MODAL VERBS
Los verbos modales son
verbos auxiliares que
funcionan con un verbo
principal.
El verbo principal va siempre
después del verbo modal y ésta
es la forma correcta de escribirse.
Son Palabras que expresan
obligación, habilidad, consejos,
opinión, prohibición, posibilidad remota.
No se conjugan.
MODALES DE OBLIGACIÓN
• SHOULD = Obligación o Recomendación
• OUGHT TO = Obligación o Recomendación, debería, tendría.
Sinónimo Should en forma educada.
• MUST =Obligación, Prohibición o Necesidad
• HAVE TO = Obligación que viene de fuera, impuesta por una institución, una ley, una autoridad.
Estructuración
• Afirmativas: Sujeto + Verbo modal + verbo principal + complemento
• Negativas: Sujeto + Verbo modal not (n’t) + verbo principal + complemento.
• Interrogativas (yes – no): Verbo modal + Sujeto + verbo principal+ complemento ?
• Interrogativas Wh: Wh + Verbo modal + Sujeto + verbo principal+ complemento ?
AFIRMACIÓN
• En una afirmación, el orden de las palabras es:
sujeto + verbo modal + verbo principal.
•You have to be 18 to take the driving test in Mexico.
INTERROGACIÓN
• En preguntas, el orden de las palabras cambia:
verbo modal + sujeto + verbo principal.

PREGUNTAS
• Con preguntas (Wh- questions).
Wh- + Verbo modal + sujeto + verbo principal
• When Should she go to my home ?
PREGUNTAS NEGATIVAS
• Al formar preguntas, el verbo modal y el adverbio negativo siempre se contraen.
• Verbo modal + not + sujeto + verbo principal
• Shouldn´t you rest?
FRASES CON NEGACIÓN
• En frases negativas, el adverbio negativo not se mete entre el verbo modal y el verbo principal.
• Sujeto + verbo modal + not + verbo principal
• They should not drive at night
• El modal must indica una recomendación o una obligación. Así, lleva la misma significación que Tienes o Tienen .
• You must see this movie.
• Laura must see a doctor immediately.
• En las preguntas informativas, el modal must indica una obligación y puede ser sinónimo con should. En america should es mucho más corriente en el contexto.
• When should we be there?
• When must we be there?
• ¿Cúando deberemos estar allá?
SHOULD: DEBERIA
• You should call your mother
• I should go home now
OUGHT TO: DEBERIA
• You ought to call your mother
• I ought to go home now.
Los modales should y ought se usan para indicar una obligación. En este contexto, ellos son sinónimos. Recordemos que ought es el único verbo modal seguido por un infinitivo.
• En preguntas, se usa should para saber si existe una obligación. En el inglés americano, nunca se usa ought en preguntas.
•Should he call her?
•Should we pay now?
•When should we leave?
• En una frase o una pregunta, un verbo modal siempre está seguido por un verbo principal en su forma base, excepto el verbo modal ought está seguido por un verbo principal en su forma infinitiva.
• Correcto el infinitivo en el verbo modal OUGHT:

INSTRUCTIONS:
• Gather in groups of six
• Divide in two teams: three of you are the “experts” and three are the
ones needing help
• Cut and divide the cards
• The ones needing help take three cards each
• State your case to the “experts”
• Each of the “experts” will give an individual and unique advice
• When all the experts finish giving the advice the ones needing help
will decide which advice is the best.
