Not all that glitters…
“Not all that glitters is gold”, or so goes the saying. While precious metals are experiencing a major revival as investment capital driven by the winds of the economic crisis, jewellery is facing an uphill battle to embrace gold as gleefully as it used to. This precious metal is paying its dues in the new collections. Gold Expressions 2010, and of course the first edition of the Vicenza shows, are the best portrait of how the jewellery industry has decided to handle the current situation. Lots of volume and little weight, a recipe that before “made in Italy” seized it was already being applied by some manufacturers in other markets like Spain, which might have felt the consumer crunch a little sooner. And so silver is beginning to encroach on gold’s territory, a trend that was utterly obvious at the Spanish fair Iberjoya. Plus, design takes precedence over the selection of materials, as was clearly shown at Inhorgenta. The fact is that the demand today matches the reality we are experiencing, and it is a reality that requires us to reflect before choosing and, of course, spending our money. Baselworld may well confirm this trend. Whoever can, will not stop consuming luxury goods. But they will also be more demanding, and this attitude serves to cull the market. There will always be those who base their goods on values beyond the intrinsic price of the raw materials or the fact that a brand is the latest media darling. It’s time to reinvent ourselves, especially jewellery, and to reinvent gold.

No somos profetas.
Debemos crecer disfrutando y disfrutar creciendo.
cumplen

_maqueta 185.indd 8 2/3/10 18:40:53
We are not prophets. Yet we’re right all too often. We predicted it some time ago, and now it’s happening. Jewellery has ceased to be the exclusive domain of what we called the jewellery industry. Today it extends even further. It is part of a lifestyle and as such it can be found in fashion shops, accessories boutiques and more. These are places that welcome a group of consumers that is anything but uniform, consumers who are relaxed and lively and like to meet their needs right when they feel them. Museums, design shops, galleries and gift shops are yet more places where you can find jewellery and watches.
We have to be keenly aware that tastes are diverse and must be satisfied. For this reason, the
presentation has to fit in with the time and the packaging has to fit in with the presentation. Therefore, to handle today’s situation, training – our training – has to go beyond the purely technical aspects. It has to focus more on how to communicate and purvey our wares in all kinds of ways: either directly to the retailer or from the retailer to the consumer. Here is where we need better training. Presentation, shop windows, display cases: they must all be exquisitely wrought according to the audience we are targeting.
Jewellery and watches are now ruled by trends, by shapes, by colours. Nothing escapes every
individual’s particular lifestyle. The important part is knowing how to find our niche, our specific product and our own way of communicating it. All of this requires painstaking preparation to ensure that we don’t fail in the attempt. Today the world is global; nothing is local anymore. Companies are the ones that have to adapt to the circumstances, not the opposite. And so we are facing new challenges. We also have to design the decorations, and here anything goes as long as it fits in with the setting.
Today we can regard consumers as permanent tourists, because even if they
never leave their desks, they travel all around the world online. Now the nature and essence of the object are what count. Our goal must be to create testimonial pieces. There is a need to create something specific that adapts to the user throughout their entire lifetime. Each piece has to be part of the instantaneous environment that reinterprets the wearer’s personality. We have to enrich the everyday landscape and the mystery of night. Our pieces today must have their own language. Today jewellery must be grounded on freedom.
Those in the know say that only the person who likes what they do and does what they like is truly free. So the goal is to create with originality and affordable prices and with bold, impactful communication campaigns using the right sales strategies, either in-house or multi-channel, with a nonconformist, highly creative spirit in full alignment and complicity with the customer.
We have to grow enjoying and enjoy growing. And we must
do it with a huge dose of functionality, always at the service of the customer. Adapting to the new times requires us to show an updated, revamped image. The image will catapult us towards a profound, immanent business essence that is capable of generating rafts of utility or “usability”, as they say, in our environment.
Predictions that come true

Like the seaTotal white surrounded by the blue firmament. That’s how romantic this summer’s woman is, and that’s how romantic the jewellery and watches chosen are, brimming with light and the taste of the sea. Spaniard ÓSCAR RODRÍGUEZ unveils this likable piece featuring Baroque pearls and white gold, accompanied by diamonds and coloured gemstones. ICELINK revealed the Mood model for the first time at Baselworld, whose dial is reminiscent of a dense liquid where all the elements flow harmoniously to the beat of the pulse, even diamonds.

Silvery redFloating fabrics in the most passionate of colours. Silks that glide over tanned skin with the sensuality that only red boasts. Designers like Georges Chakra dress this summer’s woman in red with a bare hint of silver. BAPALAL KESHAVLAL celebrates this combination with amazing earrings in white gold over which trapezoid-cut rubies and brilliant-cut diamonds frolic. And ELINI makes it all even more provocative with the New Yorker model, a perfect cross between elegance and sensuality.

Made of leather. The man envisioned by Spanish designers Victorio & Lucchino chooses this elegant version of the most summery of men’s looks without losing an iota of personality. To match it, HERMÉS suggests the discrete elegance of a pocket watch, with its model Arceu Pocket Duc Attelé. GELLNER rounds out the look with one of the most irreverent items from the You Rock collection by Marcus Schenkengerg: black silver, black brilliant-cut diamonds and, to balance them out, a coloured Fiji pearl.

This exceptional piece belongs to Maurice-Ives Sandoz’s private collection and has just come out of
the Parmigiani restoration workshop. This Fabergé peacock egg needed the most painstaking attention
and care by Michel Parmigiani and his team, for whom restoration has always remained at the core of this watchmaking brand. Thanks to this mission,
the automaton now works harmoniously once again; the peacock moves on two legs and displays its tail
feathers. The meticulous retouching on the enamel of each feather has returned the piece to its former glory. Michel Parmigiani claims that “a restored work should
not betray the past”.

Nabucco ‘Va, Pensiero’ by RAYMOND WEIL
Known for its bold design, the Nabucco collection is joined by a new piece forged in titanium. The Nabucco “Va, Pensiero”, which shares the collection’s mythical shapes, embodies the energy and nobility with which Verdi infused his opera.
On the outside, a very sober case measuring 46 mm in diameter and a round bezel with tachometric scale, both sculpted in titanium. Immersed in a sandy grey colour, three subwinders (30 minutes at 3, 12 hours at 6 and a second half at 9) and a date window are located in the middle of the dial, harmoniously integrated into it. Inside, the ETA 7753 tri-compax movement, with automatic winding and 28,800 vibrations per hour, ensures the precision and reliability of this masculine chronograph. Finally, the bracelet is made of crocodylus niloticus leather. The Nabucco “Va, Pensiero” is a mature, elegant piece, faithful to the collection that gave it its name and faithful, too, to the noble, energetic spirit with which Verdi imbued his famous opera.
Torpedo Pirata Crono Day Date Moon Phaseby CUERVO Y SOBRINOS
After the success of its Torpedo Pirata collection, this year the Swiss watchmaking company Cuervo y Sobrinos reveals its true Latin soul by launching the new model, Torpedo Pirata Day-Date Moon Phase, limited to 200 pieces.
Just like the rest of its “siblings”, the Torpedo Pirata Crono Day Date Moon Phase has a modular case made up of rings in different materials, a distinctive feature of the collection. Bronze, titanium, burnished and polished steel, once painstakingly assembled, bring to life the form of a 17th century canon. The buttons evoke the shape of a harquebus opening and the crown is reminiscent of a globe. Its movement, calibre CyS 3055, is visible through the sapphire crystal back with anti-reflective coating decorated with the CyS coat-of-arms featuring two crossed swords, a nod to the pirate inspiration of the collection. In this way, Cuervo y Sobrinos pays tribute to its Cuban roots, an island that was also the domain of pirates and corsairs, helping to re-creating the legend.

Diamond Flower Prestige Edition by PERRELET
In Basel, from the 18th to 25th of March, Perrelet presented the world premiere of a new pair of Diamond Flowers models in black and white ceramic. Their main feature: the diamonds are set on the double rotor patented by Perrelet.
This picture shows one of the new Diamond Flower Prestige Edition watches with an 18-carat rose gold case with bezel, hands and case set with diamonds. The bracelet is a real must thanks to the chocolate-coloured crocodile skin. It is one of the recent additions to this women’s collection by Perrelet which was awarded as Watch of the Year by the Swiss public in 2008. The identity of these watches is clear from the bold setting attached to the base of the double rotor, a patented complication. The precious stones not only turn this watch into a piece of jewellery, the visible mass of the dial, shaped into a lotus flower, is joined with and synchronises perfectly with the self-winding rotor mechanism and provides additional energy to the movement of the mechanism.
Pontos Décentrique Phases de Lune by MAURICE LACROIX
There is no denying that the Pontos Décentrique Phases de Lune has a style all its own. It shares with the rest of the family its explicit intention to stand alone. Its most emblematic feature is unquestionably its special architecture.
The design of its dial is unquestionably quite peculiar, including the off-centre indicator, a veritable reinterpretation of contemporariness in the realm of haute horlogerie. First, a large opening shows the hour disk, located at 10 o’clock and the disks displaying the phases of the moon and day/night at 4 o’clock. The 45 mm titanium case, with a sand-blasted finish, houses a module of the ML 122 complication, developed and manufactured by Maurice Lacroix. The dial is made of a single piece using hot formation technology, and is divided into several levels to provide a hierarchy for reading its functions. This 500-piece limited edition combines refinement with originality, without losing an iota of legibility.

The lotus-eatersJust like in Homer’s Odyssey. In his return to Ithaca from the Trojan War, Odysseus and his men reach an
island, the Island of the Lotophagoi, or Lotus-Eaters. Some of them sample this flower and become addicted to it because it makes them have sweet dreams and forget their past and future. The world of illusion shown on these pages of Arte y Joya is equally addictive. Here, the lotus has
the strength of gold, the gleam of diamonds and the radiant light of coloured gemstones.

150 años de Chopard 150 years of Chopard
The history of Chopard cannot possibly be understood without the Scheufele family, who purchased the company in 1963. Today the second generation, Karl-Friedrich and Caroline, is in charge of several of its divisions. Its business strategy speaks volumes about the glamour surrounding Chopard, a name that honours its past while ruling in the boldest sector of luxury goods. One of the main ingredients of its success is vertical integration. Chopard has as many as 48 offices under its roof. Up to 120 shops and 1,600 points of sale are charged with displaying to the world its savoir-faire based on a respect for tradition, yet also creativity grounded on innovation. Watches like the L.U.C. and the 1000 Miglia, jewellery like Happy Diamonds and fine jewellery are just some of the most outstanding examples.

A very young Louis-Ulysse Chopard founds a high-precision watch manufacturing workshop in Sonvilier, Switzerland, specialised in making pocket watches and chronometers. In the picture, the house where Chopard was founded (photo taken in around 1900).
Louis-Ulysse unveils the first advertising for the first L.U.C. watchmaker, Chopard. Back then he had customers as far away as Eastern Europe, Russia and Scandinavia, Tsar Nicholas II being one of them. Soon the second generation would take over the reins.
Karl Scheufele I (Pforzheim, Germany, 1877) sends his son, Karl Scheufele II, to New York for two years with 50 dollars in his pocket. This gives a measure of the entrepreneurial capacity of this watch and jewellery maker, who also created the brand Eszeha.
The 1920s was the decade of Art Nouveau, which also influenced watchmaking, and Chopard and Scheufele adopt this trend, too (in the picture, models from the company Eszeha). In a Europe in upheaval, the fates of both families were about to converge.
_maqueta 185.indd 63 2/3/10 18:47:23
Wanting to manufacture his own movements, Karl Scheufele III decides to buy a Swiss watchmaker. He reaches an agreement with the third generation of Chopard. Under his vitality, the company is revived. In the picture, advertising from the 1960s.
Karl Scheufele receives the Golden Rose in Baden-Baden, regarded as the Oscar of the jewellery industry. Chopard wins 15 trophies in the 1970s, including the one for its Happy Diamonds in 1976. New trends begin to emerge in the world of watches and jewellery.
In the 1970s, the Chopard look draws from the company’s Art Deco roots, although it also turns out to be polymorphic. The sensual, sparkling spirit of 1968 confers on its watches a boldness of shape coupled with the beauty of stones, such as the first Happy Diamond watch.
The start of the decade is marked by two new executives joining Chopard: Karl’s children Caroline and Karl-Friedrich. Each interprets the family tradition in his or her own way, the former with jewellery and the latter with watches. Both appear in the picture.

The company goes back to its roots and founds a watchmaking workshop in Fleurier, in the Swiss canton of Jura, devoted to producing mechanical L.U.C. movements. One year later, the company launches its first model with its own 1.96 calibre, the L.U.C. 1860.

“Follow your convictions”. That’s the new motto of Maurice Lacroix which is backed by three ambassadors who, just like this watchmaking company, have never abandoned their convictions on their pathways to success. A unique slogan for a luxury brand that also stands on its own.
“Follow your Convictions” doesn’t sound like a typical motto for a
luxury watchmaker. But the fact is that Maurice Lacroix is not your
average watch company. The essential fact is that it has never
abandoned its convictions in its pathway to success, and now
the company wants to reaffirm this once again by presenting
three new ambassadors, also unusual individuals, who are
directly linked to the Swiss watchmaker because of their undying
loyalty to their own beliefs.

The spiritof adventure
There is something that mankind will never give up: the spirit of adventure. One of the most legendary and tragic adventures was Scott’s journey to the South Pole.

Paloma Picasso has designed suggestive yet
elegant tear-shaped earrings for Tiffany & Co.
made of polished yellow quartz set in 18-carat
gold. They were worn by tennis player Maria
Sharapova at the Australian Open held last
January in Melbourne. Maria, thrilled with the
earrings, admitted when talking about Pablo
Picasso’s daughter that she “admires her style
and reputation as a fashion icon. It’s a huge
pleasure for me to wear these elegant earrings
on the court.”
In fact, tear- and drop-shaped earrings are
totally trendy right now. The singer Rihanna
combined elegant earrings featuring white
and grey diamonds, the ones called “Gocce”
from De Grisogono, with an edgy haircut.
The result is utterly sexy, as seen last
January in Cannes at the 2010 NRJ Music
Awards. Contemporary design also
contributes to this revival, which even
includes platinum under the prism of
Tom Rucker, dynamic, complex lines
that reveal the influence of rugged
landscapes.

An aesthetic tendency is also proving very successful which
reflects the variety of the ecosystems and their raw and
even poetic beauty. Jewellery is filled, on one hand, with
tribal shapes, primitive textures, opaque stones and organic
materials in order to produce articles that almost become
amulets. On the other hand, subtle and refined finishings
prevail, with finely cut crystalline gems, which are expressions
of such a pure and beautiful nature that they almost border on
perfection.

Jewellery has recovered from that very special decade some
of its most fascinating elements. Large rings with pavés of
diamonds, gilded pearls, crystalline stones, velvety services
and soft colours. These are opulent pieces of jewellery,
proud of their condition and richly decorated, which can also
easily accompany the man who wears them on his cuffs with
distinction, but above all with an aura of power. Luxury with
certain decadent touches is more fashionable than ever.

Just like Armand Basi’s fashion, the watches from this
Spanish company are designed as yet another accessory,
living elements that should be updated every season and that
adapt to a market that is increasingly aware of the trends and
demanding with its aesthetic criteria. One example is this men’s
model shown on this page, Digirow, a multi-function watch that
combines analogical and digital time-telling. Its square steel
case, black dial and black leather strap are set off by the details
in two colours to choose from: blue and red. A sporty spirit
without sacrificing a classical touch, just the way the Armand
Basi man likes it.

Auratam, from the Indian company Bapalal Keshavlav,
celebrates the spirit of the artisan engraver on gold and the
ethereal presence of female muses. The very name of the
collection comes from the Latin word Aurum, or gold, and the
Hindi/Urdu term for women, Aurat, a duo of inspirations that
complement each other to re-create feelings like pleasure and
voluptuousness. Bapalal Keshavlal thus gives today’s woman
exclusive, charismatic jewellery that brings back the
old Indian gold-working tradition with a peerless
contemporary touch. Founded in 1939, early in this
century the company had the privilege of displaying

IberjoyaChange in dates
The first edition of Iberjoya in 2010 was held from the 4th
to 8th of February. It featured a change in date – February
instead of January – and the unveiling of a new format
aimed at highlighting trendy jewellery collections and
placing innovative and trendsetting contents in the limelight.
The show was held jointly with Bisutex and Intergift, which
this time were also joined by the International Fashion
Salon of Madrid (SIMM). This conjunction of fairs meant
that for several days, Ifema was the most comprehensive
venue for fashion, luxury and gifts around. Almost 300
exhibitors with a heavy presence in the market took part
in Iberjoya, showing a competitive range of goods with
silver as the unquestioned superstar. In watches, the new
trends spotlighted dials with gemstones, and especially the
colourful watches so popular with today’s consumers. The
February edition of Iberjoya showed that the Spanish sector
is poised to rise to the challenges of market with a range of
goods in line with today’s needs.

Vicenzaoro First was the first fair to be held in 2010, and many
sights were set on it to ascertain the evolution and expectations
of this Italian event, as well as the impression that the sector
left. The launch of the Vicenzaoro First fair could not have been
better: almost 18,000 accredited operators left the little over
13,000 who participated in the 2009 edition in the dust. The
uncertainties aroused in the international jewellery/watch market
gradually lifted after the doors of this Vicenza show closed. What
stood out was the hegemony of silver in much of the market in
voluminous yet lightweight pieces and increasingly bold, creative
designs. Also prominent were Glamroom, Gold Expressions and
T-Gold. From the 22nd to 26th of May, Vicenza has yet another
event in the jewellery industry, Charm, where “made in Italy” is
decked out with the best jewellery featuring unique style and
design, confirming the fact that Italian creativity is once again
setting the jewellery trends in the international market. The major
actors in the industry will be at Vicenzaoro Charm in May.

OroArezzoNew airs for a classic
This year, OroArezzo presents a new edition characterised by
change. It has a new director, Raul Barbieri, a new name for the
event organiser, Arezzo Fiere e Congressi – formerly Centro Affari
e Convegni – and an ambitious new goal: to re-launch Arezzo
as a top-notch event in the trade fair and congress market, a
benchmark in the world jewellery industry. The profound overhaul
in OroArezzo will be visible in its April edition, with an updated
exhibition structure, an extremely strong promotional programme
to encourage the arrival of foreign buyers, 250 of which have
been especially selected, 140 of them from Europe and 60 from
America. This edition will also feature Prémiere, which is quite
popular among visitors. The Oro d’Autore exhibition will spotlight
the 500 years since the birth of Giorgio Vasari. OroArezzo is
focusing on a new trade fair formula, without losing sight of its
main feature: the range of goods by operators in the Arezzo
region, one of the most important in the world with more than
1,500 manufacturers employing more than 10,000 people,
unquestionably OroArezzo’s main strength.

This young businessman, who hails from and works in Taxco,
is at the helm of one of the most popular jewellery companies
in Mexico, D’Escorcia. In 2008, he unveiled the first collection
bearing his name, featuring sculptural shapes that re-create a
highly personal universe. Volume is the common thread in his
work, which is inspired by nopal and the arid vegetation of his
country.

Samuel Burstein
This Mexican designer launched his own line, Sb Collection, in
2002, where his exotic, avant-garde and elegant style rooted
in Art Nouveau shines through. He combines colour and the
beauty of coloured gemstones and pearls on gold, silver and
other metals. His aesthetic shapes celebrate and interpret nature
thanks to his markedly organic style.
Gabriela says that “my desire is to design jewellery and ensure
that the person wearing it feels connected to a world of dreams,
where we each create our own story”. The jewellery trade runs
through her veins – she belongs to the third generation of a family
of jewellery-makers – and she likes working with natural stones,
and especially with amber from Chiapas, “which is our own and is
a pleasure to design with”.

Rafaella Mannelli has participated in the privilege of pavilion B1
at the fair in Vicenza, Italy last January for the first time, after
showing her wares in Glamroom, the pavilion closest to fashion
and trends, for several editions. This move has a great deal to
do with the innate elegance of her creations, veritable organic
sculptures where wood plays off gold and diamonds, creating a
dialect all their own.
Rafaella Mannelli, née Ricci, was born in Arezzo in 1965. She
was around jewellery from a young age at her uncle’s factory, and
she absorbed the rich artistic and cultural tradition of this lovely
region in Italy. After her marriage to Alessio
Mannelli, they both decided to found their
own company in 1998, moving to Borgo San
Lorenzo, near Florence. Shortly thereafter, in
2002, the first Rafaella Mannelli collection was
unveiled. Natural materials, geometric shapes
and provocative presentation give shape to a
unique way of seeing and feeling jewellery, and
they easily identify her creative talent.

Honouring an initiative she has been hosting

artists have widely divergent provenances and
styles.
The cycle begins with Australian Claire
Taylor, whose jewellery captures impressions
of fragile materials on metal. She is followed
by the creative duo Isabel & Canseco from
Oviedo, Spain, who practise creative jewellery
based on the expressiveness of natural stones.
After them come Catalan Vladimir Papulles,
who will display jewellery like this piece, from
his Jenga collection (Swahili for “construct”).
Finally, the series will be closed by another
Catalan, Marta Boan, with her subtle, delicate
