A generation ago, you could start THAT company with almost no capital but today you need at least $100k

thanks to regulations. Yet ANYONE can start THIS kind of company with nothing more than desire and grow itinto a billion dollar enterprise. That opportunity is worth saving.

All of the great professionals live in a cage. They have to be bonded, licensed, certified, and cant do a thing

without government permission. But not us. Anyone can enter our industry who is willing and able to improvethemselves and unlike our caged friends, there is simply no limit to our growth.

Now Im not saying that the people creating regulations are evil or stupid. I would say they have the best of

intent and want a better life for everyone. But they too are people, not angels. They cannot fortell the futureimpact of their decisions nor can they serve legislative cocktails that are free of hangovers.

And so the result of well-intended government regulations is almost always unintended negative

consequences. Show me a highly regulated industry and Ill show you its high cost, low quality, and feebleprogress. It is nave and short-sighted to think this cant happen to us.

Why our industry has been left alone until now is anyones guess. In my view its probably because most

people are too scared to look under the hood, they like our products, and lets face it, how serious can you takea bunch of geeks that search through ebay for original star trek props?

But the past few years have changed all that. Technological horsepower combined with the social network

effect is powering revolutions around the world, waging cyberwarfare with real casualties, and holding thepower elite to an unprecedented degree of accountability.

This year, everything has changed and we can never go back. The water is warming. We can either get slowly

boiled to death like our caged friends, or we can take action now. Let me make it perfectly clear where I stand:give me liberty, or give me death.

It is that realization that inspired me to co-found the Hawaii Innovation Alliance. Now I have set a very modestgoal for us: we only want to be as respected as much as cats, dogs, whales and if we push really hard, maybeeven trees.

But testimony is only playing checkers. We need to play chess. Its not the lawmakers that pull the strings,rather its those who get lawmakers re-elected that pull the strings. Our mastery of new media gives usmassive leverage here.

Im a big believer in self-governance. So instead of reacting to regulation, were going to form a guild whichamong other things will create a code of ethics as well as best practices that members pledge to follow. And asany Dune fan knows, you dont mess with the guild.

Know this: there are many who feel we need to be controlled and today they have far more political power thanwe do. If you believe, like I do, that our industry is worth saving, we have to get serious and we need to do itnow before the water starts boiling.

There is a word of caution. When you start talking about lobbying, elections, and special interest groups, youstart looking like a lot of the other groups that are part of the 1% which many believe have caused greatdamage to our nation. How do we not become that which we despise?

We can be different. HIA is borne in the crucible of a decentralized wikipedia open source crowd source socialnetwork re-tweeting word pressing you tubing lamp stacking world. This ecosystem shuns centralized authority

in favor of pushing power out to the edge.

I believe the core value of HIA comes down to a single word and its what our industry has been built upon. Youcan choose Windows, Mac, or Linux. Choose iPhone or Android. Choose Chrome or Mozilla. Above all, we

must defend our right to freely choose.

What I love about choice is that it arises from the most quintessential American ideal: that Liberty is aninalienable right which comes from our creator, not our government. By building our organization atop this
