to guide you in this journey. Each week a member of the committee will offer a bulletin article. For comprehensive re-sources, consider two free series from the National Catholic Re-porter: "Lens on Creation" offers dramatic photos and faith stories from around the world, and "Earthbeat" provides the latest news and content about faith, climate change and action.

MASS TIME CHANGE FOR SATURDAY, SEPT 26, TO 5:30PM - Due to Confirmation Mass scheduling and the need

to sanitize the church after each Mass it has become necessary to change the Mass time on Saturday, September 26, to 5:30pm. Long before covid-19, Bishop Burbidge’s office sched-ule Confirmation Masses with OLQP for 10am and 2pm on Sep-tember 26, Confirmation families were notified and all signed up for those Masses. In order to accommodate the Confirma-tion Masses, we will change the time of our Vigil Mass to 5:30pm only for that date, 9/26. We apologize for any incon-

venience this may cause.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

Thinking about God in your life? Do you know someone who is not baptized or who has been baptized in another Christian tradition, who is interested in exploring what it means to be Catholic? Do you know someone who is Catholic, but has not received Communion or Confirmation? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a place to ask questions and seek understanding of how God acts in our lives and how our faith motivates us to serve others. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will begin meeting virtually using Zoom. Weekly "no obliga-tion" inquiry sessions start Thursday, October 22. STORM LAURA'S EFFECT ON HAITI As of August 29 the Haitian government reported that thirty-one Haitians died because of Laura, which blasted Haiti as a tropical storm two weekends ago before turning into the hurri-cane that hit Louisiana. Sadly, another eight Haitians were missing and many were injured. In Medor there were no deaths. Some crops and buildings were damaged and some homes were flooded. The road to Medor, already treacherous, was impacted. But Père Frantz, pastor of St. Joseph parish, wrote, “Thanks to God, the damage in Medor was not as bad as it could have been.”

CARPENTERS SHELTER DINNER THIS MONTH IS

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 17 Our menu this month is meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green bean salad, biscuits, vegetarian entree, brownies and lemon-ade. Please email mary.resnick@gmail.com to offer contribu-tion or signup electronically. If questions call 703-462-4841. Contributions can be brought to the Parish Office kitchen Mon-day through Friday between 8:30- 3:30 labeled "Carpenter’s Shelter" and placed in refrigerator, freezer, or counter. If deliv-ering on the day of dinner, bring to Father Ray Hall between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. If bringing food directly to Carpenter’s Shel-ter, label clearly “OLQP Dinner, Sept 17” and call them to let them know you’re dropping off. If you are able to bring meat-loaf or potatoes on the day of dinner and can bring them warm, that’s a huge help in re-heating at shelter. The date for moving back to the new shelter (with new full kitchen!) is fast approaching; we can’t wait to see it.

CAMBIO DE HORA PARA LA MISA DEL SÁBADO, 26 DE SEPTIEMBRE, PARA LAS 5:30PM - Debido a las Misas de Con-firmación y la necesidad de desinfectar la iglesia después de cada Misa, es necesario cambiar la hora de la Misa el sábado, 26 de sep-tiembre para las 5:30pm. Mucho antes del Covid-19, la oficina del Obispo Burbidge programó las Misas de Confirmación con OLQP para las 10am y las 2pm el 26 de septiembre. Las familias recibieron la notificación y todos se apuntaron para esas Misas. Para acomo-dar las Misas de Confirmación, cambiaremos la hora de nuestra Misa de vigilia para las 5:30pm solamente para esa fecha, el 26 de septiembre. Pedimos disculpas por cualquier inconveniencia que esto pueda causar.

RITO DE INICIACIÓN CRISTIANA PARA ADULTOS (RICA) ¿Qué diferencia marca Dios en mi vida? El RICA es un proceso gra-dual de formación para quienes buscan una relación más profunda con Dios y un mejor entendimiento de la fe católica. Ya esté usted empezando su jornada de fe, ya esté bautizada/o en otra tradición cristiana y quiere explorar el catolicismo o busca la preparación sacramental, el RICA es el camino. Debido a las restricciones del COVID-19, nos reuniremos virtualmente usando Zoom. La jornada comienza con una sesión de investigación “sin obligación” el lunes, 19 de octubre, a las 7pm. ¡Únase a nosotros! LOS EFECTOS DE LA TORMENTA LAURA EN HAITÍ

A partir del 29 de agosto el gobierno de Haití reportó que 31 haitia-nos murieron a causa de Laura, que llegó a Haití como una tormen-ta tropical hace dos fines de semana antes de convertirse en el hu-racán que azotó Louisiana. Lamentablemente, otros 8 haitianos desaparecieron y muchos resultaron heridos. En Medor no hubo muertes. Algunas cosechas y edificios sufrieron daños y algunos hogares se inundaron. El camino a Medor, que ya era peligroso, fue afectado. Pero Père Frantz, párroco de la parroquia St. Joseph, es-cribió, “Gracias a Dios, los daños en Medor no fueron tan grande como pudieron haber sido”.

OLQP IS GOING GLEANING – come join us!! There is an opportunity to go gleaning at the First Market in Vienna VA on Saturday, October 3. Signup will be required because of Covid 19. We will have two groups of 10-15 peo-ple so distancing and safety can be observed. This is a great outdoor activity for family and friends. Interested? YOUTH MINISTRY: 7th- 12th graders, join Us! The new pro-

gram year begins Sunday September 13th. We meet on Sunday

evenings at 7:00pm via Zoom. Monthly series packets will be

available for pick-up starting this Sunday. The first series is on

Friendship. Regularly scheduled service projects and outside

gatherings are also planned. The first project is supporting the

“GET OUT THE VOTE” Postcard efforts. Our first outing is

gleaning on October 3rd. Also new this year will be a bi-

monthly teen bible study on Tuesday evenings, beginning Sep-

¡LA CLÍNICA MÉDICA GRATUITA MOTHER OF MERCY NE-CESITA VOLUNTARIOS! Por favor ayude a las Caridades Católi-cas a ayudar a los pobres al ofrecerse de voluntaria/o – allí o desde la casa – con Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinics. CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD (CLW) We will be starting CLW sessions through zoom starting

September 13 until we are able to return to celebrate in

person. Sessions will take place during the Sunday

10:00am Mass in English and the 2:00pm Mass in Spanish.

Families can find the 2020 CLW calendars with the dates of

the online sessions as well as the Zoom link to join the ses-

sion on the Parish’s website.

RELAUNCH OF THE FOOD SECURITY TEAM -- As

our busy food pantry serves more than 550 families a week

and the Administration proposes further food program

budget cuts, we are looking to relaunch the food security

team. The team has been on hiatus after our long-term

lead retired and moved out of the area. If you are interest-

MATTHEW 25, NO MORE DONATIONS AT THIS TIME -- As always, your generosity shows no bounds. We

are literally overwhelmed with new donations and cannot accept anymore. The bins will be closed after this weekend in the hopes of getting a handle on the number of items donated in such a short time. We will reopen the bins for Winter clothing beginning on Saturday, September 19th. We will continue to have Saturday collection for winter clothing from that date on. JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO… In the Gospel this weekend

Jesus is essentially talking about mending relationships, about restoring that which has been broken. And when I think about broken relationships I tend to think about “shalom”. The Hebrew word “shalom” we often translate into English as “peace” but as so often happens in translation, so much is lost when we trans-late from one language to another! “Shalom” means so very much more than just peace, so much more than just absence of war.

Shalom means happiness, good health, prosperity, friendship and well-being, and right-relationship with God and with your neighbor…so much more!

In today’s Gospel, in a very real way Jesus is talking about shalom, about working to restore the ancient roots of our relationships with one another, recognizing that we are sister and brother, that we are bound to each other in and through our creation by God. Jesus recognizes that we hurt one another and that we must seek to repair the injuries, and to seek and to offer forgiveness. We must work to forgive and to restore what was taken or destroyed as well as be willing to be healed of the hurt and the suffering that was inflicted upon us. We must be willing to “be SHALOM” for the world -- not for ourselves -- but for the sake of the world!

Shalom means “Black Lives Matter”, Shalom means racial equali-ty, Shalom means a recognition of our common sisterhood and brotherhood of our interconnectedness that flows through our very veins. It is a recognition of our common lineage; our com-

mon ancestry as the children of God made from the dust of the earth and given life by the very breath of God.

Shalom mean there is no place for white supremacy and white privilege -- a world where we value one person over another based on the color of their skin or the place of their birth, their sexual orientation, their socioeconomic status, their gender or their immigration status!

Shalom means that I must stand up against the plague and sin of racism and bigotry, that I must demand an end to the systemic racism that infects our institutions both private and governmen-tal, secular and sacred!

Shalom means that I am called to stand back and reflect on my own biases in how I treat my sisters and brothers, how and what I think of them in the recesses of my heart!

When we wish “Shalom” to someone we wish happiness, good health, prosperity, friendship, and well-being, and right-relationship with God and with all our neighbors…and so much more! You and I are called “TO BE SHALOM” to and for all of our sisters and brothers, and for the world itself! In the midst of all that is happening in the world today we hear the clarion call for total racial equality. In the midst of the pandemic, in the midst of economic suffering, in the midst of all of the suffering of our sis-ters and brothers, how can I “BE SHALOM” in my family, my work, my school, my community, my country? study of ISAIAH beginning Saturday, September 12th. We will use the Little Rock Scripture Study as our guide. The program does require some reading before each class, but nothing too time consuming. There are no prerequisites. The heart of the program is in the shared discussion that allows us to bring our own experience to bear on the scriptures. Each lesson consists of reading the book together, listening to the CD lecture from Little Rock and then group discussion. A burst of bright yellow feathers flitted out of the Black-eyed Susans as my

bike stopped by a tiny meadow. The striking features of the male American

goldfinch are so delightful any time, but a special treat in the middle of a ce-

ment sidewalk entrance to a suburban high school. Meet my native plant gar-

den at John R. Lewis High School in Springfield, VA.

As “progress” and development lead to more impervious surfaces and loss of

habitat for native flora and fauna, it is comforting that we can take simple

steps to breathe more life and biodiversity into our environment. Native

plants consistently produce large increases in native insect and bird popula-

tions when replacing non-native species. I feel called to leave a trail of native

plants in my wake as I meander through adulthood.

Native plants are uniquely suited to thrive in the soil and climate conditions

where they originated. Most are perennial, reseeding and multiplying with a

one-time investment of money and planting time. In the correct location, they

will survive with normal amounts of rainfall and sun, occasionally needing an

extra drink during heat waves and droughts.

In the web of life, native birds depend on insects to provide food to their

young. Pollinators and other insects have adapted over time to depend on

native plants to reproduce, and in some cases, depend on one type of plant for

survival. The anatomy of an insect –– specializes to the shape, size, and color

of native plants. Now let’s return to the native plant demonstration garden at

Lewis High School. When I saw the abandoned planter at the auditorium en-

trance, I envisioned an ecological, aesthetic, and educational opportunity.

With administrative support and help from the garden club, we installed 14

different varieties of native plants that I divided from my yard in May 2019.

Plants were selected based on sun conditions, a balance of flowers and foliage,

and continuous three-season blooms. I periodically watered the plants last

summer so they could become established.

This spring and summer I have seen the fruits of biodiversity in the school’s

eight square feet meadow garden. As the world came to a pandemic induced standstill, it quietly brought beauty

and hope to a forgotten patch of soil. When I visit I see bees pollinating the flowers and several species of butter-

flies and ladybugs. In addition to goldfinches, I suspect that other birds have found abundance in the garden.

I have put very little time into the native plant garden this season. There is no exposed soil, no need for mulch and

little need for weeding. Remarkably, I did not water at all during a very hot and dry July. I am thrilled with the

potential of this little meadow, and I can’t wait for the students to come back to school and enjoy the show.

Rebuilding a Dignified Post-COVID World

This Labor Day is a somber one. The COVID-19 pandemic goes on. Economic circumstances for so many families are stressful or even dire. Anxiety is high. Millions are out of work and wondering how they will pay the bills. And for work-ers deemed “essential” who continue to work outside the home, there is the heightened danger of exposure to the vi-rus. Yet, as Pope Francis points out in a set of beautiful and challenging reflections on the pandemic, “In this wasteland, the Lord is committed to the regeneration of beauty and rebirth of hope: ‘Behold, I am doing something new: right now it is sprouting, don’t you see it?’ (Is 43:19). God never abandons his people, he is always close to them, especially when pain becomes more present.”1 As God declares to John in Revelation: “Behold, I make all things new” (Rev. 21:5). God knows the challenges we face and the loss and grief we feel. The question to us is this: will we pray for and willingly par-ticipate in God’s work healing the hurt, loss, and injustice that this pandemic has caused and exposed? Will we offer all we can to the Lord to “make all things new?”

As public reports show, the virus has spread widely among essential workers such as meat packers, agricultural workers, healthcare providers, janitors, transit workers, emergency responders, and others. As a result, low wage work-ers, migrant workers, and workers of color, have borne a disproportionate share of the costs of the pandemic. Before the pandemic, a significant number of Americans were trapped in low wage jobs, with insecurity around food, housing, and health care, and with little opportunity for savings or advancing in their career. Those same workers have been hit particularly hard, and, it is devastating to say, many have paid with their life. As one New York subway worker put it, “We are not essential. We are sacrificial.”2

These words, and the reality behind them, should haunt us. As Pope Francis pointed out at the beginning of his pontificate, “today we also have to say ‘thou shalt not’ to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills.”3 What was wrong before the pandemic has been accelerated now. What may have been hidden to some is now revealed. Against this backdrop, the murder of George Floyd was like lighting a match in a gas-filled room. Pope Francis writes of the pandemic:

We are all frail, all equal, all precious. May we be profoundly shaken by what is happening all around us: the time has come to eliminate inequalities, to heal the injustice that is undermining the health of the entire hu-man family!4

The Holy Father is now using his weekly general audience as an occasion for catechesis on Church teaching on inequali-ties that have been aggravated by the pandemic.5

The dignity of the human person, made in the image and likeness of God, is not at the center of our society in the way it should be. In some workplaces, this has meant an emphasis on profits over safety. That is unjust. Consumerism and individualism fuel pressures on employers and policy makers that lead to these outcomes.

The good news is that injustice does not need to have the last word. The Lord came to free us from sin, including the sins by which we diminish workers and ourselves. “This is the favorable time of the Lord, who is asking us not to

conform or content ourselves, let alone justify ourselves with substitutive or palliative logic, which prevents us from sustaining the impact and serious consequences of what we are living.”6 Beginning with our own decisions, we might ask when we buy goods from stores or online: do we know where they came from? Do we know whether the people who made them were treated with dignity and respect? Was the workplace made safe during the pandemic, and did workers receive a just wage? If not, what can we do to remedy this?

Our government also plays an indispensable role. Policy makers must address the outstanding needs that people have around nutrition, housing, health care, jobs and income support, as I and my brother bishops have written repeat-edly.7 People are hurting, and some of the relief measures of previous legislation are expiring. Congress and the White House should reach a deal that prioritizes protecting the poor and vulnerable.

A sign of great hope springing up at the roots is the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), which celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. Founded to do more than meet emergency needs, CCHD supports low-income-led efforts to address poverty, create good jobs and be a force for transformation in families and communities. Over its history, CCHD has distributed over 8,000 grants worth more than 400 million dollars to help create grassroots change. Pope Francis has made the work of the popular movements that CCHD supports a key theme in his pontificate. In April, he again wrote to the leaders of these groups in light of the pandemic, noting how extraordinarily important these movements are at this very moment.8 Unions and workers’ associations have a central role to play as well.

In response to COVID-19, CCHD’s community organizations have quickly amplified their efforts to address its dev-astating impacts. As one example, workers in meat processing plants are faced with dangerous working conditions as companies fail to provide basic protections from COVID-19 or do not make sufficient workplace modifications to reduce risk of exposure to the virus. The CCHD-supported Rural Community Workers Alliance has helped organize workers in rural Missouri, pressuring employers to take these concerns seriously and advancing the dignity of workers.9 These groups, as well as labor unions and other worker associations, make an invaluable contribution to the safety and well-being of workers.

In order to protect the dignity of work and the rights of work-ers, we are each called to practice solidarity with those in harm’s way. In addition, we can offer charitable assistance to all those who have become unemployed during this time by donating to local food banks and Catholic Charities agencies. Catholic Charities helped 13 million people last year, and the demand has increased 30-50% so far during the pandemic and is anticipated to increase. Catholic hospitals are also strained as doctors, nurses, and staff have also been working relentlessly, and have in many instances done so at a loss of significant resources.

Pope Francis is fond of citing the 1964 dogmatic constitution, Lumen Gentium, which reminded us that “no one can save them-selves alone.”10 This is true in this life and the next. The fruits of individualism are clear in the disparities brought to light by this crisis. Through our work of solidarity, let us be a counter-witness to individualism. “Let us not think only of our interests, our vested interests. Let us welcome this time of trial as an opportunity to prepare for our collective future, a future for all without discarding anyone.”11 Let us pray for the grace to participate in God’s work in healing what is so deeply wounded in our society. Let our response to the Psalm at Mass this Labor Day echo in deed and truth: “Lead me in your justice, Lord” (Ps 5:9).

“Yo hago nuevas todas las cosas” (Ap 21, 5) Reconstruir un mundo digno post-COVID19

Este Día del Trabajo es sombrío, la pandemia del COVID-19 continúa. Las circunstancias económicas para tantas familias son es-

tresantes o incluso graves. La ansiedad es alta. Millones de personas están sin trabajo y se preguntan cómo cubrirán sus gastos. Y para

los trabajadores considerados “esenciales” que continúan trabajando fuera del hogar, existe un mayor peligro de exposición al virus.

Sin embargo, como muestra de solidaridad el Papa Francisco en una serie de hermosas y desafiantes reflexiones durante sus cateques-

Como muestran los informes públicos, el virus se ha propagado ampliamente entre los trabajadores esenciales, tales como los empa-

cadores de carne, los trabajadores agrícolas, los proveedores de atención médica, los conserjes, los trabajadores de tránsito, los ser-

vicios de emergencia y otros. Como resultado, los trabajadores con salarios mínimos, los trabajadores migrantes y los trabajadores de

color han tenido que soportar una parte desproporcionada del costo de la pandemia. Previo a esta pandemia, una cantidad significativa

de estadounidenses estaba atrapada en trabajos de salarios mínimos, con inseguridad relacionada con la alimentación, la vivienda y la

atención médica, y con pocas oportunidades de ahorrar o avanzar en su carrera. Esos mismos trabajadores se han visto particularmen-

te afectados y, es devastador decirlo, muchos han pagado aun con sus vidas. Como dijo un trabajador del metro de Nueva York, “No

somos esenciales. Somos expiatorios.”2

Estas palabras, y la realidad detrás de ellas, deberían afligirnos. Como señaló el Papa Francisco al comienzo de su pontificado, “hoy

tenemos que decir 'no a una economía de la exclusión y la inequidad'. Esa economía mata”.3 Lo que estaba mal antes de la pandemia,

ahora se ha acelerado. Lo que pudo haber estado oculto para algunos ahora ha sido revelado. En este contexto, el asesinato de George

Floyd fue como encender un fósforo en una habitación llena de gas. El Papa Francisco escribe sobre la pandemia:

“Todos somos frágiles, iguales y valiosos. Que lo que está pasando nos sacuda por dentro. Es tiempo de eliminar las desigual-

dades, de reparar la injusticia que mina de raíz la salud de toda la humanidad”.4

El Santo Padre está utilizando ahora las audiencias generales semanales (miércoles) como una ocasión para la catequesis sobre la

enseñanza de la Iglesia sobre las desigualdades que se han visto agravadas por la pandemia.5

La dignidad de la persona humana, hecha a imagen y semejanza de Dios, no está en el centro de nuestra sociedad como debería estar.

En algunos lugares de trabajo, esto ha significado un énfasis en las ganancias por encima de la seguridad. Eso es injusto. El consumis-

mo y el individualismo aumentan las presiones sobre los empleadores y los legisladores que conducen a estos resultados.

La buena noticia es que la injusticia no necesita tener la última palabra. El Señor vino a liberarnos del pecado, incluidos los pecados

por los cuales disminuimos a los trabajadores y a nosotros mismos. “Este es el tiempo favorable del Señor, que nos pide no confor-

marnos ni contentarnos y menos justificarnos con lógicas sustitutivas o paliativas que impiden asumir el impacto y las graves con-

secuencias de lo que estamos viviendo”.6 Comenzando con nuestras propias decisiones, podríamos preguntarnos cuando compramos

productos en tiendas o en línea: ¿sabemos de dónde vienen? ¿Sabemos si las personas que las elaboraron fueron tratadas con dignidad

y respeto? En el lugar de trabajo donde se realizaron, ¿tomaron las precauciones necesarias de seguridad durante la pandemia y los

trabajadores recibieron un salario justo? Si no es así, ¿qué podemos hacer para remediarlo?

Nuestro gobierno también juega un papel indispensable. Los legisladores deben abordar las necesidades aún pendientes que tiene la

gente en cuanto a la nutrición, la vivienda, la atención médica, los empleos y el apoyo económico, como yo y mis hermanos obispos

hemos escrito repetidamente.7 La gente está sufriendo y algunas de las medidas de ayuda de la legislación anterior pronto ya no es-

tarán vigentes. El Congreso y la Casa Blanca deberían llegar a un acuerdo que dé prioridad a la protección de los pobres y vulnera-

bles.

Un signo de gran esperanza que brota de raíz es la Campaña Católica para el Desarrollo Humano (CCHD por sus siglas en inglés),

que celebra su 50° Aniversario este año. Fundada para realizar más que solo satisfacer las necesidades de emergencia, la CCHD

apoya los esfuerzos dirigidos por personas de bajos recursos para abordar la pobreza, crear buenos empleos y ser una fuerza de trans-

formación en las familias y comunidades. A lo largo de su historia, la CCHD ha distribuido más de 8,000 subsidios que suman un

total de más de 400 millones de dólares para ayudar a crear un cambio desde la base. El Papa Francisco ha hecho del trabajo de los

movimientos populares que la CCHD apoya un tema clave en su pontificado. En abril, volvió a escribir a los líderes de estos grupos a

la luz de la pandemia, señalando cuán extraordinariamente importantes son estos movimientos en este preciso momento.8 Los sin-

dicatos y las asociaciones de trabajadores también tienen un papel central que desempeñar.

En respuesta al COVID-19, las organizaciones comunitarias de la CCHD han ampliado rápidamente sus esfuerzos para abordar los

impactos devastadores. Por poner un ejemplo, los trabajadores de las plantas procesadoras de carne enfrentan condiciones de trabajo

peligrosas ya que las empresas no brindan protecciones básicas contra el COVID-19 o no hacen las modificaciones suficientes en el

lugar de trabajo para reducir el riesgo de exposición al virus. Rural Community Workers Alliance (La Alianza de Trabajadores de la

Comunidad Rural) apoyada por la CCHD ha ayudado a los trabajadores a organizarse en las zonas rurales de Missouri, presionando a

los empleadores para que tomen en serio estas preocupaciones y promoviendo la dignidad de los trabajadores.9 Estos grupos, así co-

mo los sindicatos y otras asociaciones de trabajadores, hacen una contribución invaluable a la seguridad y el bienestar de los trabaja-

dores.

Para proteger la dignidad del trabajo y los derechos de los trabajadores,

todos estamos llamados a practicar la solidaridad con los que se encuen-

tran en peligro. Además, podemos ofrecer asistencia desde la caridad a

todos aquellos que se hayan quedado sin empleo durante este tiempo me-

diante donaciones a los bancos de alimentos locales y las agencias de

Catholic Charities (Caridades Católicas). Catholic Charities USA ayudó a

13 millones de personas el año pasado, y la demanda ha aumentado entre

un 30% y un 50% hasta ahora durante la pandemia y se prevé que continúe

aumentando. Los hospitales católicos también están sobrecargados, ya que

los médicos, las enfermeras y el personal también han estado trabajando

sin descanso y, en muchos casos, lo han hecho con una pérdida significa-

tiva de recursos.

Al Papa Francisco le gusta citar la constitución dogmática de 1964, Lumen

Gentium, recordándonos que “nadie se salva solo”.10 Esto es cierto en esta

vida y en la próxima. Los frutos del individualismo son evidentes en las

desigualdades que esta crisis ha puesto de manifiesto. A través de nuestro

trabajo de solidaridad, seamos testigos en contra del individualismo. “Con

todos, no pensemos sólo en nuestros intereses, en intereses particulares.

Aprovechemos esta prueba como una oportunidad para preparar el mañana

de todos, sin descartar a ninguno: de todos”.11 Oremos por la gracia de

participar en las obras de Dios para sanar lo que está tan profundamente

herido en nuestra sociedad. Dejemos que nuestra respuesta al Salmo en la

Misa este Día del Trabajo resuene en hechos y en verdad: “Condúceme,

Señor, por tu camino santo” (Sal 5, 9).
