Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

This coming week, we celebrate a special day as a parish. This Thursday, May 30th, is Ascension Thursday, our Titular Feast. On The Feast of the Ascension, also known as Ascension Thursday, we commemorate the bodily Ascension of Jesus into heaven. Ascension Day is traditionally celebrated on the fortieth day of the Easter Season. It was necessary for Jesus to ascend into heaven in order for him to send to us the gift of the Holy Spirit. There in heaven, he is seated at God the Father’s right hand in order to be our intercessor.

This Thursday we have a special evening planned. At 7:00p.m. we will have a Bilingual Mass. The Mass will be sung by some of our wonderful choirs and different musical groups. The different types of music is very representative of the diversity that makes up Ascension Parish. After the Mass there will be a dinner and celebration in the school gym. Similarly, the food for the dinner is representative of the many different cultures that worship here at Ascension on a regular basis. There will be entertainment as well. Please plan to be with us this Thursday evening!

Since The Feast of the Ascension is a holy day, in addition to our special evening celebration, two Vigil Masses for the Ascension will also be celebrated on Wednesday evening at 6:00p.m. in English and 7:00p.m. in Spanish. On Thursday, Mass will also be celebrated at 8:30a.m. with the children from the school, and again at 12:00 Noon.

In just about a month, (June 30th), a group parishioners will be journeying to the Dominican Republic once again for our annual parish mission. The mission will take place from June 30th, to July 7th. This will be our second year in Guaymate. Guaymate is located in the southeast part of the country. We will be approximately 45 in number. Those who are going on the Mission are making great personal sacrifices, sacrifices of time, and financial sacrifices in order to help some of the most needy.

We are so grateful to the many people who have made donations to our mission. Everything was shipped down last weekend to ensure that all the donations will be there by the time we arrive. Our last, and sometimes the most challenging part of our mission is the fundraising. We use this last month for our final fundraising efforts. If anyone is still able to make a financial donation to our mission, we will be most grateful. Each year, after the mission, we do publish in the bulletin a financial report of our mission so that you know exactly how your donations are being used. Thank you again for your tremendous support and generosity.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Esta semana próxima, celebramos un día especial como pa-rroquia. Este jueves, 30 de mayo, es jueves de la Ascensión, nuestra fiesta titular. En la Fiesta de la Ascensión, conme-moramos la ascensión corporal de Jesús a los cielos. El día de la Ascensión es tradicionalmente celebrado el cuarenta día del tiempo de la Pascua. Era necesario que Jesús ascen-diera a los cielos para que nos enviara al Espíritu Santo. En el cielo, él está sentado a la derecha del Padre para ser nues-tro intercesor.

Este jueves, tenemos una noche especial planeada. A las 7 de la noche, habrá una misa bilingüe. La misa será cantada por algunos de nuestros maravillosos coros y diferentes grupos musicales. Los diferentes tipos de música son muy represen-tativos de la diversidad que conforma a la parroquia de la Ascensión. Después de la misa habrá una cena y celebración en el gimnasio de la escuela. De igual manera, la comida para la cena es representativa de las diferentes culturas que rinden culto regularmente aquí en la Ascensión. ¡Habrá en-tretenimiento también! Por favor, ¡planifique estar con no-sotros este jueves por la noche!

Como la fiesta de la Ascensión es un día de precepto, además de nuestra celebración especial por la noche, habrá dos mi-sas vigilias para la Ascensión el miércoles por la noche a las 6 en inglés y a las 7 en español. El jueves, una misa será cele-brada a las 8:30 de la mañana con los estudiantes de la es-cuela, y habrá otra misa al mediodía.

Dentro de un mes, (30 de junio) un grupo de feligreses viaja-rán a la República Dominicana para su anual misión parro-quial. La misión tomará lugar del 30 de junio hasta el 7 de julio. Éste será nuestro segundo año en Guaymate. Guay-mate está ubicado en la parte sureste del país. Seremos aproximadamente 45 personas. Los que vamos en misión hacemos grandes sacrificios personales, sacrificios de tiempo y sacrificios económicos para ayudar a los más necesitados.

Estamos muy agradecidos a todos los que han hecho dona-ciones a nuestra misión. Todo fue enviado el fin de semana pasado para asegurar que todas las donaciones estuvieran listas para que cuando lleguemos. La última, y a veces, la etapa más desafiante de nuestra misión, es la recaudación de fondos. Utilizamos este último mes para nuestros esfuerzos de recaudación de fondos. Si hay alguien que todavía hacer una donación económica a nuestra misión, estaremos muy agradecidos. Cada año, después de la misión, publicamos un informe económico en el boletín para que sepa cómo se utili-zaron las donaciones. Muchas gracias por su tremendo apo-yo y generosidad.

ASCENSION THURSDAY

Is our parish feast, and it is a holy day of obligation. Vigil Masses are Wednesday, May 29, at 6:00 PM (English) and 7:00 PM (Spanish). On Thursday, May 30, Masses are at 8:30 AM (with the school children), 12Noon (English) and 7:00 PM (bi-lingual). The various musical groups of the parish will provide the music for the 7:00 PM, and a festive celebration will be held in the school auditorium after the Mass. All are invited to attend.

ASCIENSION JUEVES Es nuestra fiesta parroquial, y es un día santo de obligación. Las misas de vigilia son los Miércoles 29 de Mayo a las 6:00 PM (inglés) y a las 7:00 PM (español). El Jueves 30 de Mayo, las Misas son a las 8:30 AM (con los niños de la escuela), 12Noon (inglés) y 7:00 PM (bilingüe). FEAST OF THE VISITATION

On Friday, May 31, the Church celebrates the feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth who is expecting a child, John the Baptist. St. Luke's Gospel records this beautiful story in chapter 1, verses 39 - 56. Read this, and you will discover the origin of part of the prayer HAIL MARY, one of Catholicism's most treasured prayers.

FIESTA DE LA VISITA El viernes 31 de Mayo, la Iglesia celebra la fiesta de la Visita de la Santísima Virgen María a su prima Isabel, que está esperando un hijo, Juan el Bautista. CHURCH IN EASTERN EUROPE

TODAY: It is taken up for the support of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. After the devastation of Communism for over fifty years, it is necessary to rebuild the church in these countries. This includes rebuilding of church buildings, catechetical programs, schools and sem-inaries and support for religious orders of women and men.

HOY: Se toma para el apoyo de la Iglesia en Europa Cen-tral y Oriental. Después de la devastación del comunismo por más de cincuenta años, es necesario reconstruir la iglesia en estos países. During the month of May, the Rosary will be prayed each weekday at 6:30 PM, before the Spanish Mass at 7:00 PM. On Saturdays, it will be prayed at 11:15 AM.

CAREGIVERCARE Presents

SMART SATURDAYS At. THOMAS MORE CHUCH

A full day of social activities and programs dedicated to people over 60 will be provided by CAREGIVERCARE, for four consecutive Saturdays. Activities will be held in the Rectory’s rooms at St. Thomas More Church, 65 E. 89TH ST. NEW YORK, NY, 10128. Light refreshment will always be available, as well as another room to rest. Between pro-grams you will have 30 minutes to socialize or rest. The activities are free of charge. Anyone can come at any time, and leave and come back at will. All programs are based on neuroprotective activities and designed both for persons with cognitive impairment and for those without. Each pro-gram will unfold ove the entire four Saturday.

For Cooking demonstration, Italian class and Spanish class the seats are limited and registration is required by Thurs-day of the preceding week by emailing in-fo@caregivercare.org and specifying as subject the date (e.g. “May 25, 2019”).
