La universidad de todos

Urgidos por elegir un atributo desde donde presentar a nuestra universidad, preferimos rescatar, entre todos, su condi-ción de universidad pública.Ella es parte de una política nacional que ha priorizado la educación pública como un recurso fundamental. Política que, excepto en algunos breves y oscuros períodos, se ha mantenido constante en la historia de nuestro país.Las universidades como la nuestra no sólo son un espacio de formación y capacitación profesional de las personas, sino también - y muy especialmente- un espacio formador de ciudadanía que democratiza la sociedad igualando posibilida-des.Quizás no haya en la historia nacional otra premisa que los argentinos y argentinas hayan defendido con más firmeza que la gratuidad de la enseñanza desde el nivel pre-escolar hasta el universitario. En este marco, la nuestra es una de esas universidades que aportan al orgullo nacional, una de las más jóvenes y pujantes entre todas: es la Universidad Nacional de Villa María.

Our UniversityImpelled to find an attribute to single out our university, we decided to choose, among them all, its condition of being a public university. It is part of a national policy that has prioritized public education as a fundamental resource . It is a policy that, except for some brief, dark periods, has remained unaltered In the history of our country.Universities such as ours are not only places that offer education and professional training but also—and very specially—a place where to build citizenship and to democratize society, levelling possibilities for everybody.There may not be in our national history any other principle that Argentine men and women have endorsed with more firmness than that of public university.In this context, ours is one of those universities that help build our national pride, one of the youngest and more thriving of them all: It is the National University of Villa Maria.


Dónde

La UNVM nació en la tercera ciudad de la provincia de Córdo-ba, en plena llanura pampeana y, por lo tanto, es parte de la región más productiva del país. Zona riquísima en recursos naturales es también escenario de una intensa vida comer-cial, industrial, financiera y asentamiento de las principales corrientes inmigratorias que dieron a Argentina su marcado carácter cosmopolita, multiétnico y multicultural.Ubicada a 140 km. de la ciudad de Córdoba, capital provin-cial y segunda ciudad de Argentina, Villa María es un polo educativo de relevancia nacional. Sobre esa tradición se funda esta universidad que desde 1995, crece y se desa-rrolla a ritmo sostenido.

Location UNVM was founded in the third city in importance in the Province of Córdoba, in the midst of the Pampas flatland and is situated, therefore, in the most productive region of the country. The area is very rich in natural resources and bears witness to an intense commercial, industrial, and financial activity as well as to the settlement of the most important immigrant waves that gave Argentina its marked cosmopolitan, multiethnic, multicultural character. Located at about 140 km. from Córdoba, capital city of the Province and second in importance in Argentina, Villa Maria is an educational center of national relevance. On this tradition the university was founded in 1995, and since then, has been growing at a steady pace.

La UNVM dispone de un campus de 96 hectáreas ubicado sobre el límite norte de la ciudad y edificios emplazados en la zona céntrica. En el extenso predio no dejan de construirse nuevas instalaciones en respuesta a las constantes exigencias propias del crecimiento institucional. Allí funcionan las aulas y laboratorios, los espacios deportivos, un estudio profesional de televisión y un teatrino don-de tienen lugar conciertos y sesiones musicales. A eso se suman las áreas de usos comunes, el comedor y la cantina, salas para docentes, la administración de los Institutos, el centro de salud, las residencias que albergan a estudiantes que llegan de otras ciudades y una importante biblioteca.Parte del predio se destina a la producción agrícola experimental de la carrera de Ingeniería Agronómica.

UNVM has a 96 ha campus to the north of the city, and offices in the downtown area also. New buildings continue rising in the large university grounds to cater for the constant demands of institutional growth.There are classrooms, labs, sports grounds, a professional TV studio and a small theatre for concerts and other musical performances. There are also areas for common uses, a dining hall, a cafeteria, teachers’ lounges, the administrative offices of the Institutes, the health center, dorms for out-of-town students, and a large library.Part of the university ground is used for experimental and agricultural production of Agronomical Engineering Programs

Desde su proyecto inicial de creación, la UNVM asume la necesidad de desarrollar no sólo carreras tradicionales sino también y, de manera muy especial, aquellas que resultan de las novedosas demandas sociales y desafíos de nuestra época.Más aun, tras detectar necesidades específicas dentro de su zona de influencia, la UNVM cuenta con sedes en ciuda-des próximas aportando allí a la producción económica y al desarrollo humano y social.Estructurada en torno a tres Institutos Académico Pedagógicos, la oferta de carreras de grado en la UNVM incluye:

Conocimiento, recursos y valores

Si bien el desarrollo de capacidades laborales es de importancia central en la estructuración de nuestros planes de es-tudio, la UNVM pone especial esmero en impartir una formación que articule esas competencias con valores morales y sociales. Se trata de no olvidar jamás que la formación de un profesional es inseparable de la formación del ser humano y del ciudadano.

Además del desarrollo de los contenidos curriculares en el aula, los docentes asumen actividades sistemáticas de inves-tigación y extensión, aportando conocimientos y tecnologías para el desarrollo económico regional, tanto como para el desarrollo humano y social. Pero la formación que la UNVM imparte no se limita a sus alumnos y graduados, de modo que, a través de distintas ins-tancias, la acción de la universidad se extiende hacia ámbitos oficiales, agentes de gobierno, organizaciones de la socie-dad civil y la comunidad en general. Son significativos, entre otros, los aportes de la Escuela de Gobierno destinada a la capacitación de funcionarios municipales y provinciales; los del Observatorio Integral de la Región con sus relevamientos estadísticos y la Ventanilla al Emprende-dor apoyando nuevos desarrollos empresarios.

Knowledge, Resources, and ValuesEven though the development of job skills is of key importance in our curricula, UNVM makes its most to impart an education which integrates those skills with moral and social values. It is important to remember that the education of a university graduate goes hand in hand with human development and citizenship.In addition to the development of the curriculum in the classroom, teachers carry out systematic research and extension activities, contributing with knowledge and technologies to the regional economic development as well as to human and social growth. However, the education UNVM offers is not restricted to students and graduates but it reaches out to government circles, government officials, civil society organizations, and to the whole community. Significant contributions are those made by the School of Governance, which objective is the training of city-hall and provincial state officials; the Comprehensive Regional Obser-vatory, which supplies statistics reports, and the Entrepreneur Program sponsoring new business developments.


Difusión y divulgación

El trabajo de la editorial universitaria constituye un aporte de inesti-mable valor para difundir la producción científica, artística y cultural de nuestros alumnos, docentes y egresados, como así también de referentes intelectuales de la ciudad y la región.

La estación de radio que trasmite en 106.9 mhz. constituye un espa-cio clave en la interacción de la universidad con el medio y es inmi-nente la creación de un canal universitario de televisión.Simultáneamente, un centro de producciones multimediales desa-rrolla contenidos educativo - culturales que se difunden por inter-net y medios de la región, como así también nacionales y de otros países.

Communications and Science DeliveryThe work done by the university publishing-house is a priceless contribution for the circulation of the scientific, artistic, and cultural production of our students, teachers, and alumnae as well as that of renown intellectuals of the city and the region.

The radio station on the 106.9 mhz. band is a key factor in the interaction of the university with the community, as will be the impending establishment of a univer-sity TV channel. Simultaneously, a center of multimedia productions develops educational and cultural contents which are broadcasted via the Internet, and the regional, national and foreign media.


Inclusión y equidad Las particulares facilidades de acceso a las universidades públicas argentinas no son en sí mismas una garantía de igualdad ya que, tal como ha podido verificarse, los estudiantes de origen familiar más humilde afrontan dificultades que tienden a gravitar desfavorablemente en su rendimiento académico.Trabajando por la igualdad de oportunidades, la UNVM dicta cursos de apoyo a los alumnos del último año del nivel medio y a los aspirantes a ingresar a ésta, o cualquier otra universidad del país.Tras el ingreso a la UNVM, los alumnos -como el resto de la comunidad académica- cuentan con el apoyo de innumerables planes, entre los que se destaca el sistema de becas de trabajo y de transporte entre otras; los servicios de un comedor universitario con menúes elaborados por nutricionistas y subsidiados para los alumnos; residencias estudiantiles gratuitas situadas en el Campus y un sistema de salud preventivo y asistencial con provisión gratuita de medicamentos entre otros beneficios. Además, la socialización de alumnos con sus pares se ve fortalecida por la promoción de actividades deportivas y recreati-vas como campeonatos, campamentos, montañismo, paseos, etc.

Inclusion and equityThe particularly easy access to Argentine public universities is not in itself guarantee of equality. As it has been proved, students from low-income families have to face difficulties that influence negatively on their academic achievement.Trying to provide equal opportunities to everybody, UNVM offers courses to high school seniors and to prospective applicants willing to register at our university or at any other institution of higher learning in the country. After having been admitted students, as well as the academic staff, may apply to any of the several scholarship programs available at UNVM—the Work Scholar-ship, and the Transport Scholarship, among others. They also have access to the service of a university cafeteria with nutritious menus available at subsidized prices for students; to residence halls on campus at no cost, and to preventive health care programs with free access to medicines, among other benefits.Moreover, students’ socialization with their peers is strengthened by the promotion of recreational activities such as sports competitions, camping, mountaineering, and jogging, among others.

Puertas afuera

Porque el conocimiento no es algo que transcurra aislado en la vida, la UNVM presta especial atención a sus vínculos con la comunidad. Así mantiene una estrecha relación con los medios de difusión participando de los debates ciuda-danos, al tiempo que organiza de manera permanente eventos científicos, artísticos y culturales de carácter público y gratuito. De manera muy especial además, se atiende el funcionamiento de talleres artísticos y realización de cursos específica-mente destinados a adultos mayores.Por vía de convenios con diferentes instancias del gobierno provincial y municipal, la universidad también presta servi-cios de auditoria, control ambiental, bromatológico y de seguridad, entre otros.

Outreach ActivitiesSince knowledge is acquired throughout life not in isolation but in a social context, UNVM pays particular attention to the ties that bind it with the community in which it is rooted. Thus, it keeps a close relationship with the media by taking part in civil debates, and with the whole community by continually organizing scientific, artistic, and cultural events free of charge.Moreover, and very especially, the university offers art workshops and relevant courses specifically designed for senior citizens.Through agreements with different provincial and city-hall agencies, the university also renders services in various areas: auditing, environmental control, food technology and security, among others.


El mundo Por su ubicación geográfica, para Argentina la distancia ha sido siempre un factor de relativo aislamiento. Y aunque el desarrollo tecnológico de las últimas décadas tiende a revertirlo, la integración con otras naciones es siempre una preocupación.La Universidad cuenta con un área de Relaciones Internacionales que promueve los intercambios de alumnos y docen-tes con otros países.Simultáneamente, la calidad académica y especificidad de algunas de nuestras carreras convoca a estudiantes que llegan desde otros países, especialmente latinoamericanos.

The worldDue to the geographic situation of Argentina, distance has always been a factor that has caused relative isolation. Even though the technological develop-ments of the latest decades have tended to reverse the situation, integration with other nations is always a concern. The International Relations Office of the University promotes exchanges of students and faculty with institutions of higher education around the world.At the same time, the academic standard and specificity of some of our courses of study appeal to foreign students, especially to young men and women coming from Latin America.
