About the course

Background

Desertification is a global phenomenon generally characterized by land degradation which occurs in arid and semi-arid areas known as ‘drylands’. Desertification manifests itself in many different forms by which soil quality and agricultural production are devastated through flooding, erosion and wind damage, and it is estimated that as much as one-third of the land surfaces on Earth are threatened by it. At present, more than 250 million people are directly affected by desertification, and close to 1 billion are at risk if current trends continue (UNCCD). In Africa, a billion hectares - or 73% of its drylands - are affected by desertification, while another 1.4 billion hectares are affected in Asia. In all, more than 110 countries worldwide have drylands that are potentially at risk.

Israel may be considered an ancient land with new approaches toward combating desertification. Since its establishment, the State of Israel has embraced the issues of sustainable land management by initiating public policies designed to restore, develop and manage its drylands. Israel is recognized as a country that has successfully “held back the desert”. Yet, Israel faces the constant threat of land degradation mainly because of over-grazing, intensive cultivation and expansion of urban areas. Therefore, an integrative ecological research program supported mainly by the Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF), intends to understand natural processes together with human interactions and find the way for the long-term sustainability of the desert’s productivity and biodiversity.

Aims The course aims to share Israel’s experience, research, development policies and action plans while enhancing an exchange of experience, practical steps and measures to be taken to combat desertification taking into consideration the adaptability of methods and technologies to meet local conditions in each participant's country.

The Program The course will include professional lectures and visits on the following subjects: Soil conservation and rehabilitation • Watershed Management• Improvement of water use in Agriculture •Forestry and afforestation • Drought preparedness •Remote sensing• Metrology

The participants will also have the opportunity to participate in the 5th International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification which will take place at the Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Sde Boqer Campus, 17- 20 November 2014. For more information: www.desertification.bgu.ac.il

Requirements The course is geared towards professionals from countries affected by drought and desertification processes and have adopted a National Action Plan to combat desertification. Candidates should hold an academic degree in related disciplines, and at least two years of professional work experience in related fields. Priority will be given to professional staff involved in national / regional projects, with and/or under the aegis of governmental institutions, national and/or international organizations, research institutes, universities, NGOs, etc. A full command of English is required.
