As your county supervisor, I havetaken an environmental focus byintroducing new Environmental

Stewardship Goals. We have created the CorteseClimate Kids Club (for information about howyour children can join, visit my website atwww.supervisorcortese.org). Being environ-mentally responsible is something everyoneshould strive for, and this includes getting thekids ready to go back to school. Normally theapproach is routine: ensuring their clothes fitand are clean and presentable, checking thebackpack to make sure it can carry anotheryear’s worth of textbooks, and heading to theoffice supply store to pick up any school sup-plies that they need. This year, I encourage youto take a look at how you can make going backto school more environmentally friendly. Oneof the easiest changes to make would happenwhen you prepare your kid’s lunches. While theaverage person doesn’t think about where wastegoes after the garbage man picks it up, ourwaste is a serious issue with landfills runningout of space and contaminants leaking out of thelandfills that we do have. A straightforward wayto be more environmentally friendly is to simplyuse reusable containers and utensils for yourkid’s lunches.

Brown paper bags, while not completelyunfriendly, still add volume to our waste stream.A better method is to use a reusable lunch bagor pail and put the sandwiches or leftovers in areusable container that they can bring home to

reuse. Also, include a set of metal spoons andforks to eat with. While single use plastic itemsdo have some benefits for specific circum-stances, teach your kids to think about their im-pact on the environment by explaining to themwhy it is better to bring the reusable containersand utensils home every night rather thanthrowing more plastic and bags into thegarbage.

Due to their nature, school supplies such aspaper and pencils can only be used once. Butyou can minimize the harm to the environmentthrough buying recycled content items and en-suring that after they have served their usefullife, they are recycled. Recycled paper, note-books and folders are becoming commonplace,but there are two key points to keep in mindwhen purchasing them; recycled content isgood, but post-consumer recycled content iseven better, and secondly, be sure to keep thecycle going and put the used products in theproper recycling bin.

Pens and pencils that are refillable are alsobetter for the environment since you can reusethese writing tools by just filling it up with moreink or lead instead of throwing the entire unitaway when its usefulness ends.

Solar calculators have been around foryears and have very real benefits. They can beused for many school years without needingbattery replacements since they don’t use bat-teries. That means less toxic battery chemicalsthat need special handling to be recycled. You

already know you’re not supposed to throw bat-teries in the trash, right?

Lastly, this is the perfect time to get in thehabit of walking or biking with your kid toschool. Not only will you save money, gas andreduce the pollution you create, but you willalso improve your health through increased aer-obic activity. At the same time you are demon-strating to your child on the important benefitsof being active. It’s a win-win.

These are just a few ideas, but I’m sure thatthere are many more that you can think of. Theydon’t just apply to getting kids ready to go backto school. These tips can easily be transferredto working professionals, college students, andmany others. For example, my office was re-cently certified as a “Green Business” by theAssociation of Bay Area Government’s GreenBusiness Program (www.greenbiz.abag.ca.gov)for conserving energy and water, minimizingwaste, preventing pollution and shrinking ourcarbon footprint. Even if you can’t make allthese changes, just trying a few and thinkingabout what else you can do while involvingyour child in making the effort will make aworld of a difference, no pun intended.

concluyó que los hispanos confiaban más enBarack Obama que en los demócratas delCongreso para “hacer lo correcto” en el temade la reforma migratoria.

Según la encuesta, “83% cree queObama “hará lo correcto” en el frente migra-torio; 69% cree que los demócratas harán locorrecto; y sólo 23% cree que los republi-canos harán lo correcto”.

Como candidato presidencial, Obamaprometió concretar esa reforma este año,pero ya indicó que será hasta principios delaño entrante cuando se inicie el debate ci-tando todos los asuntos que hay sobre lamesa: salud, energía, y reformas financieras,entre otros.

Entre ciertos sectores de la comunidadlatina e inmigrante hay descontento con laadministración Obama, con el DHS quedirige Napolitano y con el Congreso,primero por el retraso en abordar el tema mi-gratorio, pero también porque el gobierno seha dedicado a reforzar y ampliar programascentrados en la aplicación de leyes migrato-rias. Ha permitido, por ejemplo, que el al-guacil Joe Arpaio, de Arizona, siga aplicandoel programa 287(g) en el condado de Mari-copa, a pesar del uso de perfiles raciales yotras prácticas discriminatorias.

Downtown San Jose residents andlocal business organizations gath-ered on Saturday, August 15 at Roo-

sevelt Park to create awareness of the goods andservices offered in downtown San Jose.

“We are here because we have a committedgroup of business people and local residents whowant to see this neighborhood come together,”said Sam Liccardo, Councilmember for SanJose’s District 3.

Liccardo went on to say that the communityis working on providing landscaping and on de-veloping anti-graffiti programs. He also encour-aged residents to visit and use the newcommunity center located at Roosevelt Park.

“Please use our new center,” Liccardo said.“There are many things to do.”

The festival was collaboration between theBusiness Association, the San Jose Redevelop-ment Agency and the City of San Jose.

One of the local businesses available at theevent was Walgreens.

“We are here to provide the community withinformation on the flu shots that will be availableat Walgreens,” said Orlando Cuesta, a managerat the Walgreens located on 17th and Santa Clara

Streets. “The shots will be available starting Septem-

ber 1 and will continue to be available untilMarch of next year.”

There are several options for residents to payfor their flu shots.

“Some people can have their insurance com-panies pay for their flu shots,” Cuesta said.

Cuesta added that he was not sure how manypeople will want the flu shots but that Walgreenswas ready to provide the shots for all those thatneed them.

Established in 1984 as a Neighborhood Busi-ness District, East Santa Clara Street features adiverse collection of nearly 200 restaurants andshops and neighborhood services, including spe-cialty food and clothing stores, pharmacies andpublic health services. To revitalize the neighbor-hood-serving retail area, the San Jose Redevel-opment Agency works with the BusinessAssociation and its members by providing fund-ing and technical support in business develop-ment.

The East Santa Clara Neighborhood Busi-ness Districts is one of eight Neighborhood Busi-ness Districts (NBD) located in a RedevelopmentProject Area. To date, the San Jose Redevelop-ment Agency has invested more than $280 mil-lion in the NBDs including more than $19

million in the East Santa Clara NBD, leveragingapproximately $54 million. Improvements in theEast Santa Clara area include the renovation ofRoosevelt Park and the construction of HoraceMann School.

Festival Connects Residents and Businesses

With school around, and the econ-omy in a recession, low-incomefamilies throughout Santa Clara

County are beginning to look for ways to get thenecessary school supplies for the upcomingschool year.

Fortunately, the Sacred Heart Community or-ganization is making an effort to help these fam-ilies with its annual Pack-a-Back program. Theevent was held on Friday, August 14, in whichover 1,700 backpacks filled with school supplieswere handed out.

“All the backpacks and all the school sup-plies are new,” said Todd Madigan of Sacred

Heart Community Service. “The supplies in thebackpacks were based on the grade of the stu-dent. We have backpacks for students who areentering kindergarten, to students who are enter-ing the twelfth grade.

The students received notebooks and USBmemory sticks.

“They also received a 20 dollar gift certifi-cate towards a pair of new shoes,” Madigan said.

Registration for the event was held on July29 and Madigan said that people lined up forblocks to register for the backpacks and schoolsupplies.

“I went up to the first people in line andasked them what time they arrived to register andthey told me they showed up at three in the morn-

ing,” Madigan said. “That just shows you howimportant these types of event are to people.”

Madigan added that the registration for thebackpacks reached over 1,700 in three hours.

Community members and organizations do-nated the supplies and the backpacks.

“Religious groups and Boys and Girls clubswere some of the organizations that donated,”Madigan said. “This event gets bigger everyyear.”

In addition, several community membersvolunteered their time to make sure the eventwent smoothly.

“We have about 150 volunteers a day for ourregular programs,” Madigan said. “We’re goingto have an additional 120 volunteers for this par-

ticular event.”Aside from the distribution of backpacks and

school supplies, there were also information andactivity tables from JobLink, Mesa Verde andPolicy and Advocacy. There were also balloons,snacks and activities for the children to take ad-vantage of while waiting to enter the learningcenter.

Students Receive Backpacks

Peter Arellano (MD) es un reconocido Doctor en Medicina Fa-miliar que por ahora ha dejado las salas médicas para ser partede los despachos del concejo municipal de la ciudad de Gilroy.

Desde hace nueve años viene trabajando como funcionario de esta ciudady hoy se encuentra en su cuarto periodo manejando a una ciudad donderecientemente se ha incrementado los problemas de violencia.

Hace unas semanas anunció que se postula para el puesto de Super-visor por el Distrito 1. De ser elegido estaría reemplazando a Don Gagecuyo periodo culmina a fines de 2010.

El Dr. Arellano nació en el Hospital Valley Medical Center en SanJosé. Es hijo de padre mexicano y madre americana y se crió en una fa-milia que básicamente hablaba el español. A pesar de haber nacido eneste país, la oportunidad de hablar un segundo idioma fue importante enel núcleo familiar.

“Ser bilingüe no es solo importante para un político sino paracualquier persona que pueda extender sus servicios a otras comunidadeso desee crecer a nivel personal”, explica Arellano.

Tanto la carrera de funcionario público así como la carrera médicason aparentemente diferentes, sin embargo son carreras que están en-lazadas a una comunidad. El servicio es el principio básico y el DoctorArellano desea continuar con esta misión a la cual ha sido llamado.

“Desde el lado de la política puedo servir a mi comunidad. Tengo ex-periencia en la atención de salud. Conozco la situación por dentro ahorame toca manejar asuntos por fuera”, dijo el galeno.

El Dr. Arellano ofrece una larga experiencia, además considera queen tiempos de crisis es importante buscar otras maneras de conseguir fon-dos más no recortar programas que afecten a la familia.

El Distrito 1 cuenta con una gran número de parques y areas abiertasademás de tierras agrícolas. Actualmente cuenta con una población de330,000 habitantes y abarca el 70 por ciento de la superficie terrestre delCondado de Santa Clara.

El Valle de Almadén, Santa Teresa, y el Valle de Blossom Hill, Gilroy,Los Gatos, Morgan Hill, San Martín, así como Mt. Hamilton y algunaspartes de las Montañas de Santa Cruz pertenecen al Distrito 1.

It’s Back to School Time for SamTrans

ELK GROVE, California

El Departamento de Igualdad en el Empleo y Vivienda deCalifornia (DFEH) anunció hoy que el propietario deAcosta Tacos, Jesús Acosta, ha sido ordenado pagar

$46,645.00 por daños en un caso de discriminación de embarazoen el empleo, el caso fue procesado por el DFEH ante la Comisión deIgualdad de Empleo y Vivienda (Comisión).

Después de dos días de audiencia, la Comisión, en una decisiónprecedente, encontró que el despido de Marina Chávez por AcostaTacos porque ella insistió en su derecho a regresar a trabajar, y en suderecho a amamantar a su bebé, violó el Acta de Igualdad en el Em-pleo y Vivienda (FEHA) la cual prohíbe la discriminación sexual.

“La Sra. Chávez sufrió una grave violación de sus derechosciviles que no se tolera en California,” dijo la Directora del DFEH, PhyllisCheng. “La FEHA garantiza a un empleado que toma licencia pordiscapacidad de embarazo el derecho a regresar a su antiguo puestocuando termina la licencia. Es inconcebible que una madre traba-jadora sea penalizada por la necesidad de alimentar a su bebé reciénnacido, la ley se aseguro de que sus derechos sean protegidos.”

Chávez trabajaba como cajera para Acosta Tacos desde 2004,en Octubre del 2006 Chávez supo que estaba embarazada y debidoa un parto prematuro empezó su discapacidad por su embarazo el30 de Abril del 2007. El 30 de Mayo del 2007, Chávez intentó regresaral trabajo, pero Jaime Acosta le dijo que no podía porque su puestohabía sido cubierto. El 1 de Junio y luego de nuevo el 2 de Junio,Chávez fue llamada a trabajar para cubrir el turno de un empleadoausente. Al darse cuenta el 2 de Junio que Chávez había amaman-

tado a su bebé en su carro durante su descanso la noche anterior,Jaime Acosta le dijo a Chávez que no la quería trabajando mientrasella estuviera lactando - un hecho que admitió en la audiencia de laComisión. Cuando Chávez protestó que necesitaba volver inmedi-atamente a su puesto de trabajo para mantener a su familia, Acostale dijo que no le gustaba su actitud, que ya no la necesitaba, y la de-spidió.

Al encontrar al empresario responsable de discriminación sex-ual, represalias y por no evitar la discriminación, la Comisión ordenóa Jesús Acosta pagarle a Marina Chávez $21,645.00 por sus salariosperdidos, más $20,000.00 para compensar su sufrimiento emo-cional. Asimismo, la Comisión ordenó a Acosta, pagar al Fondo Gen-eral del Estado una multa administrativa de $5,000.00, desarrollaruna póliza escrita en Inglés y Español que prohíba la discriminaciónsexual y por embarazo en el empleo, entrenar a todos los empleadosy supervisores sobre la póliza, y colocar un aviso que declare que laComisión encontró que la empresa violó la FEHA y que le ordenópagar daños y perjuicios.

SACRAMENTO - The state Senate Appropriations Commit-tee tonight approved Assembly Majority Leader AlbertoTorrico’s (D-Fremont) bill to give mothers 30 days to safely

surrender a baby to a designated facility. The bill, AB 1048, was ap-proved 9-3. It would extend the current 72-hour deadline. It nextgoes to the Senate floor.

The Safe Surrender law went into effect in 2001. Parents whoare unable or unwilling to care for their newborn have 72 hours fromthe time of birth to surrender their baby to a designated facility likea hospital or fire station. Thirty states provide more than 72 hours.To increase accessibility to the program, AB 1048 would also allowthe governing boards of fire district agencies to designate Safe Sur-render sites.

“By giving mothers more than just 72 hours to make this ex-tremely important decision, I believe we can save the lives of babiesaround the state,” Torrico said. “We should listen to the experts inpublic safety and the medical community who strongly favor thislegislation.”

AB 1048 is endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians

and Gynecologists, California Medical Association, California Psychi-atric Association, California Professional Firefighters, California FireChiefs Association, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, the Cal-ifornia Catholic Conference and several child abuse councils fromthroughout California.

A 2008 state audit found that over 400 babies have been ille-gally abandoned since 2001 and more than 250 babies have beensafely surrendered during that same span. Some of the barriers tosurrendering a baby within the 72-hour limit include fewer Safe Sur-render designated sites in rural and remote areas. Only half of Cal-ifornia’s counties have designated fire stations as Safe Surrenderfacilities. Fire stations cannot be designated if they are not staffed24 hours a day.

Another problem is insufficient funding has contributed to alack of public awareness about the law. To address this issue, MajorityLeader Torrico is carrying legislation, AB 1049, to allow taxpayers tocheck-off a box on their income tax return forms to voluntarily fundSafe Surrender outreach efforts. AB 1049 was put on the Appropri-ations Committee’s suspense file to be considered later this session.

La organización PETA, defensora de los animales pidió al Al-calde Chuck Reed detener la crueldad a los animales evi-tando el regreso del circo Ringling Brothers a San José.

La organizacion pidió que sea la ultima vez que pase por San José.PETA argumentó que los animales son abusados, física y mentalmente.

La organización mostró un video en el cual se aprecia a los em-pleados del circo usando metales para azotar a los animales y los mal-tratan antes de salir a cualquier presentación.

Según la organización PETA los empleados pegan a los animalesen el rostro o cerca al rostro.

Miembros de PETA protestaron durante la función nocturna quetuvo lugar el pasado 19 de agosto. El grupo también ha establecido susquejas al Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos y ServicioFauna y Marina.

“Nuestra investigación ofrece una prueba más de lo que hemossostenido siempre: Ringling regularmente intimida, golpea, propina láti-gos a los elefantes y a tigres para que realice trucos que son confusasy sin sentido para ellos e incluso doloroso”, dice el Vice Presidente dePETA, Tracy Reiman . “Esta crueldad no debe seguir en San José, ypedimos al alcalde a que adopte una postura en contra de ella.”

El 29 de agosto recogerán viejos televisores

San José, California -La mesa directiva de Santa ClaraValley Transportation Authority (VTA) aprobó acelerar los aumentos de tarifas para empezar en octubre

del 2009, en vez de enero del 2010 con el fin de ayudar al de-scenso del dinero recaudado por los impuestos de las ventas.

Acelerar el aumento de tarifas también incluye los cambiosa las tarifas de paratránsito, servicios de paratránsito, y opcionesen las citas. Se espera que este cambio en la propuesta generaráaproximadamente un millón de dólares. La mesa directivaaprobó el aumento de tarifas la junta que se llevó acabo en juniodel 2009 cuando autorizaron el presupuesto del año fiscal 2010y 2011.

“Ningún miembro de la mesa directiva de VTA toma estadecisión sin haberlo pensado bien,” dijo la Directora de la mesadirectiva de VTA, y miembro del Concejal de Cupertino, DollySandoval. “Comprendemos lo difícil que es económicamentepara nuestros pasajeros, pero también la agencia tiene muchasnecesidades a causa del bajón económico que existe.

Durante las discusiones de presupuestos que hubo en la pri-mavera, el plan económico propuesto fue presentado a cincocomités de asesora de VTA. El comité de asesora de la póliza deVTA, que consiste de 16 concejales que representan ciudades delcondado de Santa Clara, y que recomendaron que sí cambiaranlas tarifas tres meses antes de la fecha que empezara el déficit delpresupuesto. En la junta de la mesa directiva de junio, la mesapidió un estudio para la junta que se llevaría acabo en agosto.

Muchas agencias por todo el estado de California han tenidoque implementar aumento en las tarifas y reducir servicio como

consecuencia que el estado no ha proveído ningunos fondoseconómicos para el transito, al igual que ha habido descenso enlos impuestos asociados con las ventas. Durante el tercer cuartodel año fiscal 2009, los recibos de los impuestos de las ventasbajaron a un 21 por ciento, y esto representó una perdida de 5.8millones de dólares. El presupuesto de VTA que se espera es deuna perdida del 8 por ciento durante la misma época. La últimabaja causa que el presupuesto tenga un déficit más fuerte y queVTA haya estado trabajando fuertemente durante los últimosmeses para encontrar un balance. En junio, había un déficit de30 millones. Con las últimas pérdidas en los meses recientes,hay ahora hay una perdida de 36 millones de dólares.

“El Estado ya no ha dado fondos para el transporte publico,y las ventas de los impuestos de las ventas han bajado bastantedurante la recesión,” dijo Michael T. Burns, Gerente General deVTA. “Hemos implementado muchas estrategias para ahorrardinero, sin embargo necesitamos que ver otras formas de agregardinero para el déficit en el presupuesto que aun esta creciendo.”

Everyone has an opinion on what should andshould not be included in an immigration re-form package that President Barack Obama has

said would be introduced by the end of this year or earlynext year.

On Wednesday, August 19, three community leadersgathered at the Martin Luther King Jr. library in San Joseto discuss what they believe a new immigration reformpackage should include. These leaders were Bill Hing, aProfessor of Law and Asian American Studies, DavidBacon, a prize-winning Bay Area photojournalist, andRichard Hobbs, an immigration attorney and long-timechampion of human, civil and immigrant rights. All three

speakers spoke about their “top ten” suggestions thatshould be included in immigration reform.

There were several issues that all the speakers agreedupon. One was the issue of the North American Free TradeAgreement (NAFTA).

“So much of immigration is forced immigration,” saidDavid Bacon. “We need to find ways to help theeconomies of countries like Mexico develop so that thepeople would not have to leave in order to survive.”

Another suggestion was the elimination of guestworker programs.

“These programs exploit people and tell them theyhave to work in order to stay here,” Bacon said. “Theymake people feel like they are not part of the commu-nity.”

Richard Hobbs agreed with Bacon and added, “Weneed to protect U.S. and immigrant worker and humanrights. We should focus enforcement on real threats liketerrorists and unscrupulous employers, and most impor-tantly, provide a path to citizenship for 12 million undoc-umented immigrants.”

Finally, the speakers talked about the issue of familyunification.

“Many families are broken apart because of our im-migration policy,” Bill Hing said. “We need to expand ourvisa programs so that families stay together.”

Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network(SIREN) sponsored the event and has developed a fiveprinciples guide what is needed to address the immigra-tion issue.

These include: an earned path to legalization for un-documented workers and students, eliminating visabacklogs that keep families apart, giving all workersequal protection under the law, integrating immigrantsinto American society, and ensuring that all basic humanrights are protected.

Todos están a la espera de una reforma, pero tam-bién están con ansias de saber qué incluir dentrodel paquete de una reforma cuya demora está

siendo cada vez más notoria que nunca.El pasado 19 de agosto se llevó a cabo un diálogo entre

tres especialistas de este tema. Bill Hing, Profesor en Leyes yEstudios Asiáticos, David Bacon reconocido periodista y galar-donado por su trabajo de investigación y Richard Hobbs, Di-rector Interino de SIREN y abogado de inmigración.

Los tres oradores hablaron sobre las 10 sugerenciasbásicas que deben ser incluídas en una reforma migratoria.

Uno de los asuntos en el cual estuvieron de acuerdo los

oradores fue el tema del Acuerdo de Libre Comercio en elNorte de América (NAFTA).

“Mucho de la inmigración ha obligado a la inmigración.Tenemos que encontrar formas de ayudar a las economías depaíses como México a desarrollar para que la gente no salgade su país y busque sobrevivir”, dijo David Bacon.

Otra sugerencia fue la eliminación de los programas detrabajadores huéspedes.

“Estos programas son una forma de explotación y dicenque para mantenerse en este país tienen que trabajar “, ex-plica Bacon. “Ellos hacen sentir a la gente que no son partede la comunidad.”

Richard Hobbs, coincidió con Bacon y añadió: “Tenemosque proteger a EE.UU. y los trabajadores inmigrantes y los

derechos humanos. Debemos enfocarnos en las amenazasreales como son los terroristas e inescrupulosos empleadoresy también proveer un camino a la ciudadanía a los 12 millones de indocumentados”.

Por último, los expositores hablaron sobre el asunto dela reunificación familiar.

“Muchas familias se separan por nuestra política de in-migración”, dijo Bill Hing. “Tenemos que ampliar nuestra visade programas para que las familias permanezcan juntos.”

La red de Servicios, Educación y Derechos de los Inmi-grantes (SIREN) ha desarrollado cinco principios para guiarlo que se necesita en el asunto de inmigración.

Estos incluyen: ganar un camino a la legalización paratrabajadores indocumentados y los estudiantes, eliminar los

retrasos de visados en las familias, otorgar a todos los traba-jadores la igualdad de protección bajo la ley, a la integraciónde los inmigrantes en la sociedad americana, y garantizarque todos los derechos humanos fundamentales estén pro-tegidos.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF- For a limited time, the SantaClara County Department of Child Support Services is offeringparents with their driver’s license suspended for non-payment

of child support an opportunity to get it restored. The “Get Back on theRoad Again” public awareness program is available to parents with childsupport cases in all California counties. It’s a collaborative effort of theCalifornia State Department of Child Support Services, the Child SupportDirectors Association, and the local child support agencies in each of theCalifornia Counties.

“We invite parents who have not fulfilled their child support obli-gations to take advantage of this opportunity to reinstate their driver’slicense,” said Ralph Miller, Director of Santa Clara County’s Departmentof Child Support Services. “This program will allow them to legally getback on the road without the concern of not being able to find a job ordrive a car because their license has been suspended.”

The “Get Back on the Road Again” Program is available on specificdates at each local child support agency throughout California duringAugust 2009. In addition to normal business hours, Santa Clara County’sChild Support Office will be open on Saturday, August 22 from 9 a.m. to1 p.m. to assist parents wishing to have their license restored.

“We want to assist the non custodial parent who may be having atough time financially but wants to support his or her children,” saidJohn Vartanian, Chief Attorney of the local child support agency. “Aftera case review, and for a limited time, Child Support Services Programstaff will release a driver license to non custodial parents who meet theprogram’s criteria.”

To benefit from this program, parents owing child support need tomeet the following conditions:

• Make a payment equal to one month of their child supportobligation,

• Make an additional payment of at least $50 toward arrears,• Provide his or her current employment status and if applicable

provide information regarding his or her current financial situation.Evaluations will be done on a case-by-case basis. Parents interested

Santa Rosa nació en Lima, Perú en 1586. Fue la “primerasanta canonizada” del continente americano. Auque fuebautizada con el nombre de Isabel, le llamaban car-

iñosamente Rosa y ése fue el nombre que le impuso en la confir-mación el arzobispo de Lima, Santo Toribio. Se cree que en suadolescencia padeció la pena de un amor mal correspondido. Añosmas tarde ingresó a la tercera orden de Santo Domingo, a partirde entonces se recluyó en una cabaña que había construido en elhuerto de su casa. Experimentó fenómenos paranormales y segúnrelata los historiadores versados en el tema, podía realizar cura-ciones milagrosas con tan solo tocar a los enfermos. En ese en-tonces una comisión de médicos y religiosos examinaron a lasanta, dictaminando que ella verdaderamente experimentaba ex-periencias sobrenaturales. El modo de vida y las prácticas ascéticas

de la santa siempre llamaron la atención de otros religiosos, enocasiones se le cuestionaba sobre el hecho de las curaciones queella realizaba, ella contestaba que era el poder de Dios quiénobraba al observar la fe de los fieles.

Santa Rosa vivió una vida plena espiritualmente. En plena ju-ventud partió de este mundo el día 24 de agosto de 1617, a los31 años de edad. Por todos sus méritos, misericordia con los de-samparados y bondad hacia los enfermos, fue canonizada por elPapa Clemente X en 1671. A Santa Rosa se le pide para conservarla buena salud, curarse de males extraños, enfermedades prolon-gadas y sobreponerse de padecimientos emocionales.

La festividad a Santa Rosa de Lima se celebra en el Perú el 30de agosto, además se le celebra en la iglesia universal el 23 deagosto.

available to play this Saturday, Aug. 22 against theKansas City Wizards. Per league and team policy, termsof the deal were not disclosed.

“We are excited to add a player of the caliber ofFabio da Silva to our roster,” said General Manager JohnDoyle. “He can play the ball out of the back and is a soliddefender. He will help strengthen our backline’s depthand add some good experience.”

Da Silva most recently played for Rio Branco in theBrazilian league and served as their captain, helping leadhis side to a fourth-placen finish in 2009, his second stintwith the club.
